Earlier this evening I suddenly thought about how often the actor Allan
Melvin appeared in Mayberry. I came up with 8 instances, all of which
were well-portrayed IMHO. Then I went on and realized what an

Allan Melvin continued to make several appearances on Mayberry RFD. He
made one appearance as the Mayberry barber when he talked Emmett into
buying a toupee and he also was Clyde Plunk, Millie's former boyfriend in
one episode. He bullied Howard and kept calling him Ace.

Hi Gang,
In doing some of my Christmas quote t.v. viewing today, I spied the lovely
and talented Julie Sommars (Julie on Matlock) and Allan Melvin (broad cast of
characters, including the fruit stand bully and of course Sgt Hacker in Gomer
Pyle) today on an episode of Perry Mason entitled

Hey Mayberry friends. There's only one Allan and all of us Mayberry nuts owe
him a great deal of gratitude for making all of our internet fun so good. We've
only met a few times but I love him like a brother. I just wish we could show

I'd like to give him
Allan blacklisted, indeed? Someone must have found out that some of us on
the digest play cards and they must be afraid Allan will get addicted to
gambling. Also we sometimes tell jokes on the digest (clean ones), but most
of the time we just horse around and drink root beer. Wonder
anything about this is because they were

I too was concerned about not hearing from Allan and I emailed Paul just to
see if he knew anything. He said Allan is fine. Maybe he is having emails
issues as well and that is the reason we have not heard from him. This is
the 2nd day now that I have gotten the digest again so I am pretty happy
I have been reading all the post about TvLand and different topics and thought
that Allan had corrected that a while back. I was expecting him to post the
rules again but glad you said for it to stop. Great job on looking out for the
meaning of the mailing list. For the new posters

Some sad news to pass along for those of you who didn't know.
Allan Melvin, a character actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on
The Brady Bunch, has died. He was 84.
Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home
Sorta' the way I always looked at it w/Andy's vocal complaints involving
Aunt Bee, was that he was anticipating the problems to be had if Aunt Bee
went ahead and did the things she wanted to do. He could use more tact and
diplomacy, but whining and no-no'ing Bee seems to be a natural thing that
I just wanted to tell you two feller's, that was great reading. Reading
about the WBMUTBB's early days was cool and is of big interest to me (as it
is to everyone else here)!!
I sure wish I knew about you guys back in the day.

The reason I picked on the spelling of Allan was because if you went to the
Mayberry web site and tried to search for the actor you would not have found
it if you spelled it with an E. And the reason I picked on the spelling of
Aunt Bee is because so many people don't even realize that her name
I can see why he is a favorite as he was able to play a good guy or bad guy
equally convincingly. It must be the actor in the man.
