Wrote Justice Robert Jackson, who later served as a prosecutor in the Nuremberg trials, To
believe that patriotism will not flourish if patriotic ceremonies are voluntary and spontaneous instead of a compulsory routine is to make an unflattering estimate of the appeal of our institutions to free minds.
I have no objection to children learning the preamble to the US Constitution or the pledge in either form. I do, however, object to having them recite it by rote every morning. Why not just dispense with it and have kids recite every morning "Good morning, Mr./Mrs./Ms. _______"? I see no compelling reason for kids to have to recite the same thing every single morning. It's meaningless busy work.
