The sling tv app accessability:
I am considering the purchase of an air TV 2 unit for streaming the over the air local channels. This requires the use of the sling tv app. I haven't looked at that app in a few years. Are there accessibility issues with it? How usable is it really? In addition to the guide, is the DVR portion accessible? Thanks in advance. Phillo or Sling TV
Hi All: I'm thinking of switching from ATT TV streaming which is usable on Apple TV over iphone. to either Phillo or Sling. ATT went up on price and Phillo and Sling are cheaper. I'd use on my Apple TV, phone, or my future Roku. So which do you guys like better? Which is more usable? -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Sling TV and voiceover on the phone or Apple TV, any accessibility improvements?
Several months ago, I signed up for a trial of sling TV, which proved to be in accessible on the phone or the Apple TV, or the Amazon fire for that matter. The only place where it apparently has Accessibility is Roku. That was then. And you can’t sign up for another free trial if you’ve already had one, so I can’t just go back and try it again. Since we just dumped our satellite TV, I thought I would ask if anyone knows that is currently using sling TV on the Apple TV or phone, has the voiceover accessibility improved? Re: Sling TV and us.
Well, I’m glad it’s working again on the fire TV. I have the very same one that you do. And when I tried it a couple or three months ago, it didn’t work well at all. I couldn’t tell what I was on. It was a real mess. I really wanted it to work, because I really wanted to get pack 12 TV. It’s not available on DIRECTV unfortunately. Oh well. Maybe next year. Mary, I have the Tosheba Fire TV with Alexa built-in, 41 or 43 inch. I tried using both this week. Again, I found that the Fire TV would identify the channels, what was on and even the items which one could access if you did not wish to watch live TV. I found this especially useful when dealing with TCM, Turner Classic Movies and other movie channels, not the premium channels, but the ones which come with a subscription to either Sling Orange or Sling Blue. An addendum to this is that in some cases, like Ted TV which is available from the list of apps which one can use with the Fire tTV and also VH1 that although one can open them, they are not necessarily functional. That is to say that one can not access the information within some of these apps. This is also true of Tune-in for the Fire TV and also Ted for the Fire TV. For me, Directvnow is a better service as far as accessibility is concerned. The only issue I have with Directvnow is once I create a list of favorites, I can’t find the favorites list feature. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: Sling TV.
Yes I have both on the iPhone and Apple TV. I can’t say that I’m a fan of it either way. To me, Directvnow is far more accessible. But even it has some drawbacks. For instance, you can favor a channel. But, I have yet to be able to find my favorites. Even though I’m critical of Sling, I will stay with it because the monthly investment is small and I’m hopeful that it will become more accessible. Re: Sling tv
Well, I didn't know that. This is good to know. Although, I think dish network is less accessible than DirecTV. But I could be wrong about this. I had DirecTV for a while, several years back. But I've never had dish TV. So anyone's input on how accessible ditch is, would be good to know. That might tell us a lot as to what to do concerning sling TV, if we do anything. RE: Sling tv
Hi Terri and others, Apparently this access is important to you so why not take up the cause and try to get Sling TV to make this more accessible. This may of course involve more than an email via some feedback form or support email, you should find out who is CEO of this company and a few other high level positions, then write an actual letter, print it out and mail it via registered mail to Sling TV. This way the letter needs to be signed for and it will be taken more seriously. Keep a journal or log of when you send it and if you receive any replies and when, of course keep copies of all correspondence and if there is no reply try and take it up with maybe the NFB or whatever other organisations you have, maybe see if you find an investigative journalist who would champion this. Here in Canada our CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) has a team called "Go Public". You can send in information about your issue/fight and if they take it they'll write an article in the national news, make calls and contact the involved parties. Recently they had the story of a mother who had bought accidentl insurance for her child. The girl was now I think 12 or so and basically lost the use of one eye in a sports accident. The policy stated there should have been a $50,000 payout, but of course there was fine print which allowed the insurance company to get out of it (so they thought) and they sent the mother a cheque for $8.40 to cover gas and milage for trips to the hospital. A few days after the Go Public article came out there was a follow-up article saying that hundreds of clients of said insurance company had called in to cancel their policies, it was all over social media and a few days after that it was reported that the mother and insurance company had settled, the amount was not disclosed but the mother said it was a satisfactory result, the insurance company apologized and said it was their goal to provide the best possible service and so on and so on. This goes to show the power of the media and especially social media once something hits Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is of course a lot of work and any letter you write must be unfailingly polite, objective and give the company (Sling TV) a chance to investigate and respond, it is a lot of work, but depending on what your work is and how much time you have it can produce real results. If nobody ever did these sorts of things and advocated for whatever cause or group we wouldn't be where we are now in terms of accessibility and acceptance of various disabilities and minority groups. I'm not saying we live in a perfect time, we are far from that, but after all not that long ago women and black people couldn't even vote let along run for the office of President of the United States. That doesn't sound too bad coming from a spot where the cable box guide gives us nothing at all to work with because it doesn't talk. At least the work arounds should be consistent, at least until an update is done. Work is sort of like that too in one of the main programs I use, except with the Jaws cursor, the results get inconsistent in that parts get cut off, and it's usually the option I need. It might do it rarely, and then one day, it might happen every other call, and I have to get someone to scroll the screen for me. I like it that with Apple, at least most of the time, you can always get to everything, or at least a consistent result you can work around. - Original Message - From: "Terri Stimmel" <icecreamlove...@outlook.com> To: <viphone@googlegroups.com> Sent: Sunday, November 13, 2016 10:17 AM Subject: Re: Sling tv Hi Kliphton, No, it's not the way to have to do it. I heard the speculation on Twitter that suggested that DirecTV Now could come any week now, the articles suggested by the end of November. Another one I'm watching out for is a newcomer called VidGo, whose selling point seems to be being able to have the local channels as well. The guy I talked with suggested that pricing would be competetive with the other offerings around, but it either isn't known yet or varies by area. - Original Message - From: "Kliphton Miller" <kliph...@icloud.com> To: <viphone@googlegroups.com> Sent: Saturday, November 12, 2016 9:56 PM Subject: Re: Sling tv I tried it, and it is usable depending on how much patients you have, and if you are willing to try different methods. Now, the channels weren’t read by voiceover, but I went threw the channels with my sited children, and wrote down the ones I wanted to remember in a note on my iPhone. After going threw them a few times, I remember what each one was. So, if I wanted to watch TBS, I knew it was 14 of 67, if I wanted to watch oxygen, I knew it was 34 of 67, and if I wanted to watch USA, I knew it was 18 of 67. a little getting use to, but that method worked for me. I have heard this more than once. But I was curious to try it out, because they offer a 7 day trial. I had a little bit of a problem getting my account set up on the website, so I called the phone number. The man I talked to was nice, but he really did seem rather shocked, when I told him I was totally blind. I informed him that I tried to sign up on the site, but that it wouldn't let me submit my information. He told me that this can happen, because their site gets over-loaded right now, with people trying to sign up. He said for some reason, it had accepted my password. That was interesting! So I got all set up, and I went and installed Sling on my Apple tv. I was hoping it would work, though I had my doubts. It doesn't work! I could easily sign in. But once I was signed in, I didn't get any sort of feedback. So I touched the gesture area, and that got a response. Sadly, I could see the menu. But anything I tried to enter on, would not come up. I really think, and feel that if they would just put some effert in to this product, it wouldn't be too difficult to make it more accessible. I mean, I know nothing about making a product accessible. But you can read the menu. So how hard can it be? I decided to install the App for my computer. That experience was worse than my Apple tv. When I open the program, it's as though there is nothing there at all. There isn't even a way to sign in. I just thought I would share my thoughts, and experiences with you all. Hi Bob, Kliphton, and list, Yes Bob, I will be able to cancel my subscription. I made sure of this. Or I mean, trial. I asked the man on the phone yesterday, that if for some reason I couldn't cancel online, could I call and cancel. He told me yes there would be no problem with that, and that I could even email them. So I feel pretty good about this. The sad thing is, both people I have dealt with from that company, have been very nice, and polite. They try to be helpful. But they are ignorant in a lot of ways. I don't said that to be rude, just speaking the truth. For instance, when I called last night to see where I could find a listing of channels, I got a very nice man on the phone. He wanted to be helpful. I told him that I was blind, and he didn't seemed as shocked as the first guy who had helped me set up my account. However, when I told him that I wanted to hopefully find a listing of channels. He told me this was possible. I asked him where to go and he said, after you see a few pictures, keep going down a bit, and you will see a link for channels, and packages. Something like that anyway. I decided to not repeat that I was blind, and that I wouldn't see the pictures. I played around with the site, and I did find where I could view the channel listings. It of course doesn't give you a number. But you can find out what is available, and what package it is in. I found this all works better with Firefox, rather than Internet Explorer for some reason. And Kliphton, Fox is channel 1 on mine as well. I think channel 4, or 5 is Fox Midwest, as I ended up watching a little bit of a hockey game. That was cool! I asked my roommate when he got home last night, if he would go through the channels with me, and he said yes. So I am excited about this. Re: Sling tv
The key question is - are you going to be able to cancel this within that 7 day trial theyoffer? Offering it is one thing, honouring it is quite another. I presume they have your card or bank details to play with in the meantime? BobH. - Original Message - From: "Terri Stimmel" <icecreamlove...@outlook.com> To: <viphone@googlegroups.com> Sent: Sunday, November 13, 2016 12:44 AM Subject: Sling tv Hello everyone, I have heard that Sling tv is not accessible. Even if many of you already knew all this. Thank you, Terri -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Hi Kliphton, It's under guide. I played around with it, and found the channels. Of course, like you mentioned, it doesn't say what they are. But it lists the numbers, and says when I am on one. It says, sellected. I can get the channels to play, so far. I signed up for the blue, and orange package. I would like to know what the orange extra package is, if I plan to keep this. By the way, apparently, channel 1 is FX. I'm sorry you have been dealing with a loss, and a funeral. Thank you for your help with this. If you think of anything else, please let me know. Re: Sling tv
Hello Kliphton, and list, Ok, I decided to play with the Sling TV one more time. I wasn't planning on it. I had actually un-installed it. So I had to re-install it. I had some trouble signing in, which I didn't before. So I found that to be a bit odd. Anyway, I couldn't find a watch now option. I found my tv, on now, search, settings, and possibly something else. I just can't remember what it was. But I know for sure it wasn't watch now. Here is where things get interesting. I went in to the on now. I slid my finger down, and I was shocked to hear programs being announced. Now I think I could go left and right as well. But I don't remember for sure. It would tell me the name of the show, but not if it was a movie, or a show. Some of it was obvious. It would tell me the tv rating, the start time, but unfortunately not the channel. Also, when I entered on an option, not sure if it was a movie, it did come up. Once it came up, I learned it was an episode of Nashville. I just found this interesting, and thought that I would pass this on. I think I will fiddle around with it a bit more. I wish the website offered a list of channels. But I don't think they do. I have heard this more than once. But I was curious to try it out, because they offer a 7 day trial. I tried it, and it is usable depending on how much patients you have, and if you are willing to try different methods. Watch now wasn’t accessible, adding favorites wasn’t accessible, but if you go in to watch now, there is a list of channels from left to right. Re: Sling tv
Hi mama peach, I totally agree with you really. It wasn't that I was not trying to listen to what other people had to say. I guess I was just hopeful. I'm missing not having some certain cable channels, so I just really wanted something to work. Luckily, I really did not cause myself any stress. I was disappointed it didn't work. But nothing more than that. Plus, I didn't spend any money. So that made a huge difference. Now if I had spent money and it hadn't listened to what others had said, I would've really been upset with myself But I just took the free trial, and I gave it a shot. It didn't work. So now I have to decide what I want to do. I don't mind not having cable. I really don't. If I could find a way to watch some stuff that I really would like to watch in other ways, I just do that. I don't mind helping antenna TV type stuff. Well over the air. I already canceled my free trial. So all is good. Thank you for your advice though, and your thoughts. I appreciate them as always. Yes Andy, you are so right. LOL! I think that is why the man on the phone sounded so shocked, when I mentioned I was blind. So many people say I listen to tv. That really gets to me. Sling tv
Hello everyone, I have heard that Sling tv is not accessible. Re: sling tv phone number, call to action.
Well, it's a good idea. But there are not hundreds of thousands of people waiting for them to make their app accessible with voiceover. There are, simply put, not hundreds of thousands of people using voice over in the US. Greetings, I have just been on the phone with Sling TV concerning their lack of access with voice-over. The person I spoke with had no idea what Voice-over was. sling TV questions.
I'm re-asking because I can't seem to get a straight answer(s) so let me try again. 1. Is the Sling TV app usable with Voice-over on the 4th generation Apple TV? 2. Is the list of channels readable on the 4th generation Apple TV? 3. Are the individual channel listings (that is to say) what is on each channel) accessible on the 4th generation Apple TV? If you have a general idea of what a channel carries it is possible to find the programming you desire. This is being used by me on 4th generation apple tv. Sling tv is the sling app accesible:
I am posting for a friend who is not subscribed to the list. He signed up for a 7 day free trial of sling tv. slingtv.com which allows you to listen to some tv stations without a sling box. You can listen on your computer or iPhone or android device for a monthly fee. He seems to find that changing channels in the app does not work and the oly way to do it is to use the search feature which gets annoying after a while. Anyone confirm this?
