[videoblogging] Live broadcasts of my computer usage: time and place

2006-04-06 Thread Amir Michail
Hi,

I will be broadcasting my computer usage live almost daily, twice a
day @ 10am and 10pm EST. Each broadcast will likely last 1-2 hours
and would involve mostly web surfing/googling, at least initially.
Later, I may start doing real work or playing games during broadcasts.

The broadcasts will be on this VNC channel:

http://vnccasts.com/?cmd=channel_infochannel=10

The associated chat room is vnccasts_demo at conference.jabber.org.
What you say in the chat room could influence what I do in the broadcast.

I will not be reading my email during these broadcasts. So if you
would like to contact me during a broadcast, please use the chat room.

As for possible applications of broadcasting your computer usage live,
please see the sample feeds at http://vnccasts.com and this
earlier discussion:

http://groups.google.com/group/videoblogging/browse_thread/thread/8708340409ccc586/52b1d9de5049f0c0#52b1d9de5049f0c0

Also, see this blog post:

Amir

P.S. If you would like to watch me at other times, please let me know.

Hello,Actually, thinking about it, promoting VideoLAN would be a good way promoting Ogg Theora. SoEveryone should promote VideoLAN and link to: http://getVideoLAN.com/

Basically, we do this by making a single video format the defacto standard. In other words, all of us vloggers just start using one video format, and
eventually, the browser makers will feel compelled to support that format. Now, this doesn't mean that we don't support other formats. It just means
that as a baseline we always support that one video format. (My vote is for Ogg Theora to be the defacto standard for the reasons Ipreviously mentioned.)

Depends on how you embed your content. vPIP is one good solution in many

Hello,From what I understand of it, yes, this is something we have to be concerned over if you are using in-page players. (If you don't use in-page players, then no, this is NOT something you have to be concerned over.)
Basically, the object and embed tags aren't going to works as they used to work.I think what is going to happen now, in IE's case, is that if you have them, a window will pop up and ask you if you want to run/play them.
If you just link to movie files (with the a or link elements) then you should be fine.See yaOn 4/6/06, Stan Hirson, Sarah Jones

Yes, it needs to be in an external javascript file (vPIP implements

Is anyone here using Linux?

What tools are you using to watch vlogs? I've got PenguinTV going for

I would love to know what people running Linux use for their editing.
I've played with a few Linux NLE's and had problems with all of them.
More than likely the problem was user error though.

Yeah...we're doing something very similar. We just can't, in good faith,
fill an art/culture documentary vlog with daily posts of whatever, so
we're going to just skip on to what was our next planned episode- coverate
of the first South Florida Gay Rodeo.

Rodeo's plenty dangerous. :)

RE: [videoblogging] VlogChallenge: Anyone Going to Post?

2006-04-06 Thread Monique Danielle

Hi
Steph,

Well,
ideally folks will get there posts in by Friday. But I probably will not post
the winner and a new challenge until Monday, so if absolutely necessary folks
can wait until Sunday to post. And remember, you can make that with
vlogchallenge in general, you can make a vlog specifically for the challenge, or
you can simply post one from your archive that relates.

Also,
I wanted to let you guys know that I spent two hours yesterday submitting the
site to numerous vlog directories and such. I will do my best to promote the
heck out of the site so that over time you guys will get folks really looking at
your entries. It's almost circular because I need viewers to get entries,
but I need entries to get viewers :)

There are a few Open Source and Linux NLE's but I don't have my

interesting and promising at the time I first looked at them but

1. How long has your vlog been up? 10 months
2. How many vlog entries do you have posted? ~60
3. How much traffic do you get? about 300 visits per video, 15-25 GB
of bandwidth/month, 82 subscribers in Feedburner.
4. What's the URL of your vlog? http://mortaine.blogspot.com
5. How many feeds and directories did you submit you site to? I don't
remember. I did them in batches.
6. How else do you promote your vlog? .sig file, and on my
professional website. I sometimes email or post to relevant groups I'm
a part of (ex: I posted a link to yesterday's talk on bettas on a
LiveJournal community dedicated to bettas).
7. Bookmark rate? I don't have stats on that.
8. Search Engine Saturation: 710
9. Link Popularity: 3,956
10. Google Page Rank: 5
11. Why do you vlog? For fun, to explore ideas that I'm interested in.
To show people that it's okay to be really bad at something. To test
out technology and write about it.

[videoblogging] Re: Traffic on Your Vlog?

2006-04-06 Thread Andy Carvin

 1. How long has your vlog been up? About two years, if you just
count video, though Andy Carvin's Waste of Bandwidth has been going
strong since October 1994. I posted my first video in Sept 2003, but I
didn't start doing it regularly until May 2004.

 2. How many vlog entries do you have posted? At least 114, plus a
handful of videos I've done for a few other sites.

 3. How much traffic do you get? typically around 650 visitors/1000
page views a day. Sometimes jumps into the tens of thousands when I
get farked, dugg or slashdotted. (Had a jump this week when the band
Gomez linked to me on their blog.)

 4. What's the URL of your vlog? http://www.andycarvin.com - with the
full video archive at http://www.andycarvin.com/archives/video/

 5. How many feeds and directories did you submit you site to? Not
sure; whatever the total is for pingomatic.

 6. How else do you promote your vlog? I occasionally post messages
about specific posts to around half a dozen email lists, plus sites
like omidyar.net, digitaldivide.net, etc.

 7. Bookmark rate? No idea. How do you calculate this?

 8. Search Engine Saturation: Marketleap says 14,380, but I have no
idea what that means.
 9. Link Popularity: 25,470 links according to marketleap.com.
Currently ranked #979 out of 700,000 blogs indexed by blogpulse.com,
but my ranking has ranged from the top 300 to the top 2500 depending
on how often I'm posting. Technorati Rank: 3,818 (742 links from 319
sites)

 10. Google Page Rank: 7 (is that good?)

 10. Why do you vlog? Because everyone should tell stories, and too
many stories around the world get overlooked.

That number is

Yes, that is good. The scale is one through ten, and you have to be a

Re: [videoblogging] Re: HDD for Video Blogging?

2006-04-06 Thread Harold Johnson

I've been looking at those hard driver camcorders, too, but I worry about their fragility. Would the hard drives be able to withstand the abuse that I tend to put my camera through? Maybe, maybe not...It's one thing to have a hard drive in an iPod (and of course, a laptop), but a camcorder? Not unless I can swap out that hard drive if I ever need to...

Harold

Bill, Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated. However, HDD stands for Hard Disc Drive, not High Definition (actually, it is pretty confusing. They really should have made
more of a differentiation between those two). With an HDD camcorder it's my understanding that you you don't need any tapes or discs or any other media to record onto. The camcorder houses a hard drive and you just record whenever and wherever and
then plug the camera direct into the computer to upload your footage. I think HDD camcorders are available in both HD and SD (though maybe only SD right now?).
--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com

camera. Your editing system, hardware and software needs to be up to snuff to handle it as you'll use more hard drive space and processing power in handling HD. But that's just my opinion.

Depends on what you mean by the same. Before I bought the dv camcorder
I have now, I did some test shots with a High 8 camcorder and dumped via
an s-video-to-USB-converter. The quality was crap. A dump of dv over
firewire is going to look a lot nicer and is more likely to be free of
defects.

If you mean to ask if it's a similar capture process, then they're
somewhat comparable.

virtualdub, whatever) this is goiing to come in the same as if I were
capturing from our old analog camcorder via my tv-tuner card, yes?

I haven't installed the optional Microsoft update to IE6 yet (or the IE7

it's interactivity which requires that initial click before receiving focus.

If you've got a pause/play/volume interface within your video (as with
FLV skins) then someone in a new Microsoft system will see a Please
click message during mouseover, and then they'll be able to shuttle the
video. (I'm not sure what happens if you use house chrome for playback

Summary: Should display fine regardless, but it's interactivity with the

Obolete info. The real news is that you can run Windows INSIDE OS X.
You just have overlooked my post earlier.

Parallels Opened Up Their Mac OS X Download this morning and they are
hosed. But when things calm down here's the links:

http://www.parallels.com/en/download/mac/ Downloads Page with 3
PDFs at the bottom to download and read all about it.

I think this is a better solution than Boot Camp. But they each may
have their time and place.

I like
vlogs that fit one of the two criteria below:
1.
Very clver - http://www.moronlife.com

Very personal/emotional/real. I can't think of an entire vlog that is like

[videoblogging] Re: New macs will run XP

2006-04-06 Thread Bill Streeter
Number one being that you can switch from one OS to the other
without having to reboot. There shouldn't be the performance issues
that there used to be with Virtual PC solution that they had on the
PowerPC based Macs, since there wouldn't be any processor emulation
involved.

I expect there to be a WINE-like solution soon. Where Windows
software can just run natively in the Mac OS without having to
bother to boot up Windows at all.

Ditto, it's exciting to know what's going on with people you know,
whether they're trying out a new way of expressing themselves, taking

I wasn't expecting it but now I look forward to seeing the videos of

We are going to try to get these in testinggrounds.loadedpun.com in

Anyone that wants to contribute a review of the sites send an email to

Check out the format of what we have for a review site and it would be
great if you could submit it in the same format. For what it's worth,
you will get a link to your site on that review page.

And to anyone else, pop by, leave a comment if you've used any of the
sites, the site providers are listening. Don't like something, bitch
about it, love something, rave about it. Bridge the gap between users
and providers. Just do it (uh-oh, that's copy right infringement
isn't it?)

That's how Ryanne and I met and started collaborating. It's also how she met Jay - now look at them!Actually many of the people that are now my friends started out as comments on a videoblog. Re: [videoblogging] New macs will run XP

2006-04-06 Thread Kunga
No the other way around. The Virtualization is supeior. But not less
dangerous like I thought this morning. Both native boot and
Virtualization are protected from viral attacks by virtue of their
temporary condition. Any attack is easily thwarted by killing the
attacked volume and replacing it with a new boot volume either way.
And no Windows viral attack can get at OS X at all.

Virtualization is superior because it runs as a window inside OS X so
that no booting back and forth is necessary to use one OS or the
other - they co-reside in OS X.

That's right Bill. What is a WINE-like solution Bill? Run Windows
apps without the OS? How can that be?

But no you will still need to launch windows in the Parallels
Workstation 2.1, but it is super fast as it does use the Intel
Virtualization hardware in the Core Duo to run everything right off
the Intel hardware. It's amazing. Everyone who has installed it says
it's running faster than anything they've ever had or seen on like 2

I admit that being able to toggle back and forth is nice ... but ...

if the VM app works like ones I have used in the windows world ... with
this application your windows system would exist as a bunch of files
within the MAC OS file system ... if yout MAC OS ever got hosed you'd
lose the Windows system too wouldnt you? Not so if you'd duel
booted ... they'd be seperate file systems / partitions / whatever.

Also ... I've
seen performance hits on windows VMs running on PC hardware (no chip
emmulation there either). I guess i'm thinking of this from a perspective of wanting to run very resource intensive apps.

I like VMs ... they definately win out in alot of scenarios for ease of

I will add to this...although I've not used them recently (in the last year or so) in the past, I would use vmware to do development and testing on different os's. I would find flaky little bugs that never showed in a full os.
As support and product developer for my employer, we see the odd incident come to us where we can't reproduce an issue, and if the user tires it on a non-vm...no repro either.Just my two cents. VM's have a huge advantage, but not a magic bullet quite yet.

Nope. This Virtualization is seated in Intel's new Virtualization
Hardware in the Duo Core Processors. Windows resides in a secure
volume that does not co-mingle with OS X. Read all about it:

Hello -
I noticed the thread on favorite vlogs going on and I wanted to take a
minute to explain a little more about The Public Address Network (aka
The PAN) , because it's a really good place to find new stuff to watch.
I started it because I wanted to see all of my favorite videos in one
place and I wanted to see them develop and bump into each other and
pretend that that's what tv actually is.. could be?
It's pretty much why I never have time to post here anymore.
I am totally obsessed with it, consumed.
You may even say in love.

Actually, what we are doing is quite simple
Adam Quirk ( http://www.bullemhead.com )
and myself have teamed up with
some of the most amazing vlogger-artist-filmmakers and friends

to create this daily videopodcast/videoblog.

Each day one of us pulls together a 15 min stream of videos from anywhere.

We also include all kinds of video oddities and rare finds from the

Speaking of Video Blogs. How bout this one of Half-Life running
natively in XP on a 2GHz Intel iMac? Pretty amazing stuff.

http://www.cabel.name/2006/04/boot-camp-first-look-half-life-2-

BTW Only the missing 3-D Support keeps Parallels Workstation 2.1 from
being a gaming environ. I IMed with Parallels this afternoon and they
said that 3-D support will be in their 3.0 version this summer. Said
it's simply a matter of getting driver info from the card
manufacturers that are in the Macs. So the Dual Boot may not be much
of a needed factor by Fall for even the most demanding 3-D XP
applications/games.
