With that said where does this "egress arrangement" fall within the code
sections previously referenced ?. The situation described indicates
this is a common corridor there serves four fire areas within a single
building.

It's a common means of egress wherein all areas of the building are
served by it, thus the total occupancy load of the building is
considered. Conversely if each of the fire areas had its own independent
means of egress then the occupant load of each space would be considered
separately.

Table 1017.1 is corridor fire resistance. In use S if the "OCCUPANT LOAD
SERVED BY THE CORRIDOR" exceeds 30 then a one hour rating is required or
zero rating with a sprinkler system pursuant to note c; "buildings
equipped THROUGHOUT with an automatic sprinkler system installed in
accordance with Section 903.3.1.1(NFPA-13-2002) or 903.3.1.2
(NFPA-13R-2002) [13R provision not applicable in non residential
buildings].

Interestingly the layout you described will already provide the one hour
corridor rating since the fire area seperations will be rated.

Look beyond 1017, how about access and travel distance ?

There is one common corridor shaped like a cross that cuts the building
into
4 parts.

Say what ?. Is there a common corridor or is this four separate
compartments each with their own means of egress to the exterior of the
building without passing through the others and within the non
sprinklered exit access, travel distances, corridor ratings, ?

Any code references provided in any of this ?

John

I am not sure exactly what their purpose is.

The chief building inspector says that they do not have to protect the
building at all because the arch. Has compartmentalized the building
into 4
- 3,000 sq ft compartments which kicks them out of the greater than 30
people chart.

The building is classified as "S" btw.

Therefore since sprinklers are not required he is happy with corridor
only.
I of course informed him of the "if you go you have to go all the way"
requirement and he blew me off and there we are.

We will not do this project as is, I was just trying to get answers
before I stuck my foot in my mouth again.

Is this a means of egress question ?

If so then take a look at the following 2006 IBC Chapter 10 provisions;

1) Exit Access 1014.3 - Exception 1 - "building is equipped THROUGHOUT
with an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section
903.3.1.1" (NFPA-13-2002)

2) Travel Distance Table 1016.1 Note c. -"buildings equipped THROUGHOUT
with an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section
903.3.1.1" (NFPA-13-2002)

3) Corridor Fire Resistance Rating Table 1017.1 Note c. -"buildings
equipped THROUGHOUT with an automatic sprinkler system installed in
accordance with Section 903.3.1.1(NFPA-13-2002) or 903.3.1.2
(NFPA-13R-2002) [13R provision not applicable in non residential
buildings]

Does that help ?

OK, got a architect and engineer that claim that they can protect the
corridors only on a mini-storage warehouse.
:

The IBC states that if the building has sprinklers but does not say
sprinklered throughout - has anyone else seen/done this?
