Can't help with the symptoms, Ken, but have you/she considered "Remote
assistance" ?  I use this to assist a number of friends of varying
ages, and it is a Godsend.  If for any reason you cannot use Remote
Assistance, then perhaps consider Skype "Share screen".

I'd warmly recommend www.teamviewer.com, which allows cross-platform
remote assistance. On Windows, the tool doesn't even need an
installation: just download the executable and run it.

No replacement for remotely controlling a computer in order to do the things that the "helpee" can't figure out in the first place.

I've used various verions of VNC in the past to do this. Sitting at my PC controlling a PC 1,000 miles away kills talking to someone on the phone and saying: "Err, okay, now what exactly is the mesage you see on the screen?" Plus, they can see what you're doing and can learn (maybe) from it.
