I'd like to thank councilors Kathy Lantry and Lee Helgen for jumping into our discussion forum over the last week. Our forum, can sometimes be a hostile place for elected officials.Being a politician, is no different than being a programmer, doctor, engineer... etc the best you can be is not wrong.
Its good to know that they are at least monitoring our discussions and from time to time, willing to contribute some information or ideas.
Some of the other local elected officials who participate from time to time, include:
Anne Carroll, School Board Dave Thune, City Council Al Oertwig, School Board Tom Conlon, School Board Kazoua Kong-Thao, School Board
And we know that Jane Prince, from council member Benanav's office is out there keeping an eye on us.
Thanks to all, who make this forum such a interesting and vibrant space for citizenship.
Best wishes,
But politicians, when they make mistakes, stonewall, ignore, wait for the people to forget .... etc (this has to change, we deserve better)
where as programmers, doctors, engineers make mistakes they do failure analysis, put procedures, checks in place to prevent re occurrence. So far are politicians are living up to their reputation. I think its time for our politicians to become true professionals.
Would abolishing the ambush agenda item cost the city a dime? I think not. would it impair the city council to do its job, I think not. Has the ambush agenda item ever been used for good purposes. I bet not, politicians want attention when they do good things for people the more attention the better.
Would passing code that warns future GSE wanna-bes that the city takes the Minn. first land use rule Minnesota Rule 7030.0030 <http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/arule/7030/0030.html> seriously and that the city won't be held responsible for lost profits, because a companies stupidity, and or lack of planning. cost the city a dime? I think not. (if this rule had been enforced I would still have all my hearing, lung capacity)
Would passing meaningful, enforceable noise ordinance. cost the city a dime? maybe but they can always hit em' with the same excessive use tax they bend me over with. I would suggest they start a dialog with Noise Pollution Clearing house http://www.nonoise.org/ to find out what works, and maybe become leaders in the fight against noise pollution. Maybe even celebrate national hearing awareness day.
If the above items were done, would St. Paul be a better place to live? I think so. Would it be a safer place to live? Without a doubt? Will it happen, not without public awareness, and support. Because breaking from the status quo is hard for anybody.
And I too am grateful this list exists, because it gives use a place to exchange ideas and hopefully make this a better place to live. Lets hope that future ideas don't have to born with so much pain and suffering though. (assuming any of the above happens)
I would like to thank all lurking politicians too, but unlike Tim, I expect more from them than an occasional fluff post, to toot their own horn. I expect them to be professionals, admit their mistakes (when legally possible), and fix them, and take care of the damages they caused, and not just wait for them to fade away.
