No Cursor Tracking in Zoom IOS 7

2013-12-14 Thread zkrisher
It's been a while since I tried using my bluetooth keyboard but after
getting my new iPad Air and iWork with it, I decided to give it another go.

If I remember correctly in IOS 5 or 6 when typing with zoom on, the
magnified area would track the text cursor.

Now when I start typing the focus jumps to some point on the screen ans
sticks there.

Do I remember correctly that it used to work in the past?
Is anyone else having the same issue in IOS 7?

Thanks,

  Zivan

Touch ID only works for a couple of days

2013-12-14 Thread Robin Christopherson
Dear listers

I heard on a recent iFive podcast someone saying that this was an issue for
them and asking if anyone knew of a solution. It’s the same for me too so I was
wondering if anyone on this list knew if this was likely to be fixed with a
firmware update. I can program in a finger or thumb and it works fine for a day
or so then it doesn’t work – not even a small percentage of the time – it just
never works thereafter until I reprogram and then it works 100% of the time for
a day or so.

Any comments welcomed, Robin.

Re: Touch ID only works for a couple of days

2013-12-14 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I wonder what causes some phones to have this problem and some not; I'm not
having any problem at all. Of course it insists on my passcode if I restart the
phone or after I think forty-eight hours of it not having been used but other
than that it's fine. I wonder if it's something with a particular phone or if
it's a bug triggered in a particular way or if it matters whether you have a
passcode or not or if it's just random.

Spotify Now Has Free iDevice App - with link

2013-12-14 Thread Alan Lemly
I forgot to include the link to the free Spotify app in the Apple iTunes store
in my last message. Here it is:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/spotify/id324684580?mt=

Alan

I got an email this morning from Spotify announcing a free app without needing
the Spotify Premium service. Here's what the email says:

Spotify on your phone just got even better. With our new, completely free app,
you can still listen to all the radio you like. But you can also…

✔

Listen to your playlists on shuffle

✔

Shuffle play any artist's entire catalogue

✔

Find ready-made playlists for every mood and genre

✔

Create your own playlists on the go

✔

Play any song, any time, on tablet

You can also listen for free on tablet too. Play any song, any time.To get
great music on the go, help yourself to the latest Spotify app.

I haven't used the app so don't know anything about its accessibility. If I'm
reading the above correctly, the app also sounds like it does more on a tablet
than on an iPhone.

I know there are Spotify users on this list so I thought I'd pass this on.

Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way To iOS Through Third-Party Apps

Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way To iOS Through Third-Party Apps
Ubergizmo

[image: Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way To iOS Through Third Party Apps]If
there’s one thing about Android is that it is not as restrictive compared
to iOS. This means that users are able to customize their device to their
liking, sometimes without even having to root their phone. For example
customization could be a change in launchers, or keyboards, or even
changing the default camera/browser app. Well the good news is that it
looks like some of that customization could be headed iOS’ way in the form
of Fleksy
keyboardhttp://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/12/fleksy-keyboard-for-android-leaves-beta/.
The app has been available on Android and recently left its beta phase, but
its developers have not stopped there and have released an SDK for iOS
developers.

While Fleksy will not be able to replace all of iOS’ keyboards, developers
now have the option to include the keyboard within their apps. Speaking to The
Vergehttp://www.theverge.com/2013/12/12/5201868/fleksy-wants-to-become-your-new-ios-keyboard-everywhere,
Fleksy’s founder, Ioannis Verdelis, was quoted as saying, *“With every new
version of iOS the work required on our part to build a keyboard SDK has
reduced significantly […] We’re [now] doing stuff on iOS that integrates
the keyboard deeper than it’s ever been integrated.” *As it stands there
are a handful of apps that have already integrated Fleksy into their apps,
such as GV Connect, Blindsquare, Wordbox, and Launch. If you’re wondering
what those apps might be like to use with a keyboard different from the
default iOS one, go ahead and check them out.

RE: Touch ID only works for a couple of days

2013-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Robin and Harry,

I seemed to have the same issue until I listened to the last Today in iOS
Podcast. Here a listener reported how he discovered that his Touch ID would
do the same as you describe, but that in the end he discovered it was user
error. I am not saying it totally is user error because there could be
something wrong with your specific hardware and of course you would just
have to bring the phone to an Apple Store to determine this.

Anyhow, this user said that he set up Touch ID by scanning the tip of his
thumb and that he also moved it around and so on. Like you he said it worked
at first and then it got worse, but he noticed that if he used a part of his
thumb a bit further down and not totally the fingertip that it worked much
much better. I have since deleted all my prints and rescanned my thumb using
2 of the 5 available prints because he also said that if you do it more it
works better which makes sense. Since I have done this and use more the pad
of my thumb half way between my fingertip and the knuckle I have had no
issues and it works very reliably and fast and, what's more, it continues to
work just as well a week later.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: thermostats, talking or run by iPhone, name and model and where?

2013-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Listers,

For those who have seen the below message about the iThermo4All app and
device, here is the iTunes link for the app:

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/ithermo4all/id556502204?mt=8

This sounds OK except that I wonder what the developer means by saying
iThermo4All is a programmable thermostat that allows you to control the
temperature of your thing. I assume they mean house. I don't understand
how somebody who wants to do business internationally doesn't get his
translations checked. They seem to be an Italian company and going to their
website brings up an Italian website and I don't see any way to switch it to
English. Even in the larger context of Europe this means you can only read
about this product if you speak Italian.

This seems also to be a product developed for the blind whereas
www.RadioThermostat.com does not cater to the blind but to everybody. They
just have made their app accessible and while it could use a bit of
improvement it's very useable and in this case I rather use a mainstream
product than something specifically developed for the blind.

Sieghard

Can someone please tell me the names of thermastats that work with an app

Re: Streaming Music Services

2013-12-14 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I compared iTunes Radio and Pandora a bit more this morning. Pandora
also integrates nicely into the lock screen and the control Panel, but
iTunes Radio does give you the like/dislike button on the lock screen
and the Control Panel whereas you have to go to the Pandora app to give
a song the thumbs up or thumbs down. On the downside with iTunes Radio,
you have to double tap on the like/dislike button before you can select
play more like this or never play this track again, whereas Pandora
let's you do this right from the Pandora main screen. therefore, it's
probably a push unless you're in the lock screen and have a passcode set.

I do find the Pandora main screen to be a bit more cluttered, and I do
have to wait for VoiceOver to restart after it gets hung up in the
middle of the Pandora screen. Other than this, they're pretty comparable
from an accessibility stand point.

I haven't really compared the music selections much between the two
services. The Classic Hard Rock genre on iTunes Radio did seem pretty
small to me though, but when I switched to the Classic Rock genre, I was
much more satisfied. Pandora seems to do a better job of playing playing
more songs I like, but maybe that's because I've been using it longer
and it has more data about what I like and don't like. It's also a catch
22 since that also means I hear less new music that I might like, which
maybe is why I've been using iTunes Readio a bit more lately.

LKike I said below, they're both free and accessible, so give them both
a download and a try before deciding if you want to upgrade.

On 12/13/2013 02:10 PM, Christopher Chaltain wrote:

I use iTunes Radio and Pandora. I like Pandora because I can also access
it on my systems running Ubuntu, and even though they're both accessible
on the iPhone, I find that iTunes Radio has a cleaner and easier to use
interface. Plus it's integrated nicely into the lock screen and the
Control Panel. They're both free, so it would be easy to try them out
and then upgrade to a paid option to get things like fewer commercials,
higher quality and cloud storage.

Bard and WebBraille have merged, so you get Braille books on Bard as well. I

Re: Pandora without Table Index Now

2013-12-14 Thread Tom Lange

Hi Jeffrey,
I updated Pandora right around the time that I updated to IOS 7, a couple of
months ago or so. The table index disappeared then, and, it seems to me,
the station listing is in a grid view and isn't sorted alphabetically.
What's worse, I can't find any setting for the old-style listing. Quite
frankly, it makes locating stations a pain in the butt. Although I really
like Pandora, the interface change is really aggravating.

A word to the wise: Pandora has seen fit to do away with the table index in
its latest release. Too bad, because I relied on this quite a bit with my
99

stations.

I heard on a recent iFive podcast someone saying that this was an issue for

Touch ID only works for a couple of days

2013-12-14 Thread Robin Christopherson
Sieghard et al

Thanks for all the suggestions but believe me I’ve tried reprogramming my
digits with and without sighted assistance and at various parts of my thumb.
What I haven’t done as yet, which I think you were suggesting in your msg, was
to assign the same finger to more than one slot. I now have the same thumb on
three slots (the other two are for the kids) and I’ll keep you posted. It works
fine now of course – but that’s always the case.

Thanks, Robin.

Put in thumb and 2 fingers almost 5 days ago, still working fine no matter

working. Now watch, next time it will stop! (smiley) Oh, have you tried turning

That is probably because you are using the free version.
I suspect if you wrote the developer, that would likely be the answer if your

That is only a guess.

First, you have to be sure you are running version 2.93 of VoiceDream.
Then, go to settings, double-tap on Manage My Voices, then double-tap
 where
 it says Add Voices.
The default list is All voices.
James, on my device, is on the screen with rows 11 to 18, and is between
 Heather and Will.
If anyone still can't find it, either they are not running version 2.93 or
they perhaps need to get sighted help.
Note that the place where it says, Add Voices, does not say it is a
 button,
 but it is.

error. I am not saying it totally is user error because there could be
something wrong with your specific hardware and of course you would just have
to bring the phone to an Apple Store to determine this.

Since I have done this and use more the pad
of my thumb half way between my fingertip and the knuckle I have had no
issues and it works very reliably and fast and, what’s more, it continues to
work just as well a week later.

I compared iTunes Radio and Pandora a bit more this morning. Pandora also
integrates nicely into the lock screen and the control Panel, but iTunes
Radio does give you the like/dislike button on the lock screen and the
Control Panel whereas you have to go to the Pandora app to give a song the
thumbs up or thumbs down. On the downside with iTunes Radio, you have to
double tap on the like/dislike button before you can select play more like
this or never play this track again, whereas Pandora let's you do this
right from the Pandora main screen. therefore, it's probably a push unless
you're in the lock screen and have a passcode set.

I do find the Pandora main screen to be a bit more cluttered, and I do
have to wait for VoiceOver to restart after it gets hung up in the middle
of the Pandora screen. Other than this, they're pretty comparable from an
accessibility stand point.

I haven't really compared the music selections much between the two
services. The Classic Hard Rock genre on iTunes Radio did seem pretty
small to me though, but when I switched to the Classic Rock genre, I was
much more satisfied. Pandora seems to do a better job of playing playing
more songs I like, but maybe that's because I've been using it longer and
it has more data about what I like and don't like. It's also a catch 22
since that also means I hear less new music that I might like, which maybe
is why I've been using iTunes Readio a bit more lately.

LKike I said below, they're both free and accessible, so give them both a
download and a try before deciding if you want to upgrade.

Pandora is great on IoS. You can use it for free with commercials, or
pay
$3.99 a month with no commercials. Rhapsody is pretty good, but it's
very

limited for free access and only has samples. I have a subscription to
it,

Selecting a different From address when sending an email

2013-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello List,

I have 3 email accounts set up on my iPhone and my business email is set as
my default. I used to be able to double tap on the From field in the
message header when I was composing an email and then if I swiped past the
Subject field I found a picker control where I could swipe up or down to
select one of my other accounts to send from.

I don't think this is working any more and was wondering if others who have
more than one account have noticed this or can confirm this. I will ask one
of my employees who has an iPhone to test this without Voiceover and tell me
how he does it, but I thought I put this out here. If it indeed works
without Voiceover and not with Voiceover I hope some others will join me in
writing to accessibil...@apple.com to make them aware of this and hopefully
it will be fixed down the road.

For now I just have to make sure I am in the account I want to send from
before I tap Compose, but where this doesn't work is if you initiate an
email from elsewhere maybe through a Share option because then it will
always use your default account to send from.

Regards,

Sieghard

I have not had this problem. Using the mail client on it's own I can help you
off list if you like later tonight or tomorrow. The only time I have seen this
problem is if I try to send mail from within some other apps like when I try to
mail a tweet from a twitter client.

I compared iTunes Radio and Pandora a bit more this morning. Pandora
also integrates nicely into the lock screen and the control Panel, but
iTunes Radio does give you the like/dislike button on the lock screen
and the Control Panel whereas you have to go to the Pandora app to
give a song the thumbs up or thumbs down. On the downside with iTunes
Radio, you have to double tap on the like/dislike button before you
can select play more like this or never play this track again, whereas
Pandora let's you do this right from the Pandora main screen.
therefore, it's probably a push unless you're in the lock screen and
have a passcode set.

I do find the Pandora main screen to be a bit more cluttered, and I do
have to wait for VoiceOver to restart after it gets hung up in the
middle of the Pandora screen. Other than this, they're pretty
comparable from an accessibility stand point.

I haven't really compared the music selections much between the two
services. The Classic Hard Rock genre on iTunes Radio did seem pretty
small to me though, but when I switched to the Classic Rock genre, I
was much more satisfied. Pandora seems to do a better job of playing
playing more songs I like, but maybe that's because I've been using it
longer and it has more data about what I like and don't like. It's
also a catch 22 since that also means I hear less new music that I
might like, which maybe is why I've been using iTunes Readio a bit
more lately.

LKike I said below, they're both free and accessible, so give them
both a download and a try before deciding if you want to upgrade.

Hi,

Are you sure you are touching the stainless ring as well as the center of
the button that reads your print? Not touching the ring will kill your
chances of having your print scanned. Also, I noticed that it doesn't work
well with a wet finger. Also, in our Canadian climate, I noticed that it a
bit slow at recognizing your print if your fingers are super cold. These
are points that make the finger recognition not berfect but still extremely
good. As a general rule, I have no problems with it.

RE: Touch ID only works for a couple of days

2013-12-14 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi again,

Since I am the only one using my phone, I scanned thumb, index and middle
finger of my right hand and also the thumb and index of my left hand. Never
had do go to my left hand and only use either the index and the thumb of the
right hand. Doesn’t matter which one I use. Also, do not press at all,
keep a very light touch, barely touching. Works every time. Right now, it
is minus 30º Celsius outside my door. If I went out there for several
minutes without gloves on, I would have to try a few times to have my prints
recognized. The worse you can do is try three times after which it will ask
you for your passcode. In that case, I just rotate to handwriting and enter
my code. Note that when you enter your passcode that way, it is private
because VO does not echo the number you drew on the screen all you hear is a
click to confirm the number has been entered.

With all these work-around solutions, I think we can wait a bit until Apple
works on it some more.

Put in thumb and 2 fingers almost 5 days ago, still working fine no matter
which finger I touch. Try taking a paper towel or something very soft and as
dust free and wipe home button. May help. I have extremely dry finger pads
too so maybe helps too. I thought too I would have problems, but seems to be
working. Now watch, next time it will stop! (smiley) Oh, have you tried
turning off and on the phone?

RE: 911

2013-12-14 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

First, 911 can't be dialed by SIRI but I have dialed very easily on the
keyboard. Also, you can use the 1touch911 app which is not free and you can
also get the 1touch app for free and enter the number 911 in the 1touch
settings located in the settings of your phone. Don't know if the prices
are the same but, when I got them, the 1touch call and the 1touch call 2
were free. 1touch call 3 and 4 were 99 cents and the 1touch911 was $1.99

You cannot dial 911 using SIRI, but you can definitely dial it using the

The only other option would be for your friend to get an app like Call 911,
one I checked out once and which was accessible was by a developer called

RE: Touch ID only works for a couple of days

2013-12-14 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi,

Sieghard has a point here. I have not had any major problems at all with
finger recognition but, from the beginning, I always used the area on the
finger where you read braille, never the tip and, if you use that part, you
will also make more certain that your finger will be touching the stainless
steel ring. If you use the tip of the finger and your finger is quite
small, you could be touching the center without really being in good contact
with the ring.

Hi,

Rolling your finger when scanning your finger makes all the difference in
the world. You never will be able to touch the scanner exactly in the same
place or at the same angle.. The system needs to have a large enough area

Not experienced that issue. FWIR, when you program in your finger, you are
supposed to roll it slightly, not sure how much difference that makes. But,
my finger works on my phone consistently as well as on my wife's phone.

Problems with latest twitter update

2013-12-14 Thread Scott Van Gorp
Hi Listers:

Has anyone else noticed that the latest update to the twitter app has been
rendered inaccessible with voiceover and IOS 7.0.4? I can't seem to navigate
or do anything with it. I'm glad I have a couple of other apps that will
work for now, but if anyone has any suggestions on how to work with the
official twitter app as well, it would be appreciated. I can't seem to read
tweets or do anything with the tabs at the bottom of the screen. Thanks.

Cordially:

Scott Van Gorp

Re: Problems with latest twitter update

2013-12-14 Thread Pete Nalda

It appears there are 3 Demo screens one has to swipe through. Also, there's a
dialog saying that, in order to use twitter with VoiceOver, Twitter needs to be
restarted. One of these is catching y'all up. Not sure, as I started the new
version with zoom on.

Re: About James voice as a SAPI5 for computers

2013-12-14 Thread BBS
Hi Richard. I agree with you that the price for James is a little high.
Although the price I got from a guy named Trevor who also works there
told me it was only $69 for the voice. Still, that's a bit high. And
getting a demo of the voice is quite the headache too. They want you to
scan or take a picture of your photo ID and send it to them. I'm
actually using James as a demo right now on my VM of Windows 7 and my
demo expires some time tomorrow. But since this is a bit off topic and
doesn't have anything to do with iPhones, you can email me off list and
we can talk more about it.
