I had a file already there (under home directory), but it contained
info about macports, so I think macports created the file. Since you
are using fink, it makes sense the file is not there already. (but the
again, I'm no expert on UNIX...).
I was given 2 options by other users, but still don't know which works
best...

JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home
export JAVA_HOME;
or
JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/
Home
export JAVA_HOME;

When i added that to the .profile, it also showed up in env and the
rest of the compile ran fine.
