"S" 1 or 2?

Looks like it's S-1, Moderate hazard and the 12,000 sq. ft mark is the
limit for unprotected. So if he breaks it into the 3,000 sq. ft
sections and rates the walls then he's OK as far as the code is
concerned.

This is one of those times it's really hard to argue the moral high
ground if he's totally legal as far as the code is concerned.

I am not sure exactly what their purpose is.

The chief building inspector says that they do not have to protect the
building at all because the arch. Has compartmentalized the building
into 4
- 3,000 sq ft compartments which kicks them out of the greater than 30
people chart.

The building is classified as "S" btw.

Therefore since sprinklers are not required he is happy with corridor
only.
I of course informed him of the "if you go you have to go all the way"
requirement and he blew me off and there we are.

We will not do this project as is, I was just trying to get answers
before I stuck my foot in my mouth again.

Thank you,

Subject: RE: partial system

Is this a means of egress question ?

If so then take a look at the following 2006 IBC Chapter 10 provisions;

1) Exit Access 1014.3 - Exception 1 - "building is equipped THROUGHOUT
with an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section
903.3.1.1" (NFPA-13-2002)

2) Travel Distance Table 1016.1 Note c. -"buildings equipped THROUGHOUT
with an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section
903.3.1.1" (NFPA-13-2002)

3) Corridor Fire Resistance Rating Table 1017.1 Note c. -"buildings
equipped THROUGHOUT with an automatic sprinkler system installed in
accordance with Section 903.3.1.1(NFPA-13-2002) or 903.3.1.2
(NFPA-13R-2002) [13R provision not applicable in non residential
buildings]

Does that help ?

OK, got a architect and engineer that claim that they can protect the
corridors only on a mini-storage warehouse.
:

The IBC states that if the building has sprinklers but does not say
sprinklered throughout - has anyone else seen/done this?
