Something is seriously wrong with the Samantha voice. Sounds like she had a
very bad operation and it didn't go well. OS9 was not kind to her. Samantha
sounds like she has an extreme case of laryngitis. She absolutely sounds awful!
I guess we will have to learn to live with Siri, because living with Samantha
is absolutely impossible.

Re: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-22 Thread Gmail
Oh, good. I actually prefer Karen over Samantha in compact mode, but only in
iOS 7. In iOS 8, I prefer the compact version of Samantha over Karen. To my
ears, at least, Karen sounds different between iOS 7 and 8. In iOS eight, Karen
seems to have taken over some qualities of her noncompact form, which drives me
crazy.

Thanks,
Ari

I have found the compact voice to be unchanged, so I just continue to use that.
The full version does sound very odd, but so far, compact is okay.

OK,thenI guess Andrew must have been looking in the wrong spot. If you read
this, Andrew, make sure you go into Voiceover settings and then Speech and not
the Speech option in the main accessibility settings. Once you are there you
can either add US English as another language which allows you to leave
Samanthas as the default dialect and you can select/download either male or
female SIRI once you added US English and then use the rotor to go to Language
and change it on the fly.

Re: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-21 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Shawn,

I have upgraded to iOS9 on iphone 5C. Does this also make it possible to use
siri voice as the default voice for VoiceOver? I've looked under speech in
accessibility in settings and also under siri but I can't see an option to do
this. Maybe iphone 5C is not capable to utilise siri voice as VoiceOver voice.

RE: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If it could they would be available if you to to Settings > Accessibility >
Voiceover > Speech > Default Dialect. If they are not there then like Alex the
SIRI voices are most likely only available on 64 Bit devices which the iPhone 5
and 5C are not. The oldest device where this would be available would be the
5S, also the 6 and 6 Plus and, of course, the new 6S and 6S Plus which are
available this Friday.

RE: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-21 Thread Rose Combs
Currently I am running Siri female the larger on my phone, not sure if it uses
Kindle or not but was reading my Bible from Kindle very well. I was also
reading an iBook yesterday and with the rate at 55 to 60 I actually could hear
it better than Alex, even though I think I still prefer Alex. Figured I'd give
it a try at least.

Male Siri although okay for asking questions was not at all easy to listen to
when reading long passages.

I probably will get Alex back soon, but figured it was worth a try not to have
to listen to Samantha who I have never cared for.

Re: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-21 Thread Gmail
Trippy! I like her better in compact mode then non-compact mode, and I also
like her iOS 7 incarnation better than her iOS 8 one. She's too… I don't know,
shaky… In high-quality rmode. So is Samantha, for that matter. I like a human
sounding voice, yes, but one that's smoother in the transitions between words.
As an example, I'd have to say my favorite Voice is Kate from NeoSpeech. I use
her on Voice Dream Reader all the time, and I hardly ever switch to anything
else.

Thanks,
Ari

2015-09-21 Thread Rose Combs
I tried Seri female advanced. I want Alex back, but for some reason going to
settings, general, speech voices says Alex is selected but he is not talking.
I tried and Seri is okay but I thought Alex read a bet better. I would like
him back and Hey Seri is being a real silly person sending me to an optical
store, then to voice-over for the mac, I don't have a mac and I just way the
only man in my life back.

Did you configure the Siri voices to work with your default dialect or did you
use a secondary language for it? Also, check if you downloaded them through the
speech setting by itself in accessibility. I saw someone did that and wondered
why it wasn't working for them but then they realized that they downloaded it
in the wrong place so it wasn't showing up in Voiceover.

2015-09-21 Thread Myrna Votta
Since I have an iPhone and and an iPad Air, I upgraded to IOS 9 on both
devices. I also chose the Siri enhanced US female voice for both of them.
But, the strange thing is that, although both voices sound alike, their quality
and intonation is very different. When they read the home screens they read
them alike, but, when I used them in the Kindle app, they were very different.
Siri on my iPhone 6 had good intonation and was very expressive; however, on
the iPad, she did not pronounce words as well and she did not pause after
either a comma nor a period. I wonder why there should be such a difference
between Siri on the iPhone and Siri on the iPad?

Yeah I like the Siri voices for Voiceover too. I alternate between Gordon, the

really care for the American siri voices, Aaron and Nicky, because Nicky has

Re: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-20 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
I know the names of the voices because you can use them with NVDA. That's why I
wish Apple would release them for OS X but that's a different topic for a
different list.

Glad I read your message first, I was about to write one along the same lines,
then I cancelled it because I thought why add more traffic to the list, but
after I read your message I thought I also ask. I even Googled this and found
references as to the real people whose voices are behind SIRI, e.g. the female
US SIRI voice is based on Susan Bennett, but I didn't come across Aaron and
Nicky anywhere.

Re: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-20 Thread Alan Paganelli
Wow, I feel sorry for her husband. Can you picture asking your phone a
question and it's your wife who replies and everybody and their sister is
talking to your wife! I've heard some of the NLS talking book narrators
speaking normally and it's pretty wird. I think the recording I have is of
Jack Fox. So I can picture iPhone sounding like Susan as a real person.

Re: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-20 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Did you configure the Siri voices to work with your default dialect or did you
use a secondary language for it? Also, check if you downloaded them through the
speech setting by itself in accessibility. I saw someone did that and wondered
why it wasn't working for them but then they realized that they downloaded it
in the wrong place so it wasn't showing up in Voiceover.

RE: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Glad I read your message first, I was about to write one along the same lines,
then I cancelled it because I thought why add more traffic to the list, but
after I read your message I thought I also ask. I even Googled this and found
references as to the real people whose voices are behind SIRI, e.g. the female
US SIRI voice is based on Susan Bennett, but I didn't come across Aaron and
Nicky anywhere.

Regards,
Sieghard

Right. Can I ask, how the hell do you know the names of the Siri voices?
Because on my iOS devides at least, all I get is "Siri Male", "Siri Female" etc.

That's because Aaron and Nicky are the new Siri voices and Susan Bennett was
the old voice of Siri but still is the voice of Samantha.

Re: Siri voice for voice over

2015-09-20 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Yes these voices are indeed made by Nuance. The names of the new Siri voices
for English are Nicky and Aaron, US English, Gordon and Catherine, Australian
English, and Martha and Arthur for British English. I don't think they made new
voices for other languages so whatever foreign voice you have for Voiceover
will be your Siri voice as well.

I thought Susan Bennett was the real person behind the Samantha boys.

Thanks,
