There are a number of blackhole routes and ACL lines for unallocated IPs,
that's why it's so long. Probably overkill.

I'm not running NAT on the mikrotik, but I'm planning doing so with some of
these IPs.

[WISPA] Redline AN80i PMP firmware question

2010-02-10 Thread Steven G McGehee
Hello,

Was curious if anyone here uses Redline AN80i hardware, and if so, if
you had upgraded to the new firmware version that came out late
December. Specifically, I'm referring to version
"RL80PMPZ__1200_46.zip". We've been having several miscellaneous, bad
firmware problems with a sector running v11.2x and plan on upgrading.
Does anyone have any experience with this firmware version? Any idTable
issues? DFS problems? Any and all input on the matter is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [WISPA] FBI wants records kept of Web sites visited | Politics andLaw - CNET News

2010-02-10 Thread Glenn Kelley
 From BlackHat Convention:

The "backdoors" that Cisco and other networking companies implement in
their routers and switches for lawful intercept are front and center
again at this week's Black Hat security conference. A few years ago,
they were cause celebre in some VoIP wiretapping arguments and court
rulings.

This time, an IBM researcher told Black Hat conference attendees that
these openings can still expose information about us to hackers and
allow them to "watch" our Internet activity. Backdoors are implemented
in routers and switches so law enforcement officials can track the
Internet communications and activity of an individual or individuals
under surveillance. They are required by
law[http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/012307-us-govt-wiretapping-laws-and.html

] to be incorporated in devices manufactured by networking companies
and sold to ISPs.

In this report from
Forbes[http://www.forbes.com/2010/02/03/hackers-networking-equipment-technology-security-cisco.html?feed=rss_technology_security

], IBM Internet Security Systems researcher Tom Cross demonstrated how
easily the backdoor in Cisco IOS can be exploited by hackers. When
they gain access to a Cisco router, they are not blocked after
multiple failed access attempts nor is an alert sent to an
administrator. Any data collected through the backdoor can be sent to
anywhere -- not just merely to an authorized user, Forbes reports.

What's more, an ISP is not able to perform an audit trail on whoever
tried to gain access to a router through the backdoor - that nuance
was intended to keep ISP employees from detecting the intercept and
inadvertently tipping off the individual under surveillance. But
according to IBM's Cross, any authorized employee can use it for
unauthorized surveillance of users and those privacy violations cannot
be tracked by the ISP.

Cisco said it is aware of Cross's assertions and is taking them under
consideration. To Cisco's credit, it is the only networking company
that makes its lawful intercept architecture public, according to the
recommendations of the IETF, the Forbes story states. Other companies
do not, which means they may be susceptible to the same security
flaws, or worse.

Ours (from Lowe's) take a lot more abuse in bending then I ever expected.
Only seen two rods break in ~5 years.

I can attach those public addresses directly to the riverstone and they work
fine. However if I attach them to the mikrotik they get advertised over OSPF
and have local connectivity, but they stop at the border router on a
traceroute. However, if you ping a device using one of those addresses from an
external network, you get a response. So I'm missing something to make the
route bi-directional, if that's the right term.

This is what I have in the Riverstone:

325 : ip add route default gateway
362 : ip-router policy redistribute from-proto static to-proto ospf network
default
363 : ip-router policy redistribute from-proto direct to-proto ospf network all
365 : ospf create area backbone
367 : ospf add interface WISP-201 to-area backbone
368 : ospf start

You're not running NAT on the Mikrotik by any chance? What is the print
out from the Mikrotik when you run "/routing ospf export"?

Otherwise I would need to see what the route tables look like in the RS
and Mikrotik.

BTW...that must be one heck of a config on that RS if your OSPF config
doesn't start till line 365!

Can you paste `ip route print` and `routing ospf neighbors print` from

This is what I have in the Riverstone:

325 : ip add route default gateway
362 : ip-router policy redistribute from-proto static to-proto ospf network
default
363 : ip-router policy redistribute from-proto direct to-proto ospf network all
365 : ospf create area backbone
367 : ospf add interface WISP-201 to-area backbone
368 : ospf start

Re: [WISPA] Fish Tape / OT

2010-02-10 Thread Steven McGehee
Hi all,

Yeah we use fiber glass "push rods" from GreenLee. We picked them up at
Graybar, could certainly find them cheaper I'm sure, but we got them
years ago... anyway, they're flexible, slim, and work great in any
application where you have a decent amount of elbow room and don't need
to bend them too harshly. They tend to come in four sections of 6' with
a 3' glow in the dark stick too. They also have a removable hook that
you can thread into one end, that comes in handy from time to time.

Having a hard time following exactly what you are doing...can you
attached a network drawing with the routes? We use Riverstones and
Mikrotiks in our backbone with no problems at all and I have quite a bit
of familiarity with Riverstone networks (I once worked for them :).

I like how they are estimating by a whole order of magnitude.

My company is likely to hook up between 20 and 200 new customers this month.

[WISPA] Routing Help [Default Route to OSPF]

2010-02-10 Thread Paul Gerstenberger
I'm having a heck of a time setting up OSPF for my network. We've been running
a switched network with a Riverstone router on the border, but we've long
outgrown that configuration. I have a Mikrotik RB1000U in the rack running v4.5
that we're going to use for our expansion and convert existing subscribers over
to. If I can get the dang thing to work anyway.

So, here's what I got:

The Riverstone is still on the border, and will be until I can talk the
higher-ups into replacing it. It still works and has plenty of capacity for us
still, it's just that Riverstone Networks went under some time ago and there is
no support for these things anymore. Anyway, it's here, and it has the default
route to our provider. I have a new range of public IPs, and I need to have
those public IPs accessible from the Mikrotik[s].

At this point, I have OSPF running between the routers, both the Riverstone and
the Mikrotiks are advertising their attached networks, and the Riverstone
appears to be redistributing it's default route in OSPF. Everything works
locally, but I'm not able to get OUT to the internet from our public addresses
when attached to the Mikrotik.

BUT, I do have connectivity from an outside network IN to those addresses.
Something is not working/configured to make the routing bidirectional. I don't
understand what else I need to do.

If I directly attach the public addresses to the Riverstone, everything works.
I have allowed that network it in the applicable ACLs, etc.

Can anyone offer me some tips and suggestions? I've worn myself out
troubleshooting it, I just don't know what else to look for!

Thanks!

One other factor to consider. On Google's existing fiber nets, how much
of that traffic is outbound, how much is inbound? Likely they are a
mirror image of our usage. They have tons of extra capacity available
on the inbound side just waiting to be used.

I a bit curious...even with huge window sizes, the latencies would appear
to be the limiting

But, purpose-built movie-sucking-boxes from Akamai-type cache on the gig

Wholesale 1G costs less than $1k now, depending on the vendor. Also, when
you have a network as large as Google's, BW costs you less.

Also, just like you're oversubscribing that 10 meg pipe, they're
oversubscribing those gigs.

Re: [WISPA] Google to build ultra-fast broadband networks

2010-02-10 Thread Mike Hammett
All they would have to do is #1, which is easily done. They have dark fiber
all over the country, they can tap into it anywhere they like. Building
fiber networks isn't that hard and isn't that expensive in the big picture.

Most places already have clinics, most just aren't technology enabled.

#3 wasn't really necessary and was just meant to solicit rants from myself,
Brad, Mark, and anyone else that views that differently.

2010-02-10 Thread Mike Hammett
Wholesale 1G costs less than $1k now, depending on the vendor. Also, when
you have a network as large as Google's, BW costs you less.

Also, just like you're oversubscribing that 10 meg pipe, they're
oversubscribing those gigs.

I use the same things, love em! I use them in drop ceilings, can certainly
see them in the dark! They are also my favorite tool with vinyl siding. I
hate putting holes in vinyl siding so I use a siding tool to separate the
sections, push the rods in the gap at the corner of the house behind the
siding to where I want the hole. Drill, stuff it in, pull the rods back
out, put the siding back together.. No sign of ever being there.

I picked mine up at Lowes I think. Have 2 packs of them for extra length.
I think they were called "Fish Sticks".

It will be interesting to see what Google Execs will think of the project a

Google to build ultra-fast broadband networks

WASHINGTON - Google plans to build experimental, ultra-fast Internet
networks in a handful of communities around the country.

The search company said Wednesday that its fiber-optic broadband
networks will deliver speeds of 1 gigabit per second to as many as
500,000 Americans. Google Inc. says those systems will be more than
100 times faster than the networks that most Americans have access to
today.

In a blog post, the company said the networks will let consumers
download a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five
minutes and allow rural health clinics to send 3-D medical images over
the Web.

Google says it will seek input from communities that might be
interested in getting one of the testbed networks.

2010-02-10 Thread Tom DeReggi
I'd say, the press release is not in line with Google's Business model.

Google is in the business of collecting revenue, without costs, considering
they mooch off others' broadband networks without paying for access to it.

It will be interesting to see what Google Execs will think of the project a
year down the road, where they incur all the costs and no revenue. I dont
see the project being popular amoungst management.

Google makes a ton of cash by giving stuff away all the time -
have you ever seen an add on their home page?

Think about this -

When you go shopping - is the product you buy worth more than the fact the
store can market to Pepsi that you purchased Coke?
To Kraft Foods that you purchased something from a competitor?

They are a marketing company - funny - but most don't see them as such

Re: [WISPA] Google to build ultra-fast broadband networks

2010-02-10 Thread Jack Unger
Sounds a little bit too "dot.com-my" to me too. All PR and too little of
real importance.

I'd need to see which communities they choose. Hopefully they will
choose communities that have NO Internet access today instead of
communities where broadband is already available and a movie can already
be downloaded quickly.

As to all the hoopla about allowing rural health clinics to send medical
images quickly, that sounds like a load of bull. Is Google going to:

1. Build the fiber network out to the rural, high-cost areas?

2. Build "rural medical clinics" for the area(s)?

3. Cover the insurance costs for the 40% of the adult population with no
medical insurance and who therefore can't afford to go to the clinic for
medical treatment?

If Google is going to do all of the above then I say "Google is GREAT!
More power to 'em". On the other hand, if Google is NOT going to do all
of the above, then I say "Keep your damn Press Release at home until you
are able to put more truth into it".

NOW, on a practical note, what could Google in a partnership with WISPs
that would really bring win-win-win benefits to the public??

Re: [WISPA] Fish Tape / OT

2010-02-10 Thread Patrick Leary
Think you are actually looking for a rodder, not so much a "fish tape."
I assume you are running something through coduit that is partially full
or because your are trying to get past a crush of partial break (the
only two real reasons to use a fiber glass rodder). If you are going
into an occupied conduit, make sure to use some type of lube (minimum
like a Yellow 77). Rodders can create significant friction, especially
when being spooled back up (people tend to pull them out faster then
they put them in). Plus, it just helps the head to pass between tangles
or congestion. Finally, never force a rodder when it appears to have
come to a hard stop. Pull back, re-push and then it continues to hit a
hard stop at the same point (mark the rodder), then its blocked/crushed
and further attempts might damage things further.

This advice might seem off coming from me, but for those that don't
know, I spent nearly a decade on the wired side, including long stints
as a foreman in the field (fiber optics), which included very, very long
pulls underground, directional boring, aerial, trenching, etc. ad
nauseum.

Re: [WISPA] Fish Tape / OT

2010-02-10 Thread AJ
We've used a conduit rodder with mixed success in the past - works excellent
for buried conduit that is partially blocked; drop ceiling work is a bit
more complicated but for the majority of the time, if it's a drop
ceiling/plenum space, it's no longer than our standard fish tape.
