Re: new mispronunciation in 14.8; is it fixed in 15?

2021-09-28 Thread Donna Casteen
I use Samantha Enhanced. I have not had the pronunciation problem in IOS 14.8
nor IOS 15 that you described. Most of the pronunciation problems with Samantha
Enhanced have been fix. The 2 words that haven't been corrected by Apple that I
have come across so far are: onto said as onta & defeat said as defeaturing.

Regarding updating apps.

2021-09-28 Thread Maria Heinrichs
Hi. This is Maria. I hope this isn't off topic but since someone else
was talking about certain game apps I guess I can ask as well. So Dice
world hasn't been updated in about a year. I asked the developer in an
e-mail directly why there hasn't been an update and he hasn't gotten
back. One time I asked about Game world and he said Apple didn't give
them the resources to update. Do apps often not get updated because
Apple doesn't give the developers the resources, whatever the developer
means by resources? Thanks.

RE: Fix for the issue with Voiceover not saying the name of some apps in the App Switcher

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, or you can flick left and back to the right since I have always had
Voiceover speak everything when I was going to the right, but why not make this
small change and it's fixed unless of course you have a good reason why you
don't want to turn off Reduce Motion.

An alternative is just to tap the screen when VoiceOver merely says "Active",
because then VoiceOver does speak the name of the app.

I received a tip on another list regarding the issue where when you bring up
the app switcher and flick left through your open apps Voiceover only says
"Active, actions available" or something like that but it doesn't first say the
name of the app you are on. I think on Applevis it said that it affects only
some users and that would make sense because it seems the solution here is to
turn off Reduced Motion and I assume some people may not have turned this
setting on to begin with hence they probably don't have the issue.
For me on my iPhone 11 turning off Reduced Motion entirely fixed this and I
must say that I can't notice much of a difference in other areas not having
this on. I think I turned it on many years ago because when this option was
first available there was a different issue and it made sense for voiceover
users to turn Reduced Motion on, but I'm not sure if this is still even a
concern.
Anyways, if you have this problem with Voiceover in the app switcher, just go
to Settings > Accessibility > Motion (the fourth item if you flick from the
top) and check if Reduced Motion is on, if so turn it off and I am pretty
certain your app switcher will work just fine.

Sieghard

RE: Yes virginia, there is a Santa Claus

2021-09-28 Thread Richard Turner
Joe and others,
This is the very first time in my years on this list that I used a silly
subject line to grab folks attention. It clearly worked.

I did not expect it to go off the rails.

If this group was on groups.io it would be easy to mute subjects when they have
either proven to be off topic or of no interest.

I certainly will never post a subject line this obscure in the future.

I am rethinking how much I will post on a list that is essentially unmoderated.

I think I will stick to replying when I have something to ad, and only post new
messages to Blind Apples group on groups.io where there is real moderators.

Thanks,

Richard

hank you both for your replies.
Liel, You might be right.
Siegert, I totally agree with you, but each person does things their
own way, I suppose.

I also received a suggestion to call Apple accessibility and I think
this is what I will suggest to my friend.

Thank you all again.

RE: Apple One

2021-09-28 Thread brent
I wonder if it prorates automatically, and then just charges the difference, or
leaves credit on your account for next time automatically, depending on how
early in the billing cycle you do it. I know they aren't necessarily as hard
about the refund situation as one has been lead to believe in the past, or
maybe the rules have changed since then. I had forgotten to get rid of a trial
to an app I decided I didn't want a whole year of, submitted the refund form on
their site, using the option that I did not want it renewed, or whatever the
wording actually says to that effect, and they did refund me.

Hi Mary,

While I have not had experience with the subscriptions, I would think that if
you decide you wish to go for the premium bundle, Apple would be cooperative in
assisting you with a refund. I’m not certain that Apple accessibility could
take care of it, but I would think that you would get cooperation from Apple.
Hopefully, somebody who has more experience will respond to your query.
Best regards,

because then VoiceOver does speak the name of the app.

And have you checked under Notifications > Mail > Customize Notifications that

Also, double check in Notifications > Mail that banners are in fact selected

For some reason my mail sounds were turned off after the update to iOS 15 and I
had to reenable them, but on my iPhone 11 Mail and other notifications are all
coming in as they As they should whether the phone is locked or not. Keep in
mind that now with the notification summary option and the various focus

notification summary and Mail is going into the summary.

I don't have that issue, either. I just sent my self a test email and made sure
my phone was unlocked and on the home screen and my iPhone played the email
sound I have set for my personal account.
I normally have banners for Mail turned off and also don't have it show up in
Notification Centre, but I enabled temporary banners just to test it and sent
myself another message with the subject "Another Test".
When it arrived the sound played and Voiceover said "Mail Sieghard Weitzel,
Another Test, no content". The no content of course because I didn't actually
write anything in the message body.

The one major bug I’m dealing with and don’t recall reading about in the
AppleVis write-up is that when the phone is unlocked, notifications are silent.
I don’t know if for sighted people the banner comes up, but with VoiceOver at
least, you are left oblivious as to any sort of incoming notification. In my
case, I deal with time sensitive emails so it was turning into a bigtime
annoyance for me. I thought it might have to do with the new focus settings in
iOS 15, but after monkeying around with that for a while and other settings
like having VoiceOver speak notifications, nothing changed.
I finally called Apple Accessibility on Friday after the work week was done and
explained my issue. Turns out, it’s a known bug and they’re “workig on it.” Not
much Solace since that pretty much means wait till iOS

Fix for the issue with Voiceover not saying the name of some apps in the App Switcher

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Best regards,
Sieghard

Well Mr. Ring,

You must not have bothered to read my original post.
I started out with:
OK< a completely misleading subject line, but Santa Claus came yesterday
cleverly disguised as a UPS delivery person with my iPhone 13 Pro, Sierra Blue,
256GB.
(For those who do not get the reference of the subject line, I will post a link
to a Wikipedia article at the end of this email.)

It was intended to get people’s attention who knew that I was supposed to
receive the phone on Friday … but you don’t give a damn about that. Though, it
got your attention. .

You seem to just like being critical.

So enjoy your life of criticism while I’l enjoy my new phone and sense of

moderator seems also to not give a damn about. So, there you have it.

RE: Yes virginia, there is a Santa Claus

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Well, it must be a known bug then for certain devices just as it seems to be
the case with the Wallet app crashing. I was at first a bit hesitant to
upgrade, but at this point this is probably the least buggy and most stable
upgrade I have done in quite a few years. I have an iPhone 11 and I have really
no issues at all and I'm happy I upgraded because SIRI works so much better now.

Hi Alison you can go to seven little words on line but you only et the first
puzzle. there is also a game you can download on your phone called Blindfold
Seven Words which gives you seven clues and a whole load of letters to sort out
that is the only one I can think off Take care and stay safe because you really

If you haven't found the type of app that you are searching for, I have a
suggestion. Have someone create a groups.io group. Church members will have to
join the group. The group owner can setup the group to be used to send out
emails only. Good luck on your original search.

I don't have that issue, either. I just sent my self a test email and made sure

I normally have banners for Mail turned off and also don't have it show up in

14, 13, it would sometimes not lock and I am pretty sure it is still doing that
in iOS 15 as well. I can fix this by rebooting the phone.

Also, I checked, and my screen lock is still set for never, yet, now, it is
locking on its own.

I am beginning to think that 15 is a great big mess!

RE: screen record

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
When you say you went to Control Centre, how do you do this? It almost sounds
like you are going to Settings > Control Centre which is where you set up what
you want to appear in your Control Centre, but to actually bring up the Control
Centre you touch the status bar and drag your finger down the screen a little
ways until you get the first haptic feedback, if you continue down to the
second you get notification centre.

And have you checked under Notifications > Mail > Customize Notifications that
a sound is selected for each of your accounts?
Also, double check in Notifications > Mail that banners are in fact selected
and also display on lock screen if that is what you want.
For some reason my mail sounds were turned off after the update to iOS 15 and I
had to reenable them, but on my iPhone 11 Mail and other notifications are all
coming in as they As they should whether the phone is locked or not. Keep in
mind that now with the notification summary option and the various focus
options this may also have an effect if maybe you accidently turned on
notification summary and Mail is going into the summary.

sound I have set for my personal account.
I normally have banners for Mail turned off and also don't have it show up in

myself another message with the subject "Another Test".
When it arrived the sound played and Voiceover said "Mail Sieghard Weitzel,

Turns out, it’s a known bug and they’re “workig on it.” Not
much Solace since that pretty much means wait till iOS 15.1 comes out.
Anyway, he documented my call and bug report. He said the more people contact
them about it, the better. So… get on it people and bug Apple about it if
you’re experiencing this too.
If the phone’s locked or even if I’m on a phone call, the notifications do come
in. It’s just when it’s unlocked and in use that there is no sound whatsoever.
Again, no idea if the banners are still popping up, but even with VoiceOver set
to speak incoming notifications, it doesn’t’ help.
Other than that, can’t say iOS 15 has been otherwise buggy for me.

You are hitting the wrong button. There is a plus/minus sign above the numbers
on the calculator which I believe is used for formulas.

The layout of the Apple Calculator screen is starting from the top:

Result is the farthest toward the top of the screen.

Below that you will find a row with:

Clear (or it may say all clear) then to the right of it is the plus/minus, to
the right of that is percent, to the right of that is divide.

The next row down is: 7, 8, 9. Multiply or times

The next row is: 4, 5, 6, Subtract or minus

The next row is: 1, 2, 3, Add or plus

The last row is: zero, decimal point, equals.

HTH,

Hi

By any chance, has anyone experienced a problem with the plus and minus sign of
the calculator, because everytime I touch the plus sign both of them notify me
plus and minus at the same time.

I’m not sure if this problem if it is an iOS 15 bug.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Re: new Seven Little Words

2021-09-28 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

The version that came out on friday is pretty responsive on my second
generation SE and does provide braille if Braille Alert Time is high enough. I
have it set to 3 seconds, which is long enough to show the words and clues, but
you can make it longer if necessary. I like it that the focus stays in the
letters when I add a title or complete a word. If I were using it without
speech, I would have to press Space with N to review recent VoiceOver messages,
which would be annoying, but the game is definitely playable with speech and
supplemental braille.

Best,
Anna

Anthony,

IF you hear Drag item, you are in edit mode and should press your home button
or do the gesture to get to the home screen which cancels editing.

IN brief, if you just want to record the screen to demonstrate to someone what
VoiceOver is doing, make sure the screen curtain is off.

Then, if you double tap Screen Recording you will hear a countdown, 3, 2, 1,
then it starts recording.

When you double tap on screen recording again, it will stop screen recording.

If there isn’t a more detailed walk-through on Applevis.com on how to use
screen recording I will consider doing one.

That should get you started.

No 5G? Your Verizon iPhone 13 May Need a New SIM Card

2021-09-28 Thread Alan Lemly

No 5G? Your Verizon iPhone 13 May Need a New SIM Card

Is your iPhone 13 not connecting to 5G UWB on Verizon? We have three
possible solutions for you.

By Sascha Segan

Updated September 28, 2021

The iPhone 13 is, for some people, their first Verizon 5G phone
, so it's no wonder they
may want to take it into the fast lane. Unfortunately, I've been getting
reports through email and social media

over the past few days of Verizon users seeing no 5G
  at all.

There's nothing wrong with your phone, and it doesn't need a software
update. Using my own knowledge of Verizon's systems, I have three possible
solutions, and they all have to do with Verizon's network provisioning
system.

You probably just need to get a new SIM card.

A SIMple Plan

GSM carriers such as AT and T-Mobile have a longstanding culture of
knowing that their SIM cards may be put into random devices. Verizon comes
from a different culture where it assumes a tighter tie between device and
SIM card. So sometimes straight-up swapping SIMs between Verizon phones just
doesn't work.

This often has to do with various flags for various features in Verizon's
system. But the upshot of it all is that even if you have a 5G service plan,
a SIM that was in another device may not be entirely happy in your iPhone
13.

There's a solution for this. If you bought your phone with a Verizon SIM,
you need to activate the new physical SIM using Verizon's app or website,
use that one, and throw out the old one. If your phone didn't come with a
Verizon SIM, call Verizon to get a new SIM overnighted or to activate your
phone via eSIM .

Double Feature

An ongoing Reddit thread

on the problem highlights another possible solution. Some people on the
thread have gotten their service to work by having Verizon support remove
every feature from their account on the old SIM, and then add all the
features one by one on the new SIM.

New Phone, Who Dis?

Verizon's system relies on having a database of specific phone IDs marked as
"compatible." Occasionally, IDs for a few units can end up not in the
database. That leads the network to basically say "who the heck are you?"
and offer the device limited service. A quick search shows this having
happened with an iPhone 11 on Verizon
and with an iPhone 12 on
Xfinity Mobile
 , which
is a Verizon wholesale client.

In that case, use this online tool
  to check to see if
your phone's IMEI number is in Verizon's database. Everyone agrees that US
iPhone 13 models
are approved and certified by Verizon, so one
missing from the database is just a bug. If it's not in the database, that's
the problem. Call Verizon and explain the issue; reps will probably need to
file some forms to implement a fix.

I agree with Richard re u calling apple for the answer. However, having said
that, yesterday, I heard a consumer report addressing the topic of whether the

Hi I would like to know if you can purchase a 65 watt charging block for the

Would this be worth it to purchase something like this for charging your phone
or does it not really give you A faster charging time?

Meaning would I get my moneys worth purchasing something like this or just not
bother and save my money for something else?

it set to lock after 1 minute and found that in previous versions of iOS, e.g.

2021-09-28 Thread Dan

I haven't been following all the posts
about this app so if this has been discussed just tell me and
I'll go away. ;)

I know version 7.0.11 had accessibility
issues, does anyone know if 7.0.12 has them too?  If so then I
definitely will not install.

Thanks.

RE: screen record

2021-09-28 Thread Richard Turner
Anthony,
IF you hear Drag item, you are in edit mode and should press your home button
or do the gesture to get to the home screen which cancels editing.

If there isn't a more detailed walk-through on Applevis.com on how to use
screen recording I will consider doing one.

That should get you started.

RE: calculator issue

2021-09-28 Thread Richard Turner
Anthony,
You are hitting the wrong button.

HTH,

Richard

I'm not sure if this problem if it is an iOS 15 bug.
Any help would be appreciated.

2021-09-28 Thread regina alvarado
Richard did Apple change their accessibility number? I have it in my contacts,
and I don’t use it very much. However, I’d like to use it when I need it and I
don’t want to have to try to find another number. I have it as 877-204-3930.
Just curious because the number you gave was so totally different. Thanks.

Hi I would like to know if you can purchase a 65 watt charging block for the
iPhone and if it uses USB type C to lightning?

Would this be worth it to purchase something like this for charging your phone
or does it not really give you A faster charging time?

Meaning would I get my moneys worth purchasing something like this or just not
bother and save my money for something else?

RE: an iphone charger question to purchase one of theese or not

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It will only charge faster if you pair it with at least a 20 Watt wall adapter.
If you want to make sure you are future proof for years to come I would
probably say get at least a USB-C wall adapter capable of 30 Watts or more.

I agree with Richard re u calling apple for the answer. However, having said
that, yesterday, I heard a consumer report addressing the topic of whether the
usb C lightening cable is really any faster than the standard ones apple use to
include with their phones. Both were tested and the usb c lightening cable
actually did charge faster than the traditional one.

RE: an iphone charger question to purchase one of theese or not

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Which iPhone do you have? Even the newest iPhone 13 series of phones only
support fast charging at 15 Watts, the 65 Watt USB-C chargers are for newer
laptops which support USB-C charging so while you can certainly use one for
your iPhone, it certainly isn't necessary if that is all you use it for. Which
model iPhone do you have?

Here is Apple's recommended charger which they sell via the Apple Store:

The Apple 20W USB‑C Power Adapter offers fast, efficient charging at home, in
the office, or on the go. While the power adapter is compatible with any
USB‑C-enabled device, Apple recommends pairing it with the iPad Pro and iPad
Air for optimal charging performance. You can also pair it with iPhone 8 or
later to take advantage of the fast-charging feature.

Charging cable sold separately.

Apple sells USB-C to Lightning cables in either 1 Metre or 2 Metre length, in
Canada for $25 for the shorter and $39 for the longer, my guess is $19.99 and
$29.99 in the US.

Of course you can get really good USB-C to Lightning cables which are MFI
certified on Amazon for a lot less and the same applies to USB-C wall chargers.

The one I mentioned above from Apple also costs $25 Canadian so most likely
$19.99 in the US and then of course there is the MagSafe charger for the iPhone
12 family and above which costs $55 Canadian, maybe $39.99 US.

I just read the below article where they tested various chargers with the
iPhone 13 Pro Max and the result was that it apparently can charge at just over
9 Volts and almost 27 Watts which means if you had an iPhone 13 Pro Max you
might want to get at least the Apple 30 Watt fast charger or something
equivalent. For those who like it technical, here is the link to that article:

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max charging power announced: there are surprises-Apple

This wasn't doing this in IOS 14.8 so has anyone else had this and hopefully it

Here is the "Featured Snippet from the web result" when I did a Google search
for "Will I get a refund for any remaining subscriptions if I sign up for Apple
One?"

Apple says you will get an automated refund for the remaining months of Apple
Arcade or Apple Music, after you sign in for Apple One with your Apple ID. The
company also said when your Apple One trial ends and becomes a paid
subscription, any duplicate services are canceled and you receive a pro-rated
refund.

And here the full article from iPhone in Canada:

Thanks, Les. I know somewhere I saw a reference to how if you had a
subscription to something and then you signed up for the all everything, it
would be taken care of. I’m just not sure how it works. My music subscription
runs out a couple of days from now. My husbands TV plus runs out a month or so

that I never call anybody except Accessibility, since all my devices don’t have

RE: Dictation?

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
May be Apple doing things, my recommendation would be to upgrade to iOS 15
where all of this is done on device now and SIRI for requests as well as
dictation is way more responsive in my opinion. Since I upgraded I never once
had SIRI tell me "One moment please" while it was trying to process a simple
request.
I should mention however that I think you need at least an iPhone X or XR for
this, I don't think it works on the iPhone 8.

Is there an issue with the servers for Dictation processing? mine hasn't
worked all day on anyof my devices.
Can browse and get mail, so not a connection issue.

But thisis so fundamental for getting messages done fairly quickly.

Thanks, RobH.

Hi everyone.

I have a friend in Australia who has been trying to get Siri to read him missed
calls for a few days now, only to be told this service is unavailable right now
and to try later. I have never used this feature myself, so I did not know it
was possible, but he says he has used it often for a long time. He hasn't
updated to IOS 15 yet, so we are not sure what the problem might be.

Any advice would be very very appreciated.

Have you rebooted your phone. I still experience the opposite at times, I have
it set to lock after 1 minute and found that in previous versions of iOS, e.g.

RE: screen record

2021-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You turn it on and then everything you do is recorded until you go back to
Control Centre and turn it off again. At that point the session you recorded is
saved to Photos as a video you can share.

Sorry Cristobal, what does Apple need to address? I thought you said you aren't
getting alerts and now you say you are getting them on both phones?

Right now, I just configured the email accounts I need to know about on my
business iPhone that’s still on iOS 14.8. I now get the alerts in stereo (one
phone in each pocket), but it’ll work until Apple pushes out a new iOS release
addressing it.

Turns out, it’s a known bug and they’re “workig on it.” Not
much Solace since that pretty much means wait till iOS 15.1 comes out.
Other than that, can’t say iOS 15 has been otherwise buggy for me.

load of letters to sort out that is the only one I can think off Take
care and stay safe because you really don't want the virus.  I hope they

First off, here are the touch commands for navigating the game board for each
puzzle:

* swipe right and left to advance through the screen elements as before, but
now you can swipe down and up to jump between the major screen sections (back
button, clues, answer/spelling, tiles)

* use a two finger tap to switch between reading by word or letter and two
finger swipe to advance through each clue

* when you select a tile as part of an answer, you remain in the tile section,
which should reduce the number of swipes you need

To note, the two-finger tap to switch the reading by word or letter will be
switched to a three-finger tap in the next build as it sometimes caused
confusion with the two-finger swipe.

We have hired a blind accessibility contractor to help us make it as accessible
as possible but we greatly appreciate your feedback on how we can do this
better. Your feedback on the click noise for each move is something I will get
addressed in a forthcoming build, so that if you decide to turn off the "sound
effects" in the game, it will turn off this clicking sound as you swipe through
the board.

Please let us know if this is helpful and again appreciate any additional
feedback you might have.
