It depends on the book. There ar definitely times when I prefer a human
narrator. However, especially when I want to use a book as a reference rather
than just listn to it for enjoyment, having the Kindle or other ebook format is
priceless. I have over 1800 Kindle books and even more in epub, pdf and Apple
Books formats. Voice Dream Reader with the Ivona Brian, James or Sharon voice
is great. When using VoiceOver, I go with Alex or the female British or
American Siri voices. Never thought of trying Samantha but I'll make a point of
doing that now.

I really appreciate being able to have a huge library of Kindle books at hand.
The audio books are prety bulky in comparison particularly where long series
are involved. I shudder to think how much room the whole Expanse series would
take up even with Audible's nice data compression. I don't have to worry about
having a whole series on my iPHONe with ebooks but have often resorted to
deleting audio books in order to recover space I needed.

Every once in a while, I stop and reflect how amazing it is that in less than a
decade, we've come from not being able to get books in accessible format at any
price to now when it makes sense to talk about which voice we prefer to read
damned near anything we want to with. Even more stunning, it's sometimes
cheeper to buy human narrated books than the same regular ebooks. To top it
off, we can fit everything including thousands of fully accessible books into a
pocket.

The first cell phone I ever b bought was an iPhone 5 on December 21,
2012 at the Apple store on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago. This was when
Apple was becoming a cultural phenomenon and the stores were tourist
destinations. Hundreds of tourists were packed into this storefront to watch
Apple lovers so I had a little trouble getting noticed at first. The woman who
helped me was also extremely helpful and enthusiastic. After I told her this
was my first cell phone ever, she found An Apple Trainer who spent an hour
showing me how to use VoiceOver gestures with my iPhone 5. It was the most
unbelievable and empowering unboxing I have ever had in my life.

Re: WayAround app and identification/labelling system

2019-04-16 Thread Deb Cook Lewis
I have WayAround and like it very much. So first, the labels are
affixed to buttons or clips or they're stickers. If you were using the
button, you'd attach it at the back of your shirt at the collar most
likely. They have two buttons, one that can be pinned and another than
is better sewn in. The tags are somewhat expensive and went up
recently, but they'll last forever and are rewriteable. You can use
the phone directly if you have a later model phone, I think 8 and up,
but if not, they have a tiny reader that pairs with the phone. My
phone qualifies, but I bought the reader because to use the phone I
had to take it out of its case. So I prefer the little reader. It's
very rast and you can get a lot on a tag. I have found it to be quite
useful as these things go, and although the initial outlay was a bit,
because I bought a variety of the tag types, I've not had to spend
anymore. The buttons that you pin and the stickers which come in those
that work on metal and those that do not have all been the most useful
to me thus far.

I have XFinity in Portland, Oregon and have had no issues with CBS, the Big

It also works on the Stream app.
So, it must be the local channel that turned something off.
Have you tried the XFinity Accessibility phone number to see if they could

reach out to the accessibility department at CBS. I’ve left a couple of
messages for them, but so far I haven’t received a return phone call.

As for Direct, not sure on the remote boxes. The last I knew they still didn’t
have speech. I finally got rid of my second receiver as it wasn’t worth the

it is there. I switched to Direct a little over 2 years ago.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Audio Description

Hello,

I know that this list is for iOS related topics but tonight I am very
frustrated with a service that I am hoping that some of you on the list might
be able to assist me with.

My wife and I are huge fans of The Big Bang Theory and up until recently we
have been able to enjoy the show with audio description on CBS. As this show is
down to the last 6 episodes we are wanting to be able to watch these final
shows with the audio description, but for some reason Dish is not giving us the
description on CBS. I have called them and told about this issue but they do
not seem to know why this is happening.

My question for the list is: is there anyone else that is having this issue
with Dish and if so, have you alerted Dish of the issue?

We are really considering switching back to Direct Tv but with Dish we have
Text To Speech on the living room tv as well as the one in the bedroom. If I
remember correctly when we were with Direct Tv a couple of years ago

I was more curious about just a bit of real-world experience, for example, if
somebody has this system, how fast does it recognize stuff, do you hold up your
iPhone and it’s virtually instantaneous as in it starts reading the tag in a
second or less etc.

Hi,

Braille labels are still the best for some things and after having received my

RE: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread R Van Lant
I am often indifferent, , but I do find human narration especially valuable in
books where the time period or character switches each chapter. Synthesizers
just don't pause well enough for me to pick up that there is a shift. Books
just as "Girl on the Train" and "All the Light We Cannot See" were the first
books I bought from Audible specifically because they switched narrators when
the characters changed and this helped me so much to really follow the story.

Hi,
This is a very interesting topic indeed. Most of the time I'll default to a
human voice as my preference. However I have had occasions when either I
didn't like the narrator for the Audible version of a book so I then went
with BookShare and one of the many voices available through VoiceDream
Reader and I was surprised how pleasant the read was. Again it wouldn’t be
my ultimate preference or default but the times I did use it I was glad to
have the opportunity to do so to obtain access to a particular title. I
won't stray off into which voices work best as that is very subjective and
the topic of great debate. But I will only remark to say that some voices
like Samantha and a few others included do lend themselves a bit better to
being sped up without becoming distorted which does help in such situations.
I'm just glad we now have as many choices as we do to potentially gain
access to so many titles we could have only dreamed of or hoped for in prior
decades. Happy reading one and all no matter which platform or voice you
choose.
Take good care.
Robin

Subject: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

Hello Everyone,

I love the iOS Kindle App because it works so well with my Focus 40 Blue
Braille display.

However, for whatever reason, until recently, I've never used the VoiceOver
Samantha TTS engine to read an entire novel in the Kindle app.

Not long ago, I was searching for a book in Audible, because it is not
available on BARD or on Over Drive, and found it. The price of the audio
book was $19, $17 in Apple books. Since the audio length of the book was
just over 5 hours, I decided to see if a Kindle edition was available. Yes,
it was and for a mere $1.99. So, I purchased the Kindle version and used my
beloved Samantha TTS engine to read the novel.

After I finished the Kindle version, a friend of mine purchased the audible
version. So, I decided to give it a quick listen to see if I would like the
book any better or less with a human narrator at the proverbial helm.

You know what? I discovered that I actually preferred the Kindle version
wit the TTS engine, better. The funny thing is, I am absolutely certain
that I would have thoroughly enjoyed the human narrator edition had I not
experienced the TTS engine rendition, first.

Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human
narrator but I am saying, that for me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely
a viable option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few
dollars.

Thanks for the link, but it says in the description “Enjoy the comfort of
Analog-Knobs combined with the advanced technology of digital touch display”.
I went to a Best Buy in Vancouver last Friday and anything I looked at either
had only a touch screen/display or a combination of knobs and touch.
Anyways, this Samsung is also a cook top only with no oven. I’d love to have a
nice cook top like this and a separate wall oven, but we don’t have the space
for a separate wall oven so it has to be a traditional range (cooktop and oven.)

later today we took a lyft Ride. There was no issue with that button, but
after pressing it, the next screen only showed that a driver had been found,
but the usual identifying info about the driver and car, and the expected
arrival time was not present. Then when the driver was one minute away that

Connected induction cook stoves

2019-04-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

I am curious if anybody has lately been shopping or even purchased an induction
range. I would like to replace my 22-year old stove and really would like an
induction cook top, but it seems to be almost impossible to find something
with analogue dials and maybe buttons, everything I have seen so far is mostly
Touchpad controlled and without sight it seems to be useless.
I really like European appliances which in the case of a stove would mean Bosch
since while I have a Miele washer and dryer, their stoves are completely out of
my range with starting prices at around $9,000 or $10,000 Canadian.
Miele But I guess in this case I may have to consider Samsung, LG, GE or
others. If anybody has something which comes with an accessible app or, even
better, with Alexa or Google Home voice control I'd love to hear about it.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Audio Description

2019-04-16 Thread blindfaith38
Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your message. I also live in GA but I am not in Atlanta but we
both get our CBS from the same affiliate so I think that I will try and reach
out to them to see if I can get them to understand that this is not acceptable.

You said that this began happening for you about 2 weeks ago, it sounds as if
that they definitely did something to cause this. at that time because it is at
this point that we stopped getting the descriptive track on Dish.

Hello, I am also actually having that same issue. However, I have Comcast. It
actually started happening two weeks ago, and this is something that has
happened with my CBS local affiliate in the past, but it has been a long time
since it has happened. Also, when it has happened before, it did not affect all
of my cable boxes, and it didn’t affect me watching the show on the Comcast
Xfinity stream app. However, this time it is affecting everything. I don’t know

If I
remember correctly when we were with Direct Tv a couple of years ago we could
not get Text To Speech in the bedroom. If there are any Direct Tv users on the

in the bedroom if we were to move back to Direct Tv?

RE: Audio Description

2019-04-16 Thread pdllogan77
I’m in the Kalamazoo MI area. My area wasn’t in the initial markets required
until they expanded that to the top 50 markets and started requiring the TTS on
the boxes, think that was Dec. of 2016, so maybe I just got lucky that the
problems I had was when they first were requiring things in my area. Somehow I
got connected with the engineering department at my local channel. I do
remember I spoke with Dish and if I remember correctly after getting bounced
around I finally got someone who was able to check with the right group to
verify that they were getting the feeds from the local affiliate.

I wish the networks would all have the secondary audio in there apps, and
things like Dish and Direct TV would also have it in there apps.

RE: Updated lyft App

2019-04-16 Thread SCOTT VAN GORP
Hi Sieghard and List:
Actually, this was an accessibility issue in the app with voiceover. I
restarted my phone and uninstalled and reinstalled, and it didn’t work. Lyft
has since ddropped an update in the app store and in the description it
mentions accessibility fix for voiceover. I updated and tested it, and it is
now working as expected. That was sure a quick turnaround!

WayAround app and identification/labelling system

2019-04-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi,

I received an email newsletter from AT Guys today and this labelling system was
mentioned. Has anybody used it? I am curious as to how large the buttons are
they mention and whether they can be used to replace say a regular shirt button.

Braille labels are still the best for some things and after having received my
expensive little LoganTech 6-Dot labeler I must say that I'm very impressed,
but for other things a system like WayAround with its corresponding app is
better since you can record a lot more information. I really like the idea of
using the iPhone which is almost always with me and considering the cost of say
the Pen Friend compared to this and the versatility of WayAround versus the Pen
Friend it is pretty tempting.

Best regards,
Sieghard

RE: Audio Description

2019-04-16 Thread pdllogan77
I would check with your local CBS affiliate to make sure they are sending the
secondary audio back to Dish. I have had issues off and on over the years and
have had to work directly with the local channels as for network programming
they are the ones. My local CBS channel had a ton of static on the secondary
channel, and eventually had to replace equipment. I have 2 ABC stations, and
one is in mono, which happened to be the one that “Primetime” auto recorded on,
and you couldn’t force it to record on the second channel unless you manually
scheduled that. This was all a couple of years ago with Dish.

As for Direct, not sure on the remote boxes. The last I knew they still didn’t
have speech. I finally got rid of my second receiver as it wasn’t worth the
hassle. On the main Genie, my opinion the speech is really poor, but at least
it is there. I switched to Direct a little over 2 years ago.

Hope that helps.

If I
remember correctly when we were with Direct Tv a couple of years ago we could
not get Text To Speech in the bedroom. If there are any Direct Tv users on the
list can you tell me if this has changed or if we would still not have speech
in the bedroom if we were to move back to Direct Tv?

RE: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread Alan Lemly
I still prefer human narration where novels are concerned but if I'm reading a
nonfiction book where names are critical or a book on computers, computer
applications, or some form of technology,
It is hard to beat Bookshare narrated by the TTS voice of my choice in Voice
Dream Reader.

The price of the audio book
was $19, $17 in Apple books. Since the audio length of the book was just over
5 hours, I decided to see if a Kindle edition was available. Yes, it was and
for a mere $1.99. So, I purchased the Kindle version and used my beloved
Samantha TTS engine to read the novel.

After I finished the Kindle version, a friend of mine purchased the audible
version. So, I decided to give it a quick listen to see if I would like the
book any better or less with a human narrator at the proverbial helm.

You know what? I discovered that I actually preferred the Kindle version wit
the TTS engine, better. The funny thing is, I am absolutely certain that I
would have thoroughly enjoyed the human narrator edition had I not experienced
the TTS engine rendition, first.

Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human narrator
but I am saying, that for me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely a viable
option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few dollars.

Mark

RE: What do I do to get my weather local instead of New York?

2019-04-16 Thread Carolyn Arnold
I guess I asked her for both Privacy and Location, should have just asked for
one, but finally got it. I will remember that it is pretty far down in
Settings. All is well, which explains why it was easy to reset the weather
location, once yall told me about going down to the bottom right of the screen.
Thanks for all the help.

It's simply called Privacy and it is in the main Settings right after Battery
and before iTunes and App Store. It is not in Settings > General and if you say
"Open Privacy Settings" SIRI will open it. Location Services is the first item
under Privacy and if you ask SIRI "Open Location Services" it will also open

Do you have location services turned off? You should check in Settings >

If it is on the weather app should report the local weather based on the

RE: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
I’m more inclined to listen to a nonfiction book with TTTS and fiction stuff
where there’s a human narrator. Spanish language is really hard to get in
audiobook format, so there’s not much of a choice there.

Mainly a VoiceDreamReader user and while I’ve got a few paid tts voices
downloaded, I more often than not, find myself going back to Samantha. With
this voice, I can usually max out at 670 WPM or whatever measure they’re using.
Spanish, it’s either Juan or Rodrigo.

FYI, If you’ve got K1000 installed on your system, you can create mp3 files
with the tts reading whatever it is you’ve scanned or selected file on your PC.

Someone else mentioned Balabolka. I’ve never used it, but as they pointed out,
you can also do the same with it.

It depends on the book. There ar definitely times when I prefer a human
narrator. However, especially when I want to use a book as a reference rather
than just listn to it for enjoyment, having the Kindle or other ebook format is
priceless. I have over 1800 Kindle books and even more in epub, pdf and Apple

To top it
off, we can fit everything including thousands of fully accessible books into a
pocket.

2019-04-16 Thread Michael Feir
It depends on the book. There ar definitely times when I prefer a human
narrator. However, especially when I want to use a book as a reference
rather than just listn to it for enjoyment, having the Kindle or other

Hi Anthony,

Just below the Voicemail heading, you'll find a Deleted Messages button that
goes all the way across the screen. Once you double-tap it, you'll be on a
screen listing all of your deleted voicemail. You can delete an indivdual
message by touching it, flicking up or down to Clear, and double-tapping. Or
double-tap the Clear All button in the upper right corner to get rid of all
of them. If you use Clear All, you'll be asked if you're sure; flick to
Clear All, and double-tap.

Anna

Hi Denise,

When you delete voicemail messages, they go into a holding area called
Deleted Voicemail. You should find a button for it on the voicemail
screen. Maybe you haven't deleted messages from there. If that's the case,
open Deleted Voicemail. It includes a Clear All button you can use to
empty everything out.

I had tried that, Sieghard, but since you said this, I tried again, even asked
Siri, launch Privacy and Locations. She said I did not have that app. Now, I
think that once I did. This is crazy. I thought that if she could open it, as I
backed out, I'd know where to come to it again. I checked in Settings, even in
General, just not there. How can that happen?

Sorry for the inept question, but for the life of me, for some reason tonight,
I couldn't find where to check about location. Of course, I went to Settings. I

Do you have location services turned off? You should check in Settings >
Privacy > Location services whether it is on and whether it is on specifically
for the Weather app.

If it is on the weather app should report the local weather based on the
location of your iPhone.

Re: voicemail question

2019-04-16 Thread Anna Dresner

Or
double-tap the Clear All button in the upper right corner to get rid of all of
them. If you use Clear All, you'll be asked if you're sure; flick to Clear All,
and double-tap.

Best,
Anna

Carolyn,

On my phone, If I go into settings, I find Privacy just below "Battery. It's
about 8 items below General

If I go into Privacy, the first item is Location Services, and it tells me that
it's on

When you are on the New York page in your weather app, what happens if you do a
3 finger swipe to the right?

I have added several cities to my weather app, but the first page is always
weather in my current location, no matter where I am.

Re: Not All Apple Stores are Created Equally (Smile)

2019-04-16 Thread Kelly Pierce
The first cell phone I ever b bought was an iPhone 5 on December 21,
2012 at the Apple store on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago. This was
when Apple was becoming a cultural phenomenon and the stores were
tourist destinations. Hundreds of tourists were packed into this
storefront to watch Apple lovers so I had a little trouble getting
noticed at first. The woman who helped me was also extremely helpful
and enthusiastic. After I told her this was my first cell phone ever,
she found An Apple Trainer who spent an hour showing me how to use
VoiceOver gestures with my iPhone 5. It was the most unbelievable and
empowering unboxing I have ever had in my life.

RE: What do I do to get my weather local instead of New York?

2019-04-16 Thread Carolyn Arnold
I had tried that, Sieghard, but since you said this, I tried again, even asked
Siri, launch Privacy and Locations. She said I did not have that app. Now, I
think that once I did. This is crazy. I thought that if she could open it, as I
backed out, I'd know where to come to it again. I checked in Settings, even in
General, just not there. How can that happen?

Best regards,

Carolyn

Sorry for the inept question, but for the life of me, for some reason tonight,
I couldn't find where to check about location. Of course, I went to Settings. I
should know, because I found where to turn off the setting that stopped my
phone every time I got in the car - phone thought I was driving, little does it
know.

Do you have location services turned off? You should check in Settings >
Privacy > Location services whether it is on and whether it is on specifically
for the Weather app.

If it is on the weather app should report the local weather based on the
location of your iPhone.

When I open Weather, I get New York. What do I do to switch it to Sanford of

Re: How to send a contact's info from iPhone

2019-04-16 Thread John Harden
The person’s phone number is what you should type in to the to field. Don’t use
hyphens or anything in the number just the 10 digit number. If that person is
in your contacts you can select it that way.

Re: Using assistive touch to clear active ram in iPhone 10R

2019-04-16 Thread BB

When you go into the assistive touch settings:
do not turn the feature on until you have selected the functions for each
gesture.

Go down to the area where you can customize the menu.
Remember that a single tap is actually the double tap for users of voiceover
and the double tap is a triple tap. You can assign three different gestures
and the one to do what you are looking for is the "restart" function, so you
can assign it to whichever gesture you select.
You should go down the list and decide if you wish to change any of the
selections to suit your needs. Since the XR has no home button, you can
assign a gesture to perform the function of pressing the home key.

After you have chosen your selections, turn the Assistive touch menu to on.
Usually the menu will appear on the right side of the screen about 1/3 of
the way from the bottom and it is on most screens. first put focus on the
menu then perform the number of taps you assigned to the function you wish
to perform.

Subject: Using assistive touch to clear active ram in iPhone 10R

So on the phones with home buttons you would hold down the power button
until the power off came up. Then you would release and hold down the
home button until voiceover would speak again. At that point you had
cleared your active ram and dumped temporary app cache. There is a way
to do this on the newer devices lacking a physical home button using
assistive touch. Does anyone understand how to do this? I've read
several articles about it but can't figure it out. You're supposed to
head over to accesibility and enable assistive touch. Then you go back
to general settings and use the shutdown button to power the device
down. But I can't figure anything else out after that.

Hi Denise,

When you delete voicemail messages, they go into a holding area called Deleted
Voicemail. You should find a button for it on the voicemail screen. Maybe you
haven't deleted messages from there. If that's the case, open Deleted
Voicemail. It includes a Clear All button you can use to empty everything out.

Best,

Hello Everyone,

Not long ago, I was searching for a book in Audible, because it is not

book was $19, $17 in Apple books.

Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human
narrator but I am saying, that for me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely
a viable option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few
dollars.

Experience from a long time audio reader, is the familiarity you get with TTS,
until you're imune to its peculiarities. Like our
screen readers. i'm trying to track down an old utility for Windows that
directly converts .txt to .mp3/wav via any TTS voice you have installed.

I wouldn't want to lose all my favourite books read by very good readers, but
TTS is a great leveller.

RE: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread Richard Turner
I've read a ton of novels with Voice Dream Reader using Amy from Ivona.
I especially prefer Voice Dream Reader over Kindle because you can adjust the
pauses between sentences so it has an even more human-like inflection.
Plus, I can read faster with a TTS engine.

Hi Mark and all.
I have read several books in iBooks and Kindel with Samantha. Call me crazy but
I enjoy her reading a lot. I've tried other voice-over voices, but I'm just
used to Samantha. Not the enhanced version either. Lol.

Using assistive touch to clear active ram in iPhone 10R

2019-04-16 Thread Gordon
So on the phones with home buttons you would hold down the power button
until the power off came up. Then you would release and hold down the
home button until voiceover would speak again. At that point you had
cleared your active ram and dumped temporary app cache. There is a way
to do this on the newer devices lacking a physical home button using
assistive touch. Does anyone understand how to do this? I've read
several articles about it but can't figure it out. You're supposed to
head over to accesibility and enable assistive touch. Then you go back
to general settings and use the shutdown button to power the device
down. But I can't figure anything else out after that.

I agree. I would mutch rather lissen to a humin narader of a audio book then a

checking the e mail or serfing the web or voice over on our phones and or mac's
why would we choose or want to lissen to another form of text to speech when we
want to read? Give me humin naraters every time hands down. From Mich.

Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human
narrator but I am saying, that for me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely
a viable option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few
dollars.

Mark

If the narrator is great, then I love a good audio book. But if they vary their
speaking volume too much, like actually whispering, then that's when I want
good ol' Alex to read it. Really though, a braille display is how I absorb
information the best, for me at least.

I hate audio books, hate them. it’s why I wanted a braille display so badly. if
I have to read text with sound, then I want it to sound as automated as
possible. the overly dramatic people reading is so distracting. I can’t stand
it.

The voice thing is so subjective. Everyone is different. The regular
Samantha voice sounds to me like she is gripping a cigarette between her
teeth and is having a bad hair day. Just my opinion though. It used to be

Yes I think Samantha is a particularly good voice, very clear and somehow
gives me a sense of wellbeing. I also don't use the enhanced version. I find
I'm not so keen on the enhanced voices I've heard samples of.

All the best

Re: A TTS Engine instead of a Human Voice for Reading a Novel? Maybe

2019-04-16 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
This is a very interesting topic indeed.

Robin

definitely not for me!
I would rather buy audiobooks that I actually want to listen to, with good
readers, who bring the characters to life.

Now I'm certainly not saying that a TTS engine is better than a human
narrator but I am saying, that for me, at least, a TTS engine is definitely
a viable option for reading novels, especially when it comes to saving a few
dollars.

2019-04-16 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Experience from a long time audio reader, is the familiarity you get with TTS,
until you're imune to its peculiarities. Like our
screen readers. i'm trying to track down an old utility for Windows that
directly converts .txt to .mp3/wav via any TTS voice you
have installed.

I wouldn't want to lose all my favourite books read by very good readers, but
TTS is a great leveller.

2019-04-16 Thread Angie Nutt
Yes I think Samantha is a particularly good voice, very clear and somehow gives
me a sense of wellbeing. I also don’t use the enhanced version. I find I’m not
so keen on the enhanced voices I’ve heard samples of.

All the best

Hi Mark and all.
I have read several books in iBooks and Kindel with Samantha. Call me crazy but
I enjoy her reading a lot. I've tried other voice-over voices, but I'm just
used to Samantha. Not the enhanced version either. Lol.
