How clever a solution. That is the kind of trouble shooting I normally do. you
got to it far faster than I did!

And, you could always begin a call to that number, hang up.

Go to Phone, Recents, and block it from there, then delete the recent call and
the text messages.

Ah, a little trick I learned here. You need to go all the way to the top of the
list of texts from that number, double tap on the very first time that number
texted you, and then you will find the “block” option Richard described.

I also got no option to block.

First you say a text message then a phone call you can see in recents. I don't
believe the text messages from groups that you want to delete are considered
phone calls and will show there. That would make it easier to delete.

What I get in messages is an info button then an option to delete or remove
under more. I'm not sure that was the order of things. At one point it actually
asked if I wanted to delete the conversation and I said yes, but I forgot to
look for the done button. No matter which arrangement of moves I do, the number
is still there aside from simply deleting it for the time being.

I'm thinking the that the person who created the group list
needs to redo it or delete and start over leaving those of us out of it that do
not want to be in it.

Otherwise maybe I can find the way to group all those numbers
myself then delete them in one fell swoop.

Here’s what I did that finally worked. I double-tapped the number or name at
the top of the message from whom the message was sent. Then, I scrolled to the
info button and double-tapped on it. There I got to a details screen where I
once again double-tapped on the name or number of the person I wanted to block.
This opened up a screen in my contacts list, probably the same one found under
recents. I scrolled down to the bottom of the screen and found the block
caller option. I double-tapped on that and then double-tapped in the
appropriate place to confirm that I wanted to block the caller.

Yes it is.
Touch the number, flick up to more, double tap, and then see if a button
labeled Info shows up, if not repeat the above until you find a button called
Info and double tap it.
You should then find the usual buttons to share etc., and the last one on the
screen will be block contact.
Double tap, then flick to block again and double tap and you can delete the
messages and that number won't be able to text you.

Is there a way to block a number that texts you? Evidently, someone with my
number previously was in some kind of group, and I keep getting texts about
someone dropping out. I wish they'd all drop out, and I wouldn't hear any more
from them.

gmail

2020-03-22 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
This may be a
gmail question not a voice over question. Dismiss it if you think it
inappropriate for the list.
I've been going through the "ALL" folder and getting rid of all the mail I
thought was deleted but never has been. Everything is in there including
notes and they date back to 2017, which was when I set up the g mail account
on my iPhone.
All was going well until suddenly all the mail from the All folder
wound up in my In box. I don't remember saying move all to the In box but
that is the only thing I can figure out happened when I told it to move a
few of the posts back to the in box.
Someone told me that there is a way from the phone to tell gmail to
delete all deleted mail from the server but I can't find it anywhere in
settings on the actual phone. My guess that if this is even possible it must
be done from gmail on the internet.
In settings I see a place to turn off notes and calender which I take to
mean notes and calaender appointments will remain on the phone but there
will be no back up that I can access in the archive or All folder which I"m
not sure means it will never show up anywhere in ether space. Is that a
correct assumption?
I picked up a cheapphone from Consumer Cellular and left it on the original
apple account which means if I cloud is on everything from my old phone
starts to get transferred over. I've turned backup and the drive off because
I do not want all that old gmail on the new phone. Same with not wanting
Outlook on the new phone either because it too never truly deletes
everything you've deleted. I intend to move everything over from the old
phone which is still functional for the most part but has a different
number, when the new phone gets unlocked in 180 days or so, I will move my T
Mobile chip to the new phone and ditch the consumer cellular
service. I would have no problem keeping it other than I have a free
lifetime t Mobile account through a family member and I do not want to give
that up. I would in fact recommend CC for anyone who wants to look into a
more affordable option. I bought a new 6S for $150 which some may laugh at
but it's more than adequate for now until I find the need to replace it with
something with more memory. It's running 13_ and qualifies for the newest
updates and there is no hitch with it's performance. I wil switch it over to
Spanish and run it on wi-fi alone once I buy another new phone somewhere
down the line.

Any suggestions how to once and for all get mail off the server so it does
not download to other devices? I did a google search and the only useful
thing I found before losing patience was to go into the All folder and get
rid of what is in there.

I hope all are hanging in there with social distancing and recovering from
being sick or trying to prevent getting sick. I'm taking this time to clean
up my computer and files on the phone and generally things are busy as ever
due to the fact that communication through this technology is running
smoothly.

RE: Siri Not Speaking

2020-03-16 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
I cuss at Seeri frequently and she usually responds in a huffy voice with
something like: and all I was trying to do was help you.

Just now to test what she might say I asked a question I knew she could not
answer. When she bungled the question, I said rather unfairly in this instance:
you are so f stupid. She replied in an uncharacteristically neutral
voice: I won't reply to that. Good for her.

By Richard's recommendation I downloaded Microsoft Translater and it is simple
to use and works great. You can do a text or voice search and translate from

Are there accessible apps that will allow me to speak a sentence or two into

Recently I’ve used what I believe to be a built in iPhone app. It works well

My need now is not to use this as a learning tool. I really need to use the app

Yes, now that I say that, it's kind of funny cause I must hear the Spanish
first in order to pronounce it properly! I can also capture native speakers and
translate that way too when they are around. Mostly I am studying on my own and
reading emails that are now all coming in in Spanish! Hah! It's timely to look
all that stuff up. Even if I get a single word - noun, adverb, or verb
translated that goes a long way to comprehending what is written.wor

I will look for the Microsoft Translator app pronto.

I believe all you do is hit on reply and arrow down until you hear print. If it
is not under the reply button, try one of the others. For instance when you hit
reply as in to reply to a message, you have to hit reply a second time to get
into the message body. That is because there are other options listed there
such as one to forward the message you are reading to someone else, or perhaps
to another email of your own!

At the top of the opening screen are 3or 4 tabs. One is called Crowns, one is
called Streaks and the other one is called Hearts. You have to select Hearts
then read down until you see the word Gems then the plus sign and the number 1.
I hit on that to open a lesson. It sometimes takes a few seconds so be patient.

By hit or miss, I sometimes can read stories and win points or
maybe even gems. There is a long list of things that I want to explore but you
can't get at them until you complete one level or another. I have no clue what
to do with the8 crowns I have and the 3 Streaks. I haven't seen anywhere where
any of that was explained but I haven't looked hard for any instruction on the

Yes, now that I say that, it's kind of funny cause I must hear the Spanish
first in order to pronounce it properly! I can also capture native speakers and
translate that way too when they are around. Mostly I am studying on my own and
reading emails that are now all coming in in Spanish! Hah! It's timely to look
all that stuff up. Even if I get a single word - noun, adverb, or verb
translated that goes a long way to comprehending what is written.wor

I will look for the Microsoft Translator app pronto.

RE: What's App

2020-01-24 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Thanks Steve. I'm only using What's App in the Chat mode. When sending voice
messages I don't hear anything except at the start of recording when you can
hear voice over say some things. I will turn off in app and see if that goes
away. I'm not hearing anything else, just the ping when I start recording and
the ping when I lift my finger. It's powerful to hear the person's voice live
and has a whole other feel to it than when on a live phone call. It accentuates
the person like a recording you might want to preserve. I don't save things on
my phone though, so most exchanges get deleted nearly immediately.

Here are two tips that will make using WhatsApp nicer for you if you're
a VoiceOver screenreader user (as opposed to a VoiceOver magnification
user).

1. On the Settings tab, go to Notifications, and turn off in-app
notifications. This will stop your phone from buzzing, beeping, and
speaking while you're using the application.

2. In iOS Settings, go to Accessibility, VoiceOver, then turn off the
item that automatically describes images. This will stop WhatsApp saying
something every time a new voice message plays.

What's App

2020-01-23 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Hello all
A friend has been pesterung ne to use What's App rather than text messaging.
He wants to hear my voice not read the gibberish I sometimes send him when
the dictation is shoddy and I haven't taken the time to correct it.
I first did a search for What's App and saw a few listings. Should I
assume that the App I want is called What's App Messenger?
When I hit on the "redownload" button, it said I was in the UK
store and it was not available for download to my phone and I needed to get
it from the U.S. store.
How do I get back to that? I looked something up the other day that
was only available in the UK which must be why I am stuck there. I only see
an ok button nothing more.
I had What's App on my phone ages ago but for whatever reason did
not stick with it.

2020-01-19 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Penny and Kelby
I can't tell you except that I just went to Settings and Duo Lingo and see some
things that need to be turned on there, like microphone and speech recognition.
Check that out.
If that is not the problem you and Kelby are having, maybe Regina has a fix for
you both.
I downloaded the App recently but can't tell what version it is.

I think I downloaded the correct app, but the first thing it asks me
to do is to choose one out of four pictures. This obviously will not
work for me!

I need an auditory language app, not one that asks me to choose which
is the correct picture of a cat...

What am I doint wrong?
Thanks.

It's Duo Lingo. I access it on my i Phone. It's a free download from the App

Hi to both of you. I am coming in late to this discussion and find
that I am very interested in this language program. I clicked on the

What service is this? How expensive is it? What languages can one learn?

Thanks so much for sharing this information.

Ihave a better suggestion. Go to YouTube and Plug in Duo Lingo Spanish Lesson 1
and see what comes up. There is a guy who goes through the lessons and it's the
same as what is on the App. He does it in English and you will hear what the
App says in both English and Spanish. In my next post I will send the link to
that first video in the series so you can get an idea of how it works. That
is, if you can figure out what you are missing.

There may be pictures but on my App there is a list of things to choose from. I
swipe to the right to go down line by line and see what the choices are. They
are words and you choose the one that is the word in Spanish for water. I
probably just double tap on the correct answer and it is selected. Then I swipe

Maybe there are some settings you need to turn on. Sorry you aren't
getting any useful feedback. I don't remember having to do anything for voice
over to read me what was there.
The program is fairly intuitive cause there isn't a lot to read on a
single screen. After you answer what questions are there, it says check and you
hit on that and I even get a positive sound and vo says you are correct. If you
are not correct, it says something different.
Good luck trying to get it to work. I have other issues with the App
which causes me to quit it for awhile then go back and see if I can figure out
how to continue with the lessons.

Language Learning Apps

2020-01-18 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Duo Lingo is good and systematic in it's approach. If you don't get a perfect
score on a given lesson, it will hammer you to death with the same questions
over and over again. The problem for me is that I can't figure out how to keep
going through lessons and I think it has something to do with the Tabs. The
tabs are labeled Crowns, Course, Street, and Hearts. Hearts has gems in it, and
they are like points you need to use to start new lessons. If you select that
Tab that seems to be the only place to continue lessons from and voice over
says that. Problem is that if you quit a lesson it brings you back to a
starting page with a list of all kinds of interesting topics but you can't look
at them.
With the heart tab selected, it shows you how many gems hearts you have
and you need to hit on anumber like 1 which it shows you, and then you continue
on where you left off, even though it seems like I am still annoyingly close to
the first lessons.
With the Hearts tab selected There is a short list of things that voice over

I ssume it is to purchase some other version of Duo Lingo.

Did you set the type of notification you wanted through Notification Settings,
not through the setting called sound? There are a lot of choices to be made and
likely a done button to lock them in place.

Oh, this may be done differently with IOS 13, so I may be
barking up a wrong tree.

receive emails and facebook notifications. I checked the settings and all my
sounds are checked. Should I reset?

the native Books App with voice over does not read the text. Too bad. I guess
it's back to my recorded books which are easy and require no fussing with. Duo
Lingo is so repetitive, it's tedious. I've found the same to be true of other
audio course work like the Pinzler series.

I guess if I want to look at spellings I'll just randomly pull up lists of
things on-line using my PC.

My braile skills are not good enough to interpret all the contractions quickly
enough to make it worth it though I do comprehend the pronunciation of words
well enough that it might be doable.

And does anyone else feel like Learning Ally's web site is needlessly obscure?
How I love the ease of navigating the BARD mobile site on my phone.

I thought of switching my phone to Spanish but am terrified I won't understand
much. I understand that anything read will be read in English since that is the
language my phone is set to. What I want to see is the spelling of words in
phrases and sentences and verb conjugations, as well as lists of vocabulary.
The pronunciation is not the difficult part for me, and I can always go to the
i Phone translator and plug in the same words if I want to hear them pronounced
right.
I want to find some text books I can read on-line or download to my phone. I
don't need audio. Plenty of that is available through the recording houses for
the blind.
I've listened to a ton of language podcasts on YouTube, which are great
but the teachers write things on the board which do not appear anywhere other
than on the video for the sighted viewers pleasure.

English which has Italian conversations and vocabulary lists and verb tables in
Italian are still all read out in an English voice.

2019-12-14 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Hello all
I am stil living in the dark ages when it comes to knowing what my options
are for accessing e-texts either through ibooks or Voice Dream or through
whatever commercial avenues would allow me to download actual texts of
books. I am not talking about audio, I want to see exact formatting of
print texts for short stories, poetry and novels. I am interested in Espanol
language texts as well. Accent marks will definitely throw off any scanning
app I might use.
Can anyone simplify this for me and point to the most common places
to do this? Bookshare is great but the scans are not verified and often
won't give me the seamlessness and exactness that I want in a text.
Any help anyone can provide with must resources and sites would be
greatly appreciated.

uploaded to a server or shared with Apple or any other app developer. The Hey

Siri personalization and the synthetic intelligence-based mostly options in the
Shots application are two examples of that. “The Apple Neural Engine in

the A13 chip performs around 100 billion operations per image to recognize
faces and spots devoid of ever leaving your product,” says Apple.

At a time when well-known quick messaging apps these types of as the Fb-owned
WhatsApp are beneath huge scrutiny for not fully securing user messages and

also getting susceptible to spy ware injections, iMessage could just be capable
to make a strong situation for alone. Apple claims that just about every

solitary concept that you send out utilizing iMessage to a different iMessage
user, is encrypted. This incorporates text messages, pictures, videos, emojis,

GIFs, you title it. And regardless of what contextual recommendations that
iMessage delivers through your conversations, all those are generated on the

system by itself.

Then there is the total debate about how you are tracked throughout website
browsers and apps, to be served contextual advertisements based mostly on your

internet use heritage, what you have been looking for and even any solutions
that you may possibly have been wanting up on searching websites. The Safari

world wide web browser, for occasion, has one thing recognized as Smart
Tracking Security. “It operates by separating the 3rd-bash information applied

to track you from other searching facts, so what you search at on the internet
continues to be your enterprise — not an advertiser’s,” states Apple. The

AI and machine finding out function is carried out on the system itself (which
suggests no info is shared with any third-get together companies) and this

element is on by default on all Safari browsers. I can say with certainty that
with Safari as my default browser on the Iphone and on the Mac (those people

are the two devices only that I did web searching on to check how perfectly
this functions), apps this sort of as Facebook and Instagram have been totally

thrown off my scent. I look through for some products on the internet or lookup
anything on a shopping web-site, and contrary to in advance of when working

with Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser, no identical adverts pop up for
me on Instagram and Fb, for example. Even the adverts that other web-sites

serve up are not an ode to my precise world-wide-web searches. Envision, lousy
previous Instagram is caught in an limitless loop serving me adverts for

a Charcoal toothpaste I searched for 2 months in the past, mainly because it
doesn’t know anything immediately after that!

But you can’t normally do everything on the gadget itself. Permit us get the

Nearby Explorer

2019-10-30 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
All is well with Nearby Explorer, not the on-line version. Tweaked settings
and now I hear street names. Downloaded one of the first 2 in the lists for
Google Maps which appear to be identical only the descriptions aren't. Both
are 144 mb. I was confused by how each app was prefaced by my hearing
"advertisement button." Many more things are now showing as nearby.
I wish I knew exactly what set of maps was downloading since voice
over said it was already 100% complete and now it is moving on to
downloading or updating more maps. I'm curious about the process.
Dulce are you using on-line Nearby Explorer now?

Nearby Explorer and Google Maps

2019-10-30 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Hello
3 days ago I downloaded Nearby Explorer from a family sharing purchase page
in the App Store. What I have is Version1.30.00 copywright date of
2010-2019. I've hard since that the only Nearby Explorer now available is
the on-line App. This does not appear to be true since the app I downloaded
works fine except it is not announcing street names.
I've looked at every setting and streets is dimmed out. I am getting
business names, precise compass directions, and all kinds of other things
that I want. . One of the few things I have turned off is Gobeam. I don't
even know what it is.
I am using an i Phone 6, and I cannot update to 13, and the bugs
others have reported are not relevant to what I am running.
I just selected Google Maps in Nearby Explorer's settings. I went to
the App store to download some Google Maps but there are so many choices and
I don't know which I should choose. Help!
I updated the maps when prompted by NE when I first downloaded the
app, and that had to be Apple maps. In Settings there is an option to delete
the Maps App, but is it safe to do that. Will my iphone truly allow me to
run Google Maps on it if I choose the most comprehensive of their Maps App?
That seems unusually altruistic.

RE: How do I delete an FB post using my iPhone?

2019-10-28 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Duane
You can also go to your timeline by way of the FacebookMenu Tab at the bottom
of each Facebook App screen. Then you have to find and hit on Profile and show
Profile pages, then arrow down or go heading by heading until you get to
"manage posts." From there swipe right to go down line by line until your posts
start. Each status update should have a more button, and it might be above the
post or after the post is finished. The more button is not always in the same
place, meaning it might be in a different place when you are in theNewsfeed as
opposed to on your Timeline. Do not hit on your name because that will not open
the post as you might imagine but it will simply take you to the top of your
profile page again.
You can also review all you have responded to and posted through
something called the Activity Log which you also get to through the profile
limk / page which you can only get to using the App by first selecting the
Facebook Menu Tab.
Like most Apps or web site, you have to get familiar with what's on a page or
what happens when you hit on various links. It pays to spend time seeing how
things are layed out then hitting on links (andTabs) to see what your options
are, since it's not always obvious to start with where things are or what
options are available.

Thanks.
I am not running the latest version of Facebook so maybe I should update. I
also hear that you used to be able to move the order of photos within an album
but that appears not to be doable anymore. Can you do it with the latest
version?
On the PC interestingly enough, I just discovered that one screenreader lets me

Facebook

2019-10-22 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Hello all
In the last day I managed to upload some photos to Facebook using my PC. Now
when I go back to either albums I created or ones that have been there for
awhile, the individual pictures won't show. It may say Timeline Photos and
how many pictures are in there, or the name of a photo album, but when I hit
on that or "see all photos" I am not in the usual area where there is the
picture, a place for the caption, comments on the photos, and a next and
previous buttons.
Using the Facebook App with voice over I can select a particular Tab such as
Albums or Uploads but only one picture is described. If I tap on it it will
open with whatever information is associated with it. From there it will say
1 of 11 photos but I don't know how to get to the next picture. Does anyone
know?
I'll look again for a setting on my phone for preferences having to
pictures and videos, but when I did that yesterday, I didn't see anything
that would be useful for accessing them or changing the privacy setting for
my photos.
I am hoping not to have to employ more sighted help.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help that is well versed in the
part of their profile page that has all their photos.

family sharing, and sorting options in podcasts

2019-09-19 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Richard

I used Apple Accessibility when I first got an i Phone years
ago. I forget they are still out there. I see al the info regarding the
organizer just don't see her purchases anywhere any longer which used to show
when I selected the Update Tab.

In podcasts the structure is a little different now but I
found part of what I could use by sorting either by title or recently played or
updated. Still voice over isn't consistent in letting me know where the options
are for removing podcasts from the library, etc. Voice over bugs?

One last question, perhaps for the accessibility line as well.

Some of my Siri Suggestions or Siri Shortcut Suggestions have
an entire text message in there as a suggestion. I'd like to wipe them all out
but there is no option for deleting any or all of them from what I can tell.

Maybe there are new gestures in 12.4 that I am unaware of.

family sharing, and what happened to the option to reorder podcasts

2019-09-18 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Hey all
A few more things that are different since updating to 12.4 is that I no
longer see my family member's list of purchases and downloads in the APP
Store under the UPDATE TAB. That family member does indeed show in settings
somewhere having to do with family shairing, but can I assume any purchase I
make will go to that family member's account? I also miss seeing her
purchases which I could easily go through to see if she had something I
want.
And is there no longer any option to reorder podcasts in the native
podcast app? The edit button is not used for that. Yes, there are ways to
open podcasts without having to manually swipe to get to the one I want, but
it bothers me that I can not reorder them in the list. In fact once inside
the podcast I want, it is no longer streamlined as nicely as it once was way
back in 10 _. Sometimes the mini player gets you into the particular podcast
and it's episodes and other times it appears to serve as a 30 second rewind.

RE: "Message Failed to Send"

2019-09-16 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
This never happened to me when I had Verizon, but then I recently updated to
12.4 and this might be another one of those odd misfires.

I’m on Verizon. So it appears this is not a carrier issue unless multiple
carriers have the same problem. Interesting that some of us seem to get a
message not delivered notification but the message still went through. In my
case, and I have checked probably 20+ occurrences, the message was never
delivered. Now I just leave messages in the message app. If I try to send to
someone that I have sent a message to in the past & the message is still in my
message app, it always goes through.

Also, several people have mentioned that they don’t have this problem if they
don’t use Siri to send the message. In my case, I have always used Siri. I
will have to try to type in a message to someone with an Android who has no
message in my message app & see what happens.

Twice in the last week, I have sent text messages from the phone (7 plus?) and
have gotten back a message saying “message failed to send.” In the first case,
the message was indeed sent, as I got a reply. Today, I had Siri send the
message, to someone in my contacts, and still got the error message. (don’t
know yet whether recipient got the message sent today.)

What’s up? Is this an issue with my carrier (Consumer Cellular) or the phone
itself? Why would it fail to send if I had Siri do it?

Sometimes the message does indeed send but not always. Perhaps there is a
setting for timing out or canceling out the message if it will not send in a

The message I sent today, through Siri, arrived despite the message. The other
one I sent last week, on which I got the error message, I did manually.

So my conclusion is that this “failed to send” message is erroneous. An
erroneous error message. Imagine that. I figure it can safely be ignored,
except that if a message really does fail to send, how would we know?

Siri or dictation malfunction

2019-08-30 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Is this happening to anyone else?

since updating, when I am asked by Siri if I would like to replay or call back
the person whose voice mail message I have just listened to, what happens is
that the last person I have called is dialed back, not the person whose message
i have just listened to., Along the same lines, sometimes the wrong person is
called back and this can happen when the names are not even remotely alike.
Come to think of it, it may b doing the same thing, simply calling back the
last person I called or texted.

Today it took three tries before Siri was able to call the
person I asked for that was in my Contacts.

It's too bad we can't just tell Siri to look in Contacts, since
if this is programmed in already, it isn't working all that well.

And I'm totally baffled why the more current IOS now takes me
to the message field rather than let me dictate and send a text message without
having to open the app. This was never the case when I was using 10.3. I think
it has to do with the persons who are not iPhone users but those who use
different types of phones, so their messages are not i messages. I went ahead
and created shortcuts for the most commonly called or texted friends, but that
hasn't helped either.

Any one or more steps I can avoid in performing any one
function, like calling or texting someone using my phone, the better. That is
why I have a smart phone to start with.

Is it possible all of this is because I use an
i Phone 6 and not a higher model phone?

RE: Siri claims I have no voicemail messages and refuses to dial!

2019-08-29 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Hello J.

As you said, if you ask Siri to call voice
mail, she will tell you that there is or has no voice mail. I just tested this.

If you ask Siri to call yourself she will. You would then listen and follow
instructions on how to retrieve your mail with the password you have set up.
This is how you would retrieve voice mail remotely.

If you simply ask Siri to play your most recent voice mail, she
will do that if you have any unopened voice mail messages. If all of them have
already been listened to, she will say something like "there are (or you have)
no new voice mail messages but there (or you) have 2 saved voice mail messages."

I'm sorry if anything I have written below is already well
known to you.

If you have notifications for phone off, you will not see in
the DOC the number or calls or voice mails you may have gotten in any period of
time. You will need to open the phone app to see if anything has come in. Once
in the phone app, depending on what you select, Recents or Voice Mail, all the
information you want is there.

I have other disappointments and frustrations with Siri since
updating, but trust the security patches alone made it worth it. I can't say. I
understand there is or will be one more update for older phones such as the 6,
I'll do that and then be done with it until whenever I need to replace my
current phone.

I've had the same experiences re Siri saying I have no voice mail (Even when I
have just missed a call and heard the notification announcing a message was
left) and she will refuse to phone saying that there are no voice mail
messages. It has been this way since I first got my IPhone 8 in January so I
had thought it was just the way Siri is. (Frankly the feature is such a
disappointment in so many ways one more didn't make a major difference.) But
if these are actions that it can perform that would be great.

I'm forwarding to everyone in case you do not already have Comcast/Xfinity and
live in an area that they serve, or know someone who might qualify.

<<>>

If you aren't already aware, Comcast has recently expanded its low-income
“Internet Essentials” program. There is now more criteria which will expand
eligibility for this low-cost service to more people stuck in the digital
divide. This will allow affordable in-home internet service which will free
more people from having to use public Wifi hotspots to get internet access.

Learn more about Internet Essentials by Comcast program in English at
internetessentials.com

or in Spanish at es.internetessentials.com

Summary of the Internet Essentials program is as follows:

How to Qualify:

To qualify, your household must:

Be in a Comcast serviceable area.

Receive a state and/or federal assistance program noted below.

Not have any level of Xfinity Internet service now or within the last 90 days.

Not have an outstanding Comcast balance that is less than one year old.

Including meeting all of the criteria noted above, your household must also be
eligible for or receive at least one of the following public assistance
programs:

Medicaid: Federal Healthcare Program (Such as the Oregon Health Plan).

NSLP: National School Lunch Program.

SNAP: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. (Formally known as food stamps)

Housing: public housing assistance including HUD, Section 8, Housing Choice
Vouchers, etc.

TANF: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

SSI: Supplemental Security Income.

LIHEAP: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Federal Pell Grant: Community college financial aid (CO and IL only).

WIC: Women, Infants, and Children.

VA: Veterans Pension eligibility determination letter from the Veterans
Administration.

Tribal Assistance program including TTANF, FDPIR.

What You'll Get

Internet Essentials includes:

15 Mbps downstream / 2 Mbps upstream Internet service for just $9.95 a month +
local sales tax (if applicable). (A 1 Terabyte data usage cap applies as with
other Comcast/Xfinity services)

No activation fees and no equipment rental fees for a Comcast provided Wireless
Gateway delivering in-home WiFi!! (This is a huge savings considering Comcast
charges their full-rate customers $13/month for the equipment)

Upon approval of eligibility, the option to purchase a refurbished computer for
just $149.99 + tax. (Windows 10 laptop OR desktop computer. See the Welcome
Kit page for details: https://www.internetessentials.com/welcome-kit )

Norton™ Security Online: Helps secure multiple PCs, Macs, smartphones and
tablets from online security threats.

Access to free Internet training online, or in person at participating partner
organizations.

Access to 40 (individual one-hour sessions) of Xfinity pubic WiFi Hotspots
every 30 days. Xfinity Wifi Hotspot Finder: https://hotspots.wifi.xfinity.com

Under this new expansion, internet access eligibility will extend to an
additional 3 million low-income Americans. According to the U.S. Census, people
living in high-poverty cities are 10 times less likely to have broadband at
home than those in higher-earning communities. Comcast has already connected
52,000 households in Oregon and SW Washington.

If you have any questions, reach out to the Comcast Internet Essentials contact
center at 1-855-846-8376 (Hours of operation are 8 AM to Midnight
(EST), seven days a week.) or the links noted
above.

RE: Siri shortcuts

I'm so thoroughly unimpressed by this lack of recognition. I never had this
problem before. It's funny too, because I am someone who loves to tweak
settings to make the most of them. I text a lot, and a wide range of people, so
by now
Teaching Siri how to pronounce a name is possible though I can't remember off
the top of my head how to do it. Often she asks of her own accord how to
pronounce a name, even if I have already spoken it and it is an easy one, like
Jim! A name like Dulce, on the other hand requires teaching Siri how to
recognize and pronounce it.

I have had problem with Siri about texting. With one person, I just about have
to tell her number instead of Mary Jones Mobile to get her to text, and she is
the lady I ride to church with weekly. She likes me to text her to remind her.

Another thing, I use the name Jim very frequently in tests, but so many times,
I have to get her to do it again, because she says Gene.

text him. Siri never had trouble knowing before that texting meant a mobile
number, and when phoning, if several numbers were in there, I would either
specify or she or he would ask for clarification. Like I said before, I only
have one Miles.

Now I am going to see if I can get some info about how best
Siri shortcuts works. It really is a pain in the butt to have to create
shortcuts for some of the simplest things, especially when it comes to phoning
and texting. I'd also like to delete the suggestions she already has in there
for me because I have edited some of those contacts and don't want to see the
old info in there.

My use of my iPhone is for the voice over menus, and the less
gestures I have to make the better. I have had carpal tunnel in years past that
was extremely debilitating, and having to take additional steps to do things,
such as go into Contacts to call or message someone or have to create a
shortcut with recording one, etc, seems to overcomplicate the beauty the phone
has provided me in the past.

Sorry, but this is one where Siri truly has been dumbed down, not
improved.

SIRI learns a bit over time so if you have two or three contacts with the name
John and you almost always call just one of them SIRI may just call if you say
call John. But for me SIRI has always asked which John, to use that example, I
wanted to call if it was somebody I called less frequently and if I had several
entries with that first name in my contacts. This of course only makes sense
because how would you otherwise be able to call a different John if SIRI ever
only called one of them and often SIRI doesn’t know simply things one would
expect it to know so I don’t think reading one’s mind is going to be on the
menu soon.

My guess is that after the update SIRI maybe reset or lost some of what it
learned over time and is starting to built this up again from scratch.

Why the need for the extra step to get Seeri to recognize someone in my contact
folder? I always used to simply say text and the name of the person, and almost
always only used a first name. That worked. Using Seeri to make calls has been
far less reliable. I guess I'll have to do the shortcut thing, but really...
It's like Richard saying that the Company field doesn't work. Why put it there
then?

All is pretty much worked out by now, except for the different voices. I
definitely have things like the reminders in the old voice but, Seeri has a new
chosen voice since updating. I scanned through some settings after the updates
to see what might have been switched on, but didn't look at

seeri at all. I'll do that now.

Yes, I deleted the Tune In App and installed it again. Since I had no
sign in, I had to put my local stations and shows in again. At first even
though I hit on the favorite button, to select a local radio station, voice
over did not say selected. When I hit favorite on a show, in that case, it
indicated that it had been selected. Oh well. So much for consistency. It's not
a deal breaker.

Hello Deidre,

Once you contact Miles, if you go to Siri settings and go to the shortcuts
section, you should see a shortcut to contact him. You can assign a phrase to
that shortcut like, "Call Miles," and use it to contact him in the future.

Have you deleted and reinstalled TuneIn yet? sounds like that should fix it.

VoiceOver only uses one voice throughout the phone. There are more options for
voices in iOS 12 than 10, though, I think.

Best,

Anna

Richard,

I remember now, that what you wrote, is how to remove a
favorite. I wonder why, on the other hand, that I can't add one!

I thought I'd done the double tap and hold to reorder things
but will try again, that is if it comes up once I take the phone off lock and
try to resume the stream that was playing before I stopped it.

For quite a while now, the way to remove a favorite is to open it and double
tap on the unfavorite button, or deselecting the favorite button.

To rearrange favorites is not documented, but I found a slightly tedious way to
do it.

You double tap and hold on a favorite, and slide up or down in your list.

Given the size of my SE, you cannot move stations a very long way at once; but
with some trial and error, I got things rearranged.

I'm sorry TuneIn is being so difficult.

You may want to try the reboot with holding the power and home buttons for
about 6 or 8 seconds to do the forced reboot.

Tune In

2019-08-08 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
It's taking forever to load up. I get no voice over unless I wait 4 or more
minutes and tap around, the tapping around may be doing nothing. I will seek
some sighted help to see if anything is coming up on the screen. All my other
apps like YouTube and Facebook work great, in fact better.

I see no settings or options in Tune In for anything anymore
other than to create a sign in or go premium. The favorites button no longer
works to put something into my favorites, formerly the Profile Tab, and I lost
2 of my local stations.

As for logging in, their policy is just that a license
agreement and privacy terms policy, but it has a dark tone to it which made me
not want to create a login, plus I would need to know in advance if I can stay
logged in or not.

Then I see no way to remove old stations, no edit button, no
gesture that I am aware of to remove or change the order in which my favorites
and podcasts are listed. Is there a new gesture that I am missing?

The update took very little time which I was thrilled about.
The only hitch is the problem I'm having with Tune-In. I fear I will go through
a whole new set of antics if I delete the App and install it fresh. I'm talking
about the free version.

Thanks all for helping bring me more up to
date. I knew listers hear would be the best source for correct info.

Ok, Dave. I hear you.
I had a hard time deciding to do without the phone tonight, since it is
still early in the evening. I know it will take time. I'm now eager to see the
result. However, as I suspected I might, I lost Tune In Radio when I updated.
It won't open. Maybe after I update the IOS, it will.

One more thing. Just remember, that the update, will be larger in size, as
you have missed quite a few updates. So, it may take longer to download, and
install, as the iPhone 6, has a slower processor, than the later phones. So
don't panic, if it takes a while to update, and restart. Just keep it
plugged into the mains power, and leave it to do it's thing, and don't do
that thing, that some people do, and start pressing buttons, and trying to
reboot their phones.

updating

2019-08-07 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Hey all
I'm one of those old dinasaur's who never updated beyond 10.3. I've got
plenty of storage left on my iPhone 6. One friend with a 5S said the more
recent updates were not any kind of improvement for his phone, and he
proclaimed that the updates were geared to newer phones. I fear the jump
from 10.3 to 12.3 might cause some problems at this point.
Speaking of newer versions of Apps, I downloaded the Facebook App
recently and have deleted it several times already. It's back on the phone
again with the same issue that drove me to delete it twice already. I get
bumped out of the post I am reading and don't know why. I assume it is
because some notification is coming in or perhaps the newsfeed is being
refreshed automatically. It's annoying. I wish I hadn't deleted my older
version some time ago. It worked just fine without all the bumping me back
to the top of the page. Unfortunately, or unfortunately, the Facebook App is
so much easier to use with a screen reader than accessing it through their
main site.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so did you ever resolve
it?

Dick Tatian problem

2019-08-02 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
No joke Sieghard.
I looked at the accessibility settings on an Android the other night
that a friend had, and paid very little for, since it was through Virgin
Mobile. Right off, there were 3 options, none of which indicated anything you
could intuitively select. I hand it to Apple that at least things listed in
settings are usually fairly obvious, plus they have the explanation under the
item to be selected or turned off.
I can't tell you how many times I ask Seeri to dial a person, and I get
that she can look it up on line for me. I'm talking about persons who are in my
Contact App.
Between the added fussing on the iPhone and the crappy response I am
getting through my current server,Verizon, I might experiment with cheaper
options, and see what I get for a fraction of the cost.
The kind of dictation issue I have is when the voice over instruction
to double tap with a single finger... gets plugged in when I start dictating.
These seem like such easy issues to resolve, but then what would I know about
that?

There are lots of dictation tips and tricks, but some of them never work for
me. For example, if I dicate to SIRI something like this:

Buy 6 bananas SIRI always or usually writes the number six as a word and not
the number 6.
I read you should say the word "numeral" in front of a number if you want this
number to be written as a number. I tried this and got "Buy numeral six
bananas".

And I can't believe you still can't say "spell this" or another trigger word
and then get SIRI to spell out a word which I know for sure it will get wrong
otherwise. I mean, it's been 8 years since SIRI and dictation were introduced,
come on Apple.

RE: battery drain

This was extremely helpful. How long have the phones been using lithium
batteries? From the outset?

Subject: Re: battery drain

Leaving your phone plugged in will help, and I tend to plug my phone in
whenever it's convenient, but it's also meant to be a mobile device, so
I'm not a slave to a charging cable.

Lithium ion batteries have a life span based in something called cycles.
A cycle is when you end up going through a full charge, even if it
happens in increments. For example, if you go down to 80% charge, charge
it up, and then go down to 50% charge, charge it up again, and then go
down to 70% charge you'll have used up one cycle since you used up 20%
and then 50% and then 30% for a total of 100%. This is why it's good to
plug your phone in when you can to save cycles.

Lithium ion batteries also tend to like shallow charges, so again, if
it's convenient, you'll want to charge it up when it gets between 80%
and 40% left on your battery. Again, this is just something they like,
but you won't be doing significant damage to your battery if you let it
run all the way down or top it off when it's only down about 5% or 10%.

There are two things lithium batteries don't like. One is heat, so try
to keep your phone from over heating, like leaving it in a sunny car
with the windows up. They other thing they don't like is losing all of
their charge. This won't happen when you let your battery go down to 0%
since the electronics on your battery will say you're at 0% and shutdown
even though they still have some charge left. What you don't want to do
is let your phone run all the way down and then store it somewhere,
since your battery will lose charge even if the phone is powered off. If
you want to store your phone for some length of time, make sure the
battery is topped off first.

Anyone can check anything I've said by researching this on your own. The
last time I read up on this, Battery University had a good article.

Hello all
Someone I know repeatedly tells me that she keeps her i Phone 6S plugged in
all the time, and that it does not add to the wear on the longtime battery
life of the phone. What I think she is suggesting is that because the phone
is plugged in all the time, (she has an additional battery pack of some sort
as back up when she is out) that the phone never goes through cycles of
recharging which means the battery will last indefinitely.
I have an iPhone 6 and don't know if this applies, or is advisable.
I'm still stuck back in the thinking that the phones only have so
many times they can be charged but how that calculation is made I can't say.
As it is my phone is on almost all the time, I use it for all kinds of
things, never have location services on, and rarely have cellular data on
cause I do not have unlimited, and between reading, podcasts, calender, Tune
In, mail, and miscellaneous other apps, the phone has to be charged daily,
sometimes several times a day.
So is the battery in the iphone 6 the same as the 6S and is
it true that there is an advantage to keeping it plugged in all the time?

In music settings, there is an EQ or equilizer setting in there where you can
choose from different settings like more bass, more treble, or late night which
I th'k is the loudest one. The default is off. Remember, that this will have a

boosting the volume on music

2019-05-30 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Someone mentioned awhile ago a way to go into settings to boost the volume for
playing music. I can't remember what that was, does anyone else remember how to
do it?

Fiber glass won't do you much good as you can not see through it. On the other
hand, plexaglass would be fine.

Try this link to order the stand.

You'll need to write Mr. Wardega about the book reading aid; if you are
interested but it will not help hold down the corners of a single page. Nothing
does that as far as I know.

OK, below are two pages, the first one scanned with KNFB Reader, so it says
KNFB before the resulting file contents.

The second one is from Voice Dream Scanner, with VDS before the contents of the
file.

I did both as PDF documents.

Both were done on the Fopydo Scanning Stand.

This was done in my office room in our house with no lights on, so it was left
to the apps to deal with lighting.

Both had the flash on.

The phone never moved on the stand and the scans were taken about 1 minute
apart.

(toner+fuser). So "proprietary" doesn't have to mean expensive or hard to get.
Indeed, for the cost per page, the Brother has been exceptionally cheap, as we
often use aftermarket clones of the proprietary toner, and each toner cartridge
lasts us more than a year (with our inkjet printers, if we don't print
regularly, we waste a lot of ink clearing the heads ;<).

Accessibility is all over the map, and I'm not in a good position to evaluate
the various models. The relatively low cost MFC models (typically less than
$140) would appear to be a bit challenging on the accessibility front. But once
set up, probably pretty usable for most operations.

Scans are as good as originals for most purposes (but I have no idea how one
would be able to judge in an accessible fashion!). you hadn't mentioned a
particular weight goal, since you had spoken of printing and scanning, I
suggested their MFC (multi-function copier) series.

As for snapshots, while some of the apps do a fairly acceptable job, it's
fundamentally harder/less accurate to have to shoot at an angle and correct vs.
the scanner having a truly flat scan surface. So if you are trying to eliminate
paper, I'd go with a scanner.

if lightweight is critical, something like the Epson WorkForce ES-50 Portable
Scanner may do the trick.

If you have a lot of paper to convert, Epson and Fujitsu make duplex scanners
(that is, both sides of the page in one go). The Fujitsu ScanSnaps are highly
rated, but run about $400-500 (new). For full sized paper, these are easier to
use than flatbeds. However, if you are doing small paper (e.g. receipts) the
flatbeds may be easier. But before destroying the originals, someone should
verify that the scan is clear and readable ... and I have no idea how one would
do that in a properly accessible manner.

Book pages are probably most easily captured with a manual scanning device
(some are pretty inexpensive) but its pretty hard to ensure good results. I've
got a small vuepoint https://www.vupointsolutions.com/magic-wand which *can*
produce a good scan, but it takes good hand/eye coordination (and sometimes a
couple of tries) so I'd rate it as probably a bad bet w.r.t. accessibility.

Meanwhile an architect friend says get rid of all paper. digitize everything.
Are scans really that good or at least snapshots of anything you scan don't
lie, do they? It's only if you need accurate optical recognition where it gets
tricky.

Snaps usually can be spotted vs. a scanned image. If the goal is to have it
look as much like the original as possible ... I'd avoid snaps.

So, do you want/need a combined unit (printing/scanning)? Do you need color
(print? scan??). Can you get by with only the normal operations being
accessible? (having an assistant for the less common operations?). Do you have
a ton of existing paper to convert, or just a document or two infrequently? If
it's pretty infrequent, using a local Kinkos might not be a bad solution.

A lot of shows are broadcast live on YouTube and Tune-In Radio. Both can be
downloaded as Apps from the App store or you could go directly to the shows web
site. Facebook will also alert you to a particular person's show that is live
streaming at a certain hour if you want to be alerted that way, or tend to be
on Facebook a lot. It will provide the link to the live stream.
I no longer bother with downcast or overcast, I just use the native app on my
phone to see what is available and subscribe. It is perfectly manageable. And,
as someone already pointed out, podcasts are prerecorded and air at different
times.
For instance you can get Fresh Air and Democracy Now the same day they are
broadcast in your podcast app , but you won't get other shows, like the Rachel
Maddow show until the next morning or perhaps later that same evening. You
could however use Tune-In Radio and subscribe for free to MSNBC and live stream
any show that is on at any hour of the day.

Thank you, I knew I was missing something.
That makes perfect sense!

By definition, podcasts are pre-recorded. There is no listening to a podcast

RE: printers

2019-03-29 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Ugh. Just looking up the Brother printers which Keith recommended was an
ordeal. Some of the older models don't have proprietary cartridges but others
do. Some have touch screens, some scan, some weigh as much as 22 pounds. That
sure is not what I am looking for.

Meanwhile an architect friend says get rid of all paper. digitize everything.

The brother printers (say MFC27xx family) do a good job, have a low cost per
page and there's an app for "airprint" (generically it's got wifi and hardwire
ethernet).

I rather like Epson for color/photograph printing, but any inkjet costs more
per page than a "laser" printer, and the inkjets tend to clog if you don't
print regularly.

We've got more than 12 years from an older brother (5250DN) and the toner
cartridges are the same for the 2700 (low cost generic replacements work well
too).
