I assume you replaced the original G3 processor with a G4 and then later
put the ATA card in a new slot. When I did this I got a black screen and no
startup chimes. The fix was to put the ATA card back in the original slot,
replace the G4 board with the old G3 board, set the CUDA switch, take out the
G3 board and put the G4 board back. The screen came back to life, chimes
were heard and everything was fine.

When you are getting the black screen, you can almost always fix it by resetting
(or powering up) and hitting the "reset PRAM" combination (cmd-opt-P-R) before
the start-up chime. If you are slow and hit the keys after the start-up chime it does a
different reset which is less thorough.

I believe Jeff meant "original 604e prossessor", not G3?. Working too many hours

The bit about "original G3" was written by Robert Kay, not me. I was quoting his text in my message. I made no CPU specific references.

No, still not working at all--at least not for pay. There do seem to be an increasing number of job postings for chip designers, so I am hopeful. Still, after three years, every time Bush tries to tell me how wonderful every thing is going in the economy, it really sets my teeth on edge.
