One thought I have on the all S900's aren't created equal is that
sometimes they aren't. The most obvious thing we should likely note is
what revision (Rev.) the logic boards in question are (I'm going to guess
it went through several as with any system). Another thing to keep in
mind was Umax Support oddities.
When our last S900 (S900 w/ Newer G3 250MHz) purchased was having
problems crashing etc. and Umax & Decision One had parted ways SuperMac
phone support (down to 2 guys and an answering machine at this point in
1999 I believe...at times I would just keep calling until I got someone
as the machine was a blackhole) they had me ship the machine back to them
for repairs. I was so afraid I wouldn't see it again but a few weeks
later it came back with a "new" logic board. It worked fine and we went
on our merry way. What I didn't realize until almost a year later when
doing some upgrades on the machine and I was suddenly faced with 3 PCI
slots and a 2nd processor slot with no connectors attached, was that they
had, for whatever reason given me a J700 logic board!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!
Luckily they were still hobbling along and again gave me an RMA to return
the machine for the proper logic board and fortunately I got it back
working. It still works great to this day!
Whatever the reason, perhaps lack of parts or carelessness this
might be a problem for others. While the J700 is very similiar it might
have some different compatibilities with things.
Take Care,
Tolga
