Re: iMac Problem - hardware?
The problem has been fixed - it was a faulty hard drive that was messing up the whole system. Thanks to the Joondalup store for sorting this out and organising the replacement. Try starting in Verbose Mode (cmd-V) at startup. this starts the computer normally, but displays the boot process on the screen as the various resources are loaded. Re: Why doesn't Address Book sync on two Macs ?
Steven, Is the Contact you have made in Address Book on the iBook, reflected in your online MobileMe Account under Contacts? i.e.: Has it synced to MobileMe online cloud-servers? I just had a quick look at Apple discussions and sounds like you are not the only person having sync issues at the moment. Apparently Apple Engineers are aware of the problem and they'll fix it, eventually. Some people have had success Resetting their sync data. NB. If you try this make sure you have a backup first as resetting your sync data deletes all the synchronised data from the other location. You can just replace 'Contacts' in the Reset Sync Data - Replace pop- up menu, if that is the only problem sync you are experiencing. I have not experienced any problems syncing to my devices or my computer, but some people have. http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957start=0 This is worth a read: http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/02/25/how-to-truly-reset-your-mac-sync-data Cheers, Ronni On 09/11/2008, at 3:59 PM, Steven Knowles wrote: Thanks Ronni. This is the problem though - I add the contact on the iBook, do a manual Sync (several times now), but still the new contact does not reflect on the MBP, despite having also forced a manual sync on the MBP also. Just checked the MBP again - still no contact added. That's why I'm thinking there must be something else. If however I add a contact on the iBook, and Sync the iBook, and then sync the MBP as well, I just don't see the added contact in Address Book from the MBP. I've checked and double checked all the settings in the MobileMe system prefs. Contacts is ticked in the Sync panel of each Mac, and everything else looks fine. Any other clues as to what might be the cause? Hi Steven, When you add a Contact in Address Book on the G4 iBook your computer does not send that data immediately to the MobileMe servers. At best, your computer checks in with MobileMe once every 15 minutes (unless you sync it manually)—and in some cases the delay is much longer. You should see the added contact on the MBP eventually, but not straight away. MobileMe does push sync, but it's not push from end to end - yet! Apple has indicated that we should expect push updates from Computers to the cloud at some point in the future, but for the time being, it's only push from the cloud down. Re: Drowse or Sleep?
Hi Severin Mike, Usually it is an external USB or FireWire peripheral that causes sleep problems, or in a majority of cases it has been a software issue with either drivers and / or software to peripherals ... mainly printers. OR Short on RAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776?viewlocale=en_USlocale=en_AU You could try this: Set an aggressive sleep time of a few minutes, have a look at Activity Monitor and see if there are 3rd party background processes for peripherals that you can eliminate. Eliminate one and see if it goes to sleep. Repeat till it sleeps as that should be the offending process. If that process launches through your user's login items, maybe it doesn't have to. Another place to look would be in the offending application's preferences. Cheers, Ronni On 09/11/2008, at 5:01 PM, Mike Fuller wrote: Likewise, my G5 2.0 DP won't sleep without manual intervention. Re: Drowse or Sleep?
Hi Severin, Some programmes perform periodic activity which (intentionally or not) will restart your Mac's time-to-sleep timer. For example, downloading a large file will prevent your disk from going to sleep and thus prevent your computer from going to sleep. Continuous file sharing and internet chat logging can have this effect also, despite the fact that you have walked away from your computer. Severin, if you close all your apps and leave the computer for 10 mins, does it go to sleep? I imagine it won't, but if it DOES, then you should try to identify which programme is the culprit. But I looked at what you said and can see that it would be the way to go if I needed it. I guess what is confusing me is that even though it is connected, its icon is not appearing on the desktop. With one of my Mac clients, their server's icon appears on the desktop when connected. Mine is not strictly speaking a server, though, just a shared device. Re: Mac OS Error Result Code = -51
Thanks James I did Google, but used the actual error code, mentioning -51. It didn't appear in the first 10 pages and I thought it might not appear in the next 100 or so either since I specifically asked for that one. Can I still use the repair disk bizzo seeing as it is connected to my router rather than my computer itself? Re: MYOB Backup Query
Hi Daniel I am glad to be able to return the favour and give an answer to this one! It is a bug in this version of AccountEdge. It is due to the installer not giving the correct permissions to the MYOB AccountEdge v8 sub folders and contents. Solution: Locate the AccountEdge 8 folder do a Command I on it to see the Get Info stuff. Expand the Sharing Permissions if it is not already expanded. Click on the padlock on the bottom right corner of that box to unlock it and enter administrator id password if requested. Change all users to have read AND write permissions. Click on the sunflower icon to the left of the padlock and choose apply to enclosed items. Click on the padlock to lock it up again. All is well again. This is a problem only if you choose Backup All Data. If you choose Backup Datafile Only, it will create a successful backup. Further to this, I agree with a couple comments made re using other backup methods. I always recommend doing a straight copy in the finder from HD to a USB thumb drive thingy or whatever they want to be called these days. For some/many users, if this is their only back up, and they do not direct it elsewhere off the HD, then if their computer is irretrievably damaged/lost, they have no backup because MYOB's default backup location is on the hard drive! Also with a straight copy, the file is not compressed, so it is a straight copy back if needed. I have recently started to do a MYOB backup to the hard drive as a secondary backup and in the situation where I have just done one or two transactions. MYOB will be fixing this up and sending a patch out eventually. Re: Why doesn't Address Book sync on two Macs ?
Just checked Ronni - no, the iBook Address Book addition wasn't appearing in Contacts in the online MobileMe account. I've just gone through all the Reset Sync Data and it does appear to have fixed the problem, so thanks heaps for that suggestion. I should have thought of it myself, because I think I've been down that route before when my iPhone wasn't syncing properly. I forgot about that fix - it's buried so deep within the bowels of System Prefs. Thanks again! Alex, I realise that you have not got a computer set up as a server, I just had this idea that the difference between a network drive (which is always available to any computer on the network) and a firewire or USB drive (which relies on the computer it is connected to to implement the sharing of the drive) - meant that the enclosure had essentially a basic server circuit/software built in. Other more knowledgeable minds could probably clarify this :) Cheers Neil -- Neil R. MP3 - file repair tips?
Background: I have just been downloading some pretty obscure music. The files download as .rar archives (sometimes in more than one part) and I have been using Zipeg http://www.zipeg.com/ to unarchive the downloads. This has been working fine and I have had no problems with the unarchiving or importing the files into iTunes - with just one exception. The album unarchived OK and I can see all 23 tracks along with the included artwork. However there seems to be a problem with two of the tracks (#20 #23), relevant points are: 1) - if I look at the folder in finder, all the other tracks show the artwork as the track icon, whereas the problem two show the generic mp3 icon 2) - quicklook will play the tracks with no problem as will audion 3 3) - if I add the album to the itunes library the problem tracks do not get listed, all the other tracks are listed and play fine. 4) - if I right click the file and select open with iTunes, nothing happens - it seems that iTunes does not recognize these two files as legitimate mp3 files. 5) - If I drag the files into a Audio CD in Toast, the problem files are not added (message xxx was not added, because it is not a sound file, or is not in supported format.) the others are added OK. 6) - if I get info on the files they are correctly shown as mp3 audio files but they seem to have some metadata different/missing compared to the working files (genre is other, author is OK, title is missing, album is missing, last opened date is different) 7) - I tried changing the metadata tags using MP3 ID3X http://www.three-2-one.com/321apps/main/global/index1.htm The tags were successfully changed but iTunes Toast still didn't recognise the files. 8) - The files play in Audion 3 and if I encode them to mp3 then itunes toast recognise them fine - however re-encoding an mp3 file to mp3 is obviously not my prefered solution! After some googling, I came upon a blog: http://trevinchow.com/blog/2008/09/17/fix-for-mp3-songs-not-playing-in-itun es/ which discussed a similar problem and said: After quite a few more days of troubleshooting and experimenting, I finally stumbled upon the solution. It turns out that the MP3s that wouldn¹t play had out of spec MPEG headers, which I verified and repaired using a freeware tool called MP3 Validator. I checked out MP3 Validator: http://www.gromkov.com/faq/repair/mp3_validator.html Which looked very promising - except that it is Windows only :( Because the files sound to play just fine, I suspect that the problem is indeed in the other info around it headers/metadata whatever and that the file just needs cleaning up So, I am now considering my options: 1) Just encode with audion 3: I know this works but it takes some time and I guess reduces the quality by trying to compress an already compressed file - so this is not a prefered option. 2) Fire up parallels, download install MP3 Validator and give that a go: The software looks like it should at least highlight the problem(s) with the file and probably fix it - its just that I try and keep windows use to an absolute minimum and I'm worried that this might introduce new problems. 3) Try and find an OSX equivalent to MP3 Validator: I found a feew tag editors - but that didn't fix the problem. So far I can see no equivalent to MP3 Validator. So, has anyone out there found/seen/heard of an equivalent program - or had fixed a similar problem? I would really hate to think that the only way to solve the problem of iTunes not handling a (presumably) slightly damaged file was to turn to Windows! TIA Neil -- Neil R. Re: iTunes 8 - CD unmounts when importing
Hi Neil, OK, one last try to correct this problem of Importing CD's unmounting in iTunes 8.0.1. ;o) From what I can find out searching the Internet, It seems that cleaning of the Previous iTunes Libraries is the solution. Download install Onyx v.1.9.9 for Leopard OSX 10.5. or later: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html 1. Under Maintenance tab, Rebuild subtab, click the following checkboxes: LaunchServices and dyld's shared cache and then run the Execute button. 2. Under Cleaning tab, System had everything checked, User had everything but Audio Units checked, Internet had the first four items checked (Browsers Cache, Download Cache, Browsers History, Recent Searches), Fonts had only System and Users checked, Logs had only Log Files, System Archived Logs, and CrashReporter Logs checked, and finally Misc had everything checked including Previous iTunes Libraries and then run Execute again. Most of those checkboxes were already selected (mostly by default). It seems that the cleaning of the Previous iTunes Libraries is the solution. Re: x264 Exporting in EyeTV
Thanks for the reply Bob. I did try the H.264 encode option in EyeTV but it would take around 6-7 hours to complete 30 minutes of video on my 1.8 GHz G5. x264 is a version of H.264 that is believed to provide better quality, speed and compression in comparison to Apple's H.264. For anyone interested I ended up using Handbrake which uses x264 and suits my purposes much better since i can pause the encode and que different encodes. There's alot of different things to configure so if anyone tries this and finds it a bit daunting send me an email and I'll try to give you a hand (I read up on everything). Re: iTunes 8 - CD unmounts when importing
Hi Alex, No, they were all just Audio CDs bought from the shop! I'm hoping it's not a drive problem, it feels like it's more to do with the process though - in each case the CD is initially recognised, the track data is successfully imported from gracenotes CDDB and I am asked if I want to import the CD - so no disc/drive problem to that point. Then either hitting the yes button just works - or I have to use disc utility to mount the CD (which is still showing up- just as unmounted). Again, in every case, the re-mounted CD just imports fine. Ah well, in time, we will see if Ronni's suggestion has fixed the problem. Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Re: Drowse or Sleep?
Hi again Susan, If turning off Enable Firewall Logging doesn't solve your sleep issue (as suggested in my previous email). Try System Preferences Energy Saver - Sleep and uncheck Put the Hard Disk(s) to sleep when possible. Let's hope one of these allows you to see the soft pulsating glow of the white LED indicating your G5 is asleep. Try going into System Preferences Security Firewall - click Advanced and turn OFF (take the tick out) Enable Firewall logging. See if your G5 will sleep now. This is unique to this computer - in my case a G5 1.8 SP, and I know its unique because of using a wide range of Macs. I can live with it, but thought it useful to share with Severin that this it might just be a quirk on these computers. Yes, although I am going to try the things that Ronni suggested when we get back from China. Did you look at Finder preferences to confirm you have a tick in the appropriate box Bob With one of my Mac clients, their server's icon appears on the desktop when connected. Mine is not strictly speaking a server, though, just a shared device. If it hasn't shown up anyway in your network, then browse possibly won't see it so put in the server (drive) ethernet address and hit connect. Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Re: New page in Word 2008
Hi Severin What do you want Word 2008 to do each time you start it? Mine goes to the Project Gallery. If you want to set it to open in Project Gallery, go to File - Project Gallery - Settings. There are a few options there.
