Re: [Wikimedia-l] Farewell video for Katherine Maher

2021-04-05 Thread Nadee Gunasena
Hi Tito,

Thanks for catching the difference in dates! That was my mistake, and I've
updated the dates on the website to reflect the due date for submissions,
which is April 12.

Regarding the video, I double-checked with Legal on your license question.
As the creator/ video organizer, we can decide how we use the final video
that is a montage of all the video submissions, so I would be putting it
under an open CC license. If you are asking about what kind of video you
can upload to Tribute, I would also recommend only using freely licensed
content. Let me know if that answers your question.

Thanks,
Nadee

[Wikimedia-l] Farewell video for Katherine Maher

2021-03-31 Thread Nadee Gunasena
Hello all,

As many of you know, Katherine Maher, the ED of the Wikimedia Foundation,
will be stepping down next month. Her last day is April 15.

While Katherine will continue to be a part of our movement, we wanted to
find a way to celebrate her and send her off. We’ll be putting together a
video montage of farewell wishes from the movement. For anyone that would
like to participate, you can record a short video with your message for
Katherine via your phone or computer by going to the Tribute webpage [1].
Please keep your message under 30 seconds! The deadline to submit a video
is Monday, April 12.*

If you have questions, please reach out.

Best,

Nadee Gunasena

*Tribute is a third party service based in the United States, with its
own terms
of service and privacy policy
. Please review their terms and privacy
policy before submitting your video. In order to submit your video, you may
need to provide Tribute with a name and email address. If you are not
comfortable submitting your real name or email, we recommend using a
username or pseudonym instead. By submitting a video, you are giving the
Foundation consent to include your segment in a video montage that will be
shared with Katherine.

Dear Erik,

Many thanks for all the help and support you gave Wikimedia Nederland and
myself over the past years. Whenever we had tricky stats-related questions,
we knew we could turn to you.

I hope to see you at many WMNL-events in the future.

Enjoy the freedom!

Best,

Like so many others, I was blown away by wikistats. I can’t begin to count
the number of times I turned to it in my years at the WMF. And it goes
without saying that Erik was an exemplary colleague, and a true gentleman.
Enjoy your well earned retirement.

Hi Erik,

When I saw the Wikistats the very first time in mid 2000 (?) I was very
impressed. After meeting with Erik, I respected the project and him even more.
The impact of the Wikistats to researchers and students around the world, but
also to the open data movement in general, has been incredible. I hope the
future historians will notice this.

Thanks Erik. Your new project looks very interesting.

His Wikistats project —with his signature

been much more than an "analytics platform". It's been an individual
attempt he initiated, and grew over time, to try and comprehend and make

most needed it.

Through this project, Erik has created a live record of data describing the
growth and reach of all Wikimedia communities, across languages and
projects, putting multi-lingualism and smaller communities at the very
center of his attention. He coined metrics such as "active editors" that
defined the benchmark for volunteers, the Wikimedia Foundation, and the
academic community to understand some of the growing pains and editor
retention issues

the movement has faced. He created countless reports—that predate by nearly
a decade modern visualizations of online attention—to understand what
Wikipedia traffic means in the context of current events like elections

or public health crises
.
He has created countless
 visualizations

that show the enormous gaps in local language content and representation
that, as a movement, we face in our efforts to build an encyclopedia for
and about everyone. He has also made extensive use of pie charts
,
which—as friends—we are ready to turn a blind eye towards.

Most importantly, the data Erik has brougth to life has been cited over

in the scholarly literature. If we gave credit to open data creators in the
same way as we credit authors of scholarly papers, Erik would be one of the

stretch to say that the massive trove of data and metrics Erik has made
available had a direct causal role in the birth and growth of the academic
field of Wikimedia research, and more broadly, scholarship of online
collaboration.

Like I said this morning, Erik -- you have been not only an invaluable

2016-02-09 Thread Philippe Beaudette
Anna, I'll never forget you walking up to me at a journalism conference and
asking for a job.

Then I'll never forget harassing you into taking it, when you had a better
offer somewhere else.

I'm glad you did; your expertise added much to the WMF, and I know you will
be greatly missed. However, I know that teaching was near and dear to your
heart... as you know, I told you once to follow your bliss, even if it
meant leaving the CA team, and I say the same to you now. The Wikimedia
movement will be greater for having you around generally.

Best,
pb

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Farewell <3

2016-02-09 Thread Josh Lim
Dear Anna,

I can’t thank you enough for all the work you’ve done to help us get to where
we are today. We wouldn’t have an Education Program, nor would we have been
able to effectively leverage our partnership with Smart Communications here in
the Philippines, if it weren’t for your efforts. For that, Wikimedia
Philippines is forever grateful.

But at the same time, as a Wikipedian, I am eternally grateful for all the
advice, the stories, and lessons and, most especially, the laughs. It was
definitely awesome seeing you at Wikimania. I was certainly hoping to see you
this year if I get the chance to. But either way, know that we will always be
here for you, as we hope you will be for us.

If we had to look for examples of awesome Wikimedians, you definitely count as
one. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything, and we will
definitely miss you. Hopefully, somewhere, someday, our paths will cross once
again.

Many hugs from Manila,

Josh

[Wikimedia-l] Farewell <3

2016-02-09 Thread Anna Koval
Dear friends,

During the past three years, I have been privileged to be a part of this
movement and this organization.

I have been honored to be your colleague and to work with you in service of
the sum of all knowledge.

In particular, I wish to note particular projects that have inspired me
very much.

   - Working with Philippe Beautdette, Maggie Dennis, James Alexander, and
Jan Eisfeldt to keep our community safe from threats of harm. [1]
   - Working with Patrick Earley, Nick Wilson, Erica Litrenta, Sherry
Snyder, Oliver Keyes, and James Forester on the rollout of VisualEditor. [2]
   - Working with Yana Welinder and Heather Walls to design a user-friendly
   trademark policy. [3] [4]
   - Working with Siko Bouterse to support Individual Engagement Grants and
   movement diversity. [5] [6]
   - Working with Jake Orlowitz to promote the Wikipedia Library and the
   Wikipedia Adventure. [7] [8]
   - Working with Jaime Anstee, Edward Galvez, Amanda Bittaker to encourage
   evaluation and learning. [9]
   - Working with Asaf Bartov to encourage regional cooperation in Central
   and Eastern Europe. [10]
   - Working with Floor Koudijs. Tighe Flanagan, Kacie Harold, Samir
Elsharbaty, Rodney Dunican, Sage Ross, Jami Mathewson, and LiAnna Davis on
   the Wikipedia Education Program. [11]

The Wikipedia Education Program is especially near and dear to my heart. It
is a means of educating readers, recruiting contributors, and creating
quality content. Since 2014, the number of education initiatives around the
world has increased by 36%. [12] [13] And 25% of all education programs are
in one of the regions that I directly supported. [14] I am so proud of what
they have accomplished. And I am enthusiastic about what great things they
have yet to achieve.

I want to thank and compliment my current manager, Floor Koudijs. She is a
competent, considerate, conscientious leader, and her diplomacy skills are
unsurpassed. I am confident that the education team and the education
program will continue to excel under her leadership. They are in the best
hands.

I want to thank and compliment my hiring manager, Maggie Dennis. She had
faith that, although I wasn’t an active community member, I could be taught
to be a good community advocate. I am so proud that I proved her right. She
taught me how to work in accordance with and to have the utmost respect for
the wiki way. [15]

Wikipedia is a miracle, a monument to altruism. It is vital to the internet
ecosystem, and it is vital to the education system. I hope that more young
people especially will find their way to it and help out. And when they do,
I hope that they are met with wise mentorship from veteran community
members, just as I was.

I intend to remain a Wikipedian even after I am no longer a WMF staff
member. And, with that promise, I’ll see you on the wikis. [16]

All the best,
Anna Koval, M.Ed.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Farewell

2015-06-25 Thread Fabrice Florin
Hi folks,

I would like to thank all of you who have contacted me on and off-list with
your warm wishes.

Working with you and so many other community members is what made this job so
special for me over the years.

I will miss our collaborations and hope we’ll get a chance to work together
again down the line.

And yes, I hope to be able to contribute new content as a volunteer, now that I
will have more time for this type of work.

In the meantime, I invite you to continue to work with others to grow ‘a
culture of kindness’ (1) in all that you do, so that our movement can reach its
full potential — the real opportunity ahead is a lot more about nurturing a
welcoming and productive culture than it is about building technology, and we
sometimes forget that.

Thanks again for reaching out to me, and for being such great partners — I look
forward to more great collaborations with many of you down the line. :)

Regards as ever,

Fabrice

Dear Ziko,

Thanks so much for your kind words, which mean a lot to me. :)

I too have enjoyed working with you and appreciate all that you do for our
movement.

I will miss our collaborations and hope we’ll get a chance to work together
again down the line.

For now, I hope to be able to contribute new content as a volunteer, now that I
will have more time for this type of work.

And you are in good hands with Ed Erhart for your Wikimedia blog post — I’m
really impressed with his work and he’s a great team player.

Be well,

Fabrice

2015-06-18 18:25 GMT+02:00 Fabrice Florin fflo...@wikimedia.org:

 Hello everyone,

After three great years working at the foundation, the time has come to
 say goodbye.

I will be leaving WMF at the end of June, to spend more time with my
family, focus on personal art projects and consult part-time on worthy
 causes.

I would like to thank all the community and team members I have had the
pleasure to work with over the years. It has been an honor to serve our
movement together — and to help our contributors share free knowledge with
 each other and the world.

I’m particularly grateful to Katherine Maher and our WMF communications
team for being such wonderful collaborators. I really enjoyed working with
them to manage and edit the Wikimedia blog, help grow our team and publish
some great stories together, to celebrate the heroes of our movement.

Going forward, WMF's Juliet Barbara will manage the Wikimedia blog, in
close collaboration with Ed Erhart. As many of you know, Ed is the former
editor-in-chief of the Wikipedia Signpost and has now joined our team for
the summer. I've worked with him for nearly a month now and find him
uniquely qualified for this project. Starting today, please contact them
directly with any questions about the blog (they are Cc:d on this message).

After June 30, you can reach me at fabriceflo...@gmail.com — or follow
 me on Twitter ( @fabriceflorin ) or on my blog ( http://fabriceflorin.com
 ).

The last three years have been an incredible experience for me, and I am
grateful for all that I have learned from so many of you. You’ve been an
inspiration to me and I have many fond memories of our time together. I
wish you all the best with the next chapter of the Wikimedia movement and
can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next.

 Best regards,

 Fabrice

to ensure that there is a smooth transition - and this is likely to
take 2-3 months. I am writing now because I felt it appropriate and
opportune to inform you as early as possible.

I want to start off by thanking the Wikimedia community and movement
for giving me this extraordinary opportunity. Working on something
like India Program has been something that has been professionally
enriching and personally fulfilling. Over the past 1 1/2 years, I have
been supported by so many of you - and I want to thank you for
everything you have done! The passion and intellectual firepower of
our community has been my constant source of drive and guidance.
There are so many examples of powerful stories from all over the
country: the incredible efforts put in by the IEP Campus Ambassadors
in Pune; the army of volunteers that drove the outreach push across
the country in the first few months of this year; the beautiful
stories of fantastic community initiatives from far and wide across
the country and sub-continent, and indeed the world; the remarkable
stories from so many communities - large, small and tiny ones!

I want to thank the team that I have had the pleasure and privilege of
working with - Nitika, Noopur, Shiju Subha. You guys have been
wonderful. The work that we are doing is experimental and we have
been innovating every day, and I know the circumstances have not
always been easy. Take strength and inspiration from the large number
of community members who have been touched by you and appreciate your
efforts and value your work.

I will send an actual over and out message later. In the meantime,
I will continue to work on everything that needs working on.

Happy Editing!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Farewell

2012-07-30 Thread Bishakha Datta
(Posted on India list and would like to share with larger wikimedia
community)

Dear Hisham,

I’m thinking back on your time here and want to thank you for so much that
you’ve done and built in these one and a half years. For setting up things
from scratch when there was neither a team nor an office and you were on
your own. For building and motivating a small team to venture into unknown
terrain (and for even daring to step into this terrain) without any
surefire guarantee of success. For tirelessly and successfully supporting
many Indic language wikipedias and the first-ever community-led
WikiConference India. For keeping up team morale in the difficult days
following the India Education program. For reaching out to hundreds of
people in India through any means necessary to create new editors. And,
yes, for being bold.

One of the things that makes this kind of work difficult is not just its
newness or its experimental unsure nature, but also its publicness.
Brickbats pour in much faster than bouquets in public fora, creating a
narrative of their own that is hard to buck. I want to thank you for being
able to smell the roses, for having a tough enough hide to survive the
brickbats while continuing to steer India programs and motivating your team
to do its best. I also want to urge the Wikimedia India community to be
constructive and rigorous in holding India programs accountable in its next
avatar - without being destructive or personal.

You’ve laid a very solid foundation for India programs that I expect the
team will continue to build on. I hope you enjoy your remaining time here
and leave with many more good memories than bad.

Will miss you, my friend!

Bishakha
