Well, I wouldn't say I just can't get enough of large files, I just don't really mind longer videos. Some people just make long videos, and if I enjoy them, I watch em! (yes, I'm looking at you, Mr. Richard Show.) After watching the Pan, I can see being on the train and enjoying the 15min...chapter markers would be nice on a portable device, but I also don't feel a need to have their Pan videos sent to me separately. There is something to be said for a curated show-- much like Liquid Television that used to be on MTV. (a compliation show of various animators) As time goes on, and Adam and Mica amass a large collection of original stuff, this could be a very fast-paced, entertaining 15min. You would just have to keep up with the shows before it ate your harddrive away. If it has not captured me by then (or if it's not from a friend perhaps), I delete it and move on to the next. again, size is not much of a factor here. while i constantly find great stuff, most videos fail to capture my attention these days (this is more of a statement about the increase in the number of videos, not a decrease in quality - there's just a lot more stuff out there these days) the main reason for stopping a download: i found something else I want sooner my download speed is usually in the 512Kb-1Mb range with no other limits (e.g., total downloads not limited). while this is not super fast, i would probably feel different (i.e., more selective) if I had slower access. i like streaming for the video conferences, but it does not seem to make much sense to me for vlogs (from a viewer standpoint, it stops and starts too much and it's usually hard to fast forward). hope that helps Stephanie Bryant wrote: I find myself revisiting this question every time I post a large file to my vlog. Just curious about the answers-- someone recently said they wanted longer than 10-minute vlogs, because they wanted to really sit down and watch stuff, but I wonder about that. It has lots of good thing to say about the videoblogs (like mine :) ) it references and generally makes videoblogging sound like this new and exciting thing that's happening - which I certainly think is true. There is one subtle point that they hit on a number of times in the article that I think is off base. And the NY Times isn't the only one to this, it happens in almost every article written in the mainstream press. Some quotes from the article: What makes Rocketboom so different from most of the other video blogs, or vlogs, that have popped up in the last year or so is that the daily episodes are consistently entertaining. Many of the world's other vlogs are closer in form to diaries or home movies - with all the tedium that can imply. Most of the vlogs are quite boring So here's where I think they miss the point: The value judgement of consistently entertaining or boring is holdover from commercial TV or film where everyone's goal is to be entertaining to as many people as possible so that they can sell advertising or movie tickets to recoup the enormous costs of production and distribution. While this might still hold somehwhat true in the context of talking about Rocketboom, it's not relevant to the vast majority of videoblogs. It's personal media. For the most part videoblogs are narrowly targeted to a small audience who I'm sure finds them consistently entertaining. They are not necessarily meant to be or try to be entertaining to a general audience. And because, unlike Rocketboom, an episode really only costs $20 or more likely $2, they can afford to be specific in what audience they aim for. To be clear here, I'm not saying that I personally think that every videoblog out there is fantastic (my tastes aren't THAT eclectic). It just doesn't matter whether I think of them at all. What matters is that they can videoblog for what ever reason they choose to - to keep in touch with friends, document their lives, whatever. That in and of itself is a powerful thing. They don't have to be everything to everyone. The beauty is they can just be what they are and you can freely pick and choose the ones that seem to be made just for you. There are already enough people doing it that I have about 80 videoblogs that I personally subscribe to that create more

[videoblogging] Re: making directories
Well, the links on my site usually stem from one of two things: 1) I had some sort of interaction with them that I enjoyed and probably remember in relation to Vloggertown. So I put them on my videoblog so I can remember my neighbors. 2) They had something on their site that I enjoyed for my own twisted reasons. Not necessarily because I think they have some Great Body Of Super Video or anything; probably just for one video. I don't think many of these people in my sidebar don't even link back to me-- and why should they? I don't admit I know the drunk in the corner sleeping in his own puke, but actually, I know him very well. I see and talk to him often, but I don't have to admit it in public! I don't think many of these sidebar links on sites are there because of anything other than because they like the content or from some sort of interaction with the human behind the site. But of course, if you want someone to notice you linking to them still works better than a webring... but don't expect the linklove recipricated just for that reason alone. If it did, sites like Rocketboom and human-dog would have a page FILLED with recipricals...and that, for a directory, would help noone. But what do I know about why other people link... this is just why I do it. Here's my view. First, with video, you need a lot more info to decide where to put your attention than with text, because video demands more attention (you can't just quickly scan it like a text post, for example). So for video, you need more filters, metadata, information that helps you decide what to put your limited attention towards. It's an attention war. Hence, directories can be useful. Second: we as vloggers, for some reason, aren't really linking a lot to each other's videos. I'm not sure why that is. But it does mean that we have less interlinking than textbloggers to help people discover new stuff. Hence, a directory makes sense, again. Third: search for video is an unsolved problem, and will continue to be, especially for our type of long tail video. Hence, .. you get the picture :) Then again I could be wrong also and Google might come out with a great algorythmic way to find videos you want to watch, or we might all start linking like crazy to each others videos and we wouldn't need directories to discover cool stuff. Ok, first of all, I didn't get invited and I don't really care. It's just I have been reading the list lately and many of the topics don't interest me right now... As someone who works in development of a couple open media programs, I am not a programmer-- like how Josh put it. But it wasn't filled with programmers. There were people on all sides of the open media workhorse. From programmers to dreamers-- which is a good thing. I have often sat in these sorts of things where its only programmers. I don't have to program to know what I'm talking about in the Personal Media Revolution (catchphrases are fun!). What was strange was to have this hey, I just walked into this and it's great-- watch us on the live stream! Then to have us look at pics of you guys talking. Nothing wrong with it-- someone may want a new desktop pic-- it was just a little strange. Unmediated.com was one of the hosts of the event and you guys help with Unmediated. It's your event, and you invited us to watch you talk. No big whoop. I hope it was a success and a lot of positive things came out of it-- which is what happens when you get smart, passionate people all in one room. If you havent been in that situation folks, you are missing out. And don't blame Josh and Jay-- only YOU can get yourself into those situations. Don't blame one closed door. Especially when we are talking about these sorts of things. Closed doors are a given. If they wanted it bigger and with sponsorship they could have gone that route, but they didn't. Whatever. Conference Politics are a bitch and this wasn't even a conference. Hey, the Flash Conference is in a half-hour-- maybe someone will be there and we can really get the blood boiling!:) (mine is just filled with coffee right now...that's my excuse for such a long email so late in the day.) love schlomo http://schlomolog.blogspot.com http://webzine2005.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Deirdre Straughan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Okay, constraints noted. Of course anyone has a right to run whatever event they want to in whatever way they want to, but, after all the democratic rhetoric in this group, it gets up my nose to find out about an invitation only event only after the fact, and to see a list of familiar names among the attendees, many of whom I would not define as developers (in fact, JD Lasica referred to the group as developers, filmmakers, citizens media advocates and other creative people). It feels exclusive, in a bad way. Is that where y'all want to be going with the concept of OPEN media? On 10/25/05, Joshua Kinberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think this is silly. I know I've probably abused this list this morning with what is entertaining me, but I throw up the big W and say whatever. If it's too much, just let me know, yo. Anyway, I thought this little post was interesting. Basically, he is trying to come up with ideas on how to tag audio and video by using wikis. Hopefully, by having everyone contribute to the description, the more relevent data would float to the top. http://dorrianporter.typepad.com/silicon_valley_himalayan_/2005/09/audio_video_sea.html I, for one, would try this out if I knew how to implement it on my page. If someone in the know wants to test this idea out with my site, email me and you are more than welcome to put it up. schlomo http://schlomolog.blogspot.com http://webzine2005.com Yahoo! [videoblogging] Re: apple store presentations
Haven't we treaded this path before? I have always stated my issues with the Apple stores; mainly because they tend to be a more hey, lets watch a videoblog than hey, I want to actually show you how to make one. I mean, it isn't an either/or presentation, it's just not delving as far as I would like them in terms of having the audience create. I've taught various folks almost a dozen times now-- but how many of them have actually jumped the ship from viewer to creator? I'm not sure. I know I've gotten a couple of them to do it, but obviously, most never actually do it. And I don't have any sort of real numbers to share. Node 101ers: after so many sessions with people, do you have a concept of how many people have started to create? Have you guys figured out more precisely what works and what doesn't? It's one thing to teach, it's another thing to learn from you teaching. In just curious as we teach people all over the place, we all learning from each other what kinda works and what really works. In terms of sucking up to apple during apple presentations: It's a moot point so far. They don't seem to really care. It's not like we are actually creating a videoblog in front of their eyes so you would have to show them your project in Vegas or whatever. Except when Adam plays those videos with the profanity. I don't think they like that! schlomo http://webzine2005.com http://schlomolog.blogspot.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Regardless of where anybody stands on the Apple issue, it clearly is an issue, its fine if some people have no problem with it, but I hope thats not the same as not seeing why anybody else might have a problem with it. [videoblogging] Re: Disclosures, disclosures
I'm sorry for not disclosing who I am, but better late than never: I make and have made media in the past-- for mad loot. I made Dana Plato's last movie (where she was the mother of a boy who talks to his dog). I have made a movie where I learned that Burt Ward (Robin for the TV 1960's version of Batman) is mean and leacherous. When I say mad loot, I'm talking about super big piles of cash. These projects prove it. I have had a subscription to McSweeney's for four years. The last movie I saw was The Devil's Rejects, a movie starring and directed by Rob Zombie. I saw this movie not for Rob (who I could care less about), but because I like really bad horror movies. I am patiently waiting for someone to make a videoblog centered around cheesy horror cliches while still showing us their lives. I believe this would be best created by someone who lives in a grain silo deep in the Heart Of America. If that is You, please go to freevlog.org and set it up posthaste. I have been to Woodstock. Not the first one, the second one. I was working with Barbara Kopple on a documentary. I told the lead singer of Blind Melon, fuck Blind Melon! He killed himself a couple weeks later. I know deep in my heart that I did not cause his depression, but I don't think I helped it either. I had a high-level meeting with Satan himself, who already had heard about my work and has already given me a nice office in hell if I so choose to commute from San Francisco. I had a similar meeting with God and he offered basically the same thing except I get to still work on a Mac as opposed to WinXP. And the food is more expensive in Heaven, but the view makes up for it. I'm not sure why I am disclosing all of this to you guys. I don't know most of the people here and the few that I do probably already know something about me. Have I told you that I've been videoblogging? That's probably the thing you really need to know about me on this list. schlomo http://schlomolog.blogspot.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, David Yirchott [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If I may, let me present a fuller disclosure than before: For what it is worth, I have enjoyed reading the disclosures others have posted. Now video bloggers, or vloggers, are adding a twist to the genre, documenting their lives in mini-movies. Laura Sydell reports on the growing community of people who are turning their lives into grassroots reality TV. Though it has been possible to put video on the Web for a long time, widespread adoption of broadband access has made it easier for amateurs to do. In addition, the advent of RSS feeds allows users to automatically receive updates from vlogs they like. Most vloggers admit they have a limited audience.
