Phil, Verify that the controller allows booting; IIRC one of the Adaptec SCSI cards was known to be unable to support booting from a device connected to it, but I don't recall which model that was. Also, it has been observed that some S900s and J700s will resist booting from a device on a PCI card if a blessed System Folder exists on a device connected to one of the buses on the Mobo. As Jeff has already noted, there is little to gain in terms of performance with the devices you mentioned; the internal bus is good up to about 16X for reading or writing CDs, the external up to about 8X.
