[videoblogging] Live broadcasts of my computer usage: time and place
Hi, I will be broadcasting my computer usage live almost daily, twice a day @ 10am and 10pm EST. Each broadcast will likely last 1-2 hours and would involve mostly web surfing/googling, at least initially. Later, I may start doing real work or playing games during broadcasts. The broadcasts will be on this VNC channel: http://vnccasts.com/?cmd=channel_infochannel=10 The associated chat room is vnccasts_demo at conference.jabber.org. What you say in the chat room could influence what I do in the broadcast. I will not be reading my email during these broadcasts. So if you would like to contact me during a broadcast, please use the chat room. As for possible applications of broadcasting your computer usage live, please see the sample feeds at http://vnccasts.com and this earlier discussion: http://groups.google.com/group/videoblogging/browse_thread/thread/8708340409ccc586/52b1d9de5049f0c0#52b1d9de5049f0c0 Also, see this blog post: http://libraryclips.blogsome.com/2006/03/31/vnccasts-live-screencasting/ Amir P.S. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Best Overal Digital Video Format
Hello,Actually, thinking about it, promoting VideoLAN would be a good way promoting Ogg Theora. SoEveryone should promote VideoLAN and link to: http://getVideoLAN.com/ (Kind of like to getfirefox.com and getfireant.com links.)Just need some nice buttons and banner ads to link to it.See ya On 4/5/06, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello Harold,Short answer... VideoLAN will continue to support it.Long answer... I don't see why they would remove support for Windows Media formats on the Mac. They have no reason to remove it. It's probably more work to remove it. And keeping it there is in line with their goals. (Which seems to be that VideoLAN is the ultimate video player that plays everything.) See yaOn 4/5/06, Harold Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes, that was it; thanks. (There actually already seems to be quite a large install base for this already. So there's probably more people who can watch Ogg Theora movies than you expect.) See ya On 4/4/06, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello Harold,Just another point (that I forgot to mention before). If you want to support Ogg Theora video, but are worried that browsers won't support it, you could always use the Free and open source applet that plays it. You can get more info here: Cortadohttp://www.flumotion.net/cortado/ (It's akin to the Flash video player people are using. But works with Ogg Theora.) There's a whole set of formats that are currently being used: MPEG WMV QuickTime (.mov) M4V (iPod) MP4 (MPEG4) FLV (Flash Video) RM (Real Media) Xivd Ogg Theora Most vlogs I go to regularly support around 4 of these formats. Everyone seems to be trying to support as much as possible to get the widest possible audience. Honestly, I think it's early enough in the game where we can influence and perhaps even determine which format will become the defacto standard. As soon as you get enough browsers/players reading it, and get enough free (and maybe non-free) vlog hosting providers producing it, it will become the defacto standard. See ya On 4/4/06, Harold Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Charles, This is the first I've heard of Ogg Theora, and I am *into* open source; that is, I run Linux on a PC and on an old Powerbook at home, though I can't say I use it every day (or even every week or month, for that matter).I have my doubts that Ogg Theora will become the de facto standard; I mean, look at Ogg Vorbis. How many of you (reading this) even know what Ogg Vorbis is? You're perhaps right, however, about one format or another becoming the de facto standard in the future.Look at what happened with Flash; now you'll find it installed in nearly every browser out there. And though I admire your idealism about Ogg and its future, which format do you think is the *current* de facto standard? Thanks for your feedback, Harold On 4/4/06, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I think the only way to really make all (or most) browsers support one standard video format is to force them. Basically, we do this by making a single video format the defacto standard. In other words, all of us vloggers just start using one video format, and eventually, the browser makers will feel compelled to support that format. Now, this doesn't mean that we don't support other formats. It just means that as a baseline we always support that one video format. (My vote is for Ogg Theora to be the defacto standard for the reasons Ipreviously mentioned.) If you want an example of this

Hello,From what I understand of it, yes, this is something we have to be concerned over if you are using in-page players. (If you don't use in-page players, then no, this is NOT something you have to be concerned over.) Basically, the object and embed tags aren't going to works as they used to work.I think what is going to happen now, in IE's case, is that if you have them, a window will pop up and ask you if you want to run/play them. If you just link to movie files (with the a or link elements) then you should be fine.See yaOn 4/6/06, Stan Hirson, Sarah Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Should we be concerned about Microsoft's making changes to IE to conform to the Eolas decision? Hi Steph, Well, ideally folks will get there posts in by Friday. But I probably will not post the winner and a new challenge until Monday, so if absolutely necessary folks can wait until Sunday to post. And remember, you can make that with vlogchallenge in general, you can make a vlog specifically for the challenge, or you can simply post one from your archive that relates. Also, I wanted to let you guys know that I spent two hours yesterday submitting the site to numerous vlog directories and such. I will do my best to promote the heck out of the site so that over time you guys will get folks really looking at your entries. It's almost circular because I need viewers to get entries, but I need entries to get viewers :) CheersMonique_Monique Danielle, PresidentReferrals comprise the majority of our business. There are a few Open Source and Linux NLE's but I don't have my reference with me right now since I'm at work. [videoblogging] Re: Traffic on Your Vlog?
1. How long has your vlog been up? About two years, if you just count video, though Andy Carvin's Waste of Bandwidth has been going strong since October 1994. I posted my first video in Sept 2003, but I didn't start doing it regularly until May 2004. 2. How many vlog entries do you have posted? At least 114, plus a handful of videos I've done for a few other sites. 3. How much traffic do you get? typically around 650 visitors/1000 page views a day. Sometimes jumps into the tens of thousands when I get farked, dugg or slashdotted. (Had a jump this week when the band Gomez linked to me on their blog.) 4. What's the URL of your vlog? http://www.andycarvin.com - with the full video archive at http://www.andycarvin.com/archives/video/ 5. How many feeds and directories did you submit you site to? Not sure; whatever the total is for pingomatic. 6. How else do you promote your vlog? I occasionally post messages about specific posts to around half a dozen email lists, plus sites like omidyar.net, digitaldivide.net, etc. 7. Bookmark rate? No idea. How do you calculate this? 8. Search Engine Saturation: Marketleap says 14,380, but I have no idea what that means. 9. Link Popularity: 25,470 links according to marketleap.com. Currently ranked #979 out of 700,000 blogs indexed by blogpulse.com, but my ranking has ranged from the top 300 to the top 2500 depending on how often I'm posting. Technorati Rank: 3,818 (742 links from 319 sites) 10. Google Page Rank: 7 (is that good?) 10. Why do you vlog? Because everyone should tell stories, and too many stories around the world get overlooked. andy carvin www.andycarvin.com Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: HDD for Video Blogging?
I've been looking at those hard driver camcorders, too, but I worry about their fragility. Would the hard drives be able to withstand the abuse that I tend to put my camera through? Maybe, maybe not...It's one thing to have a hard drive in an iPod (and of course, a laptop), but a camcorder? Not unless I can swap out that hard drive if I ever need to... Harold On 4/5/06, Le Grand Magistery, LLC [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Bill, Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated. However, HDD stands for Hard Disc Drive, not High Definition (actually, it is pretty confusing. They really should have made more of a differentiation between those two). With an HDD camcorder it's my understanding that you you don't need any tapes or discs or any other media to record onto. The camcorder houses a hard drive and you just record whenever and wherever and then plug the camera direct into the computer to upload your footage. I think HDD camcorders are available in both HD and SD (though maybe only SD right now?). --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com , Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I tend to be of the opinion that HD is just a little bit of overkill for a video blog. Mostly because it's very very unlikely that you would ever post full resolution HD footage on the internet--at least anytime soon. Given the additional resources needed for a HD workflow with the end result being just 320x240 highly compressed seems like a waste to me. HD is more than just an investment in a camera. Your editing system, hardware and software needs to be up to snuff to handle it as you'll use more hard drive space and processing power in handling HD. But that's just my opinion. The cameras seem a little more expensive, but we wouldn't need to invest in any tapes, discs, or any other media, so it seems pretty appealing and ideal for doing a vlog. What do you think? Any and all help/opinions would be greatly appreciated as I'd love to get this thing going asap. Many thanks in advance! P.S. Re: [videoblogging] Must See Vlogs
Yeah, I really find it interesting that the videoblogs that I find myself always watching all the way through, and being excited when there is a new video belong to people who i have a personal connection to. My good friend who moved away, other peolpe from Grand Rapids, vloggers who I have met in person, and some people who started the same time as me (we are like vlog brothers). these are the people whose videos I get most excited about Though that isnt to say that I think they make the most ocmpelling videos for a mass audience, but I don't think that's a requirement for vloggers. On 4/6/06, Michael Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My must see videoblogs are the ones done by my friends.-VerdiOn 4/6/06, Stephanie Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:What are your very favorite I can't miss it videoblogs? --Stephanie--Stephanie Bryant[EMAIL PROTECTED]Blogs, vlogs, and audioblogs at: http://www.mortaine.com/blogs Yahoo! Number one being that you can switch from one OS to the other without having to reboot. There shouldn't be the performance issues that there used to be with Virtual PC solution that they had on the PowerPC based Macs, since there wouldn't be any processor emulation involved. I expect there to be a WINE-like solution soon. Where Windows software can just run natively in the Mac OS without having to bother to boot up Windows at all. Re: [videoblogging] New macs will run XP
No the other way around. The Virtualization is supeior. But not less dangerous like I thought this morning. Both native boot and Virtualization are protected from viral attacks by virtue of their temporary condition. Any attack is easily thwarted by killing the attacked volume and replacing it with a new boot volume either way. And no Windows viral attack can get at OS X at all. Virtualization is superior because it runs as a window inside OS X so that no booting back and forth is necessary to use one OS or the other - they co-reside in OS X. -- Taylor Barcroft New Media Publisher, Editor, Video Journalist, Podcaster, Futurecaster Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) On Apr 6, 2006, at 11:55 AM, David Meade wrote: I saw your first post, Kunga, but I didn't catch why running windows in a virtual machine is INFERIOR and much more dangerous than booting it natively .. care to explain? Re: [videoblogging] Traffic on Your Vlog?
1. How long has your vlog been up? Entire site since 2001, my first video posting is dated July 19, 2004 - http://www.beginningwithi.com/vlog/040719.htm 2. How many vlog entries do you have posted? Over 100 videos, I also post a lot of text and photos. 3. How much traffic do you get? Somewhere around 1,000 unique visitors per day. Few come for the video alone. 4. What's the URL of your vlog? http://www.beginningwithi.com/ 5. How many feeds and directories did you submit you site to? Many, in batches, dont' remember exactly. 6. How else do you promote your vlog? Email newsletter, signature, postings in travel forums and occasional blog comments. 7. Bookmark rate? ?? I have awstats, but don't see where to find or calculate this. 8. Search Engine Saturation: 1860 9. Link Popularity: 1646 10. Google Page Rank: 4 10. Why do you vlog? Mostly for fun and a means of self-expression. -- best regards, Deirdré Straughan www.beginningwithi.com (personal) www.tvblob.com (work) Yahoo! I admit that being able to toggle back and forth is nice ... but ... if the VM app works like ones I have used in the windows world ... with this application your windows system would exist as a bunch of files within the MAC OS file system ... if yout MAC OS ever got hosed you'd lose the Windows system too wouldnt you? Not so if you'd duel booted ... they'd be seperate file systems / partitions / whatever. Also ... I've seen performance hits on windows VMs running on PC hardware (no chip emmulation there either). I guess i'm thinking of this from a perspective of wanting to run very resource intensive apps. I like VMs ... they definately win out in alot of scenarios for ease of use. See here's the reason why this is a big deal to me ... ... the entire university of missouri system - all four campuses, have standardized on outlook, so, for example people all over can see my calendar and schedule stuff and see when I'm busy, so like, I get an email asking if I want to accept/decline a calendar thing and, if I accept it automatically goes on my calendar, and there's an address book that is automatic and I can find anyones address info in the system or email, just by typing a few letters, and there are other functions as well ... I have been trying to use entourage, and it doesn't do half that stuff and crashes all the time - if I could run outlook it would be much better ... for distance learning we use a program called centra and webEx - only work on windows ... I use my OTHER computer ... ... just now, I was planning on using recording from my digital recorder I got a while ago, in an new video for vlog week ... to compensate for the lack of mic jack on the handycam, and, lo and behold, it only works with windows (at the time I got it, that's what I used) ... ... so, all of these programs, I could run, without having two computers sitting on my desk, and without having to have two lap tops and still have apple advantages... so, for me, in particular, sitting in this tech university, and wanting to use a mac, it's a big deal ... why did I write all that? who am I arguing with? who doesn't already understand these advantages? ... I will add to this...although I've not used them recently (in the last year or so) in the past, I would use vmware to do development and testing on different os's. I would find flaky little bugs that never showed in a full os. As support and product developer for my employer, we see the odd incident come to us where we can't reproduce an issue, and if the user tires it on a non-vm...no repro either.Just my two cents. VM's have a huge advantage, but not a magic bullet quite yet. Nope. This Virtualization is seated in Intel's new Virtualization Hardware in the Duo Core Processors. Windows resides in a secure volume that does not co-mingle with OS X. Usually highlighting work from videoblogs as well as other video makers who may not have a daily feed of content on their site. We also include all kinds of video oddities and rare finds from the depths of the web. We also make new things, just for The PAN audience! And there is MUCH more to come! Re: [videoblogging] Re: New Macs will run XP
Speaking of Video Blogs. How bout this one of Half-Life running natively in XP on a 2GHz Intel iMac? Pretty amazing stuff. http://www.cabel.name/2006/04/boot-camp-first-look-half-life-2- video.html BTW Only the missing 3-D Support keeps Parallels Workstation 2.1 from being a gaming environ. I IMed with Parallels this afternoon and they said that 3-D support will be in their 3.0 version this summer. Said it's simply a matter of getting driver info from the card manufacturers that are in the Macs. So the Dual Boot may not be much of a needed factor by Fall for even the most demanding 3-D XP applications/games. -- Taylor Yahoo!
