Pete,

As Howie described, there is space in there for a vertically positioned
drive. There are two mounting screw holes accessible from the front when the
plastic faceplate is removed. The more internal piece of plastic
(~square-ish) I've assumed to be a housing to hold a fan which would blow on
the vertical drive. That piece is indeed difficult to remove (I did it last
week in order to mount a full-sized PCI card) but it will separate from the
piece to which the vertical drive will mount. The locking mechanism is
difficult to describe but it seems to be a three point attachment: two
"clips" at the bottom and an L-shaped tab at the top rear corner (looking in
from the side). The clips can be detached first fairly easily by pushing or
prying upwards at the bottom. Then the fan housing piece remains hinged at
the top rear corner, but with much freedom of movement. Get lots of lighting
in there and perhaps you can see the tab/slot arrangement. It was a bear to
work free. I can email you digital snapshots showing the contact points if
you would like. It really isn't necessary to do this in order to install the
vertical drive, though. The drive, with scsi cable attached at the top, will
simply slide into the space between the fan housing cage and the speaker. (I
apologize for the verbosity.)

I _think_ a drive will also mount beneath the floppy drive bay.

I've never tried this.

I'm not sure of your numbering scheme, but in any case those HDDs are going
to be packed very close together; add a CDRW plus fans and scsi cable(s) and
I think airflow and cooling become a challenge. I wanted a similar
complement of drives (IDE) and decided to transplant the motherboard to an
ATX tower case. I'm in that process now. It's an easy fit except for the
ADB and SCSI ports. Someone recently mentioned removing this piece (EMI
shield?) from the UMAX case and replacing the ATX EMI shield with it. The
ATX piece should pop out easily. Some on the List have done this there are
links on the net (I had some but can't get to them right now).
