Re: [WAMUG] Beeping iMac and a question mark

2024-04-16 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Matt

If it’s doing 3 beeps, then a pause, then 3 more beeps that’s an issue with the
RAM.
But if it’s doing one long continuous beep than unfortunately that’s a bit more
servere - it generally means there is an issue with graphics card, firmware
issue or logic board/motherboard. And given it’s not booting off a drive (which
is what the folder icon means with a flashing question mark - it can’t find the
boot drive), then I’d say unfortunately that iMac has most likely “died”.
Given the age of it, you’d be hard pressed to get any parts or get it fixed
unfortunately. So only thing you could really do is take the hard drive out
(and hopefully it’s still ok with data on it), then either transfer that to
another iMac or put it into an external case to access the data.

But generally if an SMC, PRAM reset won’t start it, it’s not a great sign.
You can sometimes a) boot off an external boot drive with a system on it or b)
try starting it in Target Mode into another computer to see if can access the
drive still. But if it doesn’t work in either then I’d say it’s gone I’m afraid.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Strange issue logging in to iCloud ??

2024-03-10 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Stephen

Generally if it’s the window you’re describing asking to use the “usual
AppleID” then the password it actually wants is your computer password.
(As it most likely has your AppleID password saved into a special encrypted
token), so it’s then asking you to enter your computer password to “authorise”
the computer to access that token.
So when it pops up, you just enter your computer password and it will then log
in as per normal.

It’s so you can use your own AppleID on your own computer, but if someone else
a) tried to access it that can’t - without knowing your computer password or b)
someone else can log in to their AppleID had they want to check something.

But your normal computer password should then take you to the step without
having to go the long way you mentioned.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Which Email address?

2023-11-09 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Alex

No worries at all. All of that from memory too,..though I was out by a year or
so in one of them, but looked it up. So remembered 2 of the years at least…hehe.

You can use either IMAP or POP into Apple Mail. Generally POP3 downloads it all
from the “server” (ISP) to your computer, so you’re using less space.
IMAP, has the advantage of being in sync across multiple devices. But as you
fill up space on the server (at your ISP or your host), then over time, you
need to move emails to local folders.
Eg. I use IMAP across a laptop, and iMac an iPhone and iPad. Can send and
receive from all 4 device (5 if I log into webmail to see all emails there).
But all old emails I move off the server onto local folders in Apple Mail under
the heading of “On my Mac”. So I can have 20+ years of emails stored in Apple
Mail, but Inbox, Sent, Trash across all devices stores a lot less.
If you keep all the inbox in the server, eventually they advise you you’re
running out of space and need to a) buy more space or clear out old emails.

You can set up .Mac/@me.com/@iCloud.com into Apple Mail as well. So they still
can be a) read on devices/computers and b) accessed via webmail at iCloud.com.
All of that stays in sync. If you’re on the free plan, then you can’t go above
5GB storage. If you buy more iCloud storage,…then you can store more. And so on.
Again though, if you move emails off the Inbox (Stored in the hosting
server,..eg apple’s iCloud) and save it to local folders in Apple Mail then it
takes it off Apple servers (uses less space) and save it on Apple Mail online
(ie on your computer and stored locally).
So using both methods is handy.

Eg, as mentioned I keep my Inbox and Sent in sync across all devices for a
short period. Once I’ve dealt with things and don’t need it on all devices,
then I move those onto local folders in Apple Mail “On My Mac”.
So my inbox may have say 10 emails in (that I’m following things up),..but
under On My Mac on my laptop (my main machine) I have 22+ years of emails I can
look back up.
(Which are backed up to multiple hard drives for multiple points of failure
just incase).

That’s a sort of brief run down. It can get a bit more complicated,…but once
set up and working correctly, it works well.
There’s a bit more detail about it all in that link I sent, so worth a read of
it all.

Having MYOB in the cloud version on a computer, will work regardless of however
you have your email. The two won’t really affect each other.

Highway1 for example, allow you to IMAP (through Zetta who own it now of
course) -
https://www.zetta.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/H1_email_iphone_ipad_setup_guide.pdf
So can be used on an iPhone, iPad, Apple Mail on a computer and via webmail.

Bit more info there without going into all the details and in and outs / good
and bad points for each and how to work it efficiently.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Which Email address?

2023-11-09 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Alex

Mac.com started way back when (2001) when Apple introduced it as part of iTools
(which is what it used to be called).
They then changed it to @me.com which was part of MobileMe in 2008. It then
went on to become @iCloud.com in 2011 which is the current iCloud we’re used to
now.
People who have a @Mac.com also automatically got a @me.com which also got them
@iCloud.com.
But someone who “started” at either points can’t go back.

Eg. If someone had wa...@mac.com, they got wa...@me.com and also
wa...@icloud.com.
But someone who got @me.com can’t have a @Mac.com address.
And someone who got @iCloud.com can’t have a @Mac.com or @me.com address.

Confused? Hehe.
I originally got 3 @Mac.com addresses when it first was announced, so I now
have all three of those as @Mac.com, @me.com and @iCloud.com with the same
thing at the start of all three.
And it’s funny, as sometime when I talk to Apple support and give them my
@Mac.com address they ask “oh,..how did you get that”. So I have to explain the
above to them about how it all started and is now their iCloud.
I think the “worst” comeback I got was,..wow,..you must be old to be around
that long!
H,..thanks! lol.

But yes all three of the above are Apple’s equivalent to a free @gmail.com or
@hotmail.com or @outlook.com free email addresses.

RE Apple Mail.
Apple Mail will handle POP, IMAP, Exchange accounts. So it can be set up for
all three.
Generally speaking most ISP’s or email addresses these days use IMAP as
default. But you can still set it back to POP3. But most prefer IMAP.
Exchange set up in Apple Mail is used to connect a Microsoft Exchange account
into Apple mail.
And Apple Mail can also be set up to connect to a free @gmail.com account as
well.

So you can in effect have as many type of emails as you want.
My Apple Mail currently checks 10 different email addresses for the various
things I run. With a mixture of mostly IMAP accounts, 2 Gmail accounts (which I
only use for support and checking things) and 1 Microsoft Exchange account also
used to support Exchange for people.
But primarily I use IMAP for everything. As it works very well.

This is an old article, but also helps explain the differences quite well -
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pop-vs-imap/

Hope that helps make a bit more sense of it all. :)

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Finder - Recents.

2023-10-12 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Tony

Yes, as Tim mentioned, you don’t want to delete those, or you will lose it.
Recents is just a “ghost image” of where all your files are stored currently in
other places on the computers. So if you delete them, you’re technically
deleting the originals.
Easiest way to not see them, is to change what you see when you click on Finder.

To do that, go to Finder.
Then go to the Finder menu and click on Preferences. (Or Settings in Ventura
and above).
Then click on General.
Under “New Finder windows show” - you can then change “Recent” to say
“Documents” or your user directory (eg “Tony" or whatever your user account is
called).
Then close that window.

Now, when you click on Finder (“the little smiley person on the left of the
Dock”), you’ll get taken to the folder you selected above.
I tend to have mine just open to my User directory, as then I can go to all my
main folders from there - Desktop, Documents, etc.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Iinet/Westnet/TPG/internode etc stopping email address hosting

2023-10-09 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Walter

Yes, you have to repeat the transfer process for each email address. Each one
will get sent a seperate code to verify it, then complete the Transfer.
So for each different email address, you have to complete it.
This is where it can add up - as for each person it will mostly likely be per
mailbox/per month. So can add up.
At this stage TMC still don’t have pricing on what this will cost. Reading
forums and things, it’s likely to be $3-$5 per month per email address. There
was also rumours they may do a “free tier” but that it will come ads in your
email. This is all rumours and speculation, so all this could change. At the
moment they (TMC) say they’ll advice pricing a few months before it’s renewed
(Sept 2024 which is when iinet etc have paid it up to).

I have more info about it on my previous newspage here -
https://macwizardry.com.au/news-2023-09.html
And also on my last newsletter here -
https://mailchi.mp/2aa3a487e7ed/macwizardry-news-apr2023-6095435

These transfers have to be put in place before some time this month I think it
is. (or it may have been increased to Nov - but I’d probably get the transfer
in place as soon as possible so to not risk losing the email addresses.

Hope that helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Tuesday's meeting

2023-10-03 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
No worries Tony, glad that helped.

It’s actually quite clever,..(in a bad way). As 1) it uses an “icon” to make it
look like it’s a System Preference to trick you into thinking it’s coming from
the System itself and so you don’t look at it in Safari and 2) because it’s in
Safari it uses your browsing history to “tailor” the pops to each person. So
say you went to your bank (Westpac), and then Dymocks to look at a book, it
will tailor the pop up notification to say “your Westpac account has been
compromised” or “Dymocks link you visited was infected, so now your computer is
infected. And so on. So each notification/pop up is different for each person.

And because it’s a Safari Notification item, most Malware/Virus scanners won’t
see it when you run a scan.

If only all these people that wrote bad things actually put their work to
good,..the world would be a better place! :)

Enjoy your day. (Pop up free,..hehe).

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Tuesday's meeting

2023-10-03 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Tony

It’s actually not a virus or Malware. So scans won’t pick it up.
It’s a weird notification and you can remove it as follows.

Open Safari.
Go to preferences. / Settings
Go to Websites
On the left hand side Go right to the bottom to Notifications. Click on this.
On the right hand side you’ll see a list of things. At the very top of this
will be one that just has a small icon but no text beside it. Click on it once.
Then click remove down the bottom.

It will then remove it and you shouldn’t get the notifications anymore
(You may need to Quit and re-open Safari again. )

But that should remove it and resolve it.
Kind regards
Daniel

[WAMUG] Iinet/Westnet/TPG/internode etc stopping email address hosting

2023-08-01 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi All

An interesting piece of info was brought to my attention, and to be honest I
hadn’t seen it previously. - (definitely not an email from iinet advising me of
the change. Possibly an email will come later on perhaps?)

Apparently iinet/TPG and all it’s subsidiaries (Westnet, Internode etc) have
decided they are no longer going to host their customer’s emails. (And new
customers signing up are not given an @ISP email address).

They are moving it over to another business where they (the ISP) are apparently
paying for it for a year (up to Sept 2024 from what I can gather), then after
that if you then want to still keep using your @isp email address, then you
will have to pay for it. I haven’t seen any plans as yet, but a few things I
read said it could be “from $3.99 per email address per month). - though
doesn’t show what the quota would be.
Some other people had said to budget about $60 a year to keep the email address.

The “notice” is on all the ISP websites, so for example on the main iinet home
page (and same for Westnet, TPG, Internode etc), all have a link to information
about it.
https://help.iinet.net.au/iinet-email-messaging-company

Even the “new” company taking over (The Messaging Company), website's is fairly
sparse on information.

Definitely going to be a bit of wake up call for a lot of people. Who may have
an @isp address for 20+ years, then find if they want to keep it they now have
to pay. And I’m sure the internet plans won’t see a price decrease for the
money saved on not supplying/hosting email addresses. Hey, I could be
wrong,…but, well….time will tell.
(I have an @iinet address that I’ve had for about 22+ years that I’ve been with
them - not that I use it very much….but it’s there).

I know I have quite a lot of clients that use their @isp address, so definitely
going to be a change for a lot of people.
Another good reason to have a domain name I guess, or a “free” email address
like @iCloud.com, @gmail.com etc- then you can change ISPs without having to
tell everyone your email address has changed.
(As an aside, the price is about “normal” - as I looked at some of the “email
only” hosting plans I have for clients and a 10GB plan is $60 a year per
mailbox)

Definitely will be something to watch and see what happens with it.

Thought I’d post to the list as possibly others may not have seen or been aware
of this. :)

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] FTTP and ISPs…not Apple

2023-07-12 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Rosemary

Without know exact details, but if it’s similar to mine situation (which it
sounds like it), technically neither side are actually “telling lies”.
When NBNCo have been going through certain areas and doing the FTTP upgrades,
they only have “some” ISP’s that seem to have early access to this “faster
NBN”. Whereas iinet/Westnet dont seem to be one of the ISP’s with access to
these upgrades. So when they look it up, in the iinet/Westnet/TPG system, your
area probably isn’t available to go faster on their network.
And NBNCo who do say the upgrade is available, in the “small print” - it’s only
with some ISPs.

This is the same sort of thing I’ve found. Because I’m signed up to NBNCo
newsletter and info for my area, I got an email from saying “faster internet is
available” But iinet tell me,..no I can’t get faster internet. So they’re both
actually correct. As far as iinet are concerned for their “access”,..they can’t
offer anything faster. But if I go with a different ISP,…then I can actually
get faster.

I just found the email from them,..which says,..
"Hi Daniel,
As you have registered for updates, we’d like to let you know that your
location may be able to upgrade to nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) if you
order an nbn powered plan based on nbnHome Fast or higher◊."

Then a button I click that says “Check out the list of participating providers”
- which loads this page
https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/upgrades/more-fibre/find-a-participating-provider

And Westnet and iinet (for whatever reason) aren’t listed as a participating
provider.

For the time being I’ve stuck with iinet and use their NBN100 plan,….as I’ve
always felt a bit loyal to them to stay.
But with some of the newer ISP’s nothing offering better plans (and sometimes
better pricing), I’ve been weighing it up to change as well.

I was looking at the Aussie Broadband plans, as they tend to get good reviews
and always seem to be ranked quite high for reliability, cost, service etc.
(I wouldn’t touch dodo with a barge pole for another example,…lol. Had some
many customers been with them that had issues and left).

The one downside to moving obviously is losing your email address. But I
believe iinet and Westnet still offer an “email only” service. (I know they
previously had this service,..so I assume they still do. Haven’t checked for a
while). You used to be able to pay $25 a year to keep your email address. So
you then don’t have to go round and tell everyone your new address and lose
access to your email address.
(I don’t actually really use my @iinet address a lot, but I’d still like to
keep it if I did change.

I had considered going to the Aussie Broadband NBN1000 plan,. But it’s another
$50 a month. So I didn’t really go much further then look and dream. lol.

So as mentioned without knowing “exact” details, that would be my take on it
anyway.
The best place I find to see what you’re able to get is the actual NBNCo
website. As they’re the ones who do or change the infrastructure. So normally
their information is most up to date.
If you go to https://www.nbnco.com.au - then put in your address to check. It
will advise you what you can get on your premises.

I also think some of the companies are wearing the cost of the “$0 upgrade cost
to upgrade to fibre” - in the hope of perhaps getting new customers and
building their customer base. And perhaps iinet/Westnet didn’t want to wear the
extra cost of it. But I’m only guessing there - I could be completely wrong.

Hope something there helps.

Kind regards
Daneil

Re: [WAMUG] Mailboxes - Authentication Failures

2023-07-10 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Pete

The first thing I’d recommend would be to check the settings and adjust.
Sometimes it can just be a slight change in a setting that throws it out.
In Mail - Preferences - Accounts
Clcik on the account on the left hand side, then on the right hand side click
on “Server Settings”.
If the account has the setting “Automatically manage connection settings” (for
both incoming and outgoing), untick those.
This then gives you more control to adjust settings.

You can play around with the ports and Use TLS/SSL. And also ensure both are
set to “authentication” Password.
The main ports can differ depending on your connection, but you can sort of
“mix and match” and try a different port to see if it helps.

Internode recommend the following ports -
https://www.internode.on.net/support/guides/email/secure_email/

If using IMAp and an SSL connection then it’s 993 for IMAP incoming and 995 for
Outgoing. (But you can also use port 143 for incoming and 465 for SMTP outgoing.

They would be the main ones to try and adjust. Then see how it goes.
Sometimes you have to Quit and re-open Mail for it to “adjust” to the new
setting.

If using you’re IMAP accounts, then yes it’s fine to delete them and re-add
them - as everything will still be on the server.
If using POP accounts however, then if you delete it, everything in Inbox,
Sent, Trash folders will be deleted. (So need to save them to local On My Mac
folders).

But I’d try playing around with the settings first and see how it goes.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] iPad WiFi connectivity

2023-06-08 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Walter

Just going into a job so a quick reply.
But check your SMTP (outgoing) server setting is set to authenticate.
Basically it means you have to have your full email address and password set
for outgoing server settings. And authentication is set to password.
Also some overseas connections require you to change your outgoing port also.

Check those and see how you go.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Printer Advice please

2023-03-03 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Rod

I can definitely recommend the Epson EcoTank series - I sell a lot of them to
my clients and find them very good.
(And we run two at home - one specifically for photo printing and one for “day
to day stuff”. It replaced my colour epson laser I had. And the running cost is
very cheap. On one set of refillable inks you can get up to 2 years of printing.
And the bottles are only around $25 each colour - and again last up to 2 years
of printing. And I’ve always found the Epson range to be reliable and kept up
to date with drivers.
Any of the entry level Ecotnaks should do - eg something like ET -1810 or
ET-2810/2811 would be fine.
Note that some of the cheaper models don’t have AirPrint (they have “wireless
printing direct” which requires another App if you want to print from your
iPhone or iPad (not as “easy” as Airprnt).
Then it just depends on features you want - eg do you want it to have a screen
on it for ease of copying, flatbed scanning versus ADF (Automatic Document
Feeder) etc,…..
So more features can cost a bit more up front obviously.

Hope that helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] mystery ...one external drive not appearing

2023-01-24 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Rosemary

A few things that could help -
1. Check that the icon wasn’t in a weird location behind something else (I’ve
had this happen to a client where the drive icon was actually “hidden”
underneath another file (which is shouldn’t do),..so each time it was plugged
in, it went back to its “remembered location” below the file. My the file, it
then showed up.
(Doesn’t happen often, but worth a look first “just incase”.

2. Try unticking the setting to “show external drives”. Once unticked, restart
the computer with the setting “off” to not show them. After the restart then go
back in and “Retick” the setting for it come back into effect. Then see if
resolves.

3. Check that there isn’t another Application that could be using (or hiding)
the drive.

4. Delete the finder plist file.
If you go into your User Library (hold down Option key and click on the Go menu
then choose “Library” (being the one in Macintosh HD/Users/yourname/Library -
also shown in some help as ~/Library). Then go into Preferences. Find the file
called com.apple.Finder.plist - there may be a few. Drag these to the Desktop
and then restart. Then check External Drive setting again and see if they show
up.

5. You can also try in Terminal the command to show External Disks
Go to Utilities folder and open Terminal
Copy and paste the following
defaults write com.apple.finder ShowExternalHardDrivesOnDesktop -bool true
Then /exit
Then Quit out Terminal. Restart (just incase). Then see if ehy show up as per
normal.

That would be the main ones I would try first anyway and see how it goes.

Hope something there helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Splitting iPhoto library connected to iCloud

2023-01-24 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Tim

There’s probably a few ways you could tackle this (And others may have some
other options),..but the way’s I would think of doing it would be as follows -
(And this can depend on how many albums and things you have).

1. You could do as you mention, and stop it sharing with iCloud then start it
again. But sometimes this can look like it’ll take ages to stop and restart it.

2. Duplicate the whole “Photo Library” in your Pictures folder. Once duplicated
you can rename it to something like “Photo Library Archive”. Then open this new
one you’ve just made and remove all the current photos you have in your iCloud
Library (the main one). And delete all the new photos. This will make this one
your “archived” old photos. So nothing new in this one.
Then open your “main” library and remove all the old photos from this one, just
keeping the new ones you want.
This would then give you two Libraries. Library A being the “main one synced
with iCloud” and Library B being the Archived photos. Both would then be
different sizes.

3. Create a new Library and call it say Photo Library 2022.
From your main Library create a Smart Album with the criteria of photos from
01/01/2022 to 31/12/2022.
Export all these photos out into a folder. Then import them all into the new
Photo Library 2022. Once all there you can then delete them from the “main
Library”.
Repeat this for other years. Eg Photo Library 2021. Another Smart Album with
date range 01/01/2021 to 31/12/2021.
And so on for each other year.
Once finished you’ll then have lots of Photo Library and your “main”
Photo Library (Sharing with iCloud). Each would be a smaller library and lots
of them. And can be opened and saved to external drives.

4. Another option I haven’t thought of yet? The above are the main ones that
come to mind off the top of my head anyway,….

Of course, with any of this,…make sure you have 2 copies backed up everywhere
before (and after?) you start as well, so if anything goes wrong you’ve got
things to go back to.

Hope something there may help?

Kind regards
Daniel

Hi Tim

No worries on that. Glad that little extra step helped and all is working again.
I found I hadn’t needed to sign out of Photos for clients, it was just System
Preferences. (Unless I was just lucky with it).
But good all working again.

Re: [WAMUG] Updating Apple Terms and Conditions - Ventura 13.1

2023-01-23 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Tim

I’ve had that before also. No matter how times you try and resolve it,.it does
the same thing.
My fix I found,…. Sign out of the Apple ID. Then restart the computer.
As everythings in iCloud you won’t (shouldn’t) lose anything. (But have a
backup just incase).

Once restarted, then Sign back in. You’ll then get the “agree to new terms’ and
it goes away. And all is back to normal.

It doesn’t happen all the time, but I sometimes find it on new computers for
clients that have migrated across. After signing in on the new computer, it
will never accept the new T’s no matter all the things I tried. But I found
the old sign out and sign in again resolved it.
Where it’s on more that one account - I just did one at a time. Got it work.
Then repeated the process for the other account.

Hope that helps :)

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Web site hosts - Information - Recommendations

2023-01-21 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Matt

Without blowing my own trumpet,…I do web hosting through my sub business -
https://hostingserviceswa.com.au
Most of the hosting servers I use are located in Australia, so all local. And
local server support people if I ever need to contact them for things. I’ve
found them to be very good and reliable.

I can relate to the issues you mentioned with Voiden, as I have in fact moved
quite a few clients from them - with similar issues and stories like you’ve
said. (And in fact had a nightmare even trying to migrate sites from them.)
If your current host uses CPanel, it’s definitely a lot easier to migrate from
one to another. If they use their own system, it can be a bit more complicated
I’m afraid. More so if their servers are going up and down constantly.

But I do have quite a lot of customers that use my hosting service and very
rarely do I have any issues. I’ve been doing it for almost as long as I’ve been
doing MacWizardry (over 21+ years now). And though I’ve had some hosting
servers I use get taken over by others, I always keep an eye on who I use to
ensure it’s good, reliable and good support if needed.

One “downside” I’ve seen a lot this last year though, a lot of hosting
platforms are increasing costs - so pricing across the board for “local
Australian hosting” can be a little more than hosted overseas. But the upside
of this, is it’s reliable and your content is kept in the country. I think a
lot of the Australian based ones are noting moving more support back into
Australian, so staff and running costs go up,…to keep it all local,…so they
pass those costs along in slightly increasing hosting costs.

I’ve even found some hosts who say “it’s in Australia” and they “appear” to be
running it from Australia - but when you dig further into it - it’s hosted
overseas or a poor hosted platform in Australia and all support is overseas -
so you then sometimes don’t get support in “Australian time”,..it’s all US
times - or they take days to get back to you.
So I’ve been ensuring that all the ones I use are locally based and I can get
support when I need it (which is generally 24/7 and they’re quite quick to
reply if needed). Not that I rarely need to contact support, as I find the
hosting I have “just runs itself”.

Happy to discuss if you require more info. Just drop me an email or give me a
call. (I’m out at the moment but will be back later today/tomorrow…just running
around doing some family things on my 1 day off,..hehe).
Hope that info helps.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-29 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Yes I think that’s probably one of the most common reasons to have to run it on
a new M-series - MYOB in Parallels. :)
At least it works under Windows 11 Preview and Parallels. (Parallels definitely
does it better than VMWare I’ve found from experience when doing either for
clients).
What’s even worse though is MYOB trying to get some things working in MYOB
AccountRight for Windows. - it doesn’t do things that they had as a staple for
MYOB AccountEdge for Mac!
If only they’d spend a little of their millions and make a 64bit version for
Mac - they would have a huge happy client base,…lol.
But I digress,….I won’t get started on that. lol

I mean, it’s not like they didn’t have time to know it was going from 32bit to
64bit - what was it,..about 12-13 years when the first Mac OS 32/64bit came
along in Snow Leopard? (Panther had simple support for 64bit but not the main
OS I think it was). I guess that’s not much time for them,…lol. :)

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-28 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Tim

On a new Apple Silicon machine you’ll have a bit of a nightmare getting VMWare
to work - as we tried to do one for another client and it was a nightmare. You
definitely can’t use the same “VM File” you have - you have to start from
scratch. (And it will only work with a insider developer’s copy of Windows 11
for ARM - you can’t actually buy Windows for it).
I did set up Parallels with Windows 11 ARM for a couple of clients on a new
Apple Silicon iMac and got it work. But we had to set it from scratch. And some
things are a little different then normal - so programs apparently don’t work
as well in Windows ARM as they do for other. So that’s just something to be
aware of as well.

Have you tried an SMC reset as well if it’s not starting up. As generally even
if the battery has failed it still should run on power adapter. (Unless the
battery has swollen and is causing other issues as well).

Battery prices can vary - depends on if it’s a Early 2013 13” or a Late 2013
13” (Retina). As the batteries for the Retina can be a nightmare to do. (I
don’t even do the Retina’s myself for some models - as it’s just too fiddly and
risky the way they are “glued in”.

So just something to be wary of.
Other option would be something second hand - as that’s what I’ve got for some
other clients - which was a bit cheaper than new and still Intel so still
worked with all their current software - but a bit more up to date.

Hope that helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Mobile Plans Advice Please: Telstra, JBHIFI Telstra etc

2022-09-10 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Stephen

Yes when they come up, it’s sometimes worth looking at the “other providers”
that also use the Telstra network.
There are actually some good options out there. (We even looked at one that was
sold through Woolworthes on the Telstra network. They let you choose a 10%
discount off one shop per month. So we worked out for my son’s mobile that we
could pretty much get his plan “paid for free” by having a large shop one week
a month. The discount we saved from the shopping more than paid for his monthly
mobile account. :)
There are certainly a lot of them around now.

Telstra still have good coverage - but they seem to be back to their old ways
of increasing the plans constantly. It used to be $45 per month for our plan -
then it went to $55 per month. And now it’s just gone up again to $58 per month.
I keep meaning to look at moving it, as to be honest for what they offer
compared to the other companies - there’s definitely better value out there.
And yet still uses the Telstra network which is one of the better coverage
networks out there. (In my opinion). Their support has gotten a bit better too
(since they moved it back from overseas),..so that’s a bit of a plus as well.
But for two mobiles (which we use a lot), plus my son’s,..it all adds up.

So definitely worth considering some of the others I think. Well,..in my
opinion anyway,..hehe.

A few google searches for things like “Best Mobile provider on Telstra network”
generally gives some good results - for things like the links I had before or
https://www.reviews.org/au/mobile/best-mobile-providers-on-the-telstra-network/

Kind regards
Daniel

2022-09-09 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Rod

You may find some of the others that use the Telstra network - still give good
coverage but at a cheaper price -
This link has some good info as well -
https://www.finder.com.au/best-mvno-plans-on-the-telstra-network

There were a few on this link around the $30-$40 plan still on Telstra with 5G
https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Cheap-Telstra-network-MVNO-plans
(Eg Made had soul ate 5G, 60GB data for $40 pm.)

I’ve had a few clients use other carries but still on the Telstra network and
been happy with them.
Hope that helps.

Re: [WAMUG] Two iPhones receiving my SMS replies ?

2022-09-07 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Stephen

Sorry, may not have written that well.
On her iPad she would be removing your mobile number, as you mentioned she’s
getting your texts. So you want to remove the mobile number that the texts are
*meant* to be what you want to remove.
Eg if I was doing it on my iPad with no phone number (just an Apple ID), would
be removing my mobile OFF the iPad in the setting I mentioned.
(Or if no mobile, then the AppleID that the messages are being sent to).

Hope that helps.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Two iPhones receiving my SMS replies ?

2022-09-07 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Stephen

Yes, if you’re using the same AppleID that would be why,

You can disable it by the following…
On your wife’s iPad go to Settings - Messages.
Tap on “Send & Receive”. You’ll see a list od AppleID’s and phone numbers.
Untick the phone number you don’t want her to receive them on. (In the top
section)
This will then remove it from the “list of replies”.

That should then resolve it.
Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Sharing contacts with two users on one computer

2022-08-31 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Oh ok…weird.
As I have a similar setup for a few clients where they have their “Main” iCloud
for everything of their own stuff, then a “business wide” iCloud that we only
log in via Internet Accounts just for the Calendar and Contacts. And haven’t
seen the images change at all for them.
(And that’s on various different devices as well - but the one main iCloud for
all the work stuff. (Which we only log in as the secondary iCloud account). We
always do the “personal” one first via the main iCloud setting. And each
subsequent one (the “business one”) via Internet System Preferences.

Or at least I haven’t seen it happen as yet. But it doesn’t get used for
anything else - it’s only for the “sharing” type things.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Sharing contacts with two users on one computer

2022-08-31 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi Tim

You don't “technically” share the Contacts.
But if you go into System Preferences - Internet Accounts.
Click on iCloud on the right hand side.
Log in with the other AppleiD you want the Contacts from Then once asked which
things you want to access, untick everything except Contacts.
But yes, you do need access to the other AppleID to then be able to see the
contacts.

That will then show as another “Group” in your Contacts Application.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] WAMUG Mailing List move completed

2022-07-26 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Thanks all.
Yes,.had a few hiccups with it all - but hopefully got there in the end.

Still a few things just “tweaking” to get it right (as I think the newer
software does some things differently to the old software it was running),..so
just having a bit of a play and learn to get it all working.
(As I note it’s now showing a “CC” field in the To part that it never used to
do before,…so working to remove that hopefully).

I also note it now has another “archive” page as well that we didn’t have
before - so it’s archived in two places!
https://lists.wamug.org.au/pipermail/wamug/. - is the new one
https://www.mail-archive.com/wamug@wamug.org.au/ - was the only one we had
before.

So that’s quite good too. I’m sure I’ll find some more things one I’m a bit
more familiar with me. (So if things aren’t 100% right…please bear with
me,..hehe).

Thanks again! Enjoy!

Oh,..and as an aside…if you want an interesting “walk” down memory lane for
some old set up Apple Stores (well, not “old old” but “old”,..this is quite
interesting -

[WAMUG] WAMUG Mailing List move completed

2022-07-26 Thread Daniel Kerr via WAMUG
Hi All

All going well,…everyone should hopefully receive this message - which means
the list move has now been completed.

I’ve had to re-add everyone’s email address back on, and those members that had
Digest version I have added you back on the digest version. (So hopefully you
shouldn’t receive individual emails).

Moderation to post for non-paid members carried over as well. So you can
receive but can’t post.
(And welcome to join up if you do want to post). You can find information about
joining here - http://www.wamug.org.au/join/

Everything “should” still be the same, and can use the same address to post. If
you find messages bounce, you can also use the actual address which is
wa...@ists.wamug.org.au
(We may have to go to this down the track if the forwarder can’t be used).

You can also access your “mailing list account” at this page as well -
https://lists.wamug.org.au/mailman/listinfo/wamug

Otherwise, fingers crossed - all should be working as per normal.
There may be some little “tweaks” that need to be added once it’s up live and
working (and the old one gets closed off,…but hopefully not too much).

Any problems please let me know.

Thanks!
Kind regards
Daniel
