   Hello Fellow WAMUGgers,
Our next Users Group Meeting will be this coming Tuesday, 4 October,
   via Zoom.

As mentioned in a post on the list on 5 September, the committee often
needs help to come up with topics for our meetings, which is certainly
   the case this time.
So …… we are asking our members two things.
1 Any suggestions from you regarding discussion ideas or topics?
They do not have to be groundbreaking or complicated. Often a question
develops into a discussion and learning for us all.
2 If you have learnt something new or have an app, are you
willing to share this with others? No great expertise is necessary; ask
those who have seen some of my demos.
Meeting details will come out shortly.
   Users Group Meeting
   Cheers,
   Maureen Smith

Hi All

Just a follow up on this -

The committee agree that we’d rather not go to Facebook for a list, so we’re
all happy to keep it with the current software that runs it. It also has “real
people” at the end of an email to support it if something does go wrong.

And from my own personal experience trying to help clients with Facebook
issues,….trying to “actually” get to a real person (or even a real email
address) to reply for help is very very tricky. I’ve had a few times we’ve
needed to get something resolved and it was just an absolute nightmare. (In one
case over a 3 month period emailing various “support” email addresses never
even got a reply. And that was at least 1 or 2 emails a week over a 3 month
period (to different email addresses - as even trying to find some form of
support contact for them is a nightmare). Everything wanted to be “automated”
and done from your account - which in this clients case was compromised and so
we couldn’t use it to get help. Created a new account to use to try contact
them, but after all that time - no success. I avoid Facebook myself as much as
possible!

Facebook might be ok for some things,…but we’d rather avoid it if we can.
Working through a few hiccups just to make sure we have all the correct info
before doing the change over. So far, most of it going well. But want to get
all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed before making the final announcement before
the move. So as to make a smooth transition.

Will keep you posted with more info as we have it.

Thanks again.
Kind regards
Daniel

Hi All

We’ve recently been advised that unfortunately our current host is no longer
able to support where the WAMUG list has been sitting in Perth for many years.
As time’s gone by, it’s now the only list sitting on a very old server and is
due to be “decommissioned”.
Because of this, we are having to look to move it. The new space it will
sitting in is still hosted in Australia.

The good news is that there is still somewhere we can move it to that uses the
same type of software it’s run on. Which in theory should mean there is no
change to how the list will work. It will be “just like normal” for day to day
things.
The bad news is, it will cost us a little extra each year to run it. However,
the membership cost will easily cover this. So doesn’t mean an increase in
costs to all. So I guess that’s “good bad” news. :)

We discussed this within the committee and all are happy to look at the move.
In theory there shouldn’t be any disruption to the list in the transition
period and I’ll let people know before and after it’s been completed.
Hopefully, it should also mean that there are more current updates installed to
the backend of what runs the list - so that’s good news as well.

There’s a little bit of work to get it all organised. But hopefully as
mentioned, it shouldn’t affect the running of the list.
Though when it’s down, if you do post you may not see your message arrive. But
I’ll certainly let everyone know by a mailing post before it gets transferred
and after it’s completed.

Hopefully this will ensure the list can continue running for many more years to
come!

Thanks in advance for your understanding with this.
If anyone has any queries or concerns, please feel free to post them to the
list and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Thanks!

Hello Fellow Wamuggers,

Our next member's meeting will take place this Tuesday August 4th. We will be
attempting our first hybrid meeting. i.e. Combining a face to face meeting with
Zoom

At this point, behalf of the committee, I want to say thank-you the intrepid
Wamuggers who helped the committee explore the intricacies of Zoom and who
showed patience and fortitude when things didn’t go too well, including screen
freezes and boot-outs. The committee has purchased a license which should
eliminate boot-outs and timing problems but does not take into account that
omnipresent factor -‘Human Error.‘ As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, “By
seeking and blundering we learn.”

This month’s meeting will open at 7:30pm for a 7:40pm start. During the first
half hour we will be looking at the new bits & pieces associated with the
recent upgrades to Pages, Keynote & possibly Numbers. After that we will take
any questions on topics or problems you might have. If you only want to stay
for the presentation that’s OK. I know some of you are logging in from another
time zone.

If you want to participate please indicate via the list and you will be sent
your Meeting ID and Code.

For some time now I’ve not been receiving the first (original) message from the

Hello WAMUGers,

What is best practice when it comes to charging Apple laptops? When at home,
should I just leave the charger plugged in all the time or would that not be a
good idea? I remember Ronni’s tips about charging the phones (keep level
between 40% and 80% - and regular charges to that end better than getting too
low and then ramping up to 100%). For example - is leaving the charger plugged
in on the laptop for 3 or 4 days a no-no?

Re: Attached USB devices not shown in Finder

2018-01-03 Thread Graham Rabe
Hello Ronni,

Yes - all those are there - but the problem is that sometimes when some USB
devices are actually connected, they are not shown under Devices in the Finder
sidebar nor are any of those items ever on the Desktop - never have been.

In Finder Preferences > General, there is another item below that headed “New
Finder windows show” and then I can choose one from the following: My home
name, Desktop, Documents and iCloud Drive. Set as a default there is
“Documents”. What should I have in there?

If the problem persists I will in future try using the Disk Utility method.

Thanks for your help Ronni.

Cheers,

Graham

Re: Attached USB devices not shown in Finder

2018-01-03 Thread Graham Rabe
Hello Ronni,

Firstly - all the best to you for 2018.

In Finder Preferences all boxes are ticked except the iMac itself but there is
no “Desktop” under Devices. Desktop appears under Favorites.

None of the Devices shown in Sidebar are ever on the Desktop so I can’t use the
Desktop method (Command-E)

So the bottom line is that unless the device is shown under “Devices” in the
Sidebar, I have no way of safely ejecting the device (assuming it is not there
but is plugged into the USB port) if I need to to use the USB port for some
other device.

Cheers,

Graham

Attached USB devices not shown in Finder

2018-01-02 Thread Graham Rabe
When I attach a USB thumb drive or WD hard drive or Garmin device to my iMac
they show up in the usual place in Finder - under “Devices”.

But lately when I go to remove the device in Finder after a day or two, the
device is no longer shown there. When I detach the device from the USB port, I
get the message that I have not ejected the device properly.

But it is nowhere to be seen in Finder when trying to eject it properly.

Any ideas about what may be causing the problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks,

Re: Attachments to incoming mail in Mail not able to be opened second time

2017-01-29 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi Ronni,

There are now no check-mark and lock items at the top of the message but I
cannot say whether they were initially there prior to me clicking on the
attachments.

I have asked the sender to send the email to me again with the attachments to
see whether there is anything there that could help us work out what’s going on.

I hope to get back to you shortly - am awaiting their response.

Cheers,

Graham

Re: Attachments to incoming mail in Mail not able to be opened second time

2017-01-26 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi Ronni - I was hoping you’d come on board.

Maybe if I’d “Saved the Attachments” when right clicking on them when the icon
first appeared that would have solved the problem as they would have been saved
to my hard drive. But I can’t do that now - there’s nothing I can do with the

The files are pdf ones.

Yes, the email I’m referring to was from a Windows machine, but most of the
emails I receive with attachments are from Windows machines and this only
happens with some of them.

I’ve searched the web many times over the past few days but don’t see any
reference to the problem.

Cheers,

Graham

I’m using Apple Mail.

A restart does not solve the problem.

Attachments to incoming mail in Mail not able to be opened second time

2017-01-26 Thread Graham Rabe
When receiving an email with an attachment - from only some senders - I can
initially open the attachment. But when I go back to the email a second time to
open the attachment, the attachment is now a file name in blue between brackets
.

Clicking on that does nothing at all.

How can I re-open the attachment?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I have paid $30 membership fee per year for 3 years and have never had any
acknowledgment of receipt. Maybe this email will prompt some response or at
least a receipt for the current year’s membership.

Re: Correct spelling automatically - not working after today's upgrade to 10.12.2

2016-12-23 Thread Graham Rabe
Hello Ronni,

Thanks for getting back to me.

'Text replacement' was enabled in the 3 offending apps - Mail, Notes and
Evernote.

But the problem was resolved by deleting an existing entry and then re-entering
it. I did that once and that triggered all the other autocorrects to respond as
normal.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Graham

2016-12-23 Thread Graham Rabe
Thanks Peter. The problem I had - and its now been resolved - was only with
apps like Notes and Evernote and Mail. Word for Mac was not affected.

The problem was resolved by deleting an existing entry and then re-entering it.
I did that once and that triggered all the other autocorrects to respond as
normal.

Thanks for your response.

Correct spelling automatically - not working after today's upgrade to 10.12.2

2016-12-21 Thread Graham Rabe
I have thousands of shortcuts on my system for words. “au” for example for
Australia.

I’ve made them over the years by going to system preferences/keyboard/text and
added them there.

After the upgrade today, none of them work.

They are all still there in the list, and the box for the spelling to be
corrected automatically is ticked.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Graham Rabe

Re: macOS Sierra - iCloud - "Documents" folder on hard drive

2016-10-02 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi Ronni,

The answers to your 3 questions are:
A) - Yes - they were uploaded automatically without me doing anything after
upgrading to Sierra. When I looked for the 2 folders (Documents and Desktop) in
the usual way (under Favorites in the Sidebar) for the first time after
upgrading, they were not there - they were now under iCloud in the Sidebar. The
3 folders under iCloud are now fir the first time ever iCloud Drive, Desktop
and Documents. Prior to the upgrade, Documents and Desktop were in the Sidebar
under Favourites. I repeat, it was when I tried to find a document for the
first time after upgrading that I saw those folders were no longer under
Favorites. It was also then that I noticed the little circle in iCloud
downloading stuff.
B) - No - I never went near System Preferences > iCloud to tick that box. The
box is however ticked but I certainly never ticked it nor was I ever asked
after upgrading to do anything of that sort.
C) You are correct - I do not want to use iCloud Drive.

The only reason I’m using iCloud Drive is because that’s where my documents
were installed against my will without me doing anything other than upgrading
to Sierra.

All my documents have been uploaded to iCloud Drive. That happened over a day
or so - again without me initiating that process. I was reluctant to try and
stop that process in case by doing so I lost some or all of my data.

I want to get back to the situation where all my documents are in a folder
called Documents under Favorites in the Sidebar and I have now engaged Daniel
to do that. You will see from my response to his posting on this thread that I
was unable to do either of the things he suggested I do.

I appreciated you trying to help Ronni.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Graham

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for that.

Neither method you’ve referred to works. Documents and Desktop folders are
nowhere to be seen under first method and the only reference to those folders
in the Sidebar using the second method is under the iCloud section.

2016-09-30 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi Ronni,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I no longer have folders under Favorites in Finder called “Desktop" and
“Documents” and have been unable to find anything on web about how to put 2 new
folders there. Can you help?

Another thing - when I open a Word file I’m working on in iCloud Drive, it
opens up fine but when I right click on the file name at the top of the screen,
it shows its location still as if no change to iCloud has occurred i.e. under
my previous User “Documents” folder in Favorites. There is no reference to
iCloud Drive (where I have to go to open it in Finder).

Weird.

Re: macOS Sierra - iCloud - "Documents" folder on hard drive

2016-09-29 Thread Graham Rabe
Thanks for that Ronni.

If I go to iCloud in System Preferences and untick iCloud Drive, the message is
“If you continue, documents on your Desktop and in your Documents folder will
be visible in iCloud Drive only”.

That is exactly what I do not want.

I just want to be where I was before Sierra - where my Documents folder is in
Finder under Favorites and not under iCloud section.

I’ve assumed that the only place you can turn iCloud Drive on or off is under
System Preferences - iCloud. And then I get the message referred to above.

I’d appreciate any further assistance you could give me.

Thanks,

macOS Sierra - iCloud - "Documents" folder on hard drive

2016-09-28 Thread Graham Rabe
I’ve upgraded to Sierra and all of my data in my previous “Documents” folder
previously on my hard drive (in Finder under Documents”) is now only available
in iCloud (where there is now a “Documents” folder). There is no longer a
“Documents” folder listed anywhere on my hard drive.

I’ve gone to System Preferences - iCloud and see that I can change that
scenario (under Options).

What I can’t figure out is that at the bottom of that Options box it states
that “The full contents of iCloud Drive will be stored on this Mac if you have
enough space. Older documents will be stored only in iCloud when space is
needed.”

I have more than enough space on my hard drive.

In the Finder menu, when I select “Go” for “Documents” - it shows the
documents in the iCloud section.

My question is: where in Finder do I find all of my documents on my hard drive?
Where are they “stored”?

Any views/recommendations about allowing all documents to be stored only on
iCloud under this new regime would be appreciated. What and the hell happens
when iCloud bombs out/is hacked etc etc? And if I use this iCloud method of
saving all my data previously stored on the hard drive under the “Documents”
folder, what work is my local Time Machine able to do by way of backing up
(and/or other external drives that I use for backup backups for that matter).

Thanks,

Graham Rabe

Chronosync

2016-08-26 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi All,

I read about a program called Chronosync recently which claims to synchronize,
backup, and create bootable backups to almost anything you can connect to your
Mac: external drives, NAS drives, other Macs, PC's or anything else you can
mount as a volume. Even sync to iPads and iPhones.

Has anyone used this program and if so would you recommend it? Seemless and
regular syncing my iMac with my laptop would be great.

Another matter - I regularly back up to an external drive but am wondering what
my restored Mail from that backup would look like if I had to do a restore for
whatever reason. Would all my folders be restored exactly as they are now? If
not, are there any recommendations for a program that would achieve that in the
event of having to do a full restore. Maybe Chronosync does?

Thanks and cheers,

Graham

On again reading your original post to the list, you are able to send mail
from the iMac, it just has a longer delay in sending.
 1. Check in System Preferences Network - select the interface that's
currently providing your Internet access (usually Wi-Fi or Built-in Ethernet)
 2. Click Advanced and then click DNS
Do you have under DNS Servers: 203.0.178.191 and 203.215.29.191?
 3. If not click the 'plus' [+] button, type 203.0.178.191 and press Return,
then repeat this step using the address 203.215.29.191. then click OK
 4. Click Apply, and then close System Preferences
 5. To verify that the new DNS servers are working, visit any website in your

If DNS delays were causing the sending problem, sending mail should go much
 faster now.

Re: Delays in sending mail

2015-08-16 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi Ronni,

That shows an issue for sure. On the iMac (the machine that has the delays when
sending emails) the SMTP account connection shows as “failed”. The account name
is “iinet.net.au http://iinet.net.au/” On my Macbook Air (where there is no
delay when sending emails) the SMTP account shows that the connection
succeeded. That account name is “mail.iinet.au:gr…”

Changing the account name on the iMac to that of the MBAir will probably solve
the problem, but how can I find out what the full name of the account is on the
MB Air and change it on the iMac to that name?

Thanks Ronni.

Cheers,

Graham

Re: What the heck ?

2015-03-15 Thread Graham Rabe
I couldn¹t agree more Peter.

It¹s called a ³watch² because of its convenient location on our wrist. It
could and probably will be called something different before too long
when the full range of it¹s capabilities become understood. The convenience
of being able to conduct financial transactions with the flick of a wrist
rather than with a fumbling of the pocket or handbag, the convenience of
having critical medical data accurately recorded by the ³watch² and
available for a bluetooth download onto your GP¹s or specialist¹s computer
on your next visit, etc etc. Imagine what apps like Evernote or Strava will
be doing with the data beamed from the ³watch².

Maybe it¹s called a ³watch² by Apple as in them telling us to ³watch² this
space.

The same thing will happen with the Apple Watch. I can¹t really justify the

Let¹s face it, the Android side hasn¹t had a great track record so far with

 Hi Ronni,

 Hi Graham,

My only explanation for doing what I did with the trimmed video is: google
 told me so :)

A QT trimmed mp4 file is saved in QT as a .mov file and looking on the web
-even today - there are workarounds to get that .mov file back to mp4 but
they all seem to require a converter of some sort. That’s when I sought
 WAMUG’s help.

No need to as my experiment below will hopefully explain.

But as things turned out, uploading the .mov file to You Tube was not
 problem at all.

I’ve a feeling that there’s a fundamental problem with what I did with QT
though and I suspect it’s going to be Ronni and not Google that’s going to
put me on the straight and narrow.

Graham, No fundamental problem... but I hope I can put you on the straight
 and narrow ;-))

As I have never used Quicktime Player 10 for Editing, Trimming or Converting
video, as I use Toast Titanium and Quicktime Player 7 PRO.
Even though I DIDN'T really have the time :(( ... perhaps I should do an
experiment to see what why people have mentioned that QT 10 changes a MP4
 Format Resolution.

 My Experiment follows -

Quicktime 10 Experiment on MP4 video - Trim then Export and Maintain Original
 Format Resolution

The original .mp4 Video File used in my experiment details are:
 Kind: MPEG-4 Movie
 Size: 45.8MB
 Dimensions: 1280 x 720
 Codecs: H.264, AAC
 Duration: 01:56
 Audio Channels: 2

I first duplicated the original MP4 video file and carried out the experiment
 on the duplicated copy.

 1. Open the MP4 video in Quicktime 10
 2. Edit Trim
click drag the bars at each end to select the part of the video I want
 to keep
 3. Click Trim
 4. Then File Export
 5. Chose 720p From the Export Menu - because (720p: MPEG video 7.5 Mbit/s
H.264, up to 1280 x 720 resolution) which is the same details as my original
 video file
NOTE: QT 10 on export does add the .mov extension

 6. After completion of Export, I checked the details of the Exported /
trimmed .mov video file against my original .mp4 video file details
 File Get Info (Command-I)

The QT 10 Trim - Exported .mov Video File details are:
 Kind: Quicktime movie
Size: 45.8MB (notice the size remains the same even though
the movie is a bit shorter)
 Dimensions:1280 x 720
 Codecs:H.264, AAC
Duration: 01:54 (yep, I only shortened the original by 0:02 ;-)

 Conclusion:
Even though Quicktime 10 Trim - exported with a .mov extension the actual
video file is a MPEG-4 Movie with the same dimensions and codecs as the
 original video file.

Graham, I have done a one page document Quicktime Player 10 - Export Movies
to other Formats Resolutions in Pages and exported as a PDF.
It explains - Export a movie for specific iOS devices, Apple TVs,
 resolutions, or bit rates.
File Export, then choose an option from the Export menu.
The menu shows the maximum possible resolutions and data rates available for
your movie. The exact resolution and data rates of an exported movie depend
 on the original movie. etc...

If you feel the document would be helpful to you, I could send it to you
Offlist. Post back to the WAMUG list if you want the PDF.

Any recommendations for easy to use, safe and reasonably priced (or preferably

As I’ve said - I do not have the Allow me to be discovered by” menu on the

ask them to go to Airdrop in the Finder”.

The link you refer to in your email under reply was one of the ones I went

I’ve also gone through the following discussion group - seems I’m not the only

You DONT need File Sharing turned ON to use AirDrop!
AirDrop is more of a temporary opening of the security gates than File

When I travel with my Mac I turn File Sharing OFF.
I have File Sharing ON when home or on a Network I trust.

2014-11-02 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi Ronni,

The following site suggests it could be a network problem with some routers.

http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/25/fix-wi-fi-problems-os-x-yosemite/

The fix they suggest is not one I’m about to try and do.

But you may find it interesting.

Thanks again for spending the time you did on this issue.

Cheers,

Graham

PS iMessages are now no longer accessible on my iMac and MBA as they were up
until this morning. I’m going to read a real old fashioned book!!

Airdrop not working between MB Air and iMac after Yosemite

2014-11-01 Thread Graham Rabe
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I cannot transfer files between the 2 computers
referred to below (transferring from MB Air to iMac).

I’ve spent a long time researching the problem on the web but the best I came
up with was the following link suggesting to direct two computers to different
networks and then reverting to the original one. I don’t have access to another
network, so that fix can’t be used in my case.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6608769

The two computers recognise each other early on in the linkup but as soon as I
highlight the files to be shared and then press “airdrop” under the “share”
icon, the iMac screen drops the MB Air photo and the link is lost. I’ve also
tried “search for older mac”, but I don’t get any further.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Graham Rabe

Alfred v2

I downloaded Alfred v2 some time ago and never used it much and now want to get

When I go to Applications and try to move it to trash, I get a message saying

How do I close it? There is no indication anywhere that it is open.

 Hello Graham,

To tidy a bit more you need to delete/trash some other files pertaining to
 Alfred on your system.

 1. In your home folder, delete the following file:
 ~/Library/Preferences/com.alfredapp.Alfred.plist
 2. In your cache folder, delete the following file:
 ~/Library/Caches/com.alfredapp.Alfred
 3. In Application Support, delete the contents of the Alfred folder:
 ~/Library/Application Support/Alfred/

If you do not have the hidden User Library showing:
Mavericks hides the user Library folder (that is, ~/Library) by default, just
as Lion and Mountain Lion did.
You can open it easily enough by holding down Option while choosing Library
from the Finder’s Go menu, but if you find yourself doing this frequently,
that can get to be a hassle.

Mavericks introduces an easier way to make the user Library folder visible
all the time—no more fiddling in Terminal.
All you need to do is open your home folder in its own window, choose View
Show View Options, and select the Show Library Folder checkbox.

You don't really mention what it is you need to do in a PDF editor. As others
have mentioned, the built-in Preview you already have on your Mac has
extensive markup features, and if you're running Mavericks, you can also use
it to fill in forms and type directly onto the PDF, although you cannot alter
 existing content.

If you want to go to the next level, PDFPen or PDFPen Pro is well worth a
look. Compared with Acrobat Professional, PDFPen is inexpensive at $75 from
the App Store, although you'll find it's a little from the publishers
themselves at xhttp://smilesoftware.com/PDFpen/index.html. Two of the more
valuable features are the ability to change text within the PDF, and to
convert a PDF to MS Word format. It also has passable (but not exceptional!)
OCR abilities. The Pro version allows you to create interactive forms.

Another option you might want to look at is the slightly cheaper PDF Nomad
 (https://sintraworks.com/index.php/sintraworks/pdfnomad_home), also available
in the App Store. It also allows you to create interactive forms, also has
OCR abilities and even performs imposition so you can print small booklets.

There are others out there as well, but I don't have experience with them so
I can't really comment. Both apps mentioned above have downloadable demoes,
so you make your own evaluations.

Hello Ronni,

“Scale to fit Paper Size” is selected. Starting in Safe Mode unfortunately made
no difference.

So the problem remains but I really appreciate you trying to help resolve it.
If it is ever resolved, I will certainly let you know what fixed it.

Hello Ronni,

The problem remains whether Scale to Fit Paper Size is selected or
deselected. The default is deselected.

I’ll do some more research on “Page Break” issue in Mail - good tip.

Hello Ronni,

I forgot to mention that this is a problem only with my Macbook Air (purchased
2011 using Mavericks 10.9.3). My iMac (purchased January 2013 using Mavericks
10.9.3 and a Kyocera FS-C2526 MFP printer) has neither of the problems.

However, other iMacs on Mavericks also have the split line issue - see the
following from an Apple discussion site:

Re: Safari can't connect!

2014-02-04 Thread Graham Rabe
Hi Rick,

I had same problem today, googled it and came up with this:

Open System Preferences Network Advanced DNS

Click + and type:

208.67.222.222

Click + again and do the same.

208.67.220.220

Click OK.

Quit and relaunch Safari.

I did that and it appears to have solved the problem.

Cheers,
