Re: Mail TODOs synchronization

2008-04-29 Thread Ted Wood

Just a couple of thoughts:
- Yojimbo works with 10.4 and 10.5, but the ToDo framework introduced
in Mail.app is only on 10.5
- Yojimbo would need to be reworked (significantly?) so that it
supported ToDos when running one both versions, while providing the
enhanced sync feature of 10.5.

I'm sure that'll be no easy feat, but I hope to see it, as Yojimbo
support of the ToDo framework would actually make it useful for me.

It's unfortunate that Apple didn't deliver a Core Data solution (to
third-party developers) for proper Time Machine operation, but the
onus is on Apple to fix this one. You have the option of _not_ using
Time Machine where it doesn't make sense. Apple gave you that option,
and it would make sense to use it in this case. Exclude the Yojimbo
data store from being backed up and implement a different backup
strategy. Problem solved.

However, as a software architect, I agree with you on the "big opaque
file" paradigm... in my databases, I store a record of an archived
file in the database, but then the file separately. That reduces the
size of the database tremendously, still provides adequate performance
and indexing capabilities, and would be more compatible with Time
Machine. So, I think there's room for a middle-ground solution.

Re: Goodbye to Yojimbo

Don,

Syncing is a complex issue, for sure. But there's many other factors
to look at, and you might consider sharing a few of those details (if
you haven't already).

- how are you connecting to the Internet?
- what speeds/latency are you getting from your ISP?
- does .Mac syncing work for other applications, such as Transmit?
- how large is your Yojimbo data store? Does a smaller store sync fine?

I'll peruse the list archives for past message from you to see if I
can build a complete dialog of your experience. And then we can see
how to help you out.

Other than syncing, how has your experience with Yojimbo been?
Anything positive to share?

Sometimes when I click on a Library item, it doesn’t show up in the

Seems like tech support gives you an attempt or two, then gives up

1. Synching is such a problem (verified by things I’ve read
elsewhere) that BareBones is throwing their hands up.

2. BareBones just doesn’t care about losing a customer here and there.
I always thought that BareBones was a company of good reputation.

Re: Anyone have a good explanation why Automatic Synch doesn't work for Yojimbo?

1. Why doesn't BB Support ask the Synch mode setting when someone

[EMAIL PROTECTED] is the official support channel, not the

3. Is it just Yojimbo for which Automatic Synch mode does not work
reliably? It seemed to work for iCal, Address Book, Mail, Safari
Bookmarks just fine.

I think there's a lot more factors to look at beyond just the feature
not working reliably. I have mine set to "Every Day" since I only use
one computer regularly, so that may be a factor in my success. I
haven't had any significant issues with Syncing.

4. What is Automatic mode and why does it exist if the algorithm is
patently flawed? Given it is Apple's technology I don't expect BB
to fix that, however see the next three questions.

Automatic, by my best guess, means that it would synchronize whenever
there is a change made (at some periodic check), meaning it would be
more frequent than once an hour.

5. Has BB complained to Apple that Automatic Mode is unreliable?
Has BB filed any defect reports on this?

Sync problems are a hot topic, so I'm sure BB is doing everything
they can.

6. When I select Yojimbo in .Mac synch, why cannot BB put up a
warning that I am in Automatic mode and it doesn't work reliably?
Or maybe put that up when I select Yojimbo for synchronization.

Yojimbo/BB doesn't have control over the .Mac sync panel. That
belongs to Apple.

7. Has BB tried to get Apple to tell them how to use the Service
API to ensure Automatic Synchronization mode works reliably--if
that can be done at all?

See answer to #5.

Data Synchronization is a very sophisticated process. .Mac syncing
has working really well given the complexity of the systems
(disparate computers, Internet routing, etc)
