That is for email, and doesn't apply.

According to SeaMonkey on description the setup panel in Preferences:

Yep. Looks like the same for years and years.

you have POP3 for incoming Mail,
you have NNTP for incoming News <-- (and outgoing News)

True.

and you have SMTP that handles any traffic going out.

Untrue. Only email.

Are you absolutely sure?

When I do Edit | Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings for this account, there's an option for "Outgoing Server (SMTP):"

And when I click send to post this message, the status bar shows that it's contacting the relevant server.

there is no mention of anything for other than sending messages (makes no distinction of whether for news or email)

however I've found these definitions:

NNTP see: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=mozilla&defl=en&q=define:NNTP&sa=X&ei=UnsXTOK6LcK78ga7jIGZCQ&ved=0CBEQkAE

SMTP see: http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3ASMTP&btnG=Search&hl=en&client=mozilla&sa=2

The very first definition there says: "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
(SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail *(e-mail)*
transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks. .."

POP3 see: http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3APOP3&btnG=Search&hl=en&client=mozilla&sa=2

SMTP is not used for news.

My newsreaders (which are not email clients) have no SMTP settings.

Must be possible, I spose, but it's not how SeaMonkey (or Mozilla before it) is configured out of the box.
