[VFB] I'm finally back

2014-06-03 Thread Joseph Fusco, Sr.
Just returned home from 9 weeks of rehab from a broken hip. The head of my
left femur - which was anchoring my artificial hip - snapped and I had to
have some major repairs.

I am well on my way to wellness.

Re: [VFB] Wounded Warrior Project (OFF TOPIC)

2014-01-25 Thread Joseph Fusco, Sr.

*I agree that our returning vets need all the support we can give them.
From a fly fishing/fly tying perspective, here in KC, MO, we have a very
active HEALING WATERS program. Our club - MO TROUT FISHERMEN ASSOC. -
works with our local VA hospital and are sponsors of the program. Another
approach to helping our warriors return to a normal? life.*

Folks: I just saw another TV ad for the Wounded Warrior Project, and
was really moved by it. I know this don’t have anything to do with fly
fishing, but it does have something to do with US, which is to help each

order to donate. I am proud to say that there are those in these groups who
are and have been helping wounded warriors for a long time now.

Anyway, starting at only $19 a month will help wounded men and women make
a smoother, less financially burdened transition back to the civilian world
without having to worry about as many things as they would otherwise. You
may not be able to help any of these ppl personally, but you can help them
ALL in some small way by just giving to this great program.

As a disabled Vet myself, I know what it’s like to have to drive up to 120
miles round trip (which I did for almost 20 yrs when I lived in FL) every
cpl moths or even more often at times just to see a VA doc. Sure, they paid
us a “mileage” and a “meal”, reimbursement, but believe me, it did NOT
cover the actual cost of the gasoline alone, much less food, wear and tear
on your car, time taken off work etc.

Thanks a LOT in advance on behalf of the Wounded Warriors you will be
helping. I know it means a LOT to them. I know there are some great hearted
 ppl in this group. Chuck

I have been tying very small chironomids in preparation for a lake fishing
trip in early May. I am trying to tie much smaller chironomids than I have
in the past, but it has been quite a challenge to get a 2 mm tungsten bead
onto a size 16 hook. I seem to spend more time searching for dropped beads
on the floor than actual tying. I have tried using tweezers to hold the
bead while I fumble with the hook to put the point in the correct side of
the bead, but all too often, the tweezers slip and the bead goes flying
across the room. The eyesight is not as good as it used to be, but the
real problem is holding the bead. any suggestions?

[VFB] MATERIAL DATA BASE

2010-02-03 Thread Joseph Fusco, Sr.
*I seem to remember that we had a thread on the list a couple of years ago
where we were discussing pattern data bases. One of the available freeware
programs that we discussed was a data base that would suggest patterns you
could tie with materials that you listed. I have a student in my current
tying class who would be interested in such a program. Does anyone out
there have a link to a program such as this?*

The JFTD is coming up on its 12th birthdayand continues as a daily

I suspect that there are a few newer VFB members who aren't aware

I thought it was a great DVD, in spite of the viewJ You have my other
 comments.

I tried the alpaca two ways; tying in the tips tying in the middle of the
bunch. Tying in the middle was more difficult, but made for a thicker dub.
Not necessarily a valid adaptation of the technique.

Haven’t used other materials yet, ‘cause I’ve been busy need to redo the
flies for the swap. Looking forward to using other materials.

I like the results much better than doing it the way I was, getting more
 consistent results better segmenting.

Well, just about everyone who ordered DVDs should have them by now (two in
route), and most have had at least a week to view and try out the
techniques- either for the 1st time, improvement , or extension of the
 technique.

Would like to get some comments:

- Your thoughts on the DVD and ease of transition into tying-
- Your first tries at rope-dubbing-
- Your re-tries (re-ties) at rope-dubbing and the extensions-
- Your overall opinion of the results you're getting: ease of
adaptation, speed, dubbing results, fun, etc.

If you're having a problem, go ahead and bring it out. Don't be shy. I
spent an entire afternoon at a fly-show with a 25 year veteran professional
tier/guide coaching him on getting a perfect rope-dubbed dry fly body. His
problem- doing it so long one way made him want to do it the same way.

 Hi Gang,

if you have some time, pls do me a favor:

Check out the site : http://www.alrhome.de/ff/swap.xml
It should show some 10 neat flies with names and tyers. There are some
links on it, but they do not work.

As you see at the extension, it is not html, but xml data. therefore the
display of the page depends upon if your browser can handle the xml and
the xslt stylesheet (for the IT guys among us).

I'm in detail interested, whether older browser or macs can show the page.

If it works, it is much easer to create the pages for swaps than do it
 conventionally with HTML.

 answers pls to rene.zillm...@t-online.de

 Thanks
 Rene

I remembered another bird, it was a swallow on a dry fly.

Ok, I caught the following, but not on a fly, they were on light spinning
  gear;
Freshwater clam. Caught on a spoon fishing for stripers on Lake Pepin,
 the
Wisconsin side. I have a picture somewhere...
  Seagull, on a tandem spinner.
Snapping turtle on a red devil.
A friend of mine caught his own ear w/ a worm on a hook. It was hilarious
taking him to the hospital on the bus, hook, worm bobber dangling from
 his
ear when we were in h.s. I told him he had to leave the bobber attached
 to
  avoid damaging his ear:)

the leader its called a catch and you can break him off.

2: Seagull that took an EP streamer on the backcast turnover while
fishing for red snapper in the Gulf. Hooked him in the foot. He just
sat down on the water and glared at us until we pulled him to the boat,
wrapped him in a towel and released him.

3: A dragonfly took a small nymph at the end of a puddle cast while

People who complain there's no neat threads about fly-fishing, here's

doesn't have to be an intensional catch, even accidental counts.

I can think of at least a half-dozen weird things I've caught on flies.

   1. A bat. About 20 yrs ago, fishing at dusk, I hung a fly up in a
tree branch, with the fly dangling over the river. I was going to try
to flick the fly off the branch when a bat swooped down and hit the
fly. He foul-hooked in his shoulder- mayby at the last second sensing

I use a bead box system from WalMart to sort my hooks. It is a collection
of small boxes that fit into a larger box. I bought three of the sets (@
$8.00 to $9.00 each) and now have more than enough room to sort and control
all my hooks. The real advantage is that each size and style of hook is
kept in a separate box, and - when you travel - you can re-pack the larger
box with the sizes and styles you will need while on the road. I will try
to get a picture of one of my boxes and post it for you.

started my trout fishing in the northeast, but I was further north than

across the Vermont / New York line. My favorite hole was down stream from
the bridge at Shushen, New York. That was where I caught my first trout on
a fly - a 10 brown on an Adams dry ... How classic can you get? My first
trout on a fly was with a dry, but I soon went along with the trend and
became a wet fly fisherman and to this day I seldom fish a dry fly -
althoough I still carry a box of them with me every time I hit the stream.

 Tony
At least you had a stove to heat food.
We haven't had a bad winter over here in the UK since the 70's, but as the
winter starts I always put aside a weeks worth of dried foods (don't go bad
in a power cut) Rice, Porridge oats, Pasta, Polenta flour, Dried milk, Dried
fruit and some cans of beans, soup etc. To make it a little more palatable
jars of honey, maple syrup and jam. Bottled water is always a good idea as
is a gas stove to cook. I like my comfort and have no wish to suffer a
survival situation when i can with a little forward planning merely have a
 few days inconvenience.
Our cars and work van always have 24 hours food and water, blanket and a
waterproof poncho. In UK you are seldom able to get an hours walk from a
village or town but like I said I like comfort.
 iain

As most of you know we had a bad ice storm here in Arkansas.
We were lucky to only be out of power for just four days. By that I mean we
were not to get power for another week or so but a bit of luck came out way.
There was not a room to be found in our whole area for the out of state
crews that came in to work. The resort down the road offered to put up as
many as they could if they had power. They got power to them and we are on
the same line so we got power too after four days. We are total electric so
we had no heat, water,or lights. The garage door was frozen shut so we could
not get the van out. We live on a one lane road that is not plowed so even
if we could get the van out we would not be able to get to town. All power
in town was out too. Those that have been here know about the hill. The one
mile steep hill was totally iced over and blocked by fallen trees and big
limbs. It took a crew of locals and farm hands 12 hours to get it open but
there was still the ice problem as far as getting to town. Temps went down
to 18*F two nights, we had 10 candles and an oil lamp burning in the living
room for heat.Spent the four days in winter outside clothes, even slept in
them.No comment on the toilet. Luckily we had a one burner Colman camping
stove and bottled water to make hot chocolate and warm cans of soup. We
managed but I hope we will not have to do that again. We finally got out
yesterday and could not believe the damage done
It looks like a war zone and like about 20 tornadoes went through. Roads
blocked with trees down, loads of branches down every where. Broken power
poles and wires down. No stop lights working. Walmart was working on half
power but most of the shelves for candles, oil lamps, bread, milk camping
stoves, blankets and a lot of other stuff was clean. It may be two weeks or
more before all power is restored
We lost all the food in the freezer and refrigerator
 Arkansas Tony

Chili Pepper, Eagle Scout, Blues I II, Jody's Courage, Renegade,
 Steelhead, Redneck, Murf Memorial.

To make this one really different, I'm thinking of an OLD FART SWAP!
You'll need to be at least 65 years old before the end of this year, ore
thereabout. The fly you'd tie would be one of your own design, preferably
one of your favorites, fly size up to you. At this point, I'm just testing
the water. As those of you who have participated in my seaps before already
know, there'll be around 25 participants. Could be more. Could be less,
depending on the number of OLD FARTS who can still do a whip finish. :-) ;-)
 :-P :-D

*Time frame for flies to me would be around the first of February, with
the usual toe tags, return postage packaging or pre-stamped return
 package.*

I look forward to hearing from you OF's who can still tie a fly.
