If you follow the archives you'll find more than one poster who reverted back to the original CPU and brought back a S900, which then accepted all the upgrades over again. Electronic quirks can be tough to fix, tougher to explain why it happened. Paul C
Forgot to mention in my previous post...
The reason why reverting to an old configuration sometimes works is that you bring the hardware configuration of your machine back into compliance with the settings (device tree) or low level utility programs (NVRAMrc) in the NVRAM. By putting back the old hardware, the contents of the NVRAM are now working with the hardware they were expecting and things proceed.
The reason for the problem in the first place was that the old NVRAM contents were directing the machine to behave as if the old hardware was there, and the hardware was not there and/or different hardware was in its place resulting in unpredictable and usually fatal results.
In theory, the Open Firmware should detect new hardware at boot time, especially, if the CUDA button has been pressed before boot, and modify the NVRAM accordingly. But this does not always work properly, especially if the software (extension or CP) for your old CPU card left a CPU specific program floating around in the NVRAMrc.
