LOL!
Here's a 2030's solution for ya: have the jet owners get VTOLs and
jetboat limousines.
Or put the runway and taxiway on 2-foot pillars.
By the way, what's louder, a Gulfstream IV or a Cessna? Consider take-offs
vs. landings, fore vs. aft, etc. I'm not saying I'm pro- or anti-Holman,
but before people start the campaign to shut it down, they'd best be
prepared to know a thing or two about jet engines (and internal combustion
engines), especially with regard to advances in technology. Don't forget
that my boss is the former head of GE engines, and he is probably still
quite proud of the GE90, the sound of which you can compare to older
engines while standing under the MSP flight path down the "Mendota Trail."
I'm just warnin' ya... They'll say things like "in 50 years you won't hear
the SkramJett TVC15 engine at all!" And those "noise canceller" devices
people are using on planes are all the rage - that technology may well
scale-up to an exterior/urban/airport environment. Some day I'll be able
to quite literally tune you out! Not that I would, Chuck, but it might be
nice to have the capability.
At one time there were about eight or nine 3M Gulfstreams at Holman Field,
but don't quote me on that. That aerospace community is kinda like, well,
like the railroads! Might as well be a separate country sometimes...
Speaking of The Mine, I regret to inform you that this morning the Father
of Scotchgard (TM) Protector passed away. Sam Smith was a fine man in all
respects. All that chemical exposure and he still lived to 76 or so...
Please join me in a Tadcaster Ale in his honor...

The airport is owned by the Metropolitan Airport Commission, not the City,
so if the Mayor wants to find businesses that want to donate money to the
MAC he surely can. I would guess what would be more of a concern was to
read in the newspaper that there were 27 callers this year complaining
about airport noise with the airport as it is. I would guess that if the
money is found to build the dike you will see more of an effort from the
airport neighbors to close the thing down. Most major cities (like
Chicago) have gotten rid of their downtown commuter airports as a waist of
valuable land. Only makes sense that the Ppress would be advocating a
1930's solution to the problems of 2005.
