Evening all,

Is it possible to get a hit counter on a web site that has been made
by iWeb.

Hopefully without all the HTML mumbo jumbo.

Cheers for that Blitto

So simple it's done
One of the many ways I love Apple. And this this user group.

Thanks also Ronnie, this site will be staying on MobileMe for awhile
until it is finished. I am building this while I slowly wean my lovely
other half away from the dark side. The site she has was built using
photoshop and dreamweaver and to buy the complete CS4 suite will cost
me more than the 24 iMac I intend to buy for her.

Just be aware that your enthusiasm may be curbed if you ever try to
copy very large amounts of data at once (such as cloning your hard
drive!). USB 2.0 tends to choke and slow to a crawl under such
conditions. This is why a drive with a Firewire port, while more
expensive, is a much better option. It is much better at sustaining
a transfer rate.

I certainly agree with Peter, I personally would not purchase a USB
External Drive for backup purposes or transferring large Video
files.

Firewire is faster and more stable.

Which makes it even more annoying that Apple is now pushing you
more more

to USB:

- Want to plug a drive to an airport extreme for network access -
it has

to be USB.
- Macbooks no longer have firewire ports

Re: iphone and gmail

2009-05-23 Thread Peter Fowler

Hi Adam

You can only get push notifications for mail/calendar/contacts through
mobileme. All the other accounts are fetch only at the moment.
This may change with the updates that are coming soon, you will be
able to nominate which apps run in the background.
On your iPhone if you go to settings/fetch new data and select every
15 minutes it will look for emails more often, even if mail is not
open. They warn you that if you fetch more frequently you will use
more of your data plan but with your 1GB it will not be a problem. I
use 3G almost all the time for everything and never got close to the
1GB limit.
I also have the google app and have been unable to log on to gmail
with it. That should not be a problem if you already have gmail set up
though mail.

hope this helps

Hi Rod

I have been using MotionX-GPS for about a week now and it seems quite
good and easy to use.
I haven't tried using sat info only though as I have always had good
cell tower signal.
It can take up to 15 min to get a Sat signal on its own so that is
something I would test out before I try to use it on it's own.

You can try MotionX-GPS lite for free to see if you like it before
you

shell out your hard earned for the full app.
Don't forget the phone does not have a magnetic compass so the apps
acquire info from orderly changes in position. Steady directional
motion will improve accuracy.

As for extending the battery life of the iPhone, talk to Daniel Kerr
and grab a Dexim Bluepack they are brilliant and can re-charge the
phone back to full power in about one hour. To save battery life
while
using the app you can hit the sleep button and it will keep running
in

the back ground.
You can also share the waypoints with this app by email or facebook
but of course you will need a cell tower signal to do so .

Hi Chris

If you don't have any of the Elgato products they are worth it just
for the great features they have with digital TV and what you can do
with it. As for being able to convert AVCHD from a camcorder to the
mac sounds even better.
Just remember the higher the quality, the larger the file size and the
longer it will take to convert/edit.

Which camera, from personnel experience don't get JVC. I bought a GZ-
HD7 a little over a year ago and they are not compatible with Mac.

You mentioned whale work so I am guessing you may get a little wet at
times. The Sanyo that Martin has suggested would great for working on
the surface but if going a little deeper than that you will need a
proper underwater housing and for that I would recommend Sony.
If you drop in to the local dive shop in Busso and pick up a free copy
of the Dive Log magazine you will find lots of ads for camera
equipment. Be prepared though the cost of the housing will be 2 or 3
times more than the cost of the camera

good luck and I hope we get to see some great whale shots

itunes transfer

2009-01-26 Thread Peter Fowler

Afternoon Muggers

What is the easiest way to transfer all the info (songs apps podcasts)
from one laptop (HP) to another (Dell)

My son has just changed jobs and he has been given a new laptop to go
with the job. He has been using my old laptop to keep his iPhone up to
date.
We have downloaded the latest iTunes to his new laptop but when you
try a sync the iPhone to it, it says it will replace all the
information on the iPhone with

what's on the new laptop, which is empty

I understand he may have to de-authorise the old one (iTunes)
authorise the new one, but how does he transfer all his info over

cheers

p.s. can't wait to get a copy of songsmith ... ha

Re: Multiple docks

2008-11-23 Thread Peter Fowler

Hi Walter,

I must admit I had not actually used this application I only
remembered seeing it on silvermac and thought, what a good idea as the
dock can become very cluttered sometimes.

I went back and downloaded it. Once downloaded, drag it into the apps
folder and immediately it placed an icon in the task bar.
Clicking on that opened it, I went to preferences, clicked on new and
it created a new dock. New dock 1 and New dock 2

Once you have created the new dock you can add and remove items as you
please.
There is also many more options available as in 2D,3D and alignment
and position.

The docks can be accessed by the shortcuts command 0 and command 1

hope this helps

cheers

Re: BlueAnt SuperTooth Light

Hi Janis

I am currently using a BlueAnt Z9 bluetooth headset and it works
superbly. It is small, light weight and very easy to use.

I would say all the BlueAnt range is compatible with the iPhone as are
most bluetooth devices. My partner has a new Hyundai Getz
that comes fitted with a bluetooth compatible stereo and that also
works fine. I must admit I prefer the headset, especially for private

conversations.

Re: Update to 10.5.5

2008-09-16 Thread Peter Fowler

Hello Peter,

In general, run Repair Permissions after installing or upgrading
software.

To be accurate, it doesn’t actually repair permissions. Rather, it
simply resets permissions.
Permissions stay the way they are set until someone or something comes
along and sets them another way.

Extract from 'Take Control of Maintaining your Mac':

In Mac OS X, each file contains information specifying which users(or
parts of the system) can read it, modify it, or execute it.
This information is collectively known as permissions. If a file has
incorrect permissions, it can cause applications to misbehave in
various ways, such as crashing or failing to launch.
Ordinarily, installers set the correct permissions for the files they
install, and the permissions stay that way permanently.
However, a poorly written installer can mess up permissions—even for
files it did not install—and if you use Unix commands such as chown
and chmod,
you can accidentally set files’ permissions incorrectly. These sorts
of problems occur infrequently, but they do occur.

The Repair Permissions feature looks for certain software installed
using Apple’s installer, which leaves behind files called receipts
that list the locations and initial permissions of all the files in a
given package. Repair Permissions compares the current permissions to
those listed in the receipts and, if it finds any differences, changes
the files back.
The command ignores software installed in other ways (using a
different installer or drag-and-drop installation, for instance) and
knows nothing about legitimate permission changes you may have made
deliberately.

Cheers,
Ronni

Cheers Ronnie, Thanks for that ... I will make sure that I do that
after this next update.

Have I got this right,

Go to utilities, select Macintosh HD, click Repair Dick Permissions

Peter

Hi Michael,

I agree with Philippe, definitely max your RAM.
Especially With Snow Leopard due for release in early 2009.

To accommodate the enormous amounts of memory being added to
advanced

hardware, Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X to
support breakthrough amounts of RAM ―up to a theoretical 16TB, or
500

times more than what is possible today.
More RAM makes applications run faster, because more of their data
can

be kept in the very fast physical RAM instead of on the much slower
hard disk.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Michael WAMUG'ers,

It is always a good idea to max your RAM if you can afford it, and

function

at its best. Of course, if you are like me with many applications
open at one time, it is a must to have the most RAM possible.

For price, can't help you but there will be others on the group who
can give you an idea.

I have a 17 MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2
SDRAM.
With my first couple of Macs I upgraded RAM to the maximum
available

for the
particular computer. Is that strategy still desirable with the
MacBook Pro?

If so, what's it likely to cost?

OS 10.5.4

Thank you,

I still have about a month to run on my old three plan and so far have
not been very happy with Optus. I have never had so many drop outs and
trying to make sense of their website, well, don't get me started ...

I would like to hear from anyone who is using a three sim in their

Just make sure you change your APN (Settings - General - Network -
Cellular Data Network - APN) to 3services. This will allow you to
view the three homepage (http://www.three.net.au) when on a 3G
network, retrieve email, etc.

Not sure if this is the advice your after. But if you do move to three
or already with three, this is the main configuration setting you'll
need.

Email also works on the iPhone, I can provide the connection settings
if you don't know them.
