Re: [WISPA] Insurance

2009-02-25 Thread Tim Wolfe
Find a broker that deals with CNA. They are still in the ISP business.
Use 2 separate classifications. One is being an ISP and the second is
satellite installer. Most insurance CO's have no clue what a WISP is to
this day and will run for the hills when you describe your business.
They all know what an ISP is and have also been offering policies for
sat. installers for years. Since all you are doing on an install is
mounting an antenna and radio, it is no different than mounting a Sat.
dish so coverage is not an issue. Make sure you break out all $$ that
are charged for the installs and keep them separate in your books, as in
most states, you will be billed for that classification based on gross
revenue . It should keep your costs down Good luck.

Google GTC tech support. They are reasonable. Level 1 and level 2
techs allow them to get their costs down. If you have something
specifically for wisps that would be more valuable.

But there is a lot involved in doing this on. As a new customer of
yours, I would expect you to familiarize your techs with my way of
doing things so you can be useful for my customers when they call.

My business partner owns a call center and we have looked at doing
this a little without much interest in taking the plunge to do it.

GTC had a hefty startup fee (I think it was $5k) to have one of their

managers get familiar with my system and develop training for their
L1 L2 techs. Then they took the number of subscribers we had and
made the base monthly fee ($1 x # of subs). That gives you (1 minute

x # of subs) of 'tech time' per month. Any overage would be about
$.60 per minute for that month.

Not a bad deal. I didn't feel that the diversity of my system lent
itself well to a 3rd party tech support at the time, and since then
everything I have chosen to deploy has had a consideration given to
'Call Center Tech Support'. Whether we do the tech support or not,
it is worth it to spend time and money to streamline tech support
methods so we can hire support personnel that are further down on the

I'm using Star War boards. A little bit more than the trango s. The 2

Speeds are about 20+ megs or so and I cloak down to 5MHz and 10MHz

One of the things I've been doing is slapping up repeaters all over

Lately I've ran lmr400 into some of my customers attics and installed

Richard, A word of advice on competitors. If they were there first, I
would do my best to cooperate with them and coordinate channels and when
You fire something up for the first time, You need to call and ask if it
is causing any problems. In most cases, this goodwill goes a long way in
letting them know You are a professional and NOT an idiot that worked at
Wendy's drive thru taking orders yesterday, and now I are a WISP the
next.. It seems as though I find another AP every other day that some
moron threw up with a 1 watt amp and 15dBi omni hooked to their cable
connection, and they are trying to sell it. I will also mention that
sometimes no amount of goodwill seems to work, and while You may be a
professional, Your competitors may not be?. If You have to switch
channels on a daily basis to avoid interference?, then You need to go
back to the drawing board and re-design Your system to be better than
theirs. This DOESN'T mean that You should do anything illegal, just make
a better network than theirs. If anything, THEY should be the ones
having to switch around if they are non cooperative. I don't know why it
is, but some people seem to think that there isn't enough customers to
go around for everyone, when there really is. We have cable, DSL and 2
other WISP's besides myself, and it seems that none of us have a hard
time signing up new customers. When I throw up another PoP, I scan to
see what channels are in use, and how I can best avoid their systems.
When I put in a new backhaul last year using SmartBridges Nexus radios,
I called as soon as they were up to see if I had caused any problems to
my competitors tower that was less than 1/3 of a mile away. These radios
do a consistant 15Mb using 2.4Ghz and I had no idea how bad they would
stand on the spectrum to achieve that. As it turns out, I had caused no
problems because I turned the power down and used high gain antennas so
that I didn't spray RF all over the place. I still called them to see,
and if I would have caused a problem, I would have gone back to

Re: [WISPA] Best system for a new WISP

2006-04-13 Thread Tim Wolfe

I was thinking I would be the devils advocate, and ask this question:
Why go thru all the hassle of learning Mikrotik(Which, IMHO, Is a PITA),
when You can save the learning curve, and use Tranzeo, Deliberant or
even HighGain Antennas solutions that are cheap and easy to administer
and a M0n0wall box at the NOC?. When You combine the assembly required
for all the WRAP boards, buying the pigtails, and all of the other good
stuff that goes along with being a MT shop, learning the management GUI
etc., You could be up and running in no time with a M0n0wall box and
gear shipped directly from the OEM's all ready assembled and ready to
go. And M0n0wall is very easy compared to MT, and if You were so
inclined, You could use the default settings and have a fairly decent
network with an old P III and 512M of RAM, which is MUCH cheaper than
any MT box. Granted, MT has a few more features, but the average WISP
doesn't need half the stuff that is in there. Any thoughts?

As an insurance agent for the last 16 years in the state of PA(Besides

some negatives to just Not mentioning the fact that it has a bucket on
it. The first one is that when You sign the insurance application(This
info. only applies to the state of PA where I am licensed, keep in mind
the every state has different insurance laws, but almost ALL of them
adopted the laws from the state of NY, as they were one of the first to
actually clamp down and adopt them, and this is what PA uses), there is
a paragraph that says all of the information You have submitted to the
insurance CO is correct and You then sign underneath it. It is a great
possibility that by omitting the fact that Your van had a bucket on
it, the CO could deny Your claim based on the fact that You chose to
omit the information about the bucket on purpose, as You knew this would
stop You from securing coverage?. While I do understand that securing
the proper insurance is becoming expensive, maybe even out of hand?, I
do not want to see You or any other small CO lose everything buy trying
to cut corners and get around something by being dishonest?. Almost all
insurance have something called Good faith agreements in them. This
Good Faith agreement is based on upon the fact that both You and the
insurance CO have been up front and honest with each other about what
coverages You are receiving from the CO and what type of risk the CO is
actually insuring. They fulfill their half by giving You a policy that
specificly states what they will and will not pay for, and You fulfill
Your responsibility by filling out the application with all of Your
information so that the insurance CO can decide what to charge You based
upon the information You provided them. If You lie, or as the politicly
correct term used is Omit some vital information that would stop the

Re: [WISPA] Insurance for use of bucket truck or lift for installs.

2006-11-16 Thread Tim Wolfe
Tom, I do share some of same views that You have. I just thought it
would be a good idea to present the pros and cons of omitting
information. There are 2 types of insurance customers it seems?. The
first one is like Yourself. You buy the insurance because You have to,
and the thought of using it doesn't really cross Your mind for all the
reasons You mentioned below. If it were possible, I am sure that
insurance CO's would love to find a way to discern the quality customers
from the irresponsible ones, and charge lower rates based on this fact,
and the fact that the bucket is only used once a month?. That sad part
is there is no real way to do this, as insurance is based on the law of
large #'s, and in order for it to work, everyone must be lumped together
in one big pool(for lack of other words?). Your customer profile is
fairly common though. I respect the fact that when the truck is in the
field, only responsible operators like Yourself will be operating the
bucket, being extra cautious as to whats going on around You and whats
happening when the boom is moving etc. This is the way it should be at
all times. Now lets move on to the second type of customer(The most
uncommon, believe it or not?). This person usually does everything they
can to cut corners, not only with work ethics and install qualities but
also with their level of responsibilties in the day to day operation of
their business. This customer will hire the cheapest employee that will
work for them, skimp on safety and vehicle maintainence, owe $$ to most
of the vendors he or she does business with and they will usually try
and call their employees Sub-contractors, trying to avoid paying taxes
and workmans compensation to make more $$(This is really an entirely
different topic, but I am just using this as an example?). This risk
taking carries over to things such as the safe use of a bucket truck. If
You remember, I mentioned that the people that work for this person are
really only there because they can not find a job anywhere else, and our
business owner in question hires them because it is cheap labor. The day
comes when the bucket truck is needed for an install, and our employee
gets behind the wheel to do the job(Keep in mind that our employee was
up half the night boozing with his/her friends, and just found it their
spouse is messing with the neighbor). When at the job site, this
employee will not have very good safety principles, and will do
something really dumb like tear the service head for the electric off
the wall of the house and tear down the cable CO's fiber line, along
with the local Telco's phone systems. The reason I am mentioning all
this is because for the most part, 10% of all insurance customers file
90% of the claims for reasons mentioned above. This same customer will
also use their insurance policy as a maintainence contract, and try to
get the insurance CO to pay for things that You or I would simply say,
OK, this happened, but I will just fix it myself, as it was my fault in
the first place. I dropped a 4ft piece of pipe off of the roof last
year and it hit the only car parked on the entire street. It was an
older car that already had 4000 dents and peeling paint, but the damage
to the fender was $430. I just paid it, because it was stupidity in the
first place, and I didn't want my rates to go up?. Now, the other side
of this: We have an incidence where an individual needed new tires for
inspection, so using their really smart brain, they drove it home from
the mechanic that failed it, and slashed all the tires themselves. The
insurance CO only paid the prorated amount, as the tires were worn out
in the first place, so this enterprising individual got pissed, and went
and got a set of tires(That didn't match) from the local junk yard that
had been slashed in a previous crime, had them mounted on the rims for
the van, and then tried to claim a 2nd time that his tires had been
vandalized again. I guess You all figured out that this moron is now in
jail for insurance fraud?(For every one that is caught, 10 get away with it)
The reason I am mentioning all of this is that I am trying to show all
of You why and how Your insurance rates have been steadily rising over
the last few years. The bad thing is that even though I am an agent, I
still pay the same rates that everyone else pays. I also do not have a
bucket truck, as I find them useless for over 99% of all the installs I
do(I am sure there are some of us who would be lost without one?), and I
can not justify the costs for a device that will sit around most of the
time. Keep in mind that no matter who operates that bucket truck, and
how careful they are, it only takes a split second for something bad to
happen, and if that claim is not insured (Or the CO denys it) and it is
a large loss, The person without the needed coverage will be the one
getting screwed. It really could mean the difference

Tom, Wrong answer about the business liability insurance :-) . In most
states, the insurance covers ANYTHING that arises due to the vehicle or
its use. For instance, in PA, if You close the van door on Your
hand(even if the vehicle is parked and not moving) and break it, Your
auto insurance has to pay the medical bills. If the operator of the
bucket truck sends it through the roof of the house they are working on,
then the property damage coverage of Your auto policy(primary) kicks in
and pays for the roof. There is a chance that Your business insurance(GL
or general liability) policy would cover You on a secondary basis if the
coverage on the auto policy was not enough and You were sued for the
difference?(Varies by state). The legal term for this is called the
proximate cause of the accident or problem, and since the bucket was
attached to the van, the auto policy will cover it. This is why Your
insurance CO is pitching a fit about the bucket. Here is some more
insurance trivia that all of You should be aware of, as I for one hate
surprises. Did You know that if at the end of Your employees shift, You
ask that person to drop off a check, contract, pick up a part at radio
shack etc. and they are involved in an accident, You are going to be
sued right along with Your employee and their (employee's)private auto
insurer will more than likely deny the claim, as most personal lines
policies do not cover any type of business use, period. The idea here is
that the accident in question would have never occured if You had not
asked the employee to run an errand for You. We also have some of us
business owners that do not own any private vehicles. If everything You
own is insured commercially?, Do Not EVER rent a vehicle unless Your
Business auto policy has drive other car coverage, because if it
doesn't?, You will be paying the bill for the accident, as most
commercial auto policies only cover the vehicles listed on it, and if it
'aint there?, It 'aint covered. :-(

OK, Auto insurance is designed to pay for anything that happens or

matter whether or not the vehicle is used on private property OR a

really 2 types of auto insurance, personal and commercial. Personal
insurance is designed for the average Joe that used their car or small

for Yourself or a Corporation, LLC etc. It does not matter if You own
the Corp. or You work for it, or You are just doing a favor for the
person who does own it.One of the main things that makes business auto
insurance so different is that it has to cover not only driving
accidents, but accidents that arise from what the different types of
things vehicles do in the course of their travels, as the average person
does not own a vehicle with a bucket truck on it, nor do they own a
tanker truck filled with Jet fuel that they drive to Church on Sundays.
Personal lines coverage just deals with one thing, accidents that come
from small autos hitting something else(For the most part?).
Business insurance covers a very broad spectrum of things that
specialized vehicles do, and there could be a very different type of
exposure the insurance CO would have to pay out on a claim based on what
the vehicle in question was designed to do. In almost every state, the
business auto insurance covers ANYTHING that arises from the use of the

a stream and local pond destroyed because 50 gallons of diesel fuel
leaked from the fuel tanks, or the Thermo King unit took a crap and all
10,000 pds. of frozen fish got stinky really fast?, it is covered under
the business auto policy and Your GL(General Liability) DOES NOT.
General liability insurance is designed to pay for damages done
through the course of Your normal business activities. This would
include things like causing a roof to leak during an install, or one of
Your employees flicking a cigarette into a pile of leaves at the
customers house and the entire place burned down. Depending on how Your
GL policy is written, or what state You live in, it may or may not cover
SOME of the auto related claims as a secondary coverage, but secondary
coverage ONLY. Most of the ones that do cover losses like this will have
a paragraph in the policy itself stating that if there is no primary
coverage from the business auto policy?, the GL coverage can not be used
as primary. There are simply no shortcuts when it comes to buying insurance?
Most states also make You carry a minimum medical coverage amount.
This amount is primary even IF You have workman's Comp. So if You have
$10,000 of medical coverage on Your business auto policy, and one of
Your employees falls out of the bucket while it is in the air and breaks
both of their legs?, Your business auto policy will pay the first
$10,000 of the medical bills AND THEN workmans comp. will kick in a pay
the rest.
With all of the different types of insurance You mentioned Cliff in
Your post above, each one has a purpose and will only pay out in a very
specific instance. There is no way that You could purchase just a GL
(General liability) policy and stretch it or do a little dance and hope
that You are covered at the time of a loss.

2. If you have employees use their personal vehicle for business use, THEIR
protection comes from THEIR policy coverage and is meant for their
protection. If YOU, as their employer, want to be covered, you need to add
'non-owned vehicle' coverage to your liability insurance. That is what
covers YOU in the event the employee causes a loss while using their
personal vehicle for your business.

Cliff, here again, personal lines policies will only pay for something
that happens when You are driving Your car or truck for personal

Save your money - you can do that with the 5a24 integrated antenna

The setup you have specified here will work right out to the limits of

2007-01-23 Thread Tim Wolfe
OK, Since we are on this topic?. I picked up a Samsung BlackJack about a
week ago, and to this point, I have some very mixed emotions?. I used to
have an old Palm PDA and I carried my cell phone, so You can understand
that trying to go to one device was a no brainer?. I love the look and
feel of the phone, as it is a LOT slimmer than a Treo or Blackberry and
the bluetooth headset and built in speaker phone makes it a breeze to
talk and work, drive etc. while on the phone. The screen is nice and
bright, and since it runs Windows mobile 5, it is fairly familiar when
You look at the screen and the way it interacts with the user. The on
board camera works great and takes wonderful photos after You get the
settings right(1.4 MegaPixel). Now for the bad stuff!. It EATS
batteries. Samsung must be aware of this?, as they shipped it out with 2
batt. in the box. If You leave the house with a fresh batt. installed,
You can bet that it will almost be out of juice by the time You walk in
the door at night?, so if You are a true road warrior?, You may be
screwed without a spot to plug in the charger during the day?.. It also
comes with a data/modem cable that allows You to sync. the phone with
Outlook on Your desktop. It even ships with a registered copy of Outlook
and the key so You can do a fresh install. All of that would be great if
I could just get the [EMAIL PROTECTED] phone to sync with the Outlook program!.To
this point?, it is a no-go!. Another negative is that You can only edit
Your appointment settings on the desk top computer. If You are on the
road and want to edit or add a new event or appointment?, FORGET IT!.
You will have to write it on a piece of paper and enter it when You get
back to the PC. THAT IS STUPID! Even though it touts being an MP3
player, You still need to install a microSD card for storage(extra
expense) AND there is no 1/8 phone jack for head phones???. If You want
head phones?, You have to buy a proprietary setup from Samsung and it
plugs into the same port as the data cable. What this means is that if
You are on the plane and You want to listen to music, thats great?, but
don't forget, You will also need to charge the batt. at some point, and
You CAN NOT do both, unless You pack the spare batt. along to every
place You go AND the portable charger that uses a 110AC outlet and a
small black charger box.

Matt,

It's funny you posted this message today I just picked up a new
test phone I am trying to replace my Treo 650. I grabbed an HP iPaq
6945 from Cingular for $189 (with two year contract) and have been
playing with it on an off for the last couple of days.

The biggest advantage to this phone is the built-in GPS, along with WiFi

and Bluetooth. There are some neat functions that are already built-in
to the main OS... such as the camera showing GPS coordinates on the
picture when you take it (if you enable that option). Also, many
commercial map programs (TomTom 6, etc.) work on this phone with the
GPS. With a simple car mount and car adapter, you have a full-fledged
GPS device built into your phone. There are also programs that will
connect to WiFi and update GPS coordinates to a website... so you could
have real-time locations for your installers with no monthly fee. ;)

It's running Windows Mobile 5, which is better than any other Windows
phone OS I have used, but still not as easy to navigate as the Palm OS.
The biggest feature on the Treo 650 for me is the SMS messaging. It's
easy to access (single button) and it keeps a chat dialog going with
each person you have talked to. I send and receive over 100 messages per

day, sometimes 200-300. It's quick, easy, and can be done with one hand.

If there was just a simple program that would function the same, the
iPaq could be a great phone for me.

I should also mention I purchased a Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. This is a

pretty cool device as well built in WiFi and Bluetooth, running
Linux with a nice GUI. Nice wide, bright screen too. It just doesn't
have a phone or GPS, just WiFi. Still pretty cool for that type of a

device.

Hey Gang, After reading this thread for a few hours, I told myself I
would shut up and just go away, but I must say, after pacing around the

mind?, I must say something?(Not that anyone gives a rats behind?).
Look, what Patrick has posted to this list(As much as I hate to say it,
and not because it's Patrick, its because of the actual subject?) is
TRUE!. If You are looking to find some truth to his statements?, just
wander over to DSL Reports WISP forum(
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/wisp ) and review some of the posts
that have been made there over the years?. At least every other day or
so, someone posts a question about how far they can hook up a client
using a 1 watt amp with a 15.5dBi omni. When I first started in this
business, if the salesperson at Ecomm, Winncomm etc. didn't know You?,
and You asked for a 1 watt amp?, they wouldn't sell it?, or at least You
had to answer a LOT of questions as to what You were going to use it
for?. Today, all someone has to do is go to ebay, or call any of the
popular vendors and in most cases?, it is on a UPS truck in 24hrs headed
for Your address. I am NOT blaming any vendor for this mess any more
than I am blaming the FCC or our industry as a police force, it just
needs to be said that it IS heading in the wrong direction quickly(I
think Patrick's mention of the slippery slope is accurate?). To add to
the mess is a list of consultants that have popped up as of late?. In
2000, if You typed in WISP as a search word?, You got almost NO hits.
Today, when You repeat this, the result is CRAZY! ( Results 1 - 10 of
about 3,430,000 for WISP-From Google!) . The current trend in the WISP
business is headed right towards the same debacle as the CB radio craze
of the 70's? (I guess I am showing my age, LOL!). That problem ended
because the spectrum was so wasted that You couldn't even talk to
someone down the street, and cell phone and other communications
technologies replaced the medium. While I do not know anyone in a high
position in the FCC at the time, I am almost positive that more than one
FCC meeting had people with their arms in the air going, OMG!, What are
we going to do??. IMHO.ahh, You know what?, scratch my opinion,
lets just say that in my experience, I know where this entire deal is
headed unless something major happens?, it will be a wasteland that is
sooo bad, You won't even have to put Your coffee in the microwave to
heat it up, just open the protective steel front doors on Your house and
set it outside for a few seconds and it is ready!( OK, a little
overboard, but I think You all get my point?). I have been in this
business since 2000. When I started lighting up PoP's in 2001, a site
survey yielded nothing, nada, zip zilch zero as far as other AP's or
competitors 802.11b AP's. Now, at those same PoP's, I can find on
average at least 8 to 10 active AP's. I know all of You have seen this?.
While some are just home user AP's, they are there non the less!. Heck,
the other day an AP showed up with a -58!!!. I traced it down to a home
user that had a 13.5dBi omni on his/her roof. While I have no idea why
they did that?(My guess is to provide better coverage in their house and
back yard or maybe share their cable connection?), it is insane that a
consumer was allowed to purchase that stuff!. If any of You think that
we do not have an issue with people violating FCC rules?, You had better
think again!. It is not just WISP's but all types of people that include
consumers, municipal, school and business IT depts. and a few
consultants who yesterday where saying Wendys drive thru, can I take
Your order please? and now today they are spouting out, I are a wi-fi
consultant. I just find it odd that the alarm bells are not ringing in
more heads than just a few of us?.

There is one thing that I failed to mention, and I thought it very
important to point it out?. While I do see all of this happening at some
locations, I must say that it has not hampered my ability to deploy or
to operate my business?.. There is a HUGE difference between a hack and
a professional. There are hacks in any business and these people are
never around for long, as there are no shortcuts in this business no
matter who tells You otherwise. The ability to engineer around these
obstacles is a known thing, and all of us professionals know this fact.
I personally consider someone running outside the regulations to be a
hack. Just like a cloud of gnats that are in Your face when working on a
tower or an install, these gnats eventually die or get blown away by
the winds of change, and they really are only a temporary annoyance?. I
made my original post to point out some of the shortcomings in the
current system. While these shortcomings are there?, they are no
different than any other business that You run?. Lets face it, if we
could all run and cry about things we didn't like to the Govt. agency
responsible for our line of work and get them to make changes that only
benefited our line of work?, the stock and investment markets would be
a perfect place?. The price of crude oil would be constant, all mutual
funds would have a guaranteed rate of return and that entire business
would be a utopia of sorts?. We all know that will never happen, and
that industry itself has fallen once or twice (Think-Great Depression),
but it is still here, as there are some really smart professionals out
there that see all of the current setbacks and figure ways around them.
Our business is no different. While it may seem as though I am trying to
correct my first post?(I am man enough to pull my own foot out of my
mouth), I am really not. I re-read what I sent out, and I just wanted to
make sure that everyone who read it took it in the right context and did
not interpret it as a doomsday message? (It really was not meant to be a
Chicken Little The sky is falling type post but it sure did look like
one?). I am just trying to point out some of the things that are
happening in our business, and those road blocks are happening in EVERY
business. If it were so horrible, most of us smart guys would have
sold out a long time ago while the going was good. The WISP business is
here to stay and the things that I mentioned in my first post are real,
but they are not insurmountable.

Please welcome another new WISPA Vendor Member - ValuePoint Networks.
For many of us the challenge of meeting the goals of delivering the
hotspot, hospitality, MDU and Muni Wi-Fi markets is a bit outside our
normal realm. We are used to owning our infrastructure and selling
Internet connections to a fixed customer base. The model of the Wi-Fi
hotspot is now becoming a bigger part of our business. I am glad to
see ValuePoint come on board with WISPA to help us meet these
challenges and add these revenue opportunities to our bottom line. I
know I am getting more requests every day from restaurants, hotels,
city government, etc. to deliver solutions to them. I plan to call on
ValuePoint for help in these areas of expertise and hope you will do
the same. Here is a little information from David Grissom of ValuePoint:

ValuePoint Networks supports hundreds of service and solution
providers world-wide by providing a complete line of rugged,
powerful, and highly reliable wireless products designed with the
solution provider in mind. Simply put, ValuePoint's products do the
job the others cannot, and for a price the others cannot match.

Founded in 2002 to develop products designed specifically for
hotspots and other public access venues, ValuePoint has quickly
become a leader in this burgeoning space, and has expanded into other
markets as well, such as industrial, WISP, MTU/MDU, and municipalities.

With Rugged Access Points, Advanced Gateway Controllers, and Mesh
Routers, shipping since early 2003, ValuePoint Networks' products are
deployed today in thousands of venues around the world.

Hotels, marinas, shopping malls, RV parks, MTUs, MDUs, and virtually
every imaginable location are operated using ValuePoint Networks'
renowned SuperAP, MultiAP, SuperMesh, and Gateway Controller products.

ValuePoint offers our customers superior solutions at much lower
price points, thereby minimizing your up-front capital investment.

Re: [WISPA] Vent pipe installs?

2008-01-12 Thread Tim Wolfe
I was reading this, and I just had to add my 2 cents (like anyone
cares.). If you are mounting on vent pipes, please use EXTREME
caution. On all of the newer homes, these pipes are PVC (The older cast
pipes are not a problem). The section of pipe that sticks out is usually
not supported very well. I have mounted on the vent pipe myself, so I
can't say I don't do it, but I will say that if you can grab the vent
pipe and pull it up and down and it appears to very loose, either do not
mount anything on it, OR, go up into the attic, crawl space etc. and add
a brace.

Almost 90% of the time, the pipe itself is only held in place by the
glued joint where it connects to the internal plumbing. It obviously can
not move sideways because it is held in place by the various holes it
passes through coming up the inside walls and roof. I know of a
situation where the CPE was mounted on the vent pipe (not me) and strong
winds twisted the PVC, causing it to snap off inside the home. The
result was a nasty bill from the plumber, as they had to cut away part
of the wall on 2 floors to repair it.

I guess the moral of the story is to just take an extra 5 minutes on
every vent pipe install and add a brace to the pipe under the roof every
time you use one for an install. It will save you lots of headaches in
the long run.

P.S. I only use vent pipes as a last resort for a mounting location. :-)

George Rogato wrote:
 Mike Hammett wrote:

Preferred vendor for vent pipe mounts?

Plumbing supply store. Buy a coupling the right size and type.

I should say, not all vent pipe mounts need the vent extended. And
sometimes, we can slip the cat 5 cable under the roof jack and into the
 attic.

I wouldn't be adding 5' of vent pipe myself, maybe a couple feet at
most. Like the other guy said, it's not always that stable.

Re: [WISPA] Small generators - cheap or inexpensive?

2008-02-18 Thread Tim Wolfe
John, We have a unit that I paid about $300 for from Tractor Supply. It
is made by Champion Tools and has 3500 watts continuous with a 4000 watt
surge capacity. It has a LOT more than 150 hours on it without a bit of
problems. They key in my mind and from talking to others is keeping it
properly maintained. Regular oil changes, running it under load every
month for maybe 10 minutes or so. I use it for extended power outages
and my motor home for awhile now without any problems. Sounds like the
Yamaha dealer is trying to make a sale?

John Valenti wrote:
I was looking around for a method to keep at least my backbone
running during an extended power outage. (we have had ice storms take
 out power for 4 - 7 days).

It seemed like the small generators might be a solution, the Honda/
etc name brand ones seem to be ~$600 for 1000 watts. And I found a
company that sells Yamaha 1000W generators converted to dual fuel (NG
or propane) for about $1000. They also sell a 2400 watt generator
that is triple fuel, gas/NG/propane that is tempting, even at $1600.

But then I ran across some imported 2 stroke, 1000 watt generators.
Harbor Freight has them in their catalog for about $150. I found a
similar one in a local store that is on sale for $99. The box says
it will run for 8 hours on tank of gas (at half load, 1.25 gallons).

These imported ones just seem like they are too cheap. And I'm not
too fond of 2 stokes. That Yamaha dealer warns that the cheap
generators are only designed to last 150 hours - but maybe 150 hours
 for $100 isn't too bad a deal.

Just wondering if anyone has thoughts or experiences on this issue.
 thanks

Re: [WISPA] Uh-Oh, they are ready to discipline Internet service providers

2008-02-26 Thread Tim Wolfe
Kurt, You can always do what we have since 2003, BAN all P2P traffic on
the network. It is listed right in the first paragraph in our TOS and
each customer is told upfront about it. I have turned off radios and I
have even pulled radios because of it. I guess the most important issue
is telling them up front BEFORE they sign up. P2P is the worst
application that can be run on a network of half-duplex radios. I do
have a few customers that use it for work related functions (Linux
distro's etc.) that I allow to run. One of the main things that really
PO's me is that some gaming CO's use P2P to distribute their patches and
stuff. IMHO, the cheap [EMAIL PROTECTED] should buy a server and purchase some
bandwidth instead of free loading on our networks. :o

Kurt - you got off WAY CHEAP.. The company asking is buying new steel
and you shouldn't have someone that isn't experienced with putting up
 200ft towers on the job-site

Typical pricing for a tower installation of ANY height is $60-$90 per
 foot.
That does not include foundation costs That includes the tower crew
showing up and installing the tower.

If anyone out there is able to get the brother-in-law deals you got...

 $500 rebar

sounds pretty reasonable. Did you already buy the tower yourself or are
 they providing everything?

We are installing a tower (super titian sc 100 200 foot) in east Texas.
 We
have got a bunch of quotes from different companies. We have received
between $12,000-$24,000 for complete installation. Is that a normal
 amount?

Re: [WISPA] Calling JohnnyO...

2008-05-29 Thread Tim Wolfe
If nothing else, the entire camp WTF experience was a fun one. If I
learned nothing else, I learned that riding around in JohnnyO's Suburban
at 1AM on an antenna farm is just like riding Space Mountain at Disney
world, only a HECK of lot scarier!.

On another note, the island was destroyed in most places. We worked for
two days straight replacing/repairing AP's and CPE's. One thing I have
to give Tranzeo, their radios are pretty tough. I found a few of them
ripped off their mounts laying under debris a few hundred feet away from
their original location. Replaced the CAT5 ends, plugged them in and
they came right back up!.

There was so much sand blown inland that they actually had to plow the
roads. It looked like a huge snow storm had hit the island. I hope they
never see another storm like that again.

Re: [WISPA] Ethernet problems

2007-05-30 Thread Tim Wolfe
I was reading this thread, and I had a thought (scary thing!, LOL), it
it possible that inside the conduit, there is a rough edge (maybe the
edge of a junction box if you are not using LBE's?) that scraped off the
outside covering and you now have exposed wires that you can not see?.
Perhaps the wires are exposed somewhere and a little bit of moisture
(even humidity) got inside the conduit and is causing the errors?. It
would really be a long shot, as this rough edge would have to scrape off
the shielding from both CAT5 cables, but I have seen stranger things. I
have also had problems in the past from bad ballasts in flourescent
lights. Even if they are a few feet away, they make all sorts of strange
things happen. Another place to look is bad power supplies. I installed
a radio at a customers home one time that had a power supply. It made
noise thru every computer speaker. As soon as you unplugged the power
supply, the noise went away. It also would allow the radio to boot up,
but the ethernet was just screwy, sometimes passing packets, sometimes
not. Good luck in your search!. Tim

Subject: [WISPA] Ethernet problems

I installed a customer in October and started having Ethernet problems in
March. I have an approximately 200' Ethernet run from the top of a TV
tower, to the house, and through the basement. I installed a Belden?
outdoor Cat5E cable, a Mohawk outdoor gel cable, a rope for future cable
additions, and an RG6 quad shield TV cable in a conduit.

Numerous times I cut off slack on both ends of the original cable (the
Belden). All that fixed the problem was turning off auto negotiation and
setting it to 100 HDX. A few weeks later the problems returned, and I set
it to 10 HDX. Now, maybe 6 weeks later the problem is back. I switched to
the Mohawk cable. I put on a different PoE injector and a different ECS
cable (PacWireless cable that provides an Ethernet jack on the outside of
the enclosure and has a 1' pigtail that plugs into the Mikrotik board.
Problem remains. The Mikrotik is getting power as it associates with my
tower and the two clients off an AP installed on the same board work just
fine. I tried different patch cables from the injectors to the
laptop\desktop.

I really don't want to pull 200' of cable only to have it not work again.

Does anyone have a good Ethernet tester I can borrow\rent? Not one that
just says if the pins make it (I had one of those and it said the cable was
fine), but one that is a bit more advanced. From my understanding, these
are $800 - $5k units. Someone close to Northern Illinois would be best.
I'm out of ideas.

Re: [WISPA] High Gain 8186HP CPE

2007-06-10 Thread Tim Wolfe
I currently use both Deliberant and Highgain products without any
issues. I mean, don't get me wrong, I have had some very simple problems
with both vendors, but all of it was corrected ASAP. The only way I will
use Tranzeo is for their 5Ghz units, as I have a bunch of them deployed
as backhauls. I had tried Tranzeo units in the past for CPE's, but the
firmware issues drove me nuts. The Deliberant units have all been rock
solid and do what they are supposed to do, keep my customers online. The
Highgain units have been great too. The OSBridge gear he sells works
really well, as I have a few 5Gxi units in place for both backhaul in
the 5.8Ghz range and PtmP in the 5.2Ghz range. These units are small and
light weight , almost to the point of looking and feeling cheesey ,
but yet they keep right on rolling along, so I guess looks are
deceiving?. The price point from these two vendors is also hard to beat.
The DLB units are around $150 each and the HighGain units can be had for
$99 each. I guess each person has their own opinion about how things
work. My luck is usually really bad, as most everything I touch seems to
fall apart and break (Maybe that was just a SmartBridges curse?, LOL!)

I have a pair of the OSBridge full duplex backhaul units on order, and
I am anxious to see how well they perform?. I am hoping to get around
30Mb each way with them, so I guess we will see how they do?.

Mike - I've had horrible luck with the High Gain products in the past.
Also
ran into some customer service issues when we had a problem with
them..
I won't rehash on here but feel free to contact me offlist...

I'd highly suggest to continue using Mikrotik or Tranzeo - I've had
problems
with Tranzeo products too, as well as some versions of MT software, but
nothing compares to the aggrivation I had in dealing with High Gain.

The out of the box Tranzeo CPEs for the price have seemed to be the most

stable / reliable low cost CPE we've used thus far.

I'm looking at moving to 802.11g for everything. Someone suggested to

What sort of mounting options does it have (can't tell from the

Normally I put up a UM and U-bolt it on, but my customer would like a
flat-mount solution.

JohnnyO, That suit was just to keep the bugs off. :-) When you have no

I did read the post. But as my post said:

I could not imagine what would happen if it hit him on the head.

Could not imagine...if Were the key words.

Nothing can protect from all scenarios. If so tower climbers would be
going
up in full body suits with Kevlar. Would look like space men on the
tower.

If you read the post, the wrench hit the ladder and then bounced into

Hi Folks,

We had what turned out to be a minor tower accident involving one of
our

tower climbers.

It appears that he had attached a wrench to the wrong carabiner on
another
climbers harness. When climber #2 detached the carabiner, the
wrench fell
without his knowledge. Climber #2 was up to 50' above Climber #1
at this

time. The wrench appears to have hit the ladder directly in front of
Climber #1's face and entered end-first into his mouth. This chipped a
couple of his front teeth, cracked one of his wisdom teeth, and tore a
quarter-sized hole in the soft pallet near the rear of his mouth. The

tear

required six stitches.

Needless to say, we are quite grateful for the outcome.

This incident underscores the extreme risk that our climbers operate

under.

It also illustrates how a very simple error can have potentially

devastating

consequences. His injuries, although quite painful, were not life
threatening. It could easily have been otherwise. Had the wrench
hit his

temple, forehead, or eye socket, it could have resulted in blindness or

even

death.

Our hats go off to all of the brave guys who operate in this
environment.

May God bless you all.

Re: [WISPA] Found a spot

2010-05-05 Thread tim wolfe
I read a lot and rarely post these days, but after reading this, I just felt
I had to add my $.02 I have been in the WISP business for 9 years. I
deployed into areas that had no options other than myself. Every time I
deployed, cable or DSL followed me within weeks of turning up an AP. They
offered higher speeds and lower prices. I initially thought I was doomed. As
it turned out, it didn't matter and in some respects, it helped as people
became more aware of high speed.

No matter where you deploy, people will never change in the respect that
they all hate the big CO's. They will almost always pick a local CO over
some big Corp that doesn't care about anything other than the $$. As
mentioned before, make yourself stand out somehow, some way. It could be as
simple as same day installs, on time appointments, whatever?

Don't let the fact that other forms of broadband exist in the areas you want
to work in stop you. There is plenty of room for everyone. Just take your
time, properly engineer your network, make it reliable and DO NOT cut
corners when buying your gear.

Another DO NOT is installing customers with marginal signal levels or
installing radios in places where something could make them stop working
over time (Like doing an install in the Winter, forgetting that trees bloom
in Spring, DUH!)

When I first started, I mistakenly thought that I MUST install and put
online, every person that called. I cut down trees, erected 50ft masts at no
extra cost and just did a lot of stupid things that wasted both money and
time.

Eventually, I learned that you need to pick and choose your customers
wisely. Whenever I get to a home and I am doing a site survey, I immediately
can not get a signal if it is full of teenagers or adults that are asking me
what programs they need to install so they can get all that FREE music and
movies that are on the internet. Some may say this is harsh, but hey, it is
my business and I run it as I see fit. I have also banned any peer to peer
use on my network and the customer knows this BEFORE I install them by
signing my TOS. I am not the moral police and this is probably another
subject for another thread, but it is what I have chosen to do.

Run your business like you would want a CO to treat you if you were buying
something. While I am not a terribly religious man, there is a quote that
sticks out from the Bible and it applies here: Do unto others as you would
have them do unto you. Follow this little parable and things will work on
their own. Try and cheat, swindle or just plain old rip people off and it
will come back to bite you in the a

If they don't gave the money to spend, there is no wy to overcome
that. I woul make sure there are enough people with disposable income
to make it worth your time. And it will take more time than you
 think.

I service an area with multiple isp's wisps as well as Comcast and
ATT. The key is to differentiate yourself. It could be service or
faster upload speeds or just a local business. Don't fear competition.

Re: [WISPA] Netequilizer

2010-05-06 Thread tim wolfe
I've had a NetEq box running for over 3 years. It is a plug and play setup
and does a great job if you like the hands off sorta thing. The bad side is
the licensing and the upgrading policy. IT STINKS!. If you buy a unit that
is only 3 months old off of Ebay, you can forget support. There was a thread
awhile back on the DSL Reports wireless forum. I remember reading it and not
liking the policies. You also have to purchase upgrades and some other
little quirks that just didn't make me smile.

For some networks, NetEq is a good solution. I've had one on my

 a real
lifesaver for us; it kept any users from monopolizing the pipe at
 the peril
of others. One major caveat, unless they've changed it, it only plays
traffic cop for one subnet. It will look for long duration, multiple
 thread,
connections and put 50 ms delays in the packets if the network gets
 busy and
leave headroom for the bursty users. Another good thing it can do
 is limit
the number of concurrent connections any one IP can have open. This
effectively throttles torrents in an agnostic way.
