Re: [WAMUG} iMac random restarts

The only drive I have ever had fail is the fusion drive replaced under warranty
many years ago. But ... thank goodness for good backup routine.

Good description of problem and solution.

Thank you!

 Good morning,

After a couple of days of no random freezes I’m becoming confident a
solution has appeared. The initial problem I feel was RAM being moved a

I focused on testing RAM one stick at a time and moving it around into
various bays. Plus resetting PRAM, SMC, reinstalling the OS from recovery,
held D on restart for a test process to commence, but still the freezes
 would come.

One thing I didn’t do very well was the restarting procedure. I don’t
normally have to restart the iMac, so wasn’t familiar with how long to
hold the power button for. Once I read on the Apple support description on
 adding RAM
"Your iMac performs a memory initialisation procedure when you first turn
it on after upgrading memory or rearranging DIMMs. This process can take
30 seconds or more, and the display of your iMac remains dark until it's
finished. Make sure you let the memory initialisation complete.”

I realised I had probably been interrupting this. I then held the power
button for about half a second to get it going and walked away until it
did it’s thing and bingo, the iMac has stayed running correctly.

 Simple really….. :-)

 Thanks

Re: [WAMUG} Carbon Copy Cloner 6 releeased

2021-05-23 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Thanks for the heads up Daniel. Seems like a great upgrade. I have only ever
had to save from a catastrophic failure of a hard drive with no warning once in
my life but CCC had me with a bootable backup to keep going and then an easy
restore when the hard drive was replaced and I have never had the “lost
all of my precious photos” regrets.

I like time machine but in its now superseded form a lot quicker.

Perhaps a comparison of the benefits of using one or the other or both backups
could be a nice WAMUG presentation.

Re: [WAMUG} New M1 Mac Mini - read this before buying

2021-02-01 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hmm

Some years ago I had this problem (and with airdrop still have it) with my late
2013 iMac.

Very, very frustrating.

Eventually I paid for a replacement airport card, but that didn’t fix it.

Problem went away with an OS update some months after problem started (although
airdrop still very disappointing).

Re: TC Backups to a full disc drive

2020-10-09 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi Peter

Presently I run two drives connected to my iMac (one by Thunderbolt, one by
USB) one backing up a time machine backup and one using Carbon Copy Cloner
software to make another backup. I swap out one of the drives from time to
time and keep that drive at a separate location.

I have only had one hard drive fail and that was the “fusion” drive in this
iMac. It was very very handy to have a backup to hand when the iMacs drive was
replaced.

However, I would like to go wireless for backup, my only attempt being just to
add a usb connected drive to a Time Capsule (for a second backup to the Time
Capsule itself), but I found it to be too slow.

One idea for a monthly meeting topic I would be interested in, is a home
network guru providing a guide to running wireless backups to multiple backup
drives and whether that requires / is better with a NAS (which I don’t really
understand) or via hard drives connected to a wireless router with a fast USB
connection.

Hi Peter

That is good news.

On a side note I gave up using hard drives connected via usb to the TC because
they were very slow to transfer data. I read somewhere that this is because the

Using late 2013 iMac as a screen for a thunderbolt 3 ported PC laptop

2020-08-20 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi all

I have a work pc with thunderbolt 3 ports which I can use to drive a LG
UltraFine 5K Display

https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/HMUB2X/A/lg-ultrafine-5k-display?fnode=5cbba005c212c0bd4a1b3508e7106d2e7030cb026fedd6b867046cfb3c547747f408e67eabf4a925575044e70e50c3bf75005783464b9081deb466c68b00b22cda0a0852fa6035ba11d52d0885e24f4eb4f8123c9b47b49f874d99900325fdb2afe64e9cc82cb523b8449b1012e1d58c

But the display is not always available to me and so I thought I would try
running my late 2013 iMac running MacOS Catalina as a monitor as per:

https://www.techjunkie.com/how-to-use-an-imac-as-a-monitor-for-pc/

I have the:

Thunderbolt 2 cable; and
Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter,

https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter?fnode=758957dba5e4e005989a835a436e7642c8374943a0d49264649ec078faf37eb3c552500b4e0d15c5a7cefb7a261fe8144b966a37067f3582f7487ed359e1a8a0287ee35e593d6e1d6850dcc5c31104377132a9be3b7e4b835fd6c487f245bc7374591088408930968a504afe03ad9f91

and followed the instructions of holding command-F2 (or command-option F2) at
startup on the iMac using its original keyboard, but it doesn’t work.

I thought I would give it a go, but before I give up, has anyone else tried
this with any success?

Un-traverse a cross-reference in Word for Mac

2020-08-09 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi all

In Word for PC, Alt + left arrow takes you back to the place of the cross
reference you have just clicked. This does not work on the Mac. I have
searched high and low and cannot find the relevant Word function “Back” in Word
for MacOS (I have the most current version).

People variously say it is the GoBack, WebGoBack function - but these don’t
seem to exist anymore.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

Thank you.

Re: SSD external harddrives

2020-08-07 Thread Adam Lippiatt
I would be interested too.

I use HDD for backup purposes ($ spent on reliability not speed) but was
considering for a while some of these new SSDs to put my primary data on
instead of relying on the spinning drive portion of the fusion drive in my late
2013 iMac, but judged it not worth it as it only has thunderbolt 1 ports which
don’t give you access to the little non powered thunderbolt 3 cases that are
quite popular and speedy now.

I hear that quality SSDs last long enough these days not to matter. (SSDs do
lose storage capacity over time while spinning drives do not. However the
degradation is slow and doesn’t seem to matter for general use so far as I
know.)

As you have everything backed up, a failed SSD shouldn’t be much of a bother.

Hi Neil

Thanks a lot for this. I hadn’t thought about family subscriptions or getting
them through Officeworks. They offer a good price if there is more than one of
you.

I also forgot that you get the iOS, Android and Windows versions as well.

Thank you.

Re: Getting iMac to Sleep

2020-06-10 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi Ronni

All of the usual things are not working to get it to go to sleep.

However, I have just worked it out. In Activity Monitor, the list of things
preventing sleep included “cupsd”.

I went to the print queue and there are a number of failed print jobs. I
cancelled them and sleep works again.

I hope this helps someone else.

Thanks

Re: Getting iMac to Sleep

2020-06-07 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi Ronni

I do have Time Machine backing it up hourly. But even when the time machine
disk is ejected (and there has been a restart), still no sleep.

Begs the question though, is there anything other than 1 hourly time machine
backup? I would be happy to extend the time period.

Thank you.

Re: Interesting read regarding AV Software

2020-06-07 Thread Adam Lippiatt
I recall I had a suspect attachment to an email many years ago reported by the
virus software I was using at the time (I can’t remember which, it may be what
I am using now). But that attachment was said to be a Windows virus. So, in
effect that makes zero effective viruses for me since my first Mac in 1987.

However, in my mind as a low risk but high consequence category, I have
continued to pay for Intego virus software and it has never reported anything
(else).

It doesn’t seem to slow the system down with its “real time scanning”, but if
you want to do a “full scan”, although Activity Monitor doesn’t show much
processor use, it makes the system pretty much unusable and takes a long time
to do the scan.

Ideally I would like to get rid of it.

But, is AV software like vaccination? If enough of us get and stay inoculated,
we have provided immunity for ourselves and herd immunity for the group (ie
disincentivizing Malware creators from bothering with the MacOS)?

Strangely I see Windows as the place where viruses abound, but I run it in
Bootcamp, but for nothing critical to me, so, I haven’t bothered with Windows
AV software. I don’t think I have picked up anything .

People mightn’t recommend Norton’s, but do you run or recommend other AV
software or just think that no AV software is needed?

Thanks

Adam

Getting iMac to Sleep

2020-06-06 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi all

I am having trouble getting my 27 inch late 2013 iMac (running 10.15.5, but was
happening 10.15.4) to go to sleep.

I have tried the usual things like ejecting external drives, unplugging them
and plugging them back in.

Zapping the PRAM.

I had this problem a year or two ago and the ejecting and reconnecting the
drives did the trick but not this time.

Apple says something else to try is to “update the firmware” on the external
drive. I am not sure I have ever had any luck finding firmware for drives.

I have looked at the processes preventing sleep and there are a number of them.
This list goes up and down but never seems to get to zero.

 useractivityd
 sharingd
 apfsd
 hidd
 cupsd
 backupd-helper
 backupd4
 mds_stores

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Adam

As usual you have hit the nail on the head and I have now learned something new.

Setting the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode was all that was required.

Thank you again.

And you do have Time Capsule Network in 'Bridge Mode'?

All worked fine with this new network until yesterday. All still works fine
except the Apple TV won't now link to my iTunes library. It worked
perfectly until yesterday. The only thing I can remember doing yesterday
was turning the old Netgear wireless network on - connecting to that with my
iMac (which runs the iTunes library), but then turning it back off again and
switching my iMac back to the Time Capsule wireless network.

If I switch the Apple TV and the iMac back to the Netgear network - AppleTV
is back. If I turn that network off and switch back to the Time Capsule

Interestingly, Airtunes (in iTunes on the iMac) will work through the Time
Capsule network just fine (through the AppleTV), but even then the AppleTV
does not appear in the devices list.

I have had a look on the internet for this problem but can find no reference.

 Anyone have an idea?

Apple TV Network Connection Issue

2012-01-14 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi all

I recently set up a Time Capsule and turned the Netgear wireless router modem
into just a modem (I turned the wireless off). Wireless network served off the
Time Capsule.

DHCP is the setup.

All worked fine with this new network until yesterday. All still works fine
except the Apple TV won't now link to my iTunes library. It worked perfectly
until yesterday. The only thing I can remember doing yesterday was turning the
old Netgear wireless network on - connecting to that with my iMac (which runs
the iTunes library), but then turning it back off again and switching my iMac
back to the Time Capsule wireless network.

If I switch the Apple TV and the iMac back to the Netgear network - AppleTV is
back. If I turn that network off and switch back to the Time Capsule network -
gone again.

Interestingly, Airtunes (in iTunes on the iMac) will work through the Time
Capsule network just fine (through the AppleTV), but even then the AppleTV does
not appear in the devices list.

I have had a look on the internet for this problem but can find no reference.

Anyone have an idea?

My setup:

iMac 3.06gHz
MacOS 10.7.2
iTunes 10.5.2

Thanks

Adam

AppleTV Dropped Connection Problem (Solved - VirusBarrier X6 Interaction)

2011-05-27 Thread Adam Lippiatt

Hi

I thought I would just relate a problem I had with my 1st Generation AppleTV.
It disappeared from my devices list in iTunes, but was still there in my
preferences list (in iTunes). The AppleTV didn't seem to be updating (in any
event, I couldn't change any preferences in iTunes).

I delinked my AppleTV from my iTunes library. Rebooted both, no luck.

Remembering what I changed in the last week, I recalled updating to
VirusBarrier X6 from X5. I looked through the manual and found the problem - a
new feature called antivandal. The high volumes of data transfer caused it
to shut down the connection - describing it as This address was put in the
Blocked Addresses list because it tried to attack your computer with a
Connection flood.

If you just drag this to the Trusted Addresses tab in the antivandal
function, all is fixed.

A pity I found this only after I delinked my AppleTV from my iTunes library -
now it is uploading everything again - a long process.

Thought someone might find this of interest.

Re: Time Machine and iPhoto Data

Hi Ronni

Exactly as I did it.

You can see the title in the Time Machine window, but when restored, reverts to
original file name and the keyword is stripped.

Hope it is not a legacy from that hard drive restore permissions issue thing.
These are new photos from a few days ago.

Thanks

 Hi Adam,

Time Machine backups all iPhoto's photos with Title Keyword. It backs up
 your entire iPhoto Library.
How did you access the photo?

 Did you do this?
 1. Open iPhoto in Finder
 2. Enter Time Machine
 3. Find the Photo you want to Restore
 4. Select it Restore

You will see the Titles on every Photo, but you cannot see the Keyword info
 until you restore the photo.
Find photo in TM backed up iPhoto Select Restore.

Fwd: Permissions Issues

2010-05-18 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Ronni

Thanks for this. I did have a backup of the drive but unfortunately after
having the machine for more than a month I think the technician got exasperated
and just wanted to see the back of it. So, I got a new hard drive which was,
unfortuantely, a little noisier than the original and also the install was done
on a new user account which did not have the same name as the old one.

So, perhaps this is the source of the permissions problems. I did the id
command and got the following:

admins-imac:~ adam3$ id
uid=501(adam3) gid=20(staff)
groups=20(staff),101(com.apple.sharepoint.group.1),204(_developer),100(_lpoperator),98(_lpadmin),81(_appserveradm),80(admin),79(_appserverusr),61(localaccounts),12(everyone),401(com.apple.access_screensharing)
admins-imac:~ adam3$

Thanks for your help.

I will look into that. Unfortunately when the hard drive died I had to do a
lot of manual shifting of things as the service people could only give me a
fresh install with the data sitting in folders on the desktop. As time goes
by I am getting through all of the little issues.

Hmmm, this doesn't sound good to me. From reading above, I take it you did
not have a 'Backup' of the Drive before it was corrupted?
If the service people have just given you what they recovered from the
corrupted drive … and you are trying to copy these files onto the fresh
install, there could be corruption in some of the files.

Did you create an 'exact' User Account on the Fresh Install as the 'User' you
had on the original hard drive?
If you didn't, you will run into Permission problems, as you will find the
UID GID are not the same.

Mac OS X displays the user name of the account that owns a folder or file,
it’s easy to assume that that account with that user name owns the item. In
reality, it’s not quite so simple.
The owner is actually determined by a number called the UID—the user
identification number, not by the user name.
In addition the group is, in fact, determined by the GID—the group
 identification number.

To reveal your account’s UID and primary GID, type id in a Terminal window
 (and then press Return).
The output of the id command looks like this:
 ronni$ id
 uid=501(ronni) gid=20(staff)
 groups=20(staff),204(_developer),100(_lpoperator),98(_lpadmin),81(_appserveradm),80(admin),79(_appserverusr),61(localaccounts),12(everyone),401(com.apple.access_screensharing)

Hi Ronda

It shows a very long list of things - some things I spotted that don't appear
in your list:

.OfflineCache
.dat00f3.001
.identity

All backed up - give your idea a go?

By the way I tried to find the file using Neil's tip in finder and finding
invisible files - it didn't turn up though (found a bunch of other things).

The search string in terminal did find the file:

/Users/admin/Library/Mail/Mac-adam.lippiatt/.mboxCache.plist

I suppose I stay 'admin' forever now?

 Hi Adam,

You need to delete the .mboxCache.plist. Why you can't find it is a hidden
 file…

 1. Quit Mail and try this on the command line (Terminal.app) to find them:
 2. Open a Terminal window and paste this in:

 find ~/Library/Mail -name .\*

It should only find cache files like '.DS_Store', '.mboxCache.plist',
 '.OfflineCache', '.dontIndex', and '.index.ready'.
If so, and if everything is backed up, run:

 find ~/Library/Mail -name .\* -delete

NB: Don't run this if the first listing looks like it's showing e-mails. I
also recommend checking that you have a backup first.

3.Now launch mail and select Mailbox:Rebuild from the menu.

Hello Adam,

Are you using a case that is blocking the proximity sensor?
If you are using a case, remove the case to see if the same occurs
without the case.

If the same does not occur without using the case, you need to
consider using a different case that is specifically designed to not
block the iPhone's proximity sensor.

Cheers,
Ronni

iPhone Problems - Unresponsive Screen During and Immediately After Calls

2009-02-26 Thread Adam Lippiatt

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has experienced their iPhone screen locking
up (staying black) during or immediately after calls? As you can
imagine, it can be quite frustrating. Software has been restored
after a return to the provider (guy I dropped it off to said 'ah, the
proximity sensor has failed' - service people could not replicate
the problem, also noting 'what is this proximity sensor customer is
talking about'). I will take it back again today, but I was just
wondering if anyone else had come across this problem (googled, seen

Re: Apple iPhone

2008-06-13 Thread Adam Lippiatt
The Telstra lawyers have been into it already.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=579245rss=yes

Do Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all have entirely separate networks?

Thanks

Adam

---
Hi Stuart !

I wonder whether you can comment on the existing Optus network ?

I read an extensive article yesterday which seems to be lost today ,
that says a lot of the existing optus network is in the 900 MHz band ...
... and not compatible with the iPhone
which apparently can access the 850Mhz band and a 2700Mhz band

Cheers

Bob

Also does Vodafone operate in the frequency ranges that the iPhone can
work in ?

 Hi Everyone,

I noted a few questions on the iPhone and would like to answer some.
 For
those that don't know, we've been an Apple Store (AppleCentre up
 until last
year) since 2004. Because we're regional, we also have been a Vodafone
dealer since 2004 (multiple revenue streams!!). So we have the lucky
distinction of being able to provide the iPhone to our Apple
 customers, and
we understand the Vodafone contracts and prepaid systems. Hopefully
 that
will mean we will get through activations quickly!

So (Sales Plug coming!!!) - if you want to reserve an iPhone -
 please
let us know. We have a store in Albany and an office in Bunbury so
 we can
personally cover the South of WA. For customers we have in Perth
 (including
WAMUGgers), we may look at travelling up to Perth and organising a
 delivery
 point depending on numbers.

Firstly - Pricing. We are still waiting on plans. The iPhone will be
available as a prepaid phone as well. Generally, prepaid phones are
 priced
at a subsidy and therefore are locked so the carrier can generate
 revenue
from airtime. All carriers have unlocking fees but I don't know if
 they'll
do it for iPhone. The US pricing is only an indication. I wouldn't
 hang my
hat on it (ie MacBook Air!). Hopefully we'll have something today.

For Mike - you 'should' be able to use your iPhone overseas for most
 of its
features. It will depend on the carrier in the country you are in.
 You'll
have to make sure you activate global roaming with whichever carrier
 you
 choose as well.

Edward - I would suggest if you are based here and travelling
 overseas,
don't buy the iphone in the US. You will probably come up against
 locking
and carrier issues. Same as for Mike, if you buy and activate here,
 then you
can roam to whichever countries the carrier supports. For instance,
 Vodafone
have roaming contracts with hundreds of networks in 120 countries.
 It can
also depend on whether you go contract or prepay. Check the Optus and
Vodafone web sites and search for 'roaming'. Vodafone cover all your
destinations except Bulgaria at first look.

I think that eventually Telstra will sell or support the iPhone.
 Whether
they will have better/cheaper plans or not is another thing. It is a
competitive market so you can wait for a while to see what happens
 if you
choose. Just like with any mobile phone plan, check the small print.
 You
might think you're getting a good deal but the disgruntled customers
 we see
(leaving other carriers) are usually annoyed at what isn't in the
 plan.

Also important to note (for regional areas) that both Optus and
 Vodafone are
rolling out 3G networks throughout 2008 with a goal of providing
 coverage
across a majority of Australia. I don't think it will be quite as
 extensive
as NextG (I think 94% as opposed to 98%), but it will cover most
 areas. Info
 is available on the 'net.

Anyway, hope that lot isn't too much of an imposition. Feel free to
 ask any
questions. I can recommend Vodafone even if you want to purchase in
 whatever
location you are. If not Vodafone, Optus are a better option than
 most of
the other carriers (imho) if you choose to go that way (not that you
 have a
 choice at the moment!). :-)

 Cheers,
 Stuart

Leopard: Keychain and Time Machine Problems

2007-10-28 Thread Adam Lippiatt

Hi there

In addition to the intial problems I had with the installation ...

iiUsage is still asking me to give it access to Keychain each and
every time I log in. I applied the Apple update for keychain, but no
luck.

Also, I haven't managed to get time machine to do a backup to the WD
MyBook I bought on the weekend for the purpose. It either locks up
the machine (requiring a hard restart) at various points during the
process or backs up at such a slow speed that it would take a week to
finish.

G4DP1.25 is the machine.

Any ideas very much welcomed.

Hi Aurora

I also use a Netgear DG834G. But, I then turned the wireless off and
use an Airport Extreme (and express to extend) for wireless. I have
been much happier since doing so (both Macs and PCs in this house).

On a related note, my next door neighbour gets 14000 out of his iinet

luck pushing their Netgear DG834G to proper ADSL2+ speeds? Are there
any usual issues I should think about (line noise etc?).

Airport Extreme (Can't Get it to Work)

2007-02-03 Thread Adam Lippiatt

Hi

I am having no luck getting this to work with a MacBook either as:

- a standalone for airtunes (without dropping out - Mac and Base
Station are presently 20cm apart - in operation, they will usually be
2-3m apart - in the same room); or

- as a repeater with a relatively new Netgear wireless modem and router.

No matter what settings the orange light never stops blinking (I have
almost worn out the factory settings button - got it today).

Can anyone point me to some useful resources for set up (prefer to be
able to stick it on the wireless network and use airtunes - no
switching) or at least indicate success using it in this way?

Thanks a lot.

Mostly I use it for podcasts these days - up to hour long radio

Probably the only difference between the podcast and the classical

I have tried just loading the problem files and leaving the iPod
almost empty - still the same problem. I have rebooted it, updated
the software and restored it.

I have now taken it to DigiLife and they say that a delay of 15-20

 some WAMUG comments ---

For the last few days each time I go to a website (from bookmarks, or
a link, or typed in manually) it does not connect and I get a message
telling me the server cannot be found. But if I try a second time it
connects.

A wider problem? Of interesting note is that we are beginning to
receive
reports from some users who have recently had to manually enter DNS
server
addresses on non-Macs to resolve connectivity issues. This may be
indicative

of a wider problem -- perhaps increased lag from many ISPs DNS return
systems.

My own browsing seems to have bad patches either for a whole session
or part. Entering my isp's dns numbers had good and bad effects. It
enabled smoother page getting for the most part, but my calls for
streaming radio files from the BBC and NPR were delayed consistently.
Interestingly, when I used the RealPlayer browser itself, instead of
Safari and Camino, the files were served up properly - and then I was
able to access them in Safari and Camino consequently.I guess OS
X caches them somehow.
I have experienced one session where the delay (stutter if you will)
was removed by removing my isp's
numbers.
There appears to be no consistent fault and no consistent fix with my
set-up.

Peter

I followed the first tip at the help page - removing the help files to
see if one of them was causing the problem. It was the AirPort.help
file. Everything works just fine now.

Thanks very much for the advice.

Try here for some advice
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html. I have not had the
problem you describe but it has been several times discussed on the
Apple Support Discussion Boards and the advice offered in that web

Freeze After Wake Up From Sleep

2004-06-28 Thread Adam Lippiatt

Hello

Of late I have been getting a freeze after I wake up from sleep.
Normally sleeping takes just a second or two, but I have been noticing
that sometimes the mac may take quite a while to go to sleep, sometimes
in the order of minutes. The wake from sleep freeze seems to occur
after these extended going to sleep events (but not always).

Tonight it occurred again and I had keyboard input for a while (but no
pointer on the mouse (but scroll wheel worked)), but the computer would
not log out. I started force quitting open programs and then the full
lock up occurred.

Any ideas about what might be happening would be appreciated.

Thanks

Plaintalk Microphone and G4

Hello

I have an old plaintalk microphone and was wondering if anyone knew
whether it worked on a mirror door G4? It won't go into the microphone
connector, but maybe the line in connector?

Alternatively, should I be thinking about a USB microphone and if so,
does anyone have any recommendations?

ADSL Modem Recommendations?

2004-02-09 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hello

I have had a brief look through the archives, but a word search does not show
up anything relevant. In the interests of making a comparison with the
price/performance of the ADSL modem provided with an iinet broadband
connection, I was wondering whether there was a clear recommendation for a
quality ADSL modem suitable for a G4 running Panther.

I am assuming that ethernet is better than USB. Is this correct?

Re: Buying Panther?

2003-10-31 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hi all

Panther is great. I picked it up last Saturday morning (with t-shirt),
installed it over Jaguar and have used it for the week. I agree with Lara
(faster in everything I use - Xbench tells the story) and Rob (more
polish/finish).

I would definitely recommend upgrading based on my experience. Check on
software incompatibility though. My digital camera driver (Ricoh) still
works, but not as well. No upgrade from them as yet.

I came across this one with a friend a while back. drove me absolutely
nuts. While this may not be the cause, I suggest you check system
preferencesdeskop and turn off change picture every xxx ie. Just
select one picture to remain as your desktop. Then restart.

What I found was that if you set desktop pictures to change, but the
folder which you asked it to change pictures from was empty/only and
other folders in it, it went spac, resulting in multiple unexpected
quits of the dock and eventually the dock just disappears. So if you
make sure the folder has only pictures in it it should also be ok,
though I recommend just setting it to one picture to check first.

Check it out. After I did the above, problem disappeared completely!

Hope this helps. If you are still having problems/don't understand what
I just described, email me back!

Modem Problems

2003-08-23 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hello

Just wondering if you can help with the following. Correspondent has been
using 10.2.6 for a short while with no problems and then the modem ceased
working.

Thanks

Adam

I have a problem with the the modem in my iMac (DV SE 400). When I attempt to
use Internet Connect (on 10.2.6), I get an error message stating that the
device does not exist. I have checked the System Overview and, sure enough,
no modem appears under the network overview.

This is the second time that this has happened. The last time was about a year
ago while I was still under warranty. The solution then was the installation
of a new modem (the current modem). I was hoping that it would not have to
come to that this time as I find it hard to believe that I have been dealt two
 consecutive dud modems.

Logging into Windows Environment (at home) from Mac

easily done?

CD-RW on 7300

2002-10-15 Thread Adam Lippiatt

Hello

I have a 7300 and am thinking about replacing the CD-ROM drive with a
CD-RW. I would like to have all the functionality of the drive (ie.
CD-R and CD-RW) and am wondering if OS9.1 provides all of the
necessary software. I was advised that a drive I am considering
(with PC software only) but sold from Mac store, works just fine
with Disc Burner on an IDE PCI card. However, after downloading Disc
Burner, the installation software notes that it will not load on this
computer. I do have a Disc Burner extension already in my extension
folder.

Any tips on what I am needing to do to get full CD-RW functionality
with this drive I am considering?

Thanks.
