Hello,
I recently joined this Vintage VW List and would appreciate feedback on a
question.
3 months ago I bought a 1974 standard bug in very good condition, with a
1776 cc
engine that had only 6,500 miles on it. See basic specs below:
I asked the seller, a commercial aircraft mechanic by trade,
What kind of distributor does it have on it? Does it have a vacuum chamber
or not? If it doesn't, those need to be set so they are 28 to 32 degrees
BTDC at 3000 to 3500 rpm. The BEST dizzy I've found is the SVDA which you
set much like a centrifugal distributor (that has no vacuum chamber)
Thanks for your wise response. See attached engine photo showing my
non-vacuum advance
distributor, with Compu-fire electronic unit inside. The engine runs well,
but low rpm off the line
performance seems similar to the stock 1500 '67 bug I had 30 years ago. But
I realize that a
2-barrel
Greetings listees,
I haven't sent you an update for a bit. Been busy with life, prepping
for winter, and a move back to Vancouver to go back to school to
become a Railway conductor(So I can actually make money, finish a few
cars etc). Anyways i'm in a peculiar situation of I bought a engine
case
I kinda left you guys hanging at the last time I updated with you. Not
a lot has happened. Other then I have had a lot of bad luck and not a
lot of forward momentum. However it will happen eventually. In the
meantime I got some beauty shots for you.
Note that in these pics it has the wrong
Wow, that is nice. I am just as impressed with the garage, looks spotless.

Kirin, contact Darren Krewenchuk (sp?) for the headwork. He did my 044 heads
and they were works of art. About 600 bucks a long time ago. Are the 94's A
or B stroke pistons?? That makes a difference as to what crank you can use.
I would go with a nice 1914CC engine, which is 69x94, but you need
Actually thats just a storage garage. My actual workshop looks a bit
more like this. However I added more lighting, and more shelves and
got rid of that window in the background

Hey Courtney,
I haven't heard about A or B stroke pistons, Care to explain a bit? I
remember some of the issues about the super cases, Such as casting
issues, sand in the oil galleys. I have a post first 1000 case. Which
apparently after all the issues are sorted. I know not everybody is a
fan of
Kirin, Type A pistons are non-stroker and you can use them up to about a 74
mm stroke I believe. They have the piston pin bosses closer to the skirt of
the piston. The B's have the piston pin bosses closer to the top of the
piston so that you don't have the pistons coming out the top of the

out photos. You can email it to me privately at silentATbeatricene.com
where the AT is the ampersand found on the shifted #2 key.
If you have a non-vacuum advance, then I suggest you get a degreed pulley (I
assume you
94B pistons X 76 = 1955 a gentlemans engine with 100 cam. dual kadrons(find
old set and have them rebushed) use mercedes ends on linkage or go with scat
linkage.

this distributor has wrong vacuum signal for any vw carb smaller than
34pict-3 on a dual port. if you don't specify dual port when saying this is
best distributor then single port guys will remove their 30pict-1,or -2
carbs and have only mechanical as vacuum will not function.

Thanks for the heads-up Bill. It's true that the vaccuum signal needs to
either be from a 34-pict-3 or if you have dual carbs, tie them together to
get a sufficient vac signal. I think in this case, he said he had 1776 so
I'm guessing he runs dual carbs but I should not assume.

I was also going to mention a few more things about your engine that I
noticed. I've learned from Bill May and others over the past 15 years so
some things I noticed on your engine:
That style of fuel pump with the spiggots out the side is the good one.
Don't ever buy the NAPA kind with one
Wow - truly works of art. What would you use those in? They look
uncomfortable.

That does sound reasonable. However if I sent out some heads and had
them worked on and they didn't check for anything as substantial as
cracks I would probably lose it!
