Re: Thoughts on membership

2012-06-30 Thread Wendy S Austin

I have been pondering the comments from Peter and Eugene and their reasons for
not being able to pay the $30.00 membership fee. I feel the need to say I was
rather disappointed in some of the responses to those comments, and refer to
the comment below. It is not for us to judge what is or is not a significant
amount of money to someone else.It is also not very wise to be as
simplistic as the comment below, about such things. It might work out to 58
cents a week but thrown on top of other expenses people have, $30.00 cannot
always be found.I had a young school girl knock on my door last week, fund
raising for something, and when I told her I did not want to participate she
told me it was just the price of a cup of coffee after all. How patronising!
She was given a rather stern talking to and sent on her way.

Please don't respond to people's honest expressions of why they cannot meet the
$30.00 cost in such patronising ways, it really does demean you.

Kind regards

Wendy

iPad problem

2010-08-26 Thread Wendy S. Austin
Good morning EveryoneI received my lovely iPad last night and have had troubles with it ever since :-(I thought it should all be fairly straight forward as per my previous Apple goodies, I connected it to my iMac and went through the registration process. Email downloaded okay, I then synced it with iTunes and music and photos downloaded. Since then it seems to be stuck on the Apple logo screen. Once or twice it has come alive and I have tried to use it but it quickly goes back to the Apple logo screen. It came on to the home page this morning so I tried to open iPhoto but all I get is 'Please wait updating library' with a spining grey wheel going nowhere and then the Apple logo again. How do I shut it down fully? From what I have read I gather I am supposed to hold both buttons together until the red slide appears but that slide never appears. Any ideas?Wendy

iPhone - Airplane Mode

2010-04-15 Thread Wendy S. Austin

Good morning all

There has been some 'discussion' at work about leaving phones in the 'Airplane
Mode'. According to the health and safety people (Australian Government
Department), even when phones are in that mode, dangerous things can happen to
people using headset telephones should a call come in.This seems illogical
to me as I thought once the phone was in 'Airplane Mode' the telephone part of
the phone was turned off completely thereby making it just an iPod sort of
thing, if you get my drift.

I have done some searching on the internet about this but can't seem to find
any answers. Does anyone here have any knowledge about it?At the moment
we are required to turn our phones off completely when in any area where
headsets are used, not allowed to put it into 'Airplane Mode'.

With thanks.

Bluetooth Magic Mouse

Greetings Peter

Not sure if your problems are the same as mine -

I am having problems with Magic Mouse whereby it stopped doing all the extra
things like scrolling and became just an 'ordinary mouse'. Also looking at
the System Preferences Mouse, I no longer got the video showing how to use the
Magic Mouse, instead it just showed ordinary mouse setups. After three
lengthy phone calls with Apple Support, the third person I spoke with suggested
deleting the bluetooth plist in MacIntosh HD LibraryPreferences and
restarting computer. The Magic Mouse then works properly however, this
annoying fix needs to be done every time I shut down and restart the computer.
I am about to speak with Apple again to see if there is a proper, permanent
fix for it.

iPhoto won't recognise Nikon

2009-07-19 Thread Wendy S. Austin

Greetings All

I am running iPhoto 9, 8.0.4 (409) and until today, it is set up to
download photos from my Nikon D70.Now when I connect the camera
using a cord to the USB slot on my MacBook Pro, iPhoto acknowledges
that a camera has been connected and opens up but that is as far as it
will go, it will not show the Nikon on the left hand panel or show the
photos. I have now used three different cables in case that was the
problem but it still won't work. Any suggestions?

I am looking at Internode so if anyone uses them can you let me know

I am totally unable to decide whether we need a land line or not.
What are the pros / cons of having one?We do all our international
calls via Skype and have mobile phones.

Please feel free to send your advice off list if you consider this too

The wireless network is now working and both laptops are backing up to
the Time Capsule, at last.I have to give thanks to Ronni who was
checking the archives and wrote to me with a few suggestions, one of
which worked. It was simply that I was not pressing the reset
button on the Time Capsule for at least five seconds, that was the
only problem.

I also took Daniel Kerr's advice and went back after everything was
working and set the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode so as not to have the
Netgear Time Capsule both giving out IP Addresses. You do this in
Airport Utility (when it can see your Network). Double Click your
Base Station (which shows in the left column), then click Internet -
at the bottom of the window Connection Sharing set it to Off
(Bridge Mode).

Many thanks everyone for all your help, it is much appreciated.

Lost wireless network

2009-02-14 Thread Wendy S. Austin

Greetings All

We have a wireless network using a Netgear modem and Time Capsule for
automatic backup and wireless printing. We have one MacBook Pro and
one MacBook on the network both running the latest version of
Leopard. A couple of days ago the MacBook could not back up to the
Time Capsule saying something like the volume could not be mounted.
I decided to have a look at it today and told it to rejoin the network
(I can't remember the exact steps I took) and now, the wireless
network cannot be found :-( by either machine. Using the Airport
Utility to scan for the network, it scans and reports it cannot find
any wireless networks. The light on the Time Capsule flashes amber
which seems to confirm that it cannot find the network.

I was thinking of setting up a new network but would like just get it
working on the one already setup if possible. Can anyone give me
any advice please?

With thanks.

Hope that helps.

Zip file opening with .cpgz

2009-01-25 Thread Wendy S. Austin

Hello Everyone

I have just downloaded a heap of .zip files using Firefox and when I
unzip them they come out with a .zip.cpgz extension and I cannot open
them. This happened recently while using Firefox and when I
downloaded the same file using Opera, it unzipped with no problem.
So, it is Firefox related and unfortunately I forgot about that when I
downloaded these files. There has been mention of this problem
before and I have found some discussion on the internet but no one
seems to be able to suggest how to go open them. I did try Springy
software but it wouldn't open them either.

Any suggestions, other than going back and downloading them all again
using Opera?

With thanks.

Thanks Steve. I have now downloaded one of the files using Opera and
it unzips without the .cpgz extension being added. So, for me, it is
a problem with how Firefox handles things. Will let you know if I
discover how to open these files, otherwise I am going to have
download them all again with Opera.

Re: New Imac keyboard

2007-11-13 Thread Wendy S. Austin
Very sorry about this Sam, best of luck! Not that this information
will help you but, Thomas has just flown the Airbus A380 simulator in
Toulouse and the keyboard which is mounted on the fold away table
which is stored on the instrument panel in front of the pilots is
waterproof because, according to Airbus, pilots are forever knocking
their cups of tea over things. Perhaps Apple needs to confer with
Airbus for future keyboard design ...

other places it can go except into the circuitry because it is so
slim) and hope for the best.

So a new cleaning kit and a couple of odds and ends later (i really
should have left my purse home!) here I am cleaning, cross fingers!

Leopard has resulted in a generally snappier performance - maybe that
is just the benefit of a nice clean disk after an Erase and Install.
Anyone else's thoughts on this topic would be helpful - it may all be
just a subjective response to a few slower than usual connections!

I have been using the Griffin RoadTrip for over a year now and am very
happy with it. It is used in a 2x4 pick up truck and often goes over
some very rough roads but has never missed a beat.

interested to know if anyone on the mailing list has any experience
with it.

Thanks

Anyone had the same experience?

Re: Dot Mac account for Videoconferencing

Brett, I have found Skype much better than iChat and now only use
Skype for videochat. I was consistently getting the 'bandwidth
insufficient' error message with iChat whereas when I tried Skype it
connected with no problem. I am using videochat with people in
Australia, USA, England and China.

Re: iPhone Terms Conditions

2007-07-12 Thread Wendy S. Austin
We used to pay to make and receive mobile calls a few years ago but
with the arrival of competition, that has changed. If we make a
mobile call to another mobile phone using the same provider, there is
no charge to the receiver. However if we make a mobile call to
another mobile on the competitors system, we all pay. At the
moment though, the mobile companies are vying to get service
contracts with the ex-pat pilot group and are willing to offer all
sorts of incentives including no charge to the receiver no matter
which company they are with.I have noticed our SMS is much
cheaper than in Oz.

index6.php, which say that there is a semi-transparent inline PDF
control bar for controlling PDF's when viewed by Safari's own built-
in PDF viewer (rather than, say, the one provided by Adobe).

The Help maintains that this toolbar can be seen by pointing the
mouse in the middle of the PDF page, near the bottom. I see no sign
of it all. Right (or control)-clicking produces the standard
contextual menu for controlling the PDF, but I cannot produce a
toolbar, semitransparent or otherwise (Core2 duo Macbook Pro).

Has anyone else seen this animal?
