Don,
Out here in the mid-Atlantic states this fly is very much a match the hatch
kind of thing. It is the earliest terrestrial to come out each year. I have
my best luck using this fly unweighted and greased with floatant on a fine

Wapsi also makes this. It comes in a package that resembles a match book.

Just make sure that embroidery thread isn't cotton. You will probably have

Oh no. Dail was such a wonderful guy. Please pass my condolences to his
family. Was he at this last Sowbug? I thought he was.

They are destructive to trout reds I will tell you that. Carp can live in
just about any kind of water, including the clean cold water needed by
trout and I have watched in horror as enormous carp clean out reds from
recently spawned trout. I just don't like non-native species. Carp are
invasive
Personally I would try rare earth magnets. They will probably only latch on
to the guides since they are steel underneath (unless it has those Recoil
guides), but their gripping power is amazing. If you have any old hard
drives laying around inside lies one of the most powerful magnets you could

Tony,
That is an organization technique I picked up on in Mary Dette's fly shop.
I noticed she had the shelves lined with shoe box sized tupper ware and
each box was labeled with a pattern and presumably held all the contents
needed to tie that fly.

Suitcase? I envy your minimalist approach. I am still working out of my
seabag from my time in the Marines.

More likely a 2 than a 2/0.guide sizes are the opposite of hook sizes. 2/0
is very small. A size 2 is also kind of small, but that may have been what
they used. I would venture a guess at a number 4 after the stripper guide.

Chuck,
Once they molt, they return to the water they came from. I have heard some
scientists say that they return within hundreds of feet of the water they
came from with great accuracy. What you saw alive in your lampshade was a

Since all of this talk about Hex's got me thinking how few patterns of
these you see. I used to go up to a bamboo rod makers gathering in
Grayling, Michigan that had a famous hex hatch about the end of June. I
won't make it up there this year, but I miss seeing those enormous mayflies

The Recoil guides, as novel and revolutionary as they were, just couldn't
handle that kind of stress in colder temperatures. Repeated exposure and
stress under cold temps made the guides brittle. Like Tony, I exclusively
use snake brand guides.

This is very sad news. I met Mark at the same time I first met Tony in
person up at the Catskills Bamboo Rodmakers gathering in Roscoe, NY. Mark
was a very warm and open person and he and Misa invited Tony and I over to
their house before we left town. We got a tour of their very impressive
tying
My advice is don't try to thin it, get a fresh batch. I know people try to
save things and not let things go to waste, but in this case you are
running up against something that has run its chemical course. I use
varnish mostly for bamboo rod making, but once it starts to set I get a
fresh batch.
