Have you tried unplugging the ethernet cables when you power cycle by
any chance?

Both my boxes here experienced solid hangs at power-up (4 times out of
5) when I got them. But only when the network was connected. I
thought both of them were busted and almost returned them. The lockup
occurred way before any POST took place.

Then I found out that if I connected the boxes to one of my 100 Mbps
switches instead of the gig-e switch they booted fine. So I
considered it an unfortunate incompatibility between my switch and the
VIA Rhine chips.

You are also right that the amount of power down time had a noticeable
effect. When I first unpacked the boxes I was manually doing the
power cycling. Now that they are on remote power relay ports I
haven't had any issues. So I haven't spent more time looking into it.

I did talk to Søren about the problem but I haven't heard of anybody
else seeing it. Until now...
