Woh! Congratulations to you and everyone who helped make this
happen to improve Commons.
As for are there other wikis who use more:
https://wmdeanalytics.wmflabs.org/WD_percentUsageDashboard/ says
cebuano, english and swedish have more articles in the main namespace
still that make some use of Wikidata's data - not necessarily
infoboxes. Also keep in mind that the number for Commons doesn't take
into account the category namespace so the numbers are significantly
too low.

Hi Mathieu,

I understand you care a lot about this topic and are posting about it
in many places but I have a personal rule that a lot of the people in
Wikidata know. I am willing to discuss and explain basically anything
on a calm and rational basis. (And I did this on-wiki I believe.) The
rule is simple: The more loud, aggressive and pushy someone gets about
a topic the less likely I am to engage. This rule has a simple reason:
I don't want Wikidata to get into a spiral of shouting. If we do this
people get into the mode where only if they shout they get heard so
they shout all the time. This is toxic for a community.
So I fear I can't contribute to this thread beyond this message.

Over the past 4 years - since the beginning of the development - I have
been doing the community communications around Wikidata. The main
objectives being that there is good communication between the editors, the

a healthy and welcoming place. Since then Wikidata has grown massively and
I have also taken on the product management for Wikidata. Both tasks are
getting too big to be handled by one person while still giving editors and
the development team the attention they deserve. Because of this I am now
looking to hire someone who takes over the community communications part. I

[Wikimedia-l] ArticlePlaceholder now live on first 4 Wikipedias

Hi everyone :)

Last year Lucie started working on the ArticlePlaceholder (
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ArticlePlaceholder) in order to
fullfill Wikidata's promise of supporting especially the smaller
Wikipedias. Today we have rolled it out on the first 4 Wikipedias:
Esperanto, Haitian Creole, Neapolitan and Odia. When someone searches for a
topic where no local article exists but Wikidata has data we will show an
ArticlePlaceholder with this information and encourage the reader to create
an article. I hope this will help these Wikipedias by offering their
readers more content and by turning more of them into active editors.

In order for the feature to work well we need labels for items and
properties in these languages on Wikidata. A lot exist already but if you
want to help out you can find items and properties that need labels in
these languages at https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-terminator and
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:ListProperties.

What we rolled out today as usual is a first version. Based on the feedback
from those 4 Wikipedias we will expand and improve it. One of the next
things we will do is add the option to translate an article from another
language if it exists using the Content Translation tool and fix known
bugs. Things we know are still broken or need work:
* language fallbacks in the properties are not working so you will see a
lot of P1234 and so on until a label is added on Wikidata in that language
* long identifiers break out of the identifier box on the right side and
don't look good
* right now you only get an ArticlePlaceholder in the search results when
Wikidata has at least 3 links to other Wikimedia projects and 3 statements.
We might need to tweak this number still based on feedback from the first
Wikipedias. We limit this in order to not encourage readers to create an
article that will be deleted right after they created it because it isn't
notable.

I have spent a huge part of my waking hours over the past 4 years
making sure that community always comes first in Wikidata. And I will
continue to do so. But that doesn't mean that everyone always gets
their way because that is simply impossible with the demands people
have for Wikidata. What I have been doing and will continue to do is
to engage with people on a rational and non-agitated level and hear
them out so we can find ways to make it happen or get a better
understanding of why something can't be done (yet). What we have
created through this is an amazingly friendly, hard working and
reasonable community on Wikidata that I am proud of every single day.

Ok. I think we can make the icon more colorful for example to draw
more attention to it. Mind you the icon is on-line with what you see
on Wikipedia as well. That is why we have it.

Yes that is indeed one of the problems we have identified for quite
some time already. It is high on the list for 2016. I hope we get to
it in Q1.

Ok so on-wiki documentation is not good enough. Point taken. It has
been written by editors who are familiar with Wikidata. Giving
feedback on the talk pages for those help pages would be valuable.

It is not as easy as that unfortunately. Potentially no item exists
for that subsidiary and then you need to create one. Also the
explanation for no-value and some-value in the text is important
(though we need to improve the UI for them). But point taken we can
improve this message.

Those should not have shown up for references and I am not aware of
issues with that. Which statement was this specifically? The
suggestions are not always perfect but at least the distinction
between properties in the main part of the statement and its
references should work very well.

It is not a text-based wiki. So yes some things work differently. That
doesn't necessarily mean they are worse. I dispute your claim that the
edit links on Wikidata are less prominent than on Wikipedia.

There is the equivalent of fixing a typo. All edits on Wikidata are
much more similar to a typo fix on Wikipedia than not. Fixing the year
in the date of birth of a person for example is pretty quick and I'd
argue easy. And since it is editing in place it is arguably easier
than finding the date in a Wikipedia article's infobox template.
Please go and actually try it our without prejudice.

I am the first to admit that we still have a long way to go when it
comes to usability on Wikidata but the things you bring up are not it,
Andreas.

That is actually not correct. We have built Wikidata from the very
beginning with some core believes. One of them is that Wikidata isn't
supposed to have the one truth but instead is able to represent
various different points of view and link to sources claiming these.
Look for example at the country statements for Jerusalem:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1218
Now I am the first to say that this will not be able to capture the
full complexity of the world around us. But that's not what it is
meant to do. However please be aware that we have built more than just
a dumb database with Wikidata and have gone to great length to make it
possible to capture knowledge diversity.

[Wikimedia-l] Happy 3rd Birthday, Wikidata!

Hey everyone :)

Today we are celebrating Wikidata's 3rd birthday. I've been with the
project since we started development 3.5 years ago and I can't believe
what a ride it has been and how far we've come.

As for every birthday celebrations are in order. We've created a page

can find editorials (by Harmonia Amanda, Ash Crow and me) about the

The primary sources tool and the extension that helps us check against
other databases are two independent things.
Imports from Musicbrainz have been happening since a very long time already.

The issue is that they do offer dumps but you need to set up your own
musicbrainz server to really use it. This was too time-intensive and
complicated for the students to make progress on during their project.
Because of this they decided to instead opt for another dataset
instead to get started. In the future Musicbrainz should still get
done. If anyone wants to work on adding more datasets to the tool
please let me know.

I am not sure how it all works but
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Module:Statistical_data and
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Template:Site_content are probably a
good start. From a quick scan it looks like User:Zolo set a lot of it
up so if you want to know more I'd start with them.

What is done there is fairly easy as it is done based on the data already
available in Wikidata. If you look at Wikidata items you will see "instance
of" and "subclass of" fairly often. This is what the charts are based on.
Depending on which other questions you want to answer it might be more
difficult.

I'm incredibly happy to share the news with you that Wikidata has won
the Open Data Award of the Open Data Institute in the category
publisher. The world is starting to notice that we have something big
with Wikidata.

I understand you've not seen much until now. But look at it from the
other side. Over the last two years we've created the base with
Wikidata. Over the next year we'll be expanding it to Commons. There
is still a lot of groundwork to do over the next months for us before
you can see something visible. But the point is you will.
Over the next week the Wikidata and the Multimedia team will publish
more plans. What is published so far has already been linked in this
thread by David.

Hi Ting,

It is too early for this discussion to be honest. The data in Wikidata
isn't up to it yet. Most of the taxonomy data isn't complete and it
isn't sourced properly yet. I've been talking about this topic with
quite a few people knowledgeable about this matter and taxonomy is not
as easy as it might seem from the outside. This needs experts and
time.
Besides this I believe any discussion like this should be started by
and in the WikiSpecies community.

Heya folks,

I just wanted to let you know that the next Wikidata office hours will
be on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Denny and I will be around on
IRC in #wikimedia-wikidata to answer any question you might have and
discuss. I assume there will be a few more questions than usual now
that we have a demo system. Logs will be published afterwards.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikidata: mockups for linking Wikipedia articles up for feedback

Heya folks :)

We've worked on mockups for how we think linking of articles between
different Wikipedias should work with Wikidata in the future. You can
find the mock-ups and explanations here:

It'd be great if you could have a look and give feedback either on
wikidata-l or on the discussion page on meta. This is the one
important UI change in the Wikipedias that we plan to do in the first
phase of Wikidata and we'd like to make sure this is solid.

As far as I understand it it shouldn't be a problem to store data from
the Author and Books template for example in Wikidata and use it (if
the community agrees that this is something that should be stored
there). Daniel said it needs a bit of modification on the client
extension that someone would need to do though.

Heh we don't want that to happen obviously.
I have to clarify my previous statement. The team doing the initial
development will mainly be focusing on getting this up and running for
the Wikipedias. (We will obviously keep sister-projects and projects
outside Wikimedia in mind while doing that.) However if people want to
help and work towards bringing Wikidata also to the sister-projects
then that would be welcome from our side. And of course they will be
able to use Wikidata like any other 3rd party as soon as that is
possible.

Questions regarding sister-projects and how they can fit into the
whole Wikidata picture are obviously very welcome at the next office
hours on Monday (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Events). If
there is more demand for it we can also do office hours specifically

This isn't clear yet. It's unlikely to happen before the end of the
initial development in a year. We still have to see what happens after
that. It might happen before 2015 or not.
