When the iPad appears in left sidebar, select it.
Backups : select 'this computer' - click 'Back Up Now'
After it completes backup you should see under - Latest Backup:

Basically what you have said is correct.
Open iTunes Preferences - Devices - then under Devices delete the last backup
(which you did ) of the new iPhone today - then Click Ok.
Connect your iPhone - Then select your iPhone under Library - Devices

My iTunes mystery is solved. Yes, it was a corruption of my account with stray
items ( in fact 14 nice operatic arias) waiting to download but not ordered or
paid for by me. On receiving my authorisation an Apple support helper cleared
them. All fine now but no explanation of how it happened

Hi Ronni, back here now and I tried the instructions below to create a new
network connection. This was pretty easy and worked successfully. iTunes opens
up, can see iTunes store fine, web sites fine, but still no WiFI synch of IOS
devices.

• When the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS
device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it. The iOS device will sync
automatically when the following conditions are true:
• The iOS device is charging.
• iTunes is open on the computer

The issue I am seeing is consistent with many users on the Apple Support site
reflecting. I'm sure it is something simple to be toggled or reset.
The next iTunes update or iOS update will probably correct it, even if it isn't
one of the reported bugs noted as corrected.

I have iPhone and iPad but gave only been trying this with iPhone thus far.
Could that be a difference? It is the latest iTunes I've got.
I read a lot of online correspondence in the Apple
phone, did synch, check
that wifi synch this device. Allowed that to complete this pull plug on
iPhone, immediately it disappears from the devices list.

On your iPhone Settings General - iTunes Wi-Fi Sync ... Can you 'Sync Now'.

Launch “Activity Monitor” (found in /Applications/Utilities/)
Use the search box in the upper right corner and search for
“AppleMobileDeviceHelper”
