Given all the things going on in my life, there's absolutely no way on
God's Earth that I'm going to be able to make a video every day in
November. And I know a lot of you will feel the same. Which got me
thinking about ways to make it work.

Of course, if you want to go ahead and do one video a day every day in
 November, that's GREAT.

But in addition, I thought maybe instead of 30 people all trying to
make 30 videos, we could collaborate - 30 videobloggers each making
 just one video.

Some of the best stuff that came out of the first Navlopomo in 2007
was when people started responding to and remixing each others' videos.

So... How about this? You choose a day in November - and on that day,
you have to make a video inspired in some way by the previous day's
video. A big linear game of videoblogging Consequences.

What do you think? Are there 30 people out there who are up for
this? If you're up for it, reply here.

Same here. I'm a overheating/no second memory slot victim, too. But I
had Applecare and after some prodding and tears they did cover the
repair (more like a replacement, really). I was *so* grateful for
Applecare when my Powerbook fried out. I'd nevernevernever buy another
laptop without it.

I actually always buy extended warantees for expensive
electronics/appliances that I don't plan on upgrading soon. Computers,
cameras, dishwashers. Clock radio? Not so much.

I think warrantees are always worth it. Peace of mind. Granted,
Applecare ain't cheap, but neither is a new computer. Free repair vs
$2000? No contest.

[videoblogging] Re: we should all enter this one

2008-02-20 Thread missbhavens1969
Yeah. This comes up all the time in my house: the relationship/lack of
relationship between class and artsy as a label. Oh, yes. So
familiar. This is the conversation that comes up when my artsy
fiancee gives me (reasonably good-natured) grief about not
understanding whatever artsy static he bought from Aquarius Records
that he likes to pretend is music, or an artsy painting painting I
don't get or a sculpture I just plain don't like. Suddenly, in his
eyes I'm put in the category of The Masses (that's the term I use
instead of mainstream or normal, by the way).

The Masses watch movies that star The Rock. They listen to Z100. They
shop at Wal-Mart and buy all their clean CDs there, too. They
subscribe to Us magazine.

Now, I don't actually do any of these things, not that there's
anything really wrong with them (except for movies with The Rock.
That's truly unforgivable.). But I get pissy about it. I'm being
categorized and i don't like it. So I do it right back, and call him a
snob.

Why? Because he's a snob. An artsy snob.

Artsy people watch 2001: A Space Odyssey over and over and over and
when you ask questions about what the hell is going on, they roll
their eyes. They really dig Duchamp. The only good music is music that
absolutely no one else is listening too. I could go on.

But why does my fiancee the Sensitive Artist hate the artsy label?
Because he is, in fact a blue collar and normal person who got in
many a nose-breaking fight in South Boston as a youth for being so
artsy. Fair enough.

There's a lot of crossover between artsy and The Masses. Mr. Artsy
recently rented Night at the Museum and no, I'll never, ever, EVER
let him live it down. I think he's even claimed he thought it was a
documentary.

As humans (and more specifically, I think American humans have a worse
time of it) our brains jump to labels. We label, we classify, we file,
we pigeonhole. Makes things easier, and frequently it's just wrong.
But it's better to try and make a go of it with air quotes, than not.

Carry on,
Bekah

 words in your mouth, David.)

However, I agree with Cheryl ... I don't see what Charles said as all
that bad ... I like artsy stuff and I wasn't insulted.

There is a reason the term artsy has common use (and it DOES have
common use). In terms of film/video, I have believed that the term
artsy is used because it's generally describing a subset of stuff
out there that is often outside of mainstream
consumption/expectation ... perhaps normal is a poor term to use for
mainstream but cut him some slack ... he did quote it - which has
the generally accepted implication of for my lack of a better word -
and he has since apologized for not having a better word for it.

It's the nature of the human brain to classify and categorize and
label ... Charles didn't create the distinction of mainstream or
artsy ... and he's hardly the first to recognize it.

All that being said ... I'd love to see some vlogger win this contest
 no matter their style! :-)

Holy crap this sucks.

I was VERY much looking forward to buying an E1 this summer. I've
never had trouble with my old C6, but I'd just about kill for better
sound and low-light performance. Don't think a dead screen after 6
months is worth the trade, though. And a two-month repair wait is
totally bananas.

To David I'd still recommend an old c6. You can get them pretty
cheaply on eBay.

If I do spring for an E1 you'd better believe I'll pay extra for
in-store coverage, which I don't usually do. This time, though, it
seems essential.

Damn. What a bummer.

clarified and GOT IT. Nothing wrong with that. What's wrong with a
passionate conversation? In fact, Steve and Zadi themselves were the
ones with the MOST mature reaction in the end. Others got all
playground defensive (hey, man, leave my friends alone!), some got
off track entirely, some got it and some didn't. I assume that you
didn't watch Heath's response video, or Steve Zadi's response
video, or Eric Rey's response video OR read all 73 (and counting)
comments because if you did, you'd have a clue. Where are the ones
who stood up for her today? Ummm...she stood up for herself, thanks
for asking, and with class and grace (Steve exhibited grace, too.
He's very graceful for a Dude).

Leave if you want, that's fine. Hell, I've left before. This place
can get a person edgy, no doubt. But at it's core it remains a very
helpful and supportive place. I believe the fact that less gets
posted here than in the past is 100% because of the immediacy of
Twitter, not because there's no help or friendship or support to be
had here. It not that there's no growth, it's that there's growth in
the same community elsewhere. This is just a freakin' bulletin board,
for crying out loud! It's no Twitter or Seesmic!

I think this community IS fun. This community is more than just this
list, Robert. Duh! This community is comprised of PEOPLE. Real live
people, who want to know and think and grow and do and ask help and
and learn. That's what everyone here is doing.

Merry Christmas.

Little bekahvoice piping in to add her two-cents. I only ever really
post here in moments such as these.

These interesting discussions (I use annoying airquotes because not
all of them actually ARE interesting...not to me, anyway)that devolve
into defensive weirdness and name-calling and mudslinging and
text-just-sometimes-doesn't-work-misunderstandings and personal
bitchsessions do not bother me. They aren't as entertaining to me as
they used to be because I'm trying SO incredibly hard to decrease the
snark in my life (my own snark that is. I'm trying to get more sincere
as I age so I don't end up crabby and bitter and more wrinkly).
However, these out-of-control threads serve to remind me that everyone
on this list is human. Human beings saddled with all the faults and
foibles that go with not being a chimp. Go to the zoo and check it
out. Chimps fling poo. Humans vent on internet message boards.

That's why you'll never see (hear/read) me saying take it offlist or
go blog it or this has nothing to do with videoblogging. Sure, it
has something to do with videoblogging. Not the way *I* videoblog,
because in this case I couldn't give a shit about getting 250K viewers
fast. If I did, I'd have gone topless long ago. But it matters to some
videobloggers whose motives differ from mine. Doesn't make my
motivations any purer or better or more sincere. It just is. The fact
that the 250KMahalo thread turned into something wholly else only says
one thing to me: people care about videoblogging (or their Video
Product) so much that they are willing to make total asses of
themselves in front of a great deal of people. They are willing to
jump clear over the generally accepted social fences that hem them in
and go. To. Town.

To this I say go for it, kids!. Human beings, remember? That's what
we do. We get mad and defensive. Then we take it to the keyboard.

That being said, let's revisit my prior point about motivations and
all that. I'm not in this because I want to make a career out of it. I
could mudsling and name-call 'till I'm blue and I'd have literally
nothing to lose. Someone on this thread mentioned that all this
silliness was sort of neat and New Media Cool: you won't see Rupert
Murdoch having open discussions like this in a public forum (or
non-forum, in our case). Well guess what? That's because it's wildly
fucking unprofessional! See, I get to swear like that because I have
nothing to lose! I'm NOT a professional! Get it?

If y'all want to be the kings of New Media (or even the jesters) and
usher in a New Age y'all should reflect a little on your behaviour. I
mean, is this really how people want to conduct themselves at the dawn
of The Big Paradigm Shift? Jesus, I hope not.

Transparency is nice, and all, but there's something to be said for
rising above it all and being coolly courteous.

Don't fling poo like chimps.

Or do (do that doo-doo that you do so well). Create a spectacle. Make
scandal. It's your name on the line, not mine. Knock yourself out.

2007-09-15 Thread missbhavens1969
God, is this ever disturbing. And dumb.

I get that your company wouldn't want its confidential information
spread around the internet; that makes perfect sense. I work in a
hospital. Pretty much all patient information is on computer, and
it's against the law (and morally inept) to share it, but my company
is too slow and sprawling and stupid to even think of removing email
applications from the very computers that store that information,
much less putting a 'no blogging' clause in our policy. I'm on one of
those computers right now.

I'd get it if your contract had a 'no blogging about work' policy. In
my heart of hearts I'd know that it was simply for liability purposes
so they could cover their butts if some of their info got loose. But
even then, it seems like such a sad and desperate idea. No blogging?
Isn't this some sort of information systems company? How is it that
they don't know how anonymous the internet can really be? If you
wanted to you could be b/vlogging about all sorts of work-related
things and they'd never, ever be able to find you. Now, if you did it
FROM work, perhaps...but from your own home? It seems desperate
somehow. And Josh has made such an important point: why blogging?
What if it were something else? Under your contract could you not be
a freelance writer (I use writing because their policy doesn't seem
to take video into account) for a magazine or newspaper? What about a
neighborhood gazette? Pennysaver? What if you independently
published the journal you'd been writing in a green Trapper Keeper?
Would that be okay?

I'm just sick at the idea that you'd be forced to stop posting videos
because of something this dumb. I totally understand if you do stop,
but yeesh. What's the world coming to? I guess I'm a little naive,
but I find it quite shocking. You don't even vlog about work!

Also, it scares me some. I DO vlog at or about work occasionally.
There's the odd video and then there's a seperate blog that's only
about hardcore hospital stuff. It's got several unpublished entries
lined up because I iz skared. The only related clause in my contract
states that I cannot talk to the media about any hospital-related
anythings. It doesn't define 'media' and is worded such that you walk
away from it with the impression that they mean when Channel 7 jumps
out from behind the bushes with a microphone to ask you about a
scandal, don't say anything!. Still, I worry. I'd love to know how
many people on this list work for companies with policies like this.
Is this common?

Whatever you choose to do, you've got my support. That being said, I
vote that you take it underground. Run off with Heath's idea, change
your name to Ethel Pettibone, do whatever you need to do. Just make
sure you let us know where to find your work!

When I started videoblogging I was using a Canon Optura 60 mini dv
camera that I loved. Took terrific video, but it was too big and bulky
to use for anything other than major events. It was great for parades
but there was no way I could whip it out at work. For ease of use the
Sanyo Xacti gets my vote. I have an older C6 version, but the new ones
have bigger brighter screens, are better in low light, seem more
rugged and take better video. They aren't exactly cheap, but they get
the job done and I think are well worth the cost. Plus they're
downright teeny and can go everywhere with you.

There are lots of Xacti users on this list, if you search through the
message archives here you'll find lots of discussion threads about them.

Happy shopping,

[videoblogging] Re: Loren says this group should be ashamed

oh, this is just beyond retarded. This whole shebang. From soup to nuts.

Sure, I watched the original video in question. I even watched some
prior posts to figure out if there was some kind of supporting
context. Like every episode I skewer a different group and I'm
totally not funny about it. I didn't really see evidence of that, so
I simply directed myself to the comments section and basically called
him an as*hole. He lowered himself, and so did I. For the record, I
think part of the trouble with all of this is that he's interpreting
the word racist as if it only refers to the type of people who put
burning crosses on people's lawns. It doesn't. Clearly this is lost on
Loren.

I don't believe for one second that this was an experiment. For him
to post that racist bulls*it then wait around to see people's
reactions and turn around and say haha! See! You fell into my trap!
is both juvenile and insulting. And he's calling folks who didn't
think it was funny pathetic?

He's bitching about no one emailing him? He's so proud he started the
conversation and is pissy about no one emailing him? Or making a
response video? I briefly considered making one, then I realized that
making a video where I say hi, Loren, remember me? I called you an
as*hole? I STILL think your an ass*hole is totally without value. It
does nothing for me, and he couldn't care less. Why should I bother?

He can whine all he wants about no one else having balls but him. The
balls to do WHAT, exactly? Post drivel? He can bitch about everyone on
this list being all talk, but does he have any real suggestions? No.
What the hell is he talking about, anyway? This was no sincere
apology. If it was, it wouldn't be stuck in the middle of a rant about
f-ing Facebook widgets (did a Facebook widget drown his pet kitten? He
has a lot of rage about widgets).

The only thing more vile than this whole Black Tech Blogger Internet
Opera bulls*it were all the as*kissing comments that accompanied it
praising him for his passion and for being oh-so-edgy. People think
the guy's being revolutionary. They like this ass and seem to believe
he's got important stuff to say. Well, they can have him. Maybe
Facebook widgets drowned their kittens, too.

I wash my hands of it. Loren said so himself and I agree: he's nothing
more than an idiot comedian.

 Not having any balls
People trying to get podtech to censor him.

Now personally I have a trackrecord of talking about groupthink here,
and sometimes going against the grain. I therefore share some of his
concerns about this stuff, but I am rather unsure of the specifics of
what he was trying to prove, Im not sure Ive learnt anything new so I
resent his suggestion that he has proved something to the gullible herd.

He talks of the potential of what social media could really be used
for, but doesnt go into any detail, so I am left guessing as to
whether he means the same sorts of things I feel are possible, and
 often complain arent really happening.

Persoanally I freely admit to having no balls, and of being mostly all
talk, and rarely making videos, so those complaints dont bother me,
but are probably unfair to a lot of other people here.

And I think this whole thing was a pretty crappy example of
groupthink. Not everybody here has expressed the same opinion by a
long shot, and I think there have been much better examples of
groupthink in the past. The best examples of groupthink Ive seen are
when everyone jumps on a bandwagon and starts attacking something
without learning the facts first, its happened here to one degree or
another in the past. But the thing with Feldmans video was that
watching the video was about the only fact available. I take his point
that maybe some people could of thought to ask him, if they wanted to
form their own independent conclusions, but with something like this
does someone really need to do anything other than watch the video to
 form an opinion?

I would guess that not everybody here wants podtech to censor him, I
certainly dont, and therefore I dont think its a great example of
groupthink at all. Especially as numerous people have made lengthy
posts where they ponder his motives, whether he was using it to make
some other point, so how can he claim that everybody fell for it? Just
because the group may seem to Feldman to be one large mash of people
with a collective stupid brain, doesnt make it so, if he is too lazy
to look at the subtle differences in peoples opinions then pah. Its
the same phenomenon as racism really isnt it, lumping everyone
together under one label in the mind?

CALL-IN shows!!! Not like these guys that sit at a table with papers

cameras and earpieces in their ears with producers telling them what
to do and say! :D Max Kellerman should have been in MSM way before he
actually was, because he was demonstrating passion, ability, knowledge
and talent on public access that outdid the MSM sportscasters that
were talking about the same fights at the same time AND he was
giving his opinions on the fly to people that would call in randomly.

The same thing's happening here with Amanda and Ask A Ninja and
WallStrip and Hayden's new projects. People are demonstrating ability

Now this is changing because of PVR's and tv on demand/iptv set-top

But that doesnt mean that the internet will be as friendly or

[videoblogging] Re: Are You People Alive?

2007-08-03 Thread missbhavens1969
Sorry, but this is so lame.

Spirit of the law? There's no spirit in this law. This is just yet
another restriction in a long list that threaten to choke the life out
of this once-fair city of ours. If it's not one thing, it's another. I
put this more in the same category as the new idiotic noise control
laws (how the hell am I supposed to know when to run into the street
to get an ice cream without the dulcet tones of Mr. Softee??) and old
cabaret laws and no-booze-before-noon-on-Sunday type laws than an
actual administrative concern for terrorism. They're using people's
fear to push crap like this law. Anyone who truly believes that we'll
be safer because people can't film in groups in public is an idiot. As
if a terrorist filming for only 29 minutes is less threatening than
one filming for 31? This law is brought to you by the same folks who
think random backpack searches will keep our subways safer. Please.

As for enforcement? No, of course they can't enforce this to the
fullest, but that's not the point at all. All it takes for a single
completely disastrous event is one hot-blooded cop and one family of
brown tourists who speak no English. Just add a video camera and stir.

Watch it happen.

Bekah

The thing is - I can understand the spirit of the law. I ride the
PATH under the river all the time and I am always cognizant that
terrorists
have already planned to blow it up and would love to do so and living
in and near NYC, you know that it's just part of the deal that many
people hate us and want to kill us. I understand the need for
 vigilance.

The issue is enforcement. Hassling film students next to a film school
*BEFORE* the law even takes effect tells me that this law will NOT be
enforced according to its spirit, but that its enforcement will likely
 be capricious. I'm not hopeful...maybe I'm wrong. We'll see.

Yeah, I haven't had a tv in (I think) a little over a year. Took up
too much space, cable was too expensive, Buffy was pulled out of
reruns and I discovered that I watched way more videoblogs than tv.
Out it went. I'm a total Netflix junkie, though.

I do, however, miss something to veg out to when I'm home sick. TV is
perfect for that. Luckily I don't get sick all that often. And
although I'm not a huge sportsnik, I do miss live Mets games.

I'd love to say that having no TV has caused me to read more, but all
it's really done is change where I get my visual media fix.

Dave,
I'm not certain what the difference is, either. I do know that I was
confused as hell buying my c6 because I was shopping on ebay (I'm
cheap, and I'm trusting) and there were different model numbers
assigned for what seemed to be the exact same camera but made for
different markets (For home vs. US export vs. Eurpoean export). I
don't know if that's also the case here.

All the technical info I got on the Xactis (including comparision
videos, stills etc) came from Steve's Digicams as well as the user
forums over there. Honestly, it doesn't get more thorough.

Here's a forum post from a guy who has both the C6 and the CG65:

http://urltea.com/xqv

And here's Steve's review of the C6:

http://urltea.com/xqy

Unfortunately here doesn't have a review of the E1 but he does have
reviews for the HD models.

Hey David, ignore that last message. I think the solution is this:

The CG6 is a smaller version of the C6 model I have but with a bigger
screen AAC audio and can hold a bigger SD card. The reduction in slim
height is traded for and increase in chubbiness, which would probably
make it easier to hold.

http://urltea.com/xqz

The CG65 has all of the above improvements plus records in H.264

http://urltea.com/xr0

The E1 seems to be a waterproof (for up to an hour) CG65.

I vote for the CG65!

[videoblogging] Re: Help: Delete pics off Xacti from Mac?

2007-07-09 Thread missbhavens1969
Hmmm...I don't have this problem.

When I connect the camera via USB and choose card reader from the
menu on the camera itself it opens iPhoto automatically and tell me I
have X-number of items to import (it also shows up as a volume on my
desktop, but I ignore it). There's a checkbox that asks if I want to
delete items from camera, I always leave this checked, and then when I
click import it double-checks. Do I REALLY want to delete all items
from the camera? Yes, yes I do. And it does. Poof.

However, this creates a different problem. There's a copy of the
videos in the iphoto library, which is fine, but then have to import
them into iMovie (also fine, doesn't take long) but that means I have
two copies taking up space on my hard drive. Then even when I edit the
clips the bits I delete are hanging around the iMovie trashcan
taking up more space. There's probably a fourth copy hanging around
someplace, too, just for kicks.

I manually delete raw footage I don't want to keep from iMovie and I
also have to delete clip-bits in iMovie that I don't use, as well as
empty my iMovie trash. Since I'm not the kind of videoperson who takes
oodles of raw footage and keeps it for an-as-yet-to-be-revealed
purpose, this works. I only back up completed imovie projects as well
as their little compressed Quicktime friends (and the rare what will
I do with that? footage.) and then leave the original clips in
iPhoto. This wouldn't work for people whose head would explode if they
had to sift through their iPhoto library to search for clips.

But I guess, this isn't all that helpful if you aren't using
imovie...hmmm...

Hey David,
I use an Xacti C6 and every video I have past May '06 was shot with it
in 640x480. I bought it in the interest of stealth. Even though I
loved my mini DV camera, It was impossible to just whip out at a
moment's notice. It has been collecting dust ever since. I have guilt
about that.

I avoid low light situations entirely because it just comes out lousy.
My only real beef with it is that the internal mic picks up sound off
the motor (is it a motor? I don't know. Something moving inside the
thing that clicks and whirs). It drove me bats for awhile, but now
it's something I've just accepted as the trade for such a teeny
camera. Another thing I've accepted is that because of the placement
of the mic, when I'm pointing the camera at something other than
myself and I'm speaking, I have to either adjust my voice (something I
rarely remember to do) or fix the audio later because it's
considerably louder than my subject (assuming that my subject has the
gift of speech. This has not been a problem with plants). Also, taking
stills can be a bit of a pain (life's not all video, you know!)
because the darn thing's so small that it's hard not to move the
camera while pressing the button. Or I just have unnaturally strong
thumbs.

It fits in my jeans pocket on days off and it fits in my shirt pocket
at work. That's all I could ask for.

I would very much like a newfangled waterproof one, but can't justify
the purchase.

I would certainly buy another Xacti without reservation. I've been
happy with it.

Well, I was under the impression that musicians/bands covering a tune
for a recording would certainly need permission on the assumption that
money would be made from the sale of the album.

But every band in every live concert I've ever seen has done at least
one cover (always my favorite part of a show...you can't judge a book by
it's cover but you CAN judge a band by it's covers) and I can't imagine
they sought permission first.

Oh well. There must be some sort of if you're already famous you can do
a cover of my famous song clause.

In the meanwhile, I'm going to brush up on my piano skills. I've always

[videoblogging] Sudden Blogger Commenting Glitch

2007-05-06 Thread missbhavens1969
At first I thought that no one liked my most recent videos and
therefore did not comment on them...but then I thought wow...not even
my Mom commented!.

Turns out the comment feature has suddenly up and left my posts. I
have no idea why (although it's certainly possible that no one wants
to comment on my
deer-skeleton-picked-clean-by-a-bear-by-the-side-of-a-river video, it
seems odd that NO ONE has a comment for my
floor-to-ceiling-Spiderman-decorated-bathroom video).

All the right settings are checked, I haven't messed with anything,
but the little 0 Comments link to click on to MAKE a comment has
disappeared! It's still in place on previous posts, all old comments
are there, but there's no way to make new ones with my latest posts.

Am I missing something glaringly obvious?

Anyone else have this problem?

Still in transition to WP (but really: I haven't messed with any of my
Blogger setting or template I swear! Is blogger punishing me for
leaving?),

Oh, Gena, if you got the chance to do this it would be beyond helpful.
I don't have any trouble flying to, staying in and traveling around a
city I've never been before all by my lonesome, but LA is the ONE US
city where it'll be made more complicated by the fact that I do not
know how to drive (yeah, yeah. I've heard it all before. Lessons begin
in June.) If it weren't for taxis I'd never get anyplace. If I pick
the wrong hotel I could end up $50 from anywhere I want to be.

I would be willing to go in for a rental with someone who doesn't mind

It will work fine. It has a component video out and standard RCA

 your projector.

I got my brother in law kitted up with a Windows Media Center this
weekend - he only has a projector, no TV, and it was super easy.
Ran
a component video signal out from his standard Nvidia graphics
card
to his projector and audio to his surround sound box - badabing.
Same for the Apple TV - it will have all the outputs you need.

Windows Media Center looks great so far, and (I've said it before)
seems a better bet to me than Apple TV. He can put his cable TV
through it, record on it, as well as do all the photo, music and
video management, and play DVDs. Easy to set up to pick up
videoblogs and podcasts through Newsgator in the Online Spotlight
 part of Media Center.

He has music imported into both iTunes and Windows Media so that
he
can see which he likes best. He uses the Windows Media remote,
and
we are going to try to do what Steve Watkins was talking about -
get
a Wii remote working as a point-and-click wand for his projector
screen. Which would be very cool.

solution... And
this actually turned out to work perfectly.
Its a simple free open source fan control!

  http://lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html

Now my macbook pro, even when charging battery (thats when it
usually got
the hottest) stays cool with my fan control settings.
The default fan config on the macbook pro is very low and you
cant change
it. So this is an awesome solution which took minutes.

Heath, does your video camera take stills? I just do what Schlomo
said: string a whole mess of stills together. And I mean a
whhhole mess of them. This was a lot easier to do before
there was a cat in the house...she gets off on disturbing objects on
tables.

Takes forever. But the end result is so fun!

I'm psyched about the software suggestions. It never occured to me
there was software for it. I'm duncey that way.

Can't wait to see what you come up with (will it involve action

[videoblogging] Leaving Blogger permanently for WP . Need advice. Ecto users?

2007-02-02 Thread missbhavens1969
Sick of all this headache. Willing to pay cash money for a modicum of
stability and heaping platters of sanity. I've been wrangling with
this crap too long.

Of course, I should have made this decision before two days ago
BEFORE I switched to New Blogger because there apparantly isn't
currently a mechanism in place to export everything from NB to WP
anymore. Super!

New trouble is, I used to manage posts with ecto, but now that I've
made the switch, only 25 posts are archived instead of all 125.
Super!

(oh, and they're in completely the wrong order and there are scores
of posts missing, but that's another story)

Before I do anything drastic I want to at least find a way to save
my 125 old posts. Any suggestions? Any recent Blogger departees care

I just noticied this today so maybe this problem cropped up while I

being zapped from my feedburner feed. Did my site feed change with
migrating to New Blogger? I checked iTunes too and those posts are
old-old-old. So I know the feedburner feed is working, but it's
totally out of date. It is only showing chronologically backwards from
the posts I have not yet labeled using Blogger. I had to republish
each post with the new labels...what on Earth did it do? I am so
peeved. Should I re-sych the feed? For some reason that scares
me...probably because Feedburner associates the word nuclear with
it. And I was poking around in Bloglines and see that I have

[videoblogging] Feedburner/New Blogger Woes! Woe is Me!

2007-01-31 Thread missbhavens1969
And the hits just keep on coming! I am much vexed.

So after a chat with Bill C. that solidified my desire to move to
Wordpress I set about deleting all those damn Blogger labels...guess what!

Without the labels, the posts reappear in the Feedburner feed!
HOWEVER, they are completely out of order! There is now the de-labeled
posts (chronologically incorrect), followed by a whole lot of no posts
(because they still have the labels on them) followed by all the older
never-labeled posts. This would be fine except that now the whole FB
feed is completely out of order! Time as defined by humans is not a
factor with this feed, now. Dates have become totally irrelevant to
it. I am baffled and annoyed.

I guess I should just be grateful that I can put the posts back into
the feed at all...

No, not so much

Anyone one else out there using their old classic Blogger template
on new Blogger having feed issues? Is it really just me?

[videoblogging] New Blogger Labels: code for an old template?

2007-01-30 Thread missbhavens1969
HELP I have tried everything. I have visited help forums, I have
combed the Blogger Help section, I have poured over OPTs (other
people's templates) and for the life of me I cannot do it! I cannot
add a labels section into my sidebar. I can labels the posts, sure, I
spent the better part of the afternoon doing that, and if you click
the labels then you get a nifty list of posts with the same label, but
I want to have an actual list of labels so that finding posts will be
easier. I found all sorts of cool code that will arrange your label
list into drop-down menus and clouds and what have you, but noplace
can I find out how to get the darn labels into the template in the
first place.

I'm rather fond of my template, I don't want to change to a Blogger
one no matter how customizable they now are. I was planning on
redesigning the site soon, anyway, but not this soon.

Perhaps it isn't possible?

There is a way to cram del.icio.us tags into a cloud on my sidebar,
but I don't really care for it--I'll do it as a last resort.

Anyone have any ideas? Anyone? Please?

No politicians here. My big plans include a geneology project. I've
inherited the jackpot of old family photos (as far back as 1900) from
one side of the family and now I'm angling for some photo evidence
from the other other side. My family is as least as dysfunctional and
distant and screwy(and funny and entertaining) as the next, and it's
also pretty big. My moms is only one of two but my Dad is the oldest
of 12(!) and I barely know any of them or their kids or grandkids or
great-grandkids. I figured interviews would be a cool excuse to track
them down and get the goods.

Getting to know (and document the heck out of) my family is my big

But in reality, it's just a dog video. It's not even a really good dog
video. Yes, its propaganda, and I'm sure every president in office
from now on will make certain their pet has an official .gov page
(whether they are republican, democrats or otherwise)because quite
honestly its cute and people like cute, in crappy times people need as
much cute as they can get. Yes, this video is distracting from the big
stuff: that's why it was made. Bigger more important things that dog
videos will always be going on in the world that should demand the
attention of government...but it's not like the 2 minutes of the white
house staff's time detracted from attempting to achieve World Peace,
or anything (particularly considering our latest methods and lack of
results). A little gross? Perhaps.

But it's not like folks who don't agree with the government can't
appreciate a little dog video.

(although it was really, way too long and the gift-hiding joke got

**bull$hit!!!***

I cry **bull$hit!!**

Moderators? For what? To tell y'all to can it? How about taking it
offlist someplace? There's a whole internet world out there where you
can fling poop at each other 24/7! Personally, I'm finding this
thread interesting as hell (not entertaining, exactly, because none of
it is funny; but definitely interesting) but I'm astonished at how
wildly unprofessional you are both being. Is this how you two
communicated when you used to work together? Jesus--no wonder things
didn't work out.

But if you want to stop having to defend yourself, stop reading!
(alternately, Andrew can stop writing stuff for you to read and get
defensive about, but clearly he's not going to do that anytime soon,
and that's his right).

Either way, moderator-shmoderator. This is a forum about
videoblogging, which both of you do, so have at it.

[videoblogging] The One That Pushed Me Over The Edge (was The Shallow Nature of Videoblogging)

2006-06-04 Thread missbhavens1969

Ahhh, yes. That was it. That was the one. I knew it would happen sooner or later. The
message thread that might finally shove me clear over the edge as far as this board is
concerned.

I used to consult the board a lot. There's lots of handy info and tons of cool people who
want to help out. Sometimes there's some neat heated debates going on, but too
frequently there are just bitchy, snappish back-and-forths, wild oh, but it's so hard to
interpret what you really meant in print! Oooh, isn't text just so ineffective?!-type
misunderstandings, snippity-do-da's and one-line zingers that clutter up this space and
make it feel like a high school..no, wait: a Junior High School cafeteria. Wait: An All-Girls
Junior High School Cafeteria (yeah, and that's not sexist. If anyone here has spend any
time around 8th grade girls you know what I'm talking about here). I go away for the
weekend and come home to quicky scroll through the messages and find this half-baked,
faux-profound, vlogger-baiting bullshit? An I'm so shallow, you're so shallow, too
thread? Why would anyone want to participate in that? That didn't feel like an invitation to
a conversation about the meaning of meaning, and the subsequent posts sure didn't
read like productive conversation and I'm damn surprised so many people joined in the
non-fun. ...making salad ? ...takes a meaningless swing. ? ...casey only stepped in to
make a point that casey exists ? I feel like we've got this message group chock full of
people who have are hell-bent on communication via videoblogging or otherwise and yet I
look at this board and I'm astonished at the consistent lack of communication!

I don't feel the need to defend my apparent lack of depth to someone who asks her
questions in some bizarre haiku-ish format just because she saw a video that made her go
oooh and she realized that so many other videos don't make her go ooh, and
I'm not posting this message to prove I exist. What are you getting at? I post therefore I
am? Take that desperatly-wishing-to-be-existential, cranky, vague, meaningless thread
about meaning and cram it.

You know what? Kiss my vlog-ass. Ponder that.

I've hit my message-board wall.

And, no...I won't likely vlog about it. It would probably end up shallow since all we're really
doing is attaching meaning to meaningless things in order to get what we want from
others.

[videoblogging] Re: Do you remember your first time...

2006-05-21 Thread missbhavens1969

It's funny...I take my camera absolutely everywhere in hopes of catching a moment, or
meeting someone I simply *must* get on camera, and in then end, I rarely shoot
videoblogs in public. And when I do, they are all at major events (Halloween,
Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mardi Gras) where whipping out a camera isn''t given a second
thought. In New York, where pretty much everyone is a little bit wary, I'm more intimidated
about filming. Here in New Orleans, though, the whole vibe is a little bit more out there
and people are far more open to talking to you out of the blue. But I'm trying hard NOT to
look like a tourist, so, yet again, my camera spends too much time in my purse.

Turns out I'm awfully shy. I can film myself in all sorts of circumstances, but I can't seem
to make the leap to public vlogging even though it was my original intent for my videoblog
in the first place.

This will change eventually--I'm already a little bit tired of filming myself. I spend a
considerable amount of time alone anyway--I took up videoblogging partly to get myself
out of the house, see new things and look at my world a different way. I wanted to play
tourist in my own town (NYC, where I don't feel one bit like a tourist and don't care about
looking like one if I whip out a camera). But one look at my archive tells me that I haven't
changed at all. I've simply *documented* my spending time by myself.

Still learning,
Bekah

ps: the first time I took the camera to the streets that wasn't a calendar holiday was to film
the sad dead Christmas trees that lined the streets of the city at the end of January. The
simple act of my walking up the block filming the trees brrought several building
superintendents tto lean out their windows and shoo me away. They thought I was trying
to catch them in a sanitation violation of some kind. Wary New Yorkers...like I said. Stuff
like that discourages me.

2006-05-10 Thread missbhavens1969

Double ditto on that one. Text can get tricky...emails and message lists are the quickest
route to misunderstanding, reactionary freak-outs and hurt feelings.

Paul, walk away from the keyboard and settle in with a cup of cocoa and don't let yourself
get all destroyed. You are WELL aware of the texty-trickyness of this videoblogging
group. I think this thread has finally run it's course. If, after the cocoa you still dread
coming, cash in your ticket and send me the money so that I can go, because I know in my
heart of hearts that even the most argumentative members in this group are still pretty
darn nice.

This thread had so many interesting diverging points of view. Too bad it descended into
madness and high-drama. AGAIN.

Arguments can be fun and productive. Drama is for junior high school girls.

Crap. That was sexist. But you know what? I'm leaving it there.

As I recall, there was some confusion about the ficticiousness (is that a word) of CW early
on because they mentioned that we are not actors.

My point was not that Kevin would have hesitated
to do this because of a sense of community or sense of belonging
(though given what Jen has said about how her students don't perceive
their audience, perhaps he would have). My point is that he didn't
have some lesson to learn by posting it, unless he has never ever been
in an online community before-- these stupid hoaxes crop up
frequently, in one place or another.

But this guy didn't approach this as a hoax to fool ANY community. I didn't see any
PayPal button for donations in his memory. It was an assigment. I don't think there is any
reason hor him to feel defensive or to feel that he should join this list and explain himself
in any way.

Here's what Kevin has going for him in terms of this community:
 1) He doesn't seem to have set out to deceive anyone except the
hapless visitors to his vlog. He didn't promo the video here or hype
 his death movie.
 2) Jen posted QUICKLY to dispel the idea of his death, so the
speculation did not get out of hand.
 3) We've all been young and foolish. Or old and foolish. In any case,
should he decide to join this community, I doubt he's going to get
cold-shouldered just because of this particular stunt (see item #1 for
 the main reason why).
 4) His production values of his work are decent, and we can all
 appreciate well-edited videos.
 5) A sizeable handful of people respect him more for this stupid prank
because they think of it as art, than they would have if he'd just
posted a video showing his real life.

There is an assumed contract between the blogger and the audience
that what's there is in some way or another real. This is especially
true in video, which is easy to manipulate but seems so real.

Contract? What assumed contract? There is no contract. There is no contract whether it is
video, text or photos. This is the internet. There can be no assumptions. I WISH there was
an assumed contract between a blogger and their audience. I like to *think* that I have
created such a space where what little audience I have feels that what I present is honest
and real, but there's no way as an audience member that *I* assume that the blogger/
vlogger I'm viewing has done the same. I don't think this makes me someone who lacks
trust, I think this makes me a conscientous consumer. I take what I see at face value and if
it ellicits an emotional response--then that's what it does. I rather hope that it does.

When a blog is fiction, it's best to identify it as such.

I agree with you, there.

More importantly is when a blog blurs the line between fiction and
non-fiction. For instance, when Kevin uses his real name but vlogs his
fake death. That's not right, somehow.

I pretty much agree with you there, too. Somehow, the idea creeps me out.

You are fascinated by the reactions because you were not manipulated.
Kevin is your student and you know he's okay.

Ahhh...but I'm fascinated by the reactions, too and I wasn't manipulated, AND I don't know
this kid and I wasn't entirely sure he was okay.

...
Hopefully nobody had the opportunity to lose sleep over this.

I might, just because it was all sort of creepy. Not because my emotions were manipulated
or I was deeply worried about whether it was all real or not

...
But one might ask: has Kevin never been in an online community before? Does he
not know about this kind of BS and how little it's appreciated or
tolerated on the net? And are we seriously still exploring this as
if it were somehow new? This isn't new--

Look, I don't think a sense of community would stop someone from posting the kind of
material that this guy posted. In fact, if it had instead been someone from this list,
someone we all knew who posted this, and called it an experiment or called it--look
out!-- art there would be a lot less outcry about it. It may have even gotten heaped with
praise and called innovative. This wasn't BS: this was an assignment.

Bekah
(of course, all my videos and text posts are nothing but true and reflect my honest and
very real feelings about absolutely everything...I want to make sure that's perfectly clear.
Trust me.)

[videoblogging] Re: another FAQ from a newbie

2006-04-13 Thread missbhavens1969
I'll throw in my 2cents re: miniDV loading placement: muy importante! I have
the Canon
Optura 60, which I do really like (not 3ccd, tho), although my big beefs with
it is that
there's no Easy mode (all those features are overkill for me) and it's size.
Don't get me
wrong, it's pretty darn small, but it's not like I can toss it in my purse and
take it around
town. I've spent my non-existent tax return on a sexy, teensy camera I can pop
in my
pocket for on-the-fly videoblogging--something I absolutely can't get
accomplished with
the Optura.

Unless you've got a lot of other things in your life that you can use a decent
videocamera
for in the event that you get too frustrated with vlogging (kids parties?
Dance recitals?
Weddings? vacations?) I'd stick to a nice digital camera that takes video. I've
only had the
new camera for three days and I'm still messing with it, but there are other
vloggers out
there who use it (or some version of it) and like it. Sanyo Xacti c6--very good
price on
ebay and seriously: sexy as all get out.

Well I'll make the disclaimer up front: It depends on your budget but
 ...

If you want to go with a real video camera (instead of a digital still
camera that also takes videos), you'll get better quality video (and likely
 sound).

If you can afford a 3CCD camera, they are usually somewhat better in low
light, but even 1ccd cameras are leaps and bounds over digital stills.

Try and find a model that you can easily plug a mic into if you so choose.
In my opinion, you should try and pick a model that doesnt require a base
station to connect to your computer but rather has a Firewire port on the
camera itself. (although if your model saves to an SD card this may not
 really even be an issue)
If your looking at a model that uses miniDV tape, take note where the tape
goes in ... some models are designed such that if the camera is mounted on a
tripod you cant get to the tape door anymore.

A recent thread showed that a number of people in this group are happy with
the Panasonic PV-GS150. I have that one and have been quite happy with it
 ...

Also consider how often you'll be taking it out and about with you and how
you'll shoot things, some interesting form factors out there now.
