At Seesmic we are working to use XMPP for both chat between users of our system and to use PubSub for all events relating to users and/or videos with payloads as json, atom or xml.
We will have this available to any of our clients (or any 3rd party user of our API) Internally all video events are sent using json payloads between the various services and bots.
