As usual, I'm jumpin' in the thread without having kept up.
Anyway, when you run into the non-bootable Matshita CD drive problem, try to
borrow an external SCSI device, whether it's a CD-R, CD-RW, or a simple CD,
as well as a hard drive or Zip.
Hard drive  or a ZIP would be most convenient if you know a fellow Mac user
with an older OS, let's say 8.5 or 8.6.
Do the comm/opt/shft/del combo during bootup and the machine should boot
from the external device.

I like my Matshita drive as is because it's a 24x and plenty of service life
left in it.
And with external devices, I have no problem booting from a maintenance CD
when needed.
This includes CDs that I created myself.

I decided long ago not to fret over the Matshita issue and live with it.
Other then the bootability problem, it has performed all tasks well, which
includes ripping AIFF files from music CDs.
