A lot of new installs will not want to see mech. tees. The impression is that someone just slapped together the system and it doesn't appear that they thought about fabrication and this is a field routed system, not engineered.
For renovations or minor system alterations they are generally accepted without question. I just saw a project with several hundred thousand sq. ft. under roof where all the outlets were mech. tees basically because the contractor gets bulk pipe shipped to the site, they cut to length and put outlets where they think necessary regardless of what was shown on the design drawings. No real fabrication at all. Threading machine and a groover on site with a few port-a-bands and they are set to go. Installation looked like @#$%!. BTW: this wasn't in the U.S. This could have been the basis for a book on how not to install sprinkler systems, and it would have been a BIG book. Craig L. Before I went that route I'd sure look at 6x6x2" GV tees. Thom McMahon, SET Firetech, Inc. 2560 Copper Ridge Dr P.O. By far the best way to do this would be to cut saddles in the field. By far - no galvanized welding issues, no threading ... way too easy. I'm trying to determine the least costly way to transition to the 2" branch lines. The two options I have are using 6"x2" threaded reducer tee or 2" thread-o-let and re-galvanizing the weld. The client requires galvanized pipe and does not want to use mechanical clamp fittings. Any suggestions to which method is the least expensive?
