what are you supposed to do then when it beeps fast, if i move it away the
beeps slow down and stop, if i move it closer the beeps stop and if i keep
it where it is, it beeps for ages and then some times will finally read the
product. luckily my son doesn't need to have baby food any more.

Sounds like you are describing User Error in your post.
You can be assured that if the bar code is in focus it will read, assuming
the code is in the data base. The fast beeping is to guide you to the code.

When using Short Text mode, the app only needs to get a quick picture of the
page. You should then either move your device away or put your hand over
the camera and just listen to it read.

quite often it beeps and beeps really fast but doesn't read anything, i
wanted it to read some baby food jars but it wouldn't do it for ages and
then suddenly begin to read it and i never knew what made it finally read
it. it was so frustrating and a thing that should take a few seconds could
often waste more than 5 minutes. also why does the document channel only
read a tiny part of the page, it does not read the whole thing so i use the
short text channel but that is annoying because if you move even slightly it
starts from the beginning again. i thought seeing ai would be so good but as
often with blindness technology it is not what it is cracked up to be and
leaves you with frustration with the lack of sight.

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode.
Raise your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading.
This is a live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can
pull the phone away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins
to see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

I've tried to get it to work a couple of times now, with absolutely no luck!
I think it's human error. I really don't know for sure though.

I tried to read a can yesterday. It wouldn't do anything. So I switched

I am holding the camera above the item, and moving the phone slowly back

Is this how I should do it?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Also, it might help if you can ask a sighted friend or family menber to
observe you when you try to use the Document or barcode channels, they might
be able to give you feedback which might help down the road.
All in all I still think that Seeing AI is an awesome tool offering so many
features in one app and I commend Microsoft for developing this app. The
nice thing is that Microsoft has the resources to continue development and
updates and it is probably a lot less likely to be one of those apps which
start so promising and then end in a fizzle before they disappear or simply
remain in the app store for years without updates.

You have to try it, interestingly enough I never did get to be really good with
Fleksy even before they went mainstream and changed it all around. Maybe
Flicktype will be even better then Fleksy ever was, I will definitely give it a

Mike,

No, the FlickType keyboard has no shift keys which makes it easier to type with
since you only have to be concerned with the location of the letter keys. If
you are manually typing a word such as a proper name which you wish to
capitalize, you type the first letter which will be lower case and then do a
single finger swipe up which will capitalize it. FlickType automatically
capitalizes the first word in a new sentence so you don't have to worry about
that.

Subject: Fleksy VO Coming Back as FlickType

Hello,
I'm posting this to both viphone and iDevices.
Those of you who ever experienced the original Fleksy app later renamed Fleksy
VO will be excited to learn that the app is coming back renamed FlickType.
Those who don't know what I'm talking about should sign up as beta testers of
FlickType and give it a go and submit your feedback. You can visit its website
at www.flicktype.com where there is a link to submit
an email to sign up as a beta tester.
The original Fleksy which was released about 2012 came out when Apple did not
allow third party keyboards. It was a separate app that presented a keyboard at
about a third of the bottom of your iPhone screen in portrait mode. The keys
were oversized in a high contrast presentation for those with any vision and
there was no spacebar. Any content produced with Fleksy had to be copied and
pasted into whatever app you wanted to send the text in such as your Mail or
Messages app. FlickType continues in the same vein since it uses the original
Fleksy source code which went into the public domain after Pinterest acquired
the Fleksy Keyboard and the original Fleksy VO was no longer supported.
What is great about FlickType is its predictive engine. You simply start typing
where you think the keys you want are located and do a single finger swipe
right when you're done. FlickType will announce the word it thinks you wanted
and more times than not will get it right. If it's not right, simply do a
single finger swipe down to cycle through its other choices. These choices are
all presented audibly and when you hear the correct one, you just start typing
the next word. You don't need to insert any spaces since FlickType does that
automatically. When you type the last word in the sentence and FlickType has
announced it, simply single finger swipe once again and FlickType will place a
period at the sentence end. You simply start typing the next word and FlickType
will automatically capitalize it. Only letter keys are presented on the main
FlickType keyboard which makes it very easy to rapidly type your text with only
a single finger. To access other keys such as numbers or symbols, you do a 2
finger swipe right or left to cycle through these. To capitalize a letter such
as a proper name, single finger swipe down after you've entered the letter and
it will be capitalized. Any words or names you enter manually can be added to
your custom dictionary by doing a single finger swipe up after FlickType
announces the word.

Mike,

No, the FlickType keyboard has no shift keys which makes it easier to type
with since you only have to be concerned with the location of the letter
keys. If you are manually typing a word such as a proper name which you wish
to capitalize, you type the first letter which will be lower case and then
do a single finger swipe up which will capitalize it. FlickType
automatically capitalizes the first word in a new sentence so you don't have
to worry about that.

  Hello,

I'm posting this to both viphone and iDevices.

Those of you who ever experienced the original Fleksy app later renamed
Fleksy VO will be excited to learn that the app is coming back renamed
FlickType. Those who don't know what I'm talking about should sign up as
beta testers of FlickType and give it a go and submit your feedback. You can
visit its website at www.flicktype.com where there is a link to submit an
email to sign up as a beta tester.

The original Fleksy which was released about 2012 came out when Apple did
not allow third party keyboards. It was a separate app that presented a
keyboard at about a third of the bottom of your iPhone screen in portrait
mode. The keys were oversized in a high contrast presentation for those with
any vision and there was no spacebar. Any content produced with Fleksy had
to be copied and pasted into whatever app you wanted to send the text in
such as your Mail or Messages app. FlickType continues in the same vein
since it uses the original Fleksy source code which went into the public
domain after Pinterest acquired the Fleksy Keyboard and the original Fleksy
VO was no longer supported.

What is great about FlickType is its predictive engine. You simply start
typing where you think the keys you want are located and do a single finger
swipe right when you're done. FlickType will announce the word it thinks you
wanted and more times than not will get it right. If it's not right, simply
do a single finger swipe down to cycle through its other choices. These
choices are all presented audibly and when you hear the correct one, you
just start typing the next word. You don't need to insert any spaces since
FlickType does that automatically. When you type the last word in the
sentence and FlickType has announced it, simply single finger swipe once
again and FlickType will place a period at the sentence end. You simply
start typing the next word and FlickType will automatically capitalize it.
Only letter keys are presented on the main FlickType keyboard which makes it
very easy to rapidly type your text with only a single finger. To access
other keys such as numbers or symbols, you do a 2 finger swipe right or left
to cycle through these. To capitalize a letter such as a proper name, single
finger swipe down after you've entered the letter and it will be
capitalized. Any words or names you enter manually can be added to your
custom dictionary by doing a single finger swipe up after FlickType
announces the word. Developing a complete dictionary is highly recommended
since that is what feeds FlickType's predictive engine. When your typing is
done, do a 2 finger swipe up to access the FlickType menu where your text is
reviewed for you and you can access the menu choices to copy it for pasting
in the app where you want it to go. It is very easy to learn and I strongly
recommend those unfamiliar with it to try it since sometimes there is just
no substitute for typing even though dictation is very handy.

The FlickType developer who is the original Fleksy developer as I
understand it has said they hope to have a FlickType iOS keyboard at some
point. Personally, I'm not too fussed about

Hi Bill, I hear your concerns. I am a fairly new iphone user and I had the
same concerns about affordability of new iphone that you mentioned. Add to
that the fact that my flip phone was doing most of the things I wanted it to
do, just very slowly lol!! I couldn’t believe the asking price for new iphones
and really did not want to invest heavily in a product that I might not even
like. So, I asked around and ultimately started perusing amazon.com and
groupon.com. Low and behold, one day, there it was- an apple 5 for less than
$100.00. Later on, I found a refurbished apple SE 16 G for somewhere in the
200 to 300 price range. I know the apple SE is the same size as the 5, and
uses the same accessories. So, that shouldn’t be an issue. In sum, I think
you will find something within your price range as long as you are patient and
persistent.

Subject: Upgrade process from iPhone 5S

Hello, again list.

I am concerned about the process of upgrading my 5S to a better model. It is
falling apart, as I have lost the physical mute switch and the touch screen is
sitting on the phone and I have to be careful not to lose it. The case has
been gradually losing pieces. I have had it for four years, so it is really
overdue for a replacement.

First, I am having trouble with the iOS 11 installation cycle. It seems to be
failing due to lack of capacity, but I’m not sure if this is really the issue.
I am concerned about updating apps to accommodate this new version, and I
vaguely recall hearing there is a way to tell which apps might have trouble
working when I go from iOS 10 to 11.

I worry about the transfer of my apps and data to a new phone, fearing I may
lose somethingin the process. I know I can back up the phone to iCloud, but
am not sure if this is happening automaticallyofr if there is some step I need
to take to do this just before the switch.

When I get the new phone, will I need to reconnect my bluetooth devices, my
keyboard, a tile I have on my key ring, and my headphones? Will I need to
replace these. I also have a stand for my K-NFB reader I might need to
replace, though admittedly I haven’t used it much.

I am wondering what type of new iPhone I can or should get. I bought the 5S
through my local A. T. & T. store back in 2014. It is fully paid off long
since through my cell phone bill with them. I know I could have taken a free
upgrad from them at some point, but was unsure of what model I would have
gotten, and I was afraid of going through the transfer process then. Now I
have to update with the phone falling apart, and don’t know what I can get and
still have the same transfer fears.

If I can’t get it free, I have fears about the cost of the new phone, or how
much I can afford to allow the bill to increase to pay for it that way. I am
in a jam with my available credit.

One other technical issue is the compatibility of my charger. Will I have to
replace it?

One more issue is getting a protective case for the new iPhone. The cost cost
concerns me as this may have to be a separate purchase at another time.

I would again appreciate someone helping work through this process.

Hi Alan,

I hope Maria is right and I can’t possibly imagine why Apple would not put
resources into improving SIRI especially since they now have the Homepod which
uses SIRI is it’s only interface. I am sure they know how big Alexa is and also
Google Home although I have a feeling Amazon is currently really dominant. My
problem is that I don’t want to own 3 different smart speakers using 3
different platforms just as I wouldn’t want an iPhone and an Android phone. I
know some people own iPhones,
Android devices and even Amazon Fire devices, but I prefer to spend my
hard-earned money on whatever platform I find is best for me and don’t
necessarily think more devices give me more options or convenience. I think
sometimes more is not better because you then spend so much time learning all
the different systems, making sure you keep them updated and all that. Having
said that my wife and I who both have iPhones also bought some Amazon Echos
when Amazon finally offered them officially here in Canada. We use them
primarily with our Philipps Hue lights, Lyric Thermostat and I recently
realized I could install the Netatmo skill to ask about information from the
weather station. We also use the one in the kitchen all the time for setting
timers for cooking and baking and occasionally we use the Drop-in intercom
function because I have also an Echo Dot in my office at work. I do also use
them for conversions or if I want to know what day of the week a particular
date is. Of course SIRI does conversions and the date thing just as well, but
it’s usually easier to say “Alexa, how many Kg is 18 ounces” or whatever, my
iPhone is often in my hipholster and “Hey SIRI” does not work if the screen is
covered.
As I said before, Alexa does not do well for me when it comes to playing
Podcasts and I have tried at least 4 times on different days and times to
enable the Sonos skill but each time I get an error message telling me that it
can’t connect to Sonos right now and to try again later. I wonder if it’s not
available here in Canada, have to call Sonos one of these days and find out.
In my opinion all the digital assistants have some strength, but they all have
weaknesses and limitations and I look forward to them becoming more capable
over the next years.

Sieghard

Sieghard,

I have to strongly agree with you. It seems apparent to me that Apple is
devoting its resources to things other than making Siri smarter. Alexa is so
far ahead of Siri that I hardly bother with Siri anymore. I expect Apple enjoys
a much higher profit margin from its hardware devices than from allocating
resources to making Siri more intelligent.

FlickType automatically
capitalizes the first word in a new sentence so you don't have to worry about
that.

Hello,

Developing a complete dictionary is highly recommended
since that is what feeds FlickType's predictive engine. When your typing is
done, do a 2 finger swipe up to access the FlickType menu where your text is

One thing I don’t find easy with Alexa is that if you install a lot of skills

And I share your concern but do not hope that Apple in their arrogance are

I have tried all three. And I would rank homepod at number three google home
at number to an echo at number one. Apples HomePod is nowhere close to Amazon‘s
echo when it comes to the variety and options available
And I share your concern but do not hope that Apple in their arrogance are
trying to improve home pod anytime soon

As I said before, Alexa does not do well for me when it comes to playing

enable the Sonos skill but each time I get an error message telling me that it
can’t connect to Sonos right now and to try again later. I wonder if it’s not

In my opinion all the digital assistants have some strength, but they all have
weaknesses and limitations and I look forward to them becoming more capable
over the next years.

I was told about this app from someone who seems to think it will replace
BlindSquare.

I don't think so. While it is free and does some similar things and has some
features like Seeing AI, you cannot search for a specific address or business,
you
have to pick from their list of Points Of Interest and their list is somewhat
limited. I checked under its store/supermarkets category, and while it found a

Greetings,

Below is the app store information about this app, followed by my initial
review.  Note that the name is spelled E y e hyphen d.

Eye-D, free, by GingerMind Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

App store description:

Eye-D is a movement propelled by the visually impaired community with help of
Team Eye-D. We vouch to empower the VI by providing easy access to cutting edge
technology! Eye-D is here to assit
 the visually imapired
in independent living by helping them evaluate the world around them with help
of their smartphone.  It will work as your companion when you travel, help you
explore places, tell
yiu about the objects
in front of you and read text whenever you need. This is what we have built
for you: • Where Am I: Be it the busiest suburbs of Mumbai or the loneliest
roads of Siberia, whether you are a common man or zombie, Eye-D will make sure
that you are never lost.
Tap on “Where Am I” and let the magic happen. You get to know your location
with a list of landmarks nearby. Found any of the landmark interesting? Then
why wait tap the preferred landmark and Eye-D guides you to it with directions
(currently by opening Apple/
Google maps for navigation). • Around Me: Stuck in an alien town? Calm down,
fire the Eye-D app and select “Around Me”. Bingo!! You can now find ATM’s,
Banks, Bus stops, Cinemas, Restaurants, Hospitals, Stores and even the
Religious places nearby. Select the
desired category and navigate to the preferred place. To ensure that you never
miss out a place we have provided a search radius controller. So the next time
you don’t find a relevant place nearby try adjusting the search radius to
anything in the range of
500 to 5500 meters. What? Still in that alien town? Come-on find the nearest
bus stop and head out. • See Object: I’m facing the gate… No the lemon tree….
No the bike, Easy pal!! Use the See Object mode in the Eye-D app to evaluate
your surroundings. Click
on this mode, take a picture and Eye-D app will tell you what’s in front. So
the next time you are standing at the window use the See Object mode to check
what’s happening on the other side. In case you missed the description the
first time simply swipe right
to hear again. • Read Text: We designed this feature so that next time your

anyone for help. Open read text mode, click a picture and Eye-D app will read
the text in front you.
You can swipe right to hear the text again in case you missed it the first
time. • Contact Us: Love the app? Have a suggestion for the team? Found a bug?

Please use the contact us feature to share your feedback/ suggestions. We will
look forward to hear from you :)

I was told about this app from someone who seems to think it will replace
BlindSquare.

I don't think so.  While it is free and does some similar things and has some
features like Seeing AI, you cannot search for a specific address or business,
you
have to pick from their list of Points Of Interest and their list is somewhat
limited.  I checked under its store/supermarkets category, and while it found a
lot of ones in the radius allowed, it missed two Safeway stores and a Fred
Meyer.  The one Safeway
store is much closer than several of the ones it found.

Its picture descriptions are OK, and I have not tried its text recognition as
yet.

Once you pick a point of interest, it will open Google Maps to get turn-by-turn
directions.

RE: Do more with Siri on HomePod, Apple Support

2018-04-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,
Sieghard

Yes, it's all the basic stuff and after over 6 years of SIRI the thing still
doesn't even support multiple timers. I guess if you are heating up Pizza a
single timer is OK, but if you are cooking something more elaborate where you
want a 45 minute timer so you know when the scalopped potatos need to come out
of the oven, you then want a 15 minute timer for something else and a 3-minute
timer because you don't want to overdo the garlic which you put in the saute
pan then SIRI is useless and it's Alexa to the rescue.
Oh yes, and the article forgot to mention that translation doesn't even work in
Canada where last time I checked we also spoke English. I think SIRI must be
one of Apple's biggest, unacknowledged embarrassments ever as it can do little
more now in 2018 than it could do when it came out in 2011..

Sieghard

RE: Seeing AI help

2018-04-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Also, it might help if you can ask a sighted friend or family menber to observe
you when you try to use the Document or barcode channels, they might be able to
give you feedback which might help down the road.
All in all I still think that Seeing AI is an awesome tool offering so many
features in one app and I commend Microsoft for developing this app. The nice
thing is that Microsoft has the resources to continue development and updates
and it is probably a lot less likely to be one of those apps which start so
promising and then end in a fizzle before they disappear or simply remain in
the app store for years without updates.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Sounds like you are describing User Error in your post.
You can be assured that if the bar code is in focus it will read, assuming the
code is in the data base. The fast beeping is to guide you to the code.

When using Short Text mode, the app only needs to get a quick picture of the
page. You should then either move your device away or put your hand over the
camera and just listen to it read.

quite often it beeps and beeps really fast but doesn't read anything, i wanted
it to read some baby food jars but it wouldn't do it for ages and then
suddenly begin to read it and i never knew what made it finally read it. it was
so frustrating and a thing that should take a few seconds could often waste
more than 5 minutes. also why does the document channel only read a tiny part
of the page, it does not read the whole thing so i use the short text channel
but that is annoying because if you move even slightly it starts from the
beginning again. i thought seeing ai would be so good but as often with
blindness technology it is not what it is cracked up to be and leaves you with
frustration with the lack of sight.

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode.
Raise your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading.
This is a live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can pull
the phone away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins to
see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

Hello everyone,

Could someone please give me some tips on how to possibly use Seeing AI?

I've tried to get it to work a couple of times now, with absolutely no luck!
I think it's human error. I really don't know for sure though.

I tried to read a can yesterday. It wouldn't do anything. So I switched
channels and tried to read a piece of mail. Again, nothing happened.

I am holding the camera above the item, and moving the phone slowly back and
forth.

Is this how I should do it?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Karen,
Dave is right. You need iOS 11 for the product channel to work on a 5s. You are
also missing the new Currency channel because you are on iOS 10.
So, once you replace that app, you will get both of those channels.
HTH,
Richard

Subject: A Different Question RE: Seeing AI help

I am using Seeing AI on a 5S. I thought that at one time I had the Product
channel, but hadn’t used it. When I went to use it a couple of days ago, it
was not there. What I have is Short Text, Document, Person, Scene Preview,
Color Preview, Handwriting Preview., and Light.

I have not updated my phone because I have one app that is not being updated,
and I don’t want to loose the function of that app until I am very satisfied
with the app I’m replacing it with. I know that I will soon have to give in
and make the switch. But for now I am still using version 10.3.3.

I am really happy with Seeing AI. It’s not perfect, but is far better than
anything else I’ve tried.

Is the Product channel only available when using the latest IOS update? Or am
I missing something?

I'm sorry you are having trouble. I use the document channel a lot and have
about a 95 percent success rate with it reading the entire document. The times
it doesn't, I've found that either the lighting is bad, or I'm not holding the
phone correctly, or the printing is not very good.
The key with the document channel is that you have to hold the phone quite
level, have the camera pointed more or less at the center of the page, and have
it about 18 inches above the page. Plus, you need a clear contrast between the
document and the surface the document is sitting on so Seeing AI can find the
edges of the document.
If the Product channel is working some of the time, try and figure out exactly
what you did those times because that is when you got the focus on the barcode
at the right spot. I find unless there are specific reasons to use the barcode
over just knowing what something is, TapTapSee is another good choice and
sometimes faster than trying to find the barcode.

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode. Raise
your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading. This is a
live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can pull the phone
away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins to
see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

What version of IOS are you using? I had a similar problem before updating my

reloading your preferred voice back into voicedream? These are the only
solutions that comes to mind being that you are using the latest update to

Re: Seeing AI help

2018-04-08 Thread Richard Turner
I find unless there are specific reasons to use the barcode
over just knowing what something is, TapTapSee is another good choice and
sometimes faster than trying to find the barcode.

of the page, it does not read the whole thing so i use the short text channel
but that is annoying because if you move even slightly it starts from the
beginning again. i thought seeing ai would be so good but as often with
blindness technology it is not what it is cracked up to be and leaves you with

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode. Raise
your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading. This is a
live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can pull the phone
away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins to
see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

Hello everyone,

Could someone please give me some tips on how to possibly use Seeing AI?

I've tried to get it to work a couple of times now, with absolutely no luck! I
think it's human error. I really don't know for sure though.

I tried to read a can yesterday. It wouldn't do anything. So I switched
channels and tried to read a piece of mail. Again, nothing happened.

I am holding the camera above the item, and moving the phone slowly back
and forth.

Is this how I should do it?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Voice Dream problems?

2018-04-08 Thread Dan
Hey guys,
I’ve been using Voice Dream for a long time and for the most part it’s been
great! Starting about a month ago or so, I started encountering a really
annoying bug though. I’ll have Alex reading along and all of a sudden it will
just….stop. If I pick up my phone and hit the play button (in the app) it’ll
usually start working but I can usually only go about 10 minutes before this
happens again. Does anyone know if I can fix this or if it’s a bug with the
app? I would really like to get this fixed as I use this for both school and
recreational reading and it’s becoming really annoying to keep opening up the
app just to get the voice going again. I’ve tried uninstalling and
re-installing the app but that hasn’t fixed it.
Thanks for yawls help,
Dan

Ah, VO is a defined key combination for these things, and so goes in the manual
as vo-right arrow, vo-left arrow and in this case,
vo-space. The vo combination can be changed, but current combination is good.

Arlene,
Do you not have the list of commands?
Control-Options-spacebar is the same as a single finger double tap, so to
activate a button, you would do control-options right
arrow to get to the button, then control-options-spacebar 'to activate the
button.
If you are not able to enter text in an edit box, then Quick Nav is on. So when
you land on the edit box, do the
control-options-spacebar so VoiceOver says Text Field, is editing. Then you
should be good to go.
With a keyboard, you should seldom need to touch the phone.

You can turn the help mode by doubletapping with four fingers. then just preass
each key to hear it's function.

There's a navigation mode one can switch on using up/down arrow keys together,
and there's another related combination (if Enter
doesn't do it) to effect a touch or double-tap.
Used to love all these things, but terrible out of practice now.

Re: need to know where the options key is on the bluetooth keyboard

That is often an FN key for shifting other standard keys to do something else.
Laptops use the idea when they allow use of JKL
and same 3 above and below as a number keypad, when keyboard itself hasn't got
one. So I suggest that key can or would be used to
achieve something similar.

I'll call it FN for the moment, so press fn-l in practice mode and see what it
says.
