ATT will do it for free provided it's off contract and no money is owed.

Yes, that's also my understanding, the 3GS will not support the upgrade to
IOS 7, which will be a deal breaker for selling the phone.

Hi Kay,
The 4S came out in October 2011, so about 2 months shy of 2 years. You
wwould have to give some more
of the 4 and just used it instead.
Maybe I'll try to see if ATT will unlock my 4S, just to see if they will.

If the phone is no longer part of a contract, att may unlock it for
you, you have nothing to lose by asking them. The way the iphone is
officially unlocked is a bit different than other phones. With most
phones, if you insert a sim card that the phone is not supposed to use,
you can enter a
IOS 6 will be the last update for it, and even with that, it does not
have all features. And, IOS 6 is a bit slow on it.

Hello Sean,
There are still going to be a lot of people out there who want to buy a
cheap 3GS with iOS 6 even if they can't upgrade to iOS 7. iOS 6 is a very
advanced and stabil mobile platform and a lot

Oh, I'd agree there will be some people who will most certainly be
interested. However, the over all point I was making is that I don't think
whether it is locked or unlocked will make that much
$10 for it.

Hi.
I have an iPhone 4 that was with ATT. The contract was over with the phone
for a while, so I decided to call them up to unlock it. I had no problems
doing this, and it didn't cost me anything. The phone is now on T-Mobile's
network, and it works great.
Just for your information.

Sean,
It will make all the difference in the world. If I were considering a used
iPhone 3GS, 4 or even 4S, I would never in a thousand years want to buy a
phone which was not already carrier unlocked. The resale value will be
accordingly higher
