Ehh, they don't need a warning. They will handle it. (I've been there a bunch and you can't
warn them about anything--they are too busy singing.)

Yeah, the idea is to have the Meet The Vloggers thing, get a quick bite to eat in the
neighborhood, and head over to my bar for the Friday meetup/band thingy/whathaveyou.
(or we can just head over to the bar and order some pizza or something)

The band will probably play around 9ish.

Then the insanity will start.

[videoblogging] Video Conversations

is probably one of my favorite parts of this whole videoblogging fad. Seriously. The
problem I'm having is actually finding all of the ones from the Golf Host With Boobs
topic...probably because we all are not tagging our videos with Golf Host With Boobs...

Does anyone have a list of all of them? I haven't been keeping up with the email thread, but I
want to watch all of the video responses.
Maybe a webjay list or something?

[videoblogging] Re: VloggerCon Hotels?

2006-03-30 Thread johngaltsjournal
Hey all

Sorry for my absenteeism, but I'm working very hard on vloggercon and can't
keep up
woth all the yahoogroup emails...but I did see this very important thread.

Just confirmed 10 rooms at Becks Motor Lodge-- one block away from the
Vloggercon
venue:
http://www.google.com/local?
f=qhl=ensll=37.0625,-95.677068sspn=67.295907,102.65625q=becks+motor
+lodge,+san+franciscolatlng=37775000,-122418333,4083638152369774950

(if that link dont work, just google becks motor lodge, san francisco

They offered 10 rooms for $135/night June 9,10,11... These rooms have 2 Queen
Sized
beds, so people can join up and save. (70 per night is pretty darn good out
here)

We will be finding more hotels for you folks..We are trying. We are a small
group making a
big event that I hope you all enjoy.

 1. we visited Becks Motor Lodge today and schlomo spoke with the manager
about reserving a block of rooms at a discount. they said that the
owner would call back tomorrow with the details. the main virtues of
this hotel are that it is less than half a block from the conference
site, is relatively inexpensive for SF and has a good number of rooms.

 2. the conference site is very close to a subway stop and so we are also
looking for a hotel that is near another stop so that it will be just a
few steps from hotel to the conference via public transport.

 3. i have started a resource wiki page for vloggercon. It includes some
minimal hotel info at this moment (e.g., google map of hotels near the
Swedish American hall). i hope to update that page quite a bit in the
 next few days.

2006-03-30 Thread johngaltsjournal
Here is another one I got today from the Mossier, where Susan of kitykity.com
fame is
staying. Keep in mind these have shared bathrooms (but maybe you will be
sharing with
Susan!):

Hello! Thank you for considering The Mosser Hotel. We do still have a limited
number of
Shared bath guest rooms with one twin bed (6) for your dates. I can offer those
to you for
$79 per night. We also have the Shared bath guest rooms with one Queen sized
bed for
$89 per night. To make a reservation, I will need the names of the guest and a
credit card.

I'm going to reserve all of these rooms-- let us know if you take one so I put
it in your
name!

The easiest way I have found is making a sheet where they can just
write down their username and password. Especially since many times
they are learning this on someone elses computer.

 and how
long has it taken you to run sessions explaining it all

IT takes a while for me, but I make sure they understand that this
is a one time process so they wont have to do it again (hopefully).
Plus, just the time it takes the internet to bounce back
verification emails and such... Sometimes, I show a video about
what we have already talked about or are about to discuss (like
tagging. Luxomedia has my favorite video on tagging) while we wait
for everyone to catch up.

Hope that helps-- it sounds clunky but it works for me.

The service runs off my dreamhost server using vastmachine.com, just to

I love how currently, we have FireAnt (that is better than iTunes) for

[videoblogging] Re: Long and File Size: Revisiting the question

2006-01-16 Thread johngaltsjournal
Well, I wouldn't say I just can't get enough of large files, I just don't
really mind longer
videos.

Some people just make long videos, and if I enjoy them, I watch em! (yes, I'm
looking at
you, Mr. Richard Show.)

After watching the Pan, I can see being on the train and enjoying the
15min...chapter
markers would be nice on a portable device, but I also don't feel a need to
have their Pan
videos sent to me separately. There is something to be said for a curated
show-- much
like Liquid Television that used to be on MTV. (a compliation show of various
animators)
As time goes on, and Adam and Mica amass a large collection of original stuff,
this could
be a very fast-paced, entertaining 15min.

You would just have to keep up with the shows before it ate your harddrive
away. But that
goes for my feeds in general...they always pile up.

background. i generally multi-task and so rarely care how long the
download takes. i prefer not to view vids in the browser, i prefer a
   sizable player like fireant.

in general, i don't really care how big or how long a video is as long
as the content is worth it (there is a limit of course, I'm not looking
to download gigabyte files just yet). very few pieces of media can hold
my full attention for 40 minutes anymore (especially movies and TV).

i don't generally stop watching when it gets long, i usually just fast
   forward.

if i do stop, i generally stop watching a video within the first 30
seconds. If it has not captured me by then (or if it's not from a friend
perhaps), I delete it and move on to the next. again, size is not much
   of a factor here.

while i constantly find great stuff, most videos fail to capture my
attention these days (this is more of a statement about the increase in
the number of videos, not a decrease in quality - there's just a lot
more stuff out there these days)

the main reason for stopping a download: i found something else I want
   sooner

my download speed is usually in the 512Kb-1Mb range with no other limits
(e.g., total downloads not limited). while this is not super fast, i
would probably feel different (i.e., more selective) if I had slower
  access.

i like streaming for the video conferences, but it does not seem to make
much sense to me for vlogs (from a viewer standpoint, it stops and
starts too much and it's usually hard to fast forward).

   hope that helps

   Stephanie Bryant wrote:

How much is too much? At what point will you (personally, yourself, as
   a vlog watcher):
   1) Stop downloading the file.
   2) Stop watching the movie (how many minutes, assuming it's not too
  boring).

Just curious about the answers-- someone recently said they wanted
longer than 10-minute vlogs, because they wanted to really sit down
and watch stuff, but I wonder about that. A 10 minute vlog is 30 MB,
easily. A 40 minute vlog would be almost 100 MB? Is that worth your
time, bandwidth, and download speed? Would it make more sense to
   stream instead?

Well I thought that overall that was a very good article. It has
 lots
of good thing to say about the videoblogs (like mine :) ) it
references and generally makes videoblogging sound like this new
 and
exciting thing that's happening - which I certainly think is
 true.

There is one subtle point that they hit on a number of times in
 the
article that I think is off base. And the NY Times isn't the
 only one
to this, it happens in almost every article written in the
 mainstream
   press.
   Some quotes from the article:
What makes Rocketboom so different from most of the other video
blogs, or vlogs, that have popped up in the last year or so is
 that
the daily episodes are consistently entertaining.

Many of the world's other vlogs are closer in form to diaries or
home movies - with all the tedium that can imply.

Most of the vlogs are quite boring

So here's where I think they miss the point: The value judgement
 of
consistently entertaining or boring is holdover from
 commercial
TV or film where everyone's goal is to be entertaining to as many
people as possible so that they can sell advertising or movie
 tickets
to recoup the enormous costs of production and distribution.
 While
this might still hold somehwhat true in the context of talking
 about
Rocketboom, it's not relevant to the vast majority of videoblogs.
It's personal media. For the most part videoblogs are narrowly
targeted to a small audience who I'm sure finds them consistently
entertaining. They are not necessarily meant to be or try to be
entertaining to a general audience. And because, unlike
 Rocketboom,
an episode really only costs $20 or more likely $2, they can
 afford
to be specific in what audience they aim for.

To be clear here, I'm not saying that I personally think that
 every
videoblog out there is fantastic (my tastes aren't THAT
 eclectic). It
just doesn't matter whether I think of them at all. What matters
 is
that they can videoblog for what ever reason they choose to - to
 keep
in touch with friends, document their lives, whatever. That in
 and of
itself is a powerful thing. They don't have to be everything to
everyone. The beauty is they can just be what they are and you
 can
freely pick and choose the ones that seem to be made just for
 you.
There are already enough people doing it that I have about 80
videoblogs that I personally subscribe to that create more

You are right Eric.

If I had some coffee beforehand, I would have made sure I mentioned that,
Corporate or
not, I do enjoy a good handjob.

I definitely don't shirk away from the intersection of Art and Commerce.
Often, that is
some of the most entertaining moments in the process of creation. (not
entertaining while
going on, but usually after the fact. Lots of learning in those moments.)

I like field trips to offices and free lunch-- but only after coffee. Of which
now I've had a
very large cup to the point that I make handjob jokes on large lists.

2005-12-08 Thread johngaltsjournal
I'll vouch for the Chelsea Hotel-- that is usually the place I tend to stay if
I dont stay with
friends. The price is right, its in walking distance to most places I enjoy
hanging out at in

The place is no 4 star hotel, but I love it just the same.

Lesson to be learned: If you're not showing something visually

What does this say about news shows like Rocketboom or Mobuzz? Sure

[videoblogging] Re: making directories

2005-12-05 Thread johngaltsjournal
Well, the links on my site usually stem from one of two things:

1) I had some sort of interaction with them that I enjoyed and probably
remember in
relation to Vloggertown. So I put them on my videoblog so I can remember my
neighbors.

2) They had something on their site that I enjoyed for my own twisted reasons.
Not
necessarily because I think they have some Great Body Of Super Video or
anything;
probably just for one video.

I don't think many of these people in my sidebar don't even link back to me--
and why
should they? I don't admit I know the drunk in the corner sleeping in his own
puke, but
actually, I know him very well. I see and talk to him often, but I don't have
to admit it in
public!

I don't think many of these sidebar links on sites are there because of
anything other than
because they like the content or from some sort of interaction with the human
behind the
site.

But of course, if you want someone to notice you linking to them still works
better than a
webring... but don't expect the linklove recipricated just for that reason
alone. If it did,
sites like Rocketboom and human-dog would have a page FILLED with
recipricals...and
that, for a directory, would help noone.

But what do I know about why other people link... this is just why I do it.

(posting twice today because I had two cups of coffee before food..)

I think linking is frequently done on the basis that the more links you put
 on your site,
the more hits you get.

For that reason, at least with websites, you link to anyone who will link
 back to you.

I have noticed some vloggers who have great vlogs and who link to others who
 have
outstanding vlogs. However, I also have seen people with a long list of links
that are
essentially meaningless.

Someone should develop explained linking. In other words, if I link to
 jonny goldstein

interested.

If this can be done and I just don't know how, excuse my ignorance. Has

You're assuming that the lact of a directory is a problem.

   Here's my view.

First, with video, you need a lot more info to decide where to put
your attention than with text, because video demands more attention
(you can't just quickly scan it like a text post, for example). So for
video, you need more filters, metadata, information that helps you
decide what to put your limited attention towards. It's an attention
war. Hence, directories can be useful.

Second: we as vloggers, for some reason, aren't really linking a lot
to each other's videos. I'm not sure why that is. But it does mean
that we have less interlinking than textbloggers to help people
discover new stuff. Hence, a directory makes sense, again.

Third: search for video is an unsolved problem, and will continue to
be, especially for our type of long tail video. Hence, .. you get the
   picture :)

Then again I could be wrong also and Google might come out with a
great algorythmic way to find videos you want to watch, or we might
all start linking like crazy to each others videos and we wouldn't
need directories to discover cool stuff. Oh well.

have talks
about CC (Mia from Creative Commons is speaking), OurMedia (with JD Lasica),

As an online article, I thought it was kinda strange that they didn't link to
any of us

in where
the hotlinks are located. They have that left-hand sidebar of hosting
companies where
none of them are hotlinked.

You would think the NYT would know how to make a useable webpage...but then,
they
just want me as a soundbite-- I doubt they care if anyone actually saw my work.

But my family and friends got a kick out of it, so something good came out of

Join Pixel Corps every Tuesday in November as they showcase different aspects
of producing,
shooting and distributing a television show over the Net.
November 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29,

Television over the Net. Hmm. It kinda bothers me. Am I the only one?

[videoblogging] Re: Pictures of vlogconference

2005-10-25 Thread johngaltsjournal
Ok, first of all, I didn't get invited and I don't really care. It's just I
have been reading the
list lately and many of the topics don't interest me right now... As someone
who works in
development of a couple open media programs, I am not a programmer-- like how
Josh
put it. But it wasn't filled with programmers. There were people on all sides
of the open
media workhorse. From programmers to dreamers-- which is a good thing. I have
often
sat in these sorts of things where its only programmers. I don't have to
program to know
what I'm talking about in the Personal Media Revolution (catchphrases are fun!).

What was strange was to have this hey, I just walked into this and it's
great-- watch us on
the live stream! Then to have us look at pics of you guys talking. Nothing
wrong with
it-- someone may want a new desktop pic-- it was just a little strange.
Unmediated.com
was one of the hosts of the event and you guys help with Unmediated. It's your
event, and
you invited us to watch you talk. No big whoop.

I hope it was a success and a lot of positive things came out of it-- which is
what happens
when you get smart, passionate people all in one room. If you havent been in
that
situation folks, you are missing out. And don't blame Josh and Jay-- only YOU
can get
yourself into those situations. Don't blame one closed door. Especially when
we are
talking about these sorts of things. Closed doors are a given.

If they wanted it bigger and with sponsorship they could have gone that route,
but they
didn't. Whatever.

Conference Politics are a bitch and this wasn't even a conference.

Hey, the Flash Conference is in a half-hour-- maybe someone will be there and
we can
really get the blood boiling!:)

(mine is just filled with coffee right now...that's my excuse for such a long
email so late in
the day.)

Of course anyone has a right to run whatever event they want to in whatever
way they want to, but, after all the democratic rhetoric in this group, it
gets up my nose to find out about an invitation only event only after the
fact, and to see a list of familiar names among the attendees, many of whom
I would not define as developers (in fact, JD Lasica referred to the group
as developers, filmmakers, citizens media advocates and other creative
people). It feels exclusive, in a bad way. Is that where y'all want to be
going with the concept of OPEN media?

If the organizers choose to do a conference with sponsors and the whole
she-bang next time, then that would certainly be great, but as it was there
were serious constraints on resources and there was barely enough space for
  those who were invited.

There was an open chat and an open stream on the web though.

[videoblogging] A note on Tagging

2005-09-15 Thread johngaltsjournal
I know I've probably abused this list this morning with what is entertaining
me, but I throw up
the big W and say whatever. If it's too much, just let me know, yo.

Anyway, I thought this little post was interesting. Basically, he is trying to
come up with
ideas on how to tag audio and video by using wikis. Hopefully, by having
everyone
contribute to the description, the more relevent data would float to the top.

http://dorrianporter.typepad.com/silicon_valley_himalayan_/2005/09/audio_video_sea.html

I, for one, would try this out if I knew how to implement it on my page. If
someone in the
know wants to test this idea out with my site, email me and you are more than
welcome to
put it up.

[videoblogging] Re: apple store presentations

2005-08-23 Thread johngaltsjournal

Haven't we treaded this path before?

I have always stated my issues with the Apple stores; mainly because they tend to be a
more hey, lets watch a videoblog than hey, I want to actually show you how to make
one. I mean, it isn't an either/or presentation, it's just not delving as far as I would like
them in terms of having the audience create.

I've taught various folks almost a dozen times now-- but how many of them have actually
jumped the ship from viewer to creator? I'm not sure. I know I've gotten a couple of them
to do it, but obviously, most never actually do it. And I don't have any sort of real
numbers to share.

Node 101ers: after so many sessions with people, do you have a concept of how many
people have started to create? Have you guys figured out more precisely what works and
what doesn't? It's one thing to teach, it's another thing to learn from you teaching. In just
curious as we teach people all over the place, we all learning from each other what kinda
works and what really works.

In terms of sucking up to apple during apple presentations: It's a moot point so far. They
don't seem to really care. It's not like we are actually creating a videoblog in front of their
eyes so you would have to show them your project in Vegas or whatever.

Except when Adam plays those videos with the profanity. I don't think they like that!

I put myself in your position--just in it for the fun of it, not expecting to create anything
monumental, mostly blog-type stuff, things to augment what I write in my daily journal,
etc. At 62, I'm not likely to get really very technical or do anything that would be of
interest to most of the vloggers I see here, but learning all this stuff is fun for me and who

I'm curious about demographics. It seems like the vast majority of the vloggers I've

getting into this--and if there is anybody past the age of 50 who is finding this as

I have this problem because I use a still cam for my videos. The reason why you dont hear

I use ffmpegX to convert it to an avi file. Then it's editable! (It's a pain having to convert

I think you can find a copy of ffmpegX on versiontracker.com

You are going somewhere and you use
  vlogging in an appropriate way.

 Hey Chris,
I appreciate the compliment and recommendation -- However, I do still
think that there is value in personal media.

I am working on a politically-focused documentary with a focus on
developing tools for scalable collaboration, but this doesn't discredit
the value gained from vlogs that are focused on personal _expression_.

There is a certainly a difference in audiences, as well as a difference
in function, but I don't distinguish between an appropriate or
 inappropriate use between the two.

The relative appropriateness of any vlog is a value judgment that is up
to each vlog consumer to make -- I don't see a universal right or
wrong way that anyone should use their vlog.

Just as there is an emerging ecosystem of blogs that range from personal
to explicitly political to a business-oriented knowledge management
system, I believe that the same will be true of the vlogosphere as it
 continues to grow.

Diversity is a good thing because we're all not interested in the same
 things.

With that said, I do think that there is a lot of potential for using
 vlogs for political activism.

In fact, that is one reason why I'm using the open source Drupal /
CivicSpace platform, because a lot of the tools that I want to create
for collaborative media could feed into the political campaigns of the
 election cycle.

CivicSpace came out of the community software that the Howard Dean
campaign used, and I've been in contact with some of the developers
focusing on how vlogs will be integrated into political campaigns.

I'll probably be asking for more feedback and brainstorming at some
point, but I just wanted to make it clear that it is not my intention to
discredit the legitimacy of how anyone else chooses to use their vlog.

  Thanks,

[videoblogging] Re: call for entries-documentary advertising

2005-08-11 Thread johngaltsjournal

Well, to give you credit, you did start your post with I know this is going make you sick,
so at least you knew there would be someone around here who would spout off about this.

If people want to turn their videoblogs into viral marketing schemes, then rock on.
There's plenty of blogspot.com spaces just ready to be filled with it. Heck some use their
vlogs to hype the products they create themselves-- marketing themselves and their
product in the happy blanket of Independent Media, Community, and Videoblogging. It's
just how the world works, and you should never trust the media... no matter how small it
is.

We see this all the time in the blogging world-- transparent advertising through content--
and of course it's gonna be a part of the videoblogging world.

[videoblogging] Re: Disclosures, disclosures

2005-08-08 Thread johngaltsjournal

I'm sorry for not disclosing who I am, but better late than never:

I make and have made media in the past-- for mad loot. I made Dana Plato's last movie
(where she was the mother of a boy who talks to his dog). I have made a movie where I
learned that Burt Ward (Robin for the TV 1960's version of Batman) is mean and
leacherous. When I say mad loot, I'm talking about super big piles of cash. These
projects prove it.

I have had a subscription to McSweeney's for four years.

The last movie I saw was The Devil's Rejects, a movie starring and directed by Rob Zombie.
I saw this movie not for Rob (who I could care less about), but because I like really bad
horror movies. I am patiently waiting for someone to make a videoblog centered around
cheesy horror cliches while still showing us their lives. I believe this would be best created
by someone who lives in a grain silo deep in the Heart Of America. If that is You, please
go to freevlog.org and set it up posthaste.

I have been to Woodstock. Not the first one, the second one. I was working with Barbara
Kopple on a documentary. I told the lead singer of Blind Melon, fuck Blind Melon! He
killed himself a couple weeks later. I know deep in my heart that I did not cause his
depression, but I don't think I helped it either.

I had a high-level meeting with Satan himself, who already had heard about my work and
has already given me a nice office in hell if I so choose to commute from San Francisco. I
had a similar meeting with God and he offered basically the same thing except I get to still
work on a Mac as opposed to WinXP. And the food is more expensive in Heaven, but the
view makes up for it.

I'm not sure why I am disclosing all of this to you guys. I don't know most of the people
here and the few that I do probably already know something about me.

Have I told you that I've been videoblogging? That's probably the thing you really need to
know about me on this list.

If a videoblog averages 2,000 hits per episode, would you pay $40 to
place a short video at the end of the video?

The tricky part is that advertisers pay those rates for either beginning or
interstitial (in between) ad placements. Most valued are the ones that run
before the content. I haven't heard of anyone paying to run a commercial
after the viewer has gotten what he/she wanted.

I am asssuming the rates you quote are for successfully completed commercial
streams and not based on the number of people only watching the content.

What would you pay to place an ad on a videoblog?

2005-08-04 Thread johngaltsjournal

All this money talk of the last week, of course, made it to my video camera:

Pretty much every time I speak to someone about Videoblogging, they bring up the topic of
money. Except this time.

ps
there is no commercial in this video. But I think this post is pretty much a
commercial...where's the Best Foods mayo?
