Clark has very good and correct points on overflowing wicks- a leak can be caused by a bad gasket on the filler cap in addition to other points as Clark writes, I and others observed this at the 2005 summer steam up. The cap had been over tightened causing a distortion of the 0 ring seal. It took some time before an attendee spotted the problem, until then alcohol was pouring on the track and igniting! This had been happening for some time and you should have seen how delighted the steamer was when the problem was finally solved. Wish I could remember the name of the fellow who finally spotted the problem while all those "experts" like me stood scratching their heads and missing it completely. Was it you, David Leech?? Moral is; don't tighten your alcohol cap with a wrench, whether on your loco tank or Tanqueray bottle. ( btw, there was a hex or square head on the filler cap which invited a big hefty crescent!) I have used stainless steel mesh wicks but I believe only one of my engine uses them now and I have a stranded wick in the front burner to insure the SS wicks stay alight.-It's all a fun game! If yer loco steams well, something is wrong, so "fix" it (like the wicks) then start all over to get it steaming well- like reinstalling the wicks you you decided to replace!
