During the 3 years I worked as a counsellor at a juvenile facility in NJ in the 80's, the national statistics we had were that 1 in 6 children had been molested, overwhelmingly victimized by the very men in their lives who should have been authority figures, IIRC the perpetrators tended to be: fathers, mother's partner, close family friends and relatives, pastor or priest, teacher, neighbor, older friends. The facility was run as a household, where the kids stayed, and the staff would work regular overlapping shifts. We had all kinds of systems in place to ensure that none of the kids were ever in compromising situations with any of the staff. Some of the things the kids would say after they settled in and felt safe, were horrific. It's difficult for me to see so many otherwise seemingly rational adults defending the Catholic Church in public discourse. Where any person with a shred of empathy would express disgust and outrage, these people react by attacking the expression of those two human emotions.
It does make me wonder sometimes, how many of those other 5 out of 6 kids just never told anybody?
