I understand it that you need it under each deck, example; 2nd floor porch, 3rd floor head, it does not say that you install over the porch

Not the ceiling, roof or deck above that floor space. Example: Patio/Balcony protection HSW head at first floor ceiling height protects patio level space. HSW head at 2nd level ceiling protects 2nd floor balcony deck level. And so on and so forth. If you reach the top level without a roof or projection over it, in NJ it's "Un-Protected if I read John's post correctly. For the rest of us we install a almost useless head somewhere on the wall above the deck and move on. (Oh but if there were an effective heat collector, then we could really confuse the issue.) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Joel Chaim Sent: Friday, August 05, 2011 8:06 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: sprinkler heads in exterior decks or balconies Where I'm missing clarification is, how do I provide deck protection when I place the sprinkler head under the it? It says in the first sentence of the code (903.3.1.2.1 Balconies and decks. "Sprinkler protection shall be provided for exterior balconies, decks and ground floor patios of dwelling units where the building is of Type V construction.) and then it explains how (Sidewall sprinklers that are used to protect such areas shall be permitted to be located such that their deflectors are within 1 inch (25 mm) to 6 inches (152 mm) below the structural members and a maximum distance of 14 inches (356 mm) below the deck of the exterior balconies and decks that are constructed of open wood joist construction."
