I was thinking of using the crossroads but I wanted to see how long it
would it be before it was mentioned.  I really like the software so I
think I will go that route.  Does anyone have experience with a large
amount of crossroads successfully?  Is the wireless card just the r52?

As far as the ns2's I will look at these, too.

My price range is around 125 +/- 25 but imy desire is a solution before

Obviously the most popular answer is going to be Mikrotik... but I really
really like my Ruckus gear.  I have not deployed it into a hotel

So to sum up... at Engenius price point Mikrotik... if you can pay a bit

At these freqs, 75ohn RG6 cable is usable with reasonable loss.  maybe
75ohm cpe is the way to go...

  Even in our area in eastern Indiana there is lots of 5.8 still

I am concerned about 700 Mhz antenna sizes.  Aren't sectors going to

  huge to get the 4 watt at the antenna?  I am also concerned about the
CPE Panel size. Going from a 15" Panel to a 20" panel gives us a lot
more wind issues at the client.

Don't get me wrong I am excited about the whitespace out come.  I
appreciated the work of the Whitespace committee.

We have tower owners who are concerned about the sizes of our antennas
now.  Change from a 12 foot 900 Omni to a 16+ foot 700 will not get
rave
  reviews.

Using StarOS, we have tested them with 3.5GHz antennas.  They got what we 
would expect them to get with respect to SNR, with a slight loss due to the 
3.5GHz antennas.

Two issues...

1.  We purchased some of the original XR3's, but then they came out with the 
new version XR3 - 3.7 which had different center frequencies so they would 
not associate with the original XR3 that we had at the AP.

2.  We have had 3 of the XR3 - 3.7 radios that have either lost a 
significant amount of signal from the AP, or stopped associating altogether. 
On the StarOS forums, there was some talk of this be attirbuted to non 
grounding thet antennas.  But as it stands, I think we had 3 bad radios, 
then the 3 that we originally bought that are useless now due to the center 
frequency issue.  At $260 per radio, that's alot of $$ in useless radios.

Yep. Diversity antennas can do that. I recommended Ruckus for this

Yes. 
Also very handy in keeping the beer cans cold... Note the strategic
positioning on the tall tower.. Allows for a restful pause during ascends
and descends.

You have to admit, it is pretty innovative, and very comparable to the
Rubber Maid Storage Bins being used for Battery Housing for remote Mountain
Top Antennas.

As far as I know, the white spaces will only be channels 21-51 excluding
channel 37. That's why they aren't included in the file. I could be wrong on
that but seems like I pulled that from some document somewhere. That was
prior to the ruling. If you find information to the contrary I'll update the
tool.

Jack, Yes.

They use multi-element / multi-antenna, adaptive beam forming, along with
some very nifty smart mesh. 

We replaced 10 buffalo's running dd-wrt (for a large sorrority house / about
60 + active College Students) with 3 Ruckus AP's. Our site survey showed
that two would cover it , but we decided to put in the 3rd as a 'filler'.
Two AP's are wired (as root) and 3rd AP is a Mesh.

The buffalo's would choke once every 10-20 days, requiring some TLC... The
Rucks AP' have been Setup and forget about them If it was not for a
power outage we would been seeing about 120 + days straight up time.

They also do some neat 'firewalling' within the unit.. We are using a mode
that allows the Clients (notebook users) to get IP's from the LAN side of
the AP's, and ONLY ACCESS THE INTERNET... They cannot access any IP's on the
LAN side of the AP's.
 
This is the "G" stuff.. Their "N" models with the new software are even more
impressive..

Yes Jack, I guess they have 6 or 7 antennas ver, horiz and 45* and they lock
on whatever is necessary . I do know it held a laptop through 5 exterior
mesh and plaster walls apx 40 feet apart and we still had "4 bars" and 5
bars after the forth wall. We have also used them in metal buildings, and
had extreme coverage between machinery. The only failure we have had was
repeting with the metroflex 3 times from a Linksys ap. But it could have
been the Linksys.
Everywhere we have placed them, have been very difficult wireless
environments, and the customers have noticed the difference and didn't mind
the added cost.

All Ruckus gear either has 6 or 12 antennas depending on the model.  But if
a reflection is the best signal from a device, or sending a packet via a
reflection is the best path it will take it.

All I can say is WOW!!!

I deployed an NS2 in a client mode deployment for testing and put it
through heavy usage (lots of voip/downloads/youtube etc) for 2 weeks. It
worked flawlessly.

I then deployed it as a hotspot in El Segundo CA and it's working great.

Initial deployment was under the counter (closed on 3 sides) at a
merchant and we got pretty good coverage of the whole strip mall.

Tonight I moved it up near the ceiling and coverage (as expected)
dramatically improved.  We now provide coverage to 1 square block or so.

I can't wait to load up a custom firmware image and start deploying a
mesh.

again in a couple of days and will confirm. BTW, his application is not 
indoor, but rather outdoor over several miles, requiring continuous high

When you say the unit is power cycled - is this removing the plug or a 
software reset?  I would imagine that if it is power supply related a 
software reset wouldn't solve the issue.

Thank you very much for your input - this is exactly what I am afraid of. 
While in St. Louis Tranzeo radios were having this problem.  Engenius 
doesn't have this issue, but it is far from flawless and to my knowledge the 
MikroTik OS does not either.  With a dozen hotels and many APs in each I 
don't want to have to worry about rebooting units to keep the guests as 
happy as possible.

[WISPA] unlicensed under 2ghz

Hi All,

In reading the FCC's TV whitespaces report and order I came across this 
statement:
"Supporters of a licensed approach also hold that there is no need for 
additional spectrum

for unlicensed devices. In this regard, Qualcomm submits that there is no 
evidence that consumers have

had to return unlicensed devices because the unlicensed spectrum is too 
crowded.48 The Association for

Maximum Service Television and the National Association of Broadcasters, in 
joint comments

(MSTV/NAB), add there is over 100 megahertz of unlicensed spectrum below 2 
GHz and that 255 MHz

of spectrum in the 5 GHz band was made available for unlicensed use in 2003 
and so there is plenty of

spectrum available for unlicensed use.49 The White Space Coalition counters 
these arguments, stating

that the propagation characteristics of the TV band are superior to the 
other unlicensed bands for many

applications and that none of the other unlicensed spectrum is below 900 
MHz"



Um, where is there 100mhz of unlicensed spectrum between 900mhz and 2 gig? 
What's available that I haven't been using yet?

We actually did that. We used Outdoor stainless steel "garage refrigerators"

Here's another one:
I don't know if any of y'all ever heard the ramblings of what we did with
our Navini equipment years ago. But, let's just say that we ended up with
"data centers in the sky" which were 12 1/2' tall by 3 1/2' wide and 3'
deep. They weighed 3,600 pounds, contained Navini BTS equipment, a serial

When you say the unit is power cycled - is this removing the plug or a
software reset?  I would imagine that if it is power supply related a
software reset wouldn't solve the issue.

Thank you very much for your input - this is exactly what I am afraid of.
While in St. Louis Tranzeo radios were having this problem.  Engenius
doesn't have this issue, but it is far from flawless and to my knowledge the
MikroTik OS does not either.  With a dozen hotels and many APs in each I
don't want to have to worry about rebooting units to keep the guests as
happy as possible.

been testing the ns2, and he reports some sort of problem that shows up as a 
steady loss of preformance over time. They start out working great, but 
after a few days of continuous operation the net transfer rate drops way 
down until the unit is power cycled. Memory leak (or maybe a power supply 
issue)?

[WISPA] NS2 Feedback

All I can say is WOW!!!

I deployed an NS2 in a client mode deployment for testing and put it 
through heavy usage (lots of voip/downloads/youtube etc)
for 2 weeks. It worked flawlessly.

I then deployed it as a hotspot in El Segundo CA and it's working great.

Initial deployment was under the counter (closed on 3 sides) at a 
merchant and we got pretty good coverage of the whole strip mall.

Tonight I moved it up near the ceiling and coverage (as expected) 
dramatically improved.  We now provide coverage to 1 square block
or so.

I can't wait to load up a custom firmware image and start deploying a mesh.

I agree with snappy,  the Ruckus units PENETRATE and lock on with no
multipath issues. We use them for difficult or large home and business
wireless. We have had some in for over a year with no problems.  They will
even sort out and use a reflection !

Have you tried a RuckusWirelss AP (they make an outdoor unit as well).
They are a bit more expensive, but after you get over that pain, you might
not want to go back to anything else.

Actually I have more of a mountain of the outdoor units.  I used a skid and
fork lift to get them to the dumpster.  Though my real problem with these
radios is their inability to work well for a long duration of time with most
laptops and their inability to work well whatsoever with Intel wireless
cards.  Regardless of who's fault it is - Engenius or Intel - Intel is in
laptops, Engenius needs to adapt to this.

I think it depends on your price point...

Obviously the most popular answer is going to be Mikrotik... but I really
really like my Ruckus gear.  I have not deployed it into a hotel personally,
but I am selling it to people to do it.  Ruckus also has a team focused on
the hospitality industry... I think that (along with schools) is really
where its getting deployed.

So to sum up... at Engenius price point Mikrotik... if you can pay a bit
more I would choose Ruckus hands down (that advice being nonwithstanding of
being a vendor... we only sell products we believe in).

I just got an LED TV.  Wonder of wonders, THIS one picks up some channels. 
Even the old analog stuff.  There are a few digital ones as well.

Guess the TV receiver is just as important as our gear.

I'd not say that the OTA channels are any better than the Dish Network ones 
though.  Either way, going from SDTV to HDTV and 27" to 46" is pretty 
amazing!

NS2 is about $70-80 depending on where you get them.  You can have a 
RB411, R52 and indoor case for around the same price (ok..a little 
more) and have a better OS (even certified now).  You can, also, do 
a crossroads with indoor case at around $110-115.

Have you tried a RuckusWirelss AP (they make an outdoor unit as well).
They are a bit more expensive, but after you get over that pain, you might
not want to go back to anything else.

Actually I have more of a mountain of the outdoor units.  I used a skid and
fork lift to get them to the dumpster.  Though my real problem with these
radios is their inability to work well for a long duration of time with most
laptops and their inability to work well whatsoever with Intel wireless
cards.  Regardless of who's fault it is - Engenius or Intel - Intel is in
laptops, Engenius needs to adapt to this.

Yes. I have one deployed as a Hotspot right now (in use for about 3 
weeks with 0 issues)
and will be meshing out from it to provide internet to Downtown El 
Segundo California.

Silicon Valley. The quality of the signal off-air was amazing and really
popped off my plasma. Getting it direct with no compression...and for
free with a small antenna...was really great. I'll be doing it again
once I have the time to install a roof antenna on my new home in FL.

The best web site I found to select the gain of the antenna and set the
azimuth is www.antennaweb.org. It gives you a complete list of channels
available in your area and will display a street level view how to align
your antenna. I always believed WISPs should add this installation to
their business. This might enable you to somewhat package a "triple
play" offer using the off-air for content and the wireless for Internet
and voice.

tend to help support department know who was on the slicked up service
compared to those who like it natural.  Best to know who you're dealing

Could you elaborate on why this is a bad idea?

I'm slightly interested in it for low cost connections.  In my current  
area, I don't have a problem finding grain legs for AP sites. These  
would be dense enough that I could build a great network with white  
spaces cells and 5GHz backhauls.

But if I look farther north in Michigan, the forests are denser and  
the grain legs disappear. The terrain is flat enough that I can't use  
"mountains" for cheap tower sites. And none of the 900-2.4-3.65-5GHz  
radios are going thru the trees.

It seems like a PtP backhaul that would work ten(?) miles thru trees  
would be a great cost savings over building towers. Maybe use two  
channels for full duplex. The rural areas that I'm looking at have  
over twenty channels free. (thanks Brian Webster for your kmz!)

I have some Wi-Fi spray I use on client CPE when their signal degrades. Two
squirts and their old -87 become a -67 instantly!! It comes in several
different colors - - like wifi red, radio white and my favorite of all is
802yellow!!

I have several bottles for sale if anyone is interested. :-)

That's scary.  And that's only a receiver antenna.  So are we looking at
an extra trailer behind our install trucks to carry an 8ft x 6ft yagi as
well as 10 foot tv tower sections to get it up high enough and away from
the house.

Sounds like crap to me.  I probably have one of the oldest VHF\UHF setups 
(the house is 95 years old) there is.  I'm located probably 70 miles from 
Chicago's TV stations and I received signal just fine...  until the preamp 
went out and I gave up.

[WISPA] FYI Note: I have joined Aperto

Hi folks,
 
I just wanted to drop a note to the list that I have joined Aperto and
thus my Sageni consulting business will not be active. It is a great
move for me since Aperto now has a strong and primary commitment to the
WISP market, especially regarding 3.65 GHz where Aperto's historic
leadership with the 802.16 MAC can be put to good use. Most of you know
that my heart in this business is with the WISP space. Aperto is
U.S.-based and right-sized such that this market is a primary focus.
That fact and the respect I (and my former organization) have always had
for advanced technical competencies of Aperto were key to my decision to
join. Once I received direct and personal commitment from the new CEO
and his staff here about how central YOU are to the company now, I
agreed to join.
 
Please wish me luck and let me know if I can help.
 
Jack, this also explains why Sageni did not join WISPA. I believe Aperto
is now a vendor member, but if not, please invoice us immediately.

Joe,

It entirely depends on how many broadcast TV stations are in the NOLA area.
Obviously, there are more whitespaces in rural areas because there are less
TV broadcasters.  Municipal areas will have proportionately less whitespaces
available because those areas inherently have more broadcasters.

Who would the likely vendors in this space be?

but this is the second greatest battle we have come across (second only to
having unlicensed available in the first place) and we have won!  Congrats.
It appears the portable devices are held to 100 mw of power, while we have 4
watts (which is pretty much what we have everywhere else).  Four watts at
these frequencies will carry!
