They sort of hide the free download page (well, it's not hidden, but there are no trumpets blaring, either). Can't blame them, I guess. Here's the link directly to the ZA page:

Just click the red 'free download' button after the first paragraph and run the installer when it's downloaded to your machine.

Comments:

AFAIK, it works on any flavor of Windows from 95/98 onward.

I have only found two parts of ZA to be confusing. First was the little popup that asks first if an app should be able to access the net, then if that app should be able to act as a server. Pretty soon I realized that there was nothing on my machine that *ever* needed to act as a server. If I was asking something to hit the net then, obviously, it needed to have permission, and, if something tried to hit the net on its own, I just tracked down the executable (the name of the .exe is listed right there in the popup) and decided if I wanted it to get out or not. It's almost always a no-brainer once you see what's trying to get out.

The other little confusion can occur when ZA senses a new network. This might happen if your ISP gets a new block of addresses and puts them online. When it sees those new IP addresses, it has to decide if they are friends or foes (if they're local to you or local to the ISP). Simple rule is *always* tell ZA to put newly found networks in the Internet group, not the local group.

Beyond those bits, everything else is smooth.

Arnie,

Here is web site, look around and read up on it and download the free version. Pretty simple, but you have to trust it and then keep teaching it to allow what you want to use and to access to the internet and from the internet. They start with a good set of rules, but sometimes it can be confusing. If you are on a broadband or always on connection to the internet this is a true must.

If anyone here is not running a local firewall, I *highly* recommend
ZoneAlarm. A copy of basic ZA is free.

And where does one go to obtain this "free" ZoneAlarm? Does it work on Windows 98?

This dummy needs to know :-)
