Re: Mayberry Days during the week
>Hello , what are your thoughts on Mayberry Days during the week compared to >the weekend ? Holland - it all depends on what you want. There are a lot more people coming in early to avoid the crowds than there used to be, but you have the advantage of being an hour away and enjoying Mount Airy during the "off season" when downtown isn't as crowded. There are things to do during the week and that includes just getting a bottle of pop, sitting down and counting cars. The schedule is now online at https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html. Weekday activities include a guided backstage tour of the Playhouse, John Floyd "The Mouth of Mayberry" comedy show, and movies at the Earle. Other possibilities not on the schedule: - Walk right into Snappy Lunch without the line- Take your time going thru the Andy Griffith Museum without Bernie crowding you- Learn about Surry County music history at the Old Time Music Heritage Hall (included with AGM admission). The Women in Old-Time Music is their latest exhibit- Mount Airy Regional History Museum is downtown- Take a squadcar tour- Go see the world's largest open face granite quarry- (This goes for everyone) Stop in at the Playhouse and come say hey. I'm headed to Mount Airy on Monday and will be helping the Arts Council all week Safe travels,Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Movie Premiere in Mount Airy
Dan Roebuck, who co-starred with Andy Griffith on Matlock returns to Mount Airy after his first Mayberry Days last year to premiere his latest movie "Lucky Louie" on Thursday, April 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the historic Earle Theatre. He will be available for Q following the movie. Based on the description below, it appears to have a little Mayberry influence... "The story of a retired police officer, Wilbert Moser who is unable to solve a 50-year-old bank robbery. He eventually teams up with members of his Bible study, all of whom are ex-convicts that he arrested and rehabilitated. Together, and with the help of a Forensic Psychology major, Alex D'Ambrosio, the owner of the diner they frequent, Barney and the Lehigh Valley community, they solve the decade’s old crime." Mayberry Days Silent Auction Results
The dust has settled on another WBMUTBB Silent Auction and it was our biggest year with a total of $6,246 raised for the Surry Arts Council this year. So many people to thank for their help with donations, assistance, and bidding. We tried something new this year with the TAGSale "Buy It Now" price and that was a success in reducing inventory quickly and letting people acquire something without having to wait. A special thanks to auctioneers James Pierce and Eric Lowery for their willingness and abilities. Some valuable lessons learned having gone through a little different format this year. One is needing a couple more volunteers to help with some specific tasks so if you are thinking you would like to be a part of the fun, please let me know. I've had a bucket on my head since Saturday and thought about a couple new things we might try next year. There are things that came in this year that didn't make it out to the tables, along with items that have been waiting for years to make an appearance, so keep your creativity going to make those great Mayberry items and plan for our 24th auction(s) next year at the 34th annual Mayberry Days. RE: Gneral Mayberry Days Question
Holland - I don't think there is a wrong answer to what day is best, so I'll recommend looking through the schedule (link below) and see what is most interesting to you on the days you can come up. https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html A few things to consider: - Do you want to meet the special guests? Many will not be in town on Wednesday and there is no autograph session on the schedule. Thursday's dinner at Cross Creek has sold out and the only autograph session is there. - Do you want to eat at Snappy Lunch? The lunch line will exist every day, but be shorter on Wednesday. - Do you want to compete in trivia? That is Friday - Do you like beach music? Concerts on Wednesday and Thursday night - Want to see The Mayberry Effect Documentary on the big screen or hear Randy Turner speak about TAGS and the 40 Acre Backlot? Only on Wednesday. - Don't like crowds? There are a lot more things scheduled for Friday and a lot more people in town. - Want to get a MD22 postmark? They are only available on the same days you can make it to Mount Airy. H coincidence? Enjoy your time at Mayberry Days and let us know what day you made it. Andy Griffith comparison
The recap article of last night's Saturday Night Live hosted by Jason Sudeikis included a nice quote: "He possesses, and I know I'm dating myself here, an Andy Griffith-like persona — the hayseed, the hick, who everyone dismisses, yet inevitably almost always turns out to be the smartest guy in the room." We enjoyed watching his show "Ted Lasso" on Apple TV. Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Betty Lynn memories
We are all sad from the news of Betty Lynn's passing. I was very fortunate to get to spend time with her over the years and am grateful to so many people in Mount Airy who took care of Betty while she lived there. Here are some of my good memories of Betty... I first met Betty on a cold day in December in the early 2000's at a cast reunion event in Danville or Salem VA. I arrive way too early and noticed Betty sitting by the door smoking a cigarette. It was really cold so we chatted about the weather (insert "even high school kids" quote) since she was living in Southern California and I didn't expect her to be outside. She told me about growing up Kansas and being used to the cold and how much she enjoyed coming to different Mayberry events. After she moved to Mount Airy, she met our dog Rosie and always asked about her over the years and even called us after she passed away. Claire and I got married in Mount Airy and Betty was kind enough to accept our invitation to attend. She really enjoyed sitting next to our friend from Charleston, SC at dinner and listening to his southern accent. He still talks about getting a kiss on the jaw from her 13 years ago. Betty's memory was amazing. She and I were going through her vast array of promotional and other "Hollywood" photos from her time before and during TAGS and she had a story to tell about every one of them. Her memory is better than mine because I don't recall any specifics, but was impressed when she started talking about "this movie was directed by _. His wife and he also" She remember so many details! We will always think of Thelma Lou when we see her, but she did a lot of acting in her career. Betty loved cheeseburgers! Her favorites in Mount Airy changed over the years, but The Loaded Goat made the list. Cross Creek Country Club affectionately called her favorite cocktail "The Betty." It was a simple drink of Scotch on the rocks in a tall glass and a plate of lemon slices. She never had more than one and just kept squeezing lemons in as the evening progressed. When I went to Franklin Canyon Reservoir, I called Betty about having lunch (she was still living in Culver City). She was not able to join us, but was excited that I was calling from Meyers Lake. In the "small world" category, I took an FHWA class in Nashville years ago and was talking with the instructor afterwards when he mentioned going to SW Virginia next to see family. Turns out his mother had moved to Ridgecrest in Mount Airy and was good friends with Betty. She sent his kids birthday cards and always visited with him and his family when they came to see their mother. It certainly was special to call her my friend and I will miss her. Mayberry Days is nearly upon us and I am late in sending out a reminder that our annual WBMUTBB service project is coming up. After 20 silent auctions, we had a successful live auction at the Blackmon Amphitheatre thanks to Eric Lowery's talents and will do that again this year. We have another great line up of donations, including a special "Classic TAGS" Quilt from Pat Coleman. There will also be a "Scobeys" style Rummage Sale table with donated and duplicate items that need a better home than a box in the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Items will be priced for immediate purchase. Tables should be set up on the side of the stage around 10 a.m. The auction will be held after the parade at the Blackmon Amphitheatre starting at 11 am. Please stop by, get a free bid paddle, and support our chapter's efforts. It is entertaining to watch even if you didn't bid. 100% of the proceeds to go the Surry Arts Council for Mayberry Days. Big House IPA
If you find yourself near Columbus NC looking for an interesting place to eat, I can recommend the Iron Key Brewery. They have a good selection of draft beers (Andy's preference over a Sazerac) brewed on site including one called Big House IPA. The site was a former NC work prison that was closed and repurposed in the 60s and reopened as a restaurant in 2020. Many of the buildings are still on site, including Solitary (no more carefree hours...). Good menu selection and good people. The hostess said she wishes they had AC but appreciated the breeze from the fans after being reminded that the former occupants didn't have that (or likely peanut butter and jelly sandwiches if Barney had his way). Ernest T. Grass
My wife forwarded this press release about a newly recorded instrumental bluegrass jam called "Ernest T. Grass." It's a good song! If you subscribe to any number of streaming services, you can give it a listen through this link: https://clg.lnk.to/BCetg-s Arden, North Carolina (August 20, 2021) — Like its predecessors, the latest single from Mountain Home Music Company’s unique collaborative project, Bluegrass At The Crossroads, features musicians spanning the range from traditional-flavored bluegrass to today’s jamgrass — and, in a move that highlights the connections that join players of differing generations, too, this one serves up a brand-new take on a classic of modern bluegrass — “Ernest T. Grass.” Named after a minor but memorable character on the Andy Griffith Show and written by Ronnie Bowman and Dan Tyminski — banjo man Sammy Shelor’s Lonesome River Band colleagues from the early 1990s — the tune first appeared on Shelor’s 1997 solo release, Leading Roll. Almost immediately, it was adopted by parking lot pickers and semi-professional groups, and over the years, it has become an organic standard favored across the bluegrass spectrum, as liable to turn up on a Billy Strings set list as at a late-night North Carolina bluegrass festival jam session. Indeed, it was just this universal appeal that led series producer Jon Weisberger to suggest “Ernest T. Grass” for a session that would involve multiple generations of musicians from across the range of bluegrass styles. Shelor’s arrangement gives all of the players ample room to ring changes on the tune’s catchy melody and rhythmic variations as it gets passed from one to another in a fast-paced, kaleidoscopic whirl of contrasting tones and textures. Whether a veteran like Shelor or Wayne Benson (Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out) — remarkably, the session was the first time for the two to work together in the studio — or a relative newcomer like Carley Arrowood or Fireside Collective’s Joe Cicero, each contributes a unique flavor over the sturdy foundation provided by the Infamous Stringdusters’ Travis Book’s powerful bass. “I’ve played that tune countless times in my days studying bluegrass at ETSU,” enthuses Joe Cicero. “Whether it was on a stage or around a campfire, it was always one of my favorites to jam on. When I got the call to do a few songs for the Crossroads sessions I was ecstatic to learn I’d be playing alongside Sammy, Wayne, Carley and Travis—but when I heard we were going to cut ‘Ernest T. Grass,’ I was downright giddy with excitement. To record it in the studio with the guy who brought that song to life was really a dream come true. It felt like everyone was at the top of their game for that one, with Sammy at the wheel, driving it home.” Adds Arrowood, “I heard and played ‘Ernest T. Grass’ in jams when I was a teenager, and then got to meet Sammy Shelor for the first time and pick one-on-one at a festival several years ago when we had some downtime between sets. He’s such a great guy! It’s the coolest thing to be included among so many of my musical heroes on this tune. It brings it all together full circle when I think about playing it as a kid, and now playing it with the guy who made it famous in the first place. What a blessing!” Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Making the bed
> you still laughed out loud when Opie and his friend were trying so hard to > make up his bed. That is a scene that was cut from the Viacom edits so you rarely see it, but it is a great scene. My theory is they just let the camera roll and told Ronnie Howard to have fun making the bed. (well, its just a theory). Having digested more than my share of watching TAGS on TBS or WGN back in the day, I remember the Greensboro station aired (and may still) their own edits to include the epilogue and other scenes (e.g. bed making) and other scenes that were cut to make room for commercials. The DVDs are nearly 100% complete and it is fun to come across a scene that seems new - like finding a gem in a mine. Scenes were almost always cut when they didn't move the plot or be critical to the story, but they certainly gave life to the episode and the characters. Speaking of beds, to this day I make the bed like Aunt Bee did by folding back the top, laying on the pillows in the right position and folding the pillows and comforter back to top. Mayberry Days article
From an article in the Mount Airy News: Fans of “The Andy Griffith Show” often cite various “enduring qualities” that keep the show funny, relevant and popular today, six decades after the show debuted. The same can be said for the local Mayberry Days Festival, which is proving to be enduring itself, even in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Unless something drastic happens before then, the Surry Arts Council’s Tanya Jones says the festival will go on Sept. 21-Sept. 27. The only question is how much of the event’s activities will be held as planned or have to be altered based on statewide pandemic restrictions. Jones, executive director of the council — which puts on the annual festival — said what format the festival takes will all be dependent upon where the state is on Gov. Roy Cooper’s COVID-19 restriction plan. At present the state is in Phase 2, which limits outdoor gatherings to 25 people and indoor gatherings to 10, in addition to requiring individuals to wear masks and practice social distancing for many of those events. On Aug. 5, the governor announced he was extending Phase 2 until Sept. 11, to see what effect reopening schools and colleges had on the state’s virus numbers. Jones had hoped to have a more definitive answer on this year’s Mayberry Days in mid-August, but the governor’s moves have left her and the festival organizers in limbo, though determined to hold the event in some form. “We have the exact same position we had before, whatever the guidelines, we will honor them,” she said Thursday. “Whatever it takes to do that, we will do, but we have a number of events that can go on if the current guidelines, if he says we have to keep these in place.” Among those activities that can go on even under current guidelines are some of the fan favorites — the youth trivia contest, the World Championship of TAGS (“The Andy Griffith Show”) Trivia, apple peeling, pork chop eating contest, the cornhole competition, the Mayberry Days hay bale toss, and others. “Fans really enjoy those … all those things we do around the playhouse can still go on.” In addition, Jones said she and other organizers have added a few indoor activities that can include larger or smaller numbers of people dependent upon the statewide guidelines in place at the time. Among those are guided tours of the Andy Griffith Playhouse and the back stage area there, as well as new exhibits that will be on public display for the first time. One of those exhibits is called Betty Lynn’s Hollywood Squares, which will be on display as part of a painting class offered during the festival. “Betty was a painter, and most people don’t know that,” she said of the Mount Airy resident and actress who played Thelma Lou. “We have a TV screen in that visual arts studio, the video with Betty talking and showing the things she painted, so folks can find out a new talent of Betty Lynn.” The tours, classes, and exhibits will be limited to 10 people, including the tour guide, under the present state guidelines. If the more relaxed Phase 3 guidelines are in place, those tours and exhibits will be able to accommodate more individuals. Each year there’s generally a silent auction put on by one of “The Andy Griffith Show” fan clubs, but this year Jones said they will be holding a live auction at the amphitheater, with proceeds going to the arts council. She said bidders will be able to maintain social distancing at the amphitheater. The annual golf tournament, The Emmett, will likewise be held, though there could be some limitations on how many individuals can ride each golf cart. At present, only one may ride in each, with the exception of two per cart if they are family members. As for the various shows, concerts, and the parade — the fate of those components of the festival won’t be known until Sept. 11. If the state moves to Phase 3, she said most of them will be held, but if Phase 2 restrictions are extended, most of those will be cancelled. “Betty Lynn and squad cars will be driving around town waving to people,” she said, but the large official parade held each year will have to be cancelled. While the festival has grown to a full week in recent years, with concerts, shows and other activities starting on Monday, the official Mayor’s Proclamation for Mayberry Days still takes place on Friday of the festival week. That ceremony is still on target for this year. “Being in the amphitheater, we can socially distance,” Jones said. With the uncertainty comes an equal amount of questions about what guests will be able to attend. Not only will some of the musical guests have to wait to see if their concerts will be allowed, many of the other guests won’t know about cross-country flights and travel options until later in September. “That’s just something they’re going to decide at the last minute,” she said of the affected guests. “They’re going to hold on until the last minute.”

Clara Johnson's advice is running through my head right now. Now, it's no kerosene cucumber, but they could have used fresher spices and younger cucumbers. WBMUTBB Live Auction
This year has been extra busy for me and I realized I didn't even send out a notice about the annual WBMUTBB Silent Auction during Mayberry Days. In order to be safer during the pandemic our chapter held a live auction at the Blackmon Amphitheatre. There is not much good to say about the current pandemic, but going from Silent Auction to Live Auction would go in that column. The live auction far exceeded my expectations and raised $2,907 in support of the Surry Arts Council for Mayberry Days. Eric Lowery took command of the gavel and did an outstanding job as the auctioneer and I am grateful for his willingness to help with less than 24 hrs notice. Thank you also to Allan & Jan Newsome, Cory & Scott Higgins, James Pierce, Rebecca Spears, Dick Villard, Greta Hinson, Terri Champney, and the Surry Arts Council for the donation of time, talents and items for the auction. A special thanks to Dewey Lamb for earning a well deserved rest this year and still helping the cause with an extra autographed jug he had from last year. Also, be sure to congratulate Eric as this year's winner of the Mayberry Friendship Award and Dewey Lamb as the recipient of this year's Jim Schwenke Award. Both well deserved for all they do to keep the Mayberry spirit alive. Wynken, Blinken and Nod
Garrison Keillor sends out The Writer's Almanac daily email with poetry and other literary trivial trivialities. As an "avericious reader" I think Barney would have been a subscriber. Today's contribution is something that Harvey Bullock would have read as inspiration for Opie the Birdman. Wynken, Blinken and Nod by Eugene Field (Public Domain) Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night Sailed off in a wooden shoe,— Sailed on a river of crystal light Into a sea of dew. “Where are you going, and what do you wish?” The old moon asked the three. “We have come to fish for the herring-fish That live in this beautiful sea; Nets of silver and gold have we,” Said Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. The old moon laughed and sang a song, As they rocked in the wooden shoe; And the wind that sped them all night long Ruffled the waves of dew; The little stars were the herring-fish That lived in the beautiful sea. “Now cast your nets wherever you wish,— Never afraid are we!” So cried the stars to the fishermen three, Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. All night long their nets they threw To the stars in the twinkling foam,— Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe, Bringing the fishermen home: ‘Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed As if it could not be; And some folk thought ‘twas a dream they’d dreamed Of sailing that beautiful sea; But I shall name you the fishermen three: Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes, And Nod is a little head, And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies Is a wee one’s trundle-bed; So shut your eyes while Mother sings Of wonderful sights that be, And you shall see the beautiful things As you rock in the misty sea Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:— Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. And don't the trees seem nice and full Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

RE: Mr. McBeevee
If you get a chance to go to Franklin Canyon Reservoir to see where they shot the opening/closing credits Fishin' Hole scene, be sure to drive around the lake and be on the lookout for other locations. I recognized where they filmed Mr. McBeevee driving away in his truck by the concrete barrier and wooden guardrail. I don't recall a pole being there in 2003, but having that in the scene makes it more realistic. The road is now a one-way loop. If it was back in the 60's, his truck drives off in the wrong direction! Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Snappy Lunch Chili
***a nice breaded boneless pork chop with mustard, tomato, onion, chili, and cole slaw, on some good white bread. One of the tastiest - and sloppiest - sandwiches ever. JOE from G.I. Okay, Joe (and everyone else); what brand of chili? Personally, I like Bunker Hill Chili, no beans, when my sandwiches or hotdogs call for chili. Ron **Barn McLendon -- Years ago I had the pleasure of visiting with Charles Dowell after Snappy Lunch closed one Saturday and he told me a story about his chili. Back in the day, the phone company used to be right across Main Street and the ladies would come over for lunch. He got a few complaints about his chili and wanted to do something to make it better. He realized that a lot of leftover bacon, sausage and tenderloin from breakfast was going to waste once they started serving lunch, so he started grinding the leftover meat and adding it to the chili. The ladies at the phone company liked it so much, one of them actually came back after lunch one afternoon to let him know they really liked his new chili recipe. Reduced waste and happy customers - a winning combination! When I need a chili dog at home, I usually go with Hormel, mainly because it is usually available in the places I've lived. Nashville's own Vietti Chili is not bad and they have been longtime supporters of a favorite live music event. Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Every once in awhile my wife will come up with a good Mayberry reference. We enjoy sitting on the front porch at the end of the week with some liquid refreshment to count cars, wave at the neighbors walking by, and watch folks come in from the suburbs and try to parallel park on the street. Mayberry in New Orleans
I was in New Orleans last week for a conference and had a couple good Mayberry connections. We had dinner at Antoine's and it has photos of famous people who had eaten there (plus Sazerac, Baked Alaska, and escargot on the menu). My friend found the Don Knotts autographed Barney Fife picture. Interestingly, there is an Escargot Club that has their own room in the back. They were pretty dressed up in the photos, so I'm guessing they ate the snails rather than step on them. The next day we toured the Sazerac House distillery and I learned all about the "New Orleans drink" and got to enjoy the city's official drink. The good things you learn from The Andy Griffith Show. Dream job
I recently met a guy who used to work for WRAL, the CBS affiliate in Raleigh. We were talking TAGS and he said back in the 80's he was working in their promotions department and one of his jobs was to spend hours a day watching TAGS to pull clips for special commercials they would run before week long run of themed episodes. Getting paid to watch TAGS!! I believe it was a TV station in Raleigh that decided some new dating reality show was a little more risque for their tastes so they decided they would air TAGS instead. They missed a golden opportunity to show select TAGS episodes about love or lost love. To start the new year, let's put on our programmers hat and put together 5 themed episodes. I'll start with an easy one on Love: Monday: Barney and Thelma Lou, Pffft Tuesday: Goober and the Art of Love Wednesday: Class Reunion Thursday: Cyrano Andy Friday: A Wife for Andy "Floyd, what do you know about love?" With the Digest laying low over the summer, I failed to send out a reminder about the WBMUTBB Silent Auction during Mayberry Days. This coming Saturday will be our 20th one! We'll be set up in front of the Playhouse (under some shade tents!) Most people are aware of what it is all about, so I won't go into the details beyond a brief reminder to email me directly if you want more info or have something to donate. Many thanks to everyone who has already done so. It is most helpful to know what is coming in advance so I can make a bid sheet before Saturday morning. I'll offer the idea up to the Digest with the one below and encourage you to submit your ranking as well as new ones (episodes, people, places, activities, etc.) to rank and defend. Moonshiners in Mayberry: - Morrison Sisters - Rafe Hollister - Big Jack Anderson My Win-Place-Show: 1. Big Jack Anderson - ingenious location for a moonshine still and likely would not have been caught if Opie wasn't so good at baseball. 2. Morrison Sisters - crafty women by eliminating their competition, but were bound to get caught with people stopping by their greenhouse to buy flowers. 3. A cup of the ol' java
Did you know Weaver's Department Store now carries Mayberry's Finest coffee? Santa stuffed some in Claire's stocking and she gave it high marks (which is saying something coming from her). https://www.weaversdepartmentstore.com/catalog.php?category=84 I don't know how many different General Foods products were part of the ending commercial, but Sanka coffee was a pretty regular spot (and Mayberry's Finest coffee is a LOT better tasting). Andy and Barney drank coffee pretty regularly on the show and I think that is one thing that helped give Mayberry it's authenticity. Has anyone ever developed a list of episodes that includes coffee? Perhaps we can on WBMUTBB. I think this shows up a couple times, but using a saucer as a lid for the little coffee pot in the back of the Courthouse was something that my friend Trisha always loved. Andy/TAGS Sightings
I've collected a few Andy Griffith/TAGS sightings outside of TAGS and thought I would pass them along... - Andy and The County Boys are featured in a display on Bluegrass in Pop Culture at the new International Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum in Owensboro KY along with Martha White Flour, Beverly Hillbillies, Flatt & Scruggs in The Story of Bonny and Clyde. - IBMA Hall of Fame includes The Dillards, Clarence White and Roland White and their plaques reference them being on TAGS. A photo of The Dillards (probably taken early 90's) is featured prominently as you walk upstairs to the Hall of Fame room. - IBMA has been collecting oral/video histories from various bluegrass artists. The interview with The Dillards was done with all four original members in 2006. It is 2+ hrs long and I listened to about half at the museum. Try as I might to find its location online, access may only be thru the Museum or Univ of Kentucky. I'll share a link if I can find it. - Ray Stevens recently opened up "Caba-Ray" in Nashville and there is a slide show of photos that cycle through at the Piano Bar and they are wallpaper in the performance room. Andy Griffith is featured in one of the photos with The Jordanaires, who sang regularly with Elvis. I would guess this photo was from the late 70's based on hairstyle and apparel of one of the singers. Andy is post-Mayberry/pre-Matlock. - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a show on Amazon Prime. The second season takes place in the late 50's and there is a scene with someone watching TV and it is Andy Griffith as a guest on a television show. It is just playing in the background on Mrs. Maizel and I did not recognize the host, but based on IMDB, I bet it his 1957 appearance on The Steve Allen Show. I bet someone who has seen Mrs. Maisel (2nd or 3rd eps in Season 2) can confirm. http://www.bluegrassmuseum.org/ https://raystevenscabaray.com/ Good times,Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

WBMUTBB Silent Auction
Thank you to all who helped out again with this year's WBMUTBB Silent Auction - donating items, helping on Saturday, and bidding. We raised $4,795.75 which is the second highest total in the 20 silent auctions we've had! All of the proceeds from our chapter's annual community service project go to the Surry Arts Council to support Mayberry Days. I'll second Maryann's special thank you to Dewey Lamb for once again bringing a car load (literally) of GREAT items for this year's auction. It is always fun to see the creative things he makes and how popular they are. Dewey - you're a prince. I real prince. I have to share a story I was told on Saturday night - two ladies were bidding on a box full of Dewey's items and the price was getting really high until one of them had to bow out. She was disappointed that she did not get the one thing in the box she wanted - the bottle of Colonel Harvey's Indian Elixor. At the hotel, she ran into the woman who she was frantically bidder against her later that morning and after talking about the auction, the women went back to her room, got the bottle and gave it to her as a gift. Mayberry Days WBMUTBB Silent Auction
We are but weeks away from Mayberry Days and the WBMUTBB chapter's annual Silent Auction. This will be our 19th auction and your generosity over the years has made this a success. We have some new friends who have created some outstanding items for this year, so please stop by on Saturday morning in front of the Playhouse right after the parade. For the new WBMUTBB members, the Silent Auction is our chapter's annual community service project to support Mayberry Days. For many years, talented and creative members of WBMUTBB have been generous with donations of Mayberry related things for the auction - handmade items, memorabilia, autographed items, and special one-of-a-kind things that you can't buy in the stores. All donations are tax deductible. There are three ways to help - donating an item, donating your time, and bidding on auction items. Bidding is from 10 a.m. to Noon. If you have something to donate, would like to help, have a question, or just want more information, please send me an email. Remember it is most helpful to let me know in advance of any item your plan to donate so I can have a bid sheet ready. It is always fun seeing the great stuff people donate and spending time with our Mayberry community that Saturday and hope you will drop by. We have been streaming "The Last Tycoon" on Amazon Prime and they occasionally have exterior shots filmed at Franklin Canyon Reservoir, which we know better as Meyer's Lake. Allan, Thank you for all your hard work keeping the Mayberry Spirit alive with WBMUTBB, many Mayberry websites, Floyd, supporting Weaver's, Mayberry Meet Up and all the behind the scenes things you do. And thank you to Ken for reminding us of the good work that Allan does (and don't underestimate your contribution in WI - just breathe in the old oxygen). You are so busy in retirement with your squad car that I wonder where you found time to work!? WBMUTBB Silent Auction 2017
Good news and a math error to report. I am pleased to announce that this year's total for the WBMUTBB Silent Auction was $3,935. I had an error in my new spreadsheet and double counted the cash, so the total reported at the TAGSRWC annual meeting was too high so my apologies for that. I will have to talk to Mr. Meldrim at the bank about using one of his machines next year! Many thanks to everyone who donated items, helped out and bid on Saturday. An extra thank you to Brian Rose for bringing the tent, to Scott Higgins for the help organizing on Friday night and of course, Dewey Lamb for another car load full of great items. The post-MD dust is still settling, but I'll get the donation forms and thank you letters out ASAP. Know that the money raised by our auction makes a significant difference to the Surry Arts Council and they are very appreciative of our support. Mayberry observations in life
A couple of recent Mayberry observations... - The Roadfood newsletter lists a good burger at Pick Quick Drive-In in Fife, Washington. No indication if it lays on your chest (you work it off, man!) - I am re-watching the original Twin Peaks on Netflix and realized they were using Franklin Canyon Reservoir (Meyers Lake to you and me) for some of the exterior scenes in the second season. Andy had Sanka coffee and Aunt Bee made good pies well before Agent Cooper discovered it. Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Mount Airy News
Thanks for the kind words, Janine. If anyone else who doesn't live there (I'm in Nashville) but would like to be an Ed Sawyer "tribute artist" and get the Mount Airy news daily headlines in their inbox, you can subscribe (or unsubscribe) for free at http://mtairynews.com/sign-up-for-notices#/ Mount Airy, like any town in America, is not "all Mayberry, all the time", but it is nice to share occasional stories from Andy's hometown that have a connection to him or TAGS with the Digest. Roland White inducted into IBMA Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Roland White, member of The Country Boys who were featured in the TAGS episodes Mayberry on Record and Quiet Sam, for his 2017 induction into the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame. His brother Clarence, who was inducted last year, was also a member of The Country Boys. The Dillards are also IBMA HoF members (2009), so TAGS is well represented. For bluegrass fans, keep an ear out for Billy Strings. An amazing young artist who did a great rendition of "There Is a Time" at a festival I was at a few weeks ago. Mayberry Days Update
Good news for Clint Howard but not as much for Mayberry Days. He was called to be on location for a new movie which will conflict with his plans to come to Mount Airy. He regrets not being able to attend this year but looks forward to returning again. Professor Brower's Lecture will held as planned with the two of them having coordinated so much Neal can still share a wealth of knowledge. Mayberry Days Updates
Things are shaping up for another great festival in Mount Airy this year and I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. If you've never been to Mayberry Days take advantage of excellent weather (according to Calvin Coolidge) and come to Mount Airy this weekend. Legitimate concern about the availability of gas, but my observation is companies that own their tanker trucks do have gas so truck stops like Pilot/Flying J and the like are good. Smaller convenient stores that rely on contract trucks to deliver their gas run out until the next delivery. Don't panic, but don't let the gauge go to E before filling up (insert Gomer's quote here). Most of all, travel safely and be an example to your friends and family and don't use your phone while driving. One change to the line up with Rodney and Beverly Dillard leading the Sunday Chapel with their Mayberry Values service at the Blackmon Amphitheatre. Tickets to all shows are still available by calling SAC at 336.786.7998 but many are nearly sold out. Tickets to MD17 are also available if you want to get good seats next year. Don't forget about the WBMUTBB Silent Auction on Saturday. Thank you to those who have reached out to me about your donations. We've got some great items again this year. Please stop by on Saturday after the parade in front of the Playhouse and say hey. It's BIG! Mayberry Days WBMUTBB Silent Auction
We're coming up on the one month before Mayberry Days and the WBMUTBB chapter's annual Silent Auction. This will be our 17th auction. Your generosity has made this event very success in financially supporting the Surry Arts Council's efforts to host this annual festival. The Silent Auction is held on Saturday of the festival in front of the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Talented and creative members of WBMUTBB have always been generous with donations of Mayberry related things for the auction - handmade items, memorabilia, autographed items, and special one-of-a-kind things that you can't find in the stores. Thanks to everyone who has helped in the previous 16 years. I hope you will be able to help again, but even more, I encourage others to get involved. It is always fun seeing the great stuff people donate and spending time with our Mayberry community. East to West
I was on a conference call this morning to make decisions on an upcoming meeting. The client wanted to start on the east end of the project and go toward downtown. When we were wrapping up, someone said "Remember, east to west." Unfortunately no one on the call was enough of a TAGS fan that a comment about Barney on the white horse would have been plumb wasted. Russell Hiatt
Mayberry lost another friend this week with the passing of Russell Hiatt, proprietor of Floyd's City Barbershop on Main Street in Mount Airy. Many of you may have seen the news on Facebook, but I had not seen anything on the Digest yet and am sure many of you who have been to Mount Airy met him and know that he was a special person. Here are a few articles and something that I saw that we can all be a part of in our own way on Friday at 1 pm EST: "To honor the life and service of Mr. Russell Ray Hiatt, also known as the real life “Floyd” of Mount Airy, we will line Main Street for a moment of silence as his funeral procession goes through downtown on Friday, May 6th at 1:00 p.m." http://www.journalnow.com/news/local/floyd-the-barber-dies-at/article_4a663073-16ae-54ac-9bec-7f3bfe36cedd.html http://www.wxii12.com/news/russell-hiatt-dies-at-92/39364564 http://mtairynews.com/news/40403/mount-airy-icon-russell-hiatt-has-died http://www.wfmynews2.com/news/local/mount-airy-fixture-russell-hiatt-dies-at-92/168376716 Many years ago, Russell told me that he was going to "cut hair for a few more years then quit... for about 10 years, and then come back and work another 20 years. I'll be 101 then and ready to retire." One of my favorite things about Russell (and his customers) was every time people stopped by the shop, he would stop cutting hair to say hello and more than once, the person in the chair would wait patiently while Russell would talk away or show them something new in the shop. I think customers expected getting their haircut by Russell on the weekend was going to take awhile. Rest in Peace, Russell and thank you for 92 years of sharing your Mayberry spirit with us. Floyd's eyes
Reading through our corporate newsletter, we worked on a transit project in Montreal called AZUR. “AZUR – which means sky blue in French – represents values that we identify ourselves with, such as safety, sustainability and resilience,’’ added Joane St-Onge, Canada East transportation lead. MD15 Silent Auction Report
Many thanks to all of the WBMUTBB members and friends who made this year's silent auction at Mayberry Days another successful event. The total this year was $3,703.25 (almost $500 more than last year). We had 94 items from 23 different WBMUTBB members who donated items and 11 volunteers, including a couple new ones who did great! I will be working to get the donation forms for your tax records and thank you letters out in the next week or so. A special thank you to Dewey Lamb who created 1/3 of the items available in this year's auction. He's a prince. A real prince. I appreciate all of you who stopped by to bid, visit and the fortunate ones who were able to take something memorable home. Our running total over 16 auction is up to $47,731.50 for SAC to host Mayberry Days, programs at the Andy Griffith Museum and other art programs in Andy Griffith's hometown. Keep a good thought for better weather next year when we can have it outside again. And keep a bucket on your head for donation ideas for MD16. It's BIG! Mayberry Days update
We are but a few weeks away from Mayberry Days. The lineup of special guests is impressive with two new stars, Barbara Eden and Clint Howard, attending this year. They are scheduled to appear at both the Matinee and Evening shows for Colonel Tim's Talent Time, hosted by WBMUTBB members David Browning and Allan Newsome. Clint Howard and Bruce Bilson will be guests at Professor Brower's Lecture. There are still tickets available for all shows - bluegrass, beach music, comedy, andMayberry. Tickets for Rodney Dillard's concert are in short supply, so you will need to call SAC for those. Everything else is available online through Tuesday, September 22nd, then you will need to call or purchase at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. The Historic Earle Theatre will be showing the movies "Harper Valley PTA" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo". Both movies feature Barbara Eden, but you will also see Clint Howard and other TAGS alums including Parley Baer, Amzie Strickland and George Kennedy. Those tickets are not online, but can be purchased at the Earle Box Office before the show. Thank you to all who have sent or offered up donations for the WBMUTBB Silent Auction. Please email me if you have something so I can make bid sheets early and get things as organized as possible before Saturday morning. Be sure to come out and see all the great things people have made and donated this year. Dewey Lamb has some amazing things once again this year. Bid early and often... If you have never been to Mayberry Days, plan to come see what it is all about and why people love to come back year after year. It's BIG!
